  1. LN beat MD 27-21 at Indiana's Best in 91. MD returned the favor in 92 by the exact same score. MD vs Ev Central in front of the full house at MD was in '93.
  2. Yes, but 70kg isn't an Olympic weight. Those guys may go 70 kg in '22 and '23, but they will be at 65 kg in '24
  3. Oliver and Retherford will definitely be at 65 kg. They aren't big enough for 74 kg and won't beat Dake and Burroughs to make the team. 65 Kg is their most realistic shot at making the team.
  4. As of 2022, Nick Lee is the best college wrestler that this state has produced. He will certainly have his hands full trying to be the world/olympic team rep going forward. He did beat Yianni the last time they met in freestyle, so he should be confident in their next match up. I think Nick has passed Retherford on the ladder, but still has to deal with Oliver, McKenna and Yianni (and maybe Eierman) to be our rep. Not going to be easy, but now that he can focus solely on freestyle it will be interesting to see how much he progresses.
  5. I know he was born here, but what exactly did he do for Indiana wrestling? Hard for me to fathom that as a youth wrestler that he made some huge contribution to Indiana wrestling. Maybe he considers himself and Indiana guy, but that is pretty unlikely.
  6. Jesse will have to get bigger to have a chance at 141. We just saw a much more seasoned wrestler in Micic try to go up and wrestle 141 and failed to AA. Jesse just lost to a fantastic wrestler who is a bit bigger than him. If the plan is for him to go 141, then he needs to redshirt and grow into the weight.
  7. Everybody says Chad Red shows up in March. What I saw every year was a guy that wrestled not to lose and consequently lost early every year. Seemed like when the pressure was off, he wrestled much better in the consolations. It caught up to him this year and he wasn't able to make a run to the podium. Still a very good career, but it wasn't what anybody in this state thought he would have.
  8. Micic loses 7-3. I think at this point he's more likely to go 0-2 then he is to make a run to the podium on the back side.
  9. And I certainly don't fault the kids for leaving the state. In most cases it is a no brainer. If PSU, tOSU, Iowa or Michigan come calling then IU and Purdue are likely not going to get those kids. So that leaves developing the kids that they get that are a tier or two lower. And specifically at IU I don't think that has happened yet.
  10. Agreed. The state is putting out studs. No question. The problem is that those studs aren't staying home and our D1 schools are paying a price in that they aren't seeing success in terms of AA and NC's.
  11. Oh, they are in much better shape than IU. That's for sure. My point was that we aren't seeing the same success at the D1 level that we are at the lower levels. Purdue might get a couple of guys on the podium, or they might not. I don't see them with any locks for AA.
  12. Oh, he's very good, no doubt about it. Just having some fun with the General.
  13. I'm sure the General will assure all of you FTW guys that Veazy will get you three of them. And he may be right for a change.
  14. As good as the lower divisions are, our two D1 programs continue to struggle, especially IU with only 2 NCAA qualifiers.
  15. No way does Garcia beat Humphrey. 1. Mendez 2. Lee 3. Escobedo 4. Tsirtsis 5. Red
  16. 3 high schools before he completes his Jr year seems a bit strange. At this point he'd be better off just finishing HS on line and heading to Penn RTC next year. He'd get better prep for college there than he would steamrolling through IN HS kids.
  17. At MD in '91 I finished with 27 matches (got beat in regional after breaking my hand in the sectional semis). in '92 I finished with 39 matches, wrestling on Saturday at state. And we wrestled every weekend from the first of December through State. Throw in a mid-week dual in the SIAC and that was plenty of matches. Couldn't imagine wrestling 60 matches in a season. Tough to find that many quality matches, so there may have been some stat padding back when guys were getting 50-60 matches in a year.
  18. Sam Wildeman was upset at SS in 2002, I believe. 1993 Robert Miller. Wasn't varsity in 92. At least he wasn't for the MD/LN dual in 92.
  19. Would definitely be insane, but I give it 0% chance of happening. Just don't see Red running the Seabass/Eierman gauntlet. I don't think he gets by Seabass unless Rivera is injured more than they are letting on.
  20. The one that sticks out to me the most is Lance Ellis' lat drop on Scott Wilson to win his 4th. Quite an exclamation point to his legendary career. Matt Wills' lat drop and then far side cradle on Frank Hammond in the 91 heavyweight final. Seeing a big man move like him was quite impressive. Chad Ruggieri launching every heavyweight in sight
  21. Not going to be a kind NCAA tournament to our Indiana natives. 125 - Hildebrandt did himself no favors with his poor showing at Big 10's. Will be very hard to AA 133 - Hudkins is game, but don't think he gets on the podium 141 - I think Lee should cruise to the finals and is the favorite to repeat (especially if Seabass and Eiermann are dinged up) Red and Micic will struggle to AA at 141 157 - Slivka 0-2 or 1-2 184 - Donnell Washington - hasn't looked good since his injury. Tough one right out of the gate. Don't think he's healthy enough to make a run to the podium on the back side. 197 - Davison and Penola could both win a couple of matches but I don't think either will AA 285 - Parris got the 7 seed, which is good that he's opposite of Gable. But if he doesn't wrestle better than he did at big 10's then he will be 4th at best.
  22. Parris is wrestling with zero confidence against Kerk and Gable. Granted, he could have all the confidence in the world and he isn't beating Gable. But Kerk is a guy that he can beat. It seems to me that Parris doesn't set up his shots vs Kerk. He can't get to his dump so he just dives at the legs. No set ups at all. Kerk is probably a better athlete than Parris and he counters this very easily. The first match he hit that snatch single Mason's left leg 3x I believe. Parris had no answer for it. I wonder if getting destroyed by Gable several times has hurt his confidence against the other top guys. I do want to see him and Cass go at it. He's dominated Cass in the past.
  23. I can agree that small school kids can be overlooked. But I totally disagree that they are mistreated. Curious to hear your rationale on this one.
  24. Depends what the end goal is. Is the goal to develop world/olympic medalists? Because we have been doing just fine with our current system 99% of those wrestling in HS have no chance to go on to the international level. My preference is folkstyle. I wrestled freestyle in my competitive days and I always favored folkstyle. I like watching a guy completely break another wrestler from the top position. I'm not a fan of 30 second tech falls when you have a guy get ankle laced across the mat, which would happen all the time at your typical HS tournament/dual. I'm not sure there are enough quality freestyle coaches out there. Maybe I'm wrong on that.
