Yep. My kiddo weighs in at 130 on the money without any kind of cut. Could he have cut to 126 this year? Easily. But he chose to wrestle 132 to be healthy and happy. After 2 pound allowance and the possibility of another 2 pounds, he may weigh in 6 pounds under his competition in a somewhat lower weight class. That’s quite a bit. It’s a choice. I see both arguments but lean towards not having the extra allowance weight. Especially this time of the season when discipline should separate the men from the boys.

Undefeated sounds great but strength of schedule has a huge impact. Facing tough competition week in and week out will take you farther in the state tournament than a pretty record. Even a loss or two from top competition can be great learning opportunities. Everyone knows this. With that said, my sophomore son is currently 17 - 0 (16 pins and a 2nd period tech fall). 25-0 including forfeits. He is unranked. He was a semi state qualifier last year as a freshman. He flys under the radar because our schedule is weaker than most. That’s perfectly ok. I frequently remind him to stay humble and focused as he will face some hammers in the near future. It’s his job to be ready when that time comes.

Small schools have it tough in regards to finding quality practice partners. It's frustrating but what can you do? My kid was a semi-state qualifier as a freshman last year. His primary partner got his butt handed to him in sectionals. That's a discrepancy in talent. This season, 3 potentially "decent" partners he would have had have already quit. What now? All he can do is put his head down and get the best reps in he can during practice. Thankfully he does a considerable amount of off season training with an academy 30 miles away. I hate the plateau he hits during season because of lack of practice partners.
