  1. My fams from New Castle, I’ve been a part of the program, and known @FCFIGHTER170 since he was a scrawny freshman so my opinion comes with some bias, but I remember saying to my brothers when the season started that Ty would have to go through Hockaday to win this year if he didn’t stay at 126.  I never doubted him.  Not once.  I personally felt if there was anyone from 126-138 that could beat JH, Tylin was it.  I don’t even think Leveall could do it (not to take anything away from KL).

that said, I also said (to my bros) that he’d have to wrestle an absolutely perfect match or hit a big unexpected move to beat JH.  JH is just on a different level than anyone else in Indiana right now and has lofty aspirations.

Tylins a superb athlete, a generational talent, if you will.  IMO, if he focused solely on wrestling, the gap probably wouldn’t have been what it was.  I’m sure I’m not the only one, Mew Castle community or otherwise, that thinks that. He continues to get better and wrestles very smart.  He may not blow guys out of the water but he doesn’t have to.  His best attribute, aside from just being a great person, is his ability to maintain his composure on the mat.  Even in the midst of the semifinal match with JH, he never seemed rattled.  Can’t wait to see what he does next year.

It's the state finals. How about it's just a good bracket and not a bad draw?

It’s a good draw.  I personally think Thrine and Hockaday should be on opposite sides and most states criteria would have them separated.  Not to take anything away from Demarco and Bradley being undefeated, just basing it off of past state championships. The draw could be any of the other scenarios and there’d be heartache somewhere, ifs & buts…..  I’m also admittedly a little biased towards Thrine

    Some say if you ain’t first you’re last, what’s it matter if you’re 2nd or 3rd, etc…but

    1.  The atmosphere of the finals brings about a totally different mentality and feel.  Not to mention, the opportunity still exists

    2. That’s why they wrestle the matches

Agreed. Thrine seemed undersized when wrestling Davis. If Davis does not cut him with 40 seconds, what would overtime have looked like? The size and strenght of Davis slowed Thrine down. Will not be a close match between Thrine and Hockaday....that is, if Thrine makes it to see him. Good wrestler and will continue to grown and improve but is not going to defeat Hockaday.

Something to consider, Davis had stall warning already and Thrine put himself in a lot of positions to get the call.  I felt, given the stall warning in place, Davis gave himself a better shot at winning in regulation by letting Thrine up than risking a penalty point.

Davis drops to the ankle and thrine gets in a position that forces Davis to stay on the ankle, the penalty point comes out and now he has to turn thrine to win or let him up and take him down just to get to OT. Jmo

  4. Or….

wrestlebacks at SS after quarterfinals to determine 5/6.  Wrestle 3rd and 5th place matches at same time.

during finals, instead of 3rd place match, wrestle true 4th matches only where necessary.  If 4th place defeated 5th place in quarterfinals no match would be required and scored as a walkover.  A true alternate is identified and nothing has to change at the state meet

this adds 3-4 matches matches (per weight).

  5. Regarding NC 138 finals

disclaimers:  I intend to focus only on the actions on the mat and seen on camera.  I intend to remain as impartial as possible and acknowledge that I have a bias towards NC having coached within the program and my family is from NC.

having worn the stripes in the past, what I saw was extremely disrespectful to the sport, the opponent, the offending athletes coaches and the offending athletes own dignity and integrity along with the state as a whole.  That said, time to move on and grow from this.

personally, and after refreshing myself on the rules, having worn the stripes in the past, I’d have assessed the situation as follows

    1. Pinfall

    2. USLC during match against wC contestant, deduct 1 team point

    3. USLC during match against NC contestant, deduct 1 tm point.

Regardless of opinion, retaliation should be penalized.  NC having to be restrained by refs warrants USLC

    4. USLC during match against WC Contestant after second gesture. Deduct 1 team point.

    5. Coach misconduct during match against WC. Deduct 1 team point. I call this because of the coaches failure to control the contestant, as ultimately the coaching staff and administration is responsible for the team/athletes conduct.

despite the actions being what they were, I can’t see where Flagrant Misconduct should be called.

fan misconduct does not affect teams or athletes, but can result in fans being removed from the premises.

Now, it’s been a while since I was a ref so I could be wrong.  I’m basing this on how I saw it and the current NFHS penalty chart. Regardless, I still can’t see where anyone should be removed from the state meet.

Leavell should have definitely been hit at least twice for unsportsmanlike conduct! His coaches should’ve corrected him immediately as well. There’s absolutely no place in this sport for standing over your opponent after pinning him & making gestures & talking trash! None! Then to walk away laughing & making a gesture as to say, “I spanked you” is unacceptable!

I thought so too, but I’m a little biased in this case.

Scenes at New Castle after Leavell pins Whitehead

Leavell made a gesture after the pin and was hit with unsportsmanlike; whitehead took exception.  Leavell made another gesture.   Whitehead was hit with unsportsmanlike as well.  Unsure if leavell got a second or not.

The idea that “ it’s always been this way why change it now” is an odd way to look at it to me. I get the excitement about the “worst ticket round matches”. But this isn’t about spectator excitement. this is about the best 16 kids making it. Until there is a change you’ll never have the top 16 of each weight on the state floor. I can appreciate you love for the randomness and exciting semi state matches. But just because it has been this way doesn’t mean it shouldn’t ever change.

IHSAA and lack of wrestle backs are proof that it can be stupid and “work” and still be stupid.

The 4 wrestlers who would beat the other 12 wrestlers in the bracket, if given a chance. Or have already beaten them.

That's subjective.  By that definition, you wouldn't need sectional, regional, or SS.  Just a ranking system.  But the individual rankings are done by individuals.  There's not really a statistical analysis conducted that can define who the best 4 are.  There's a reason they wrestle the matches.

The only right answer is wrestlebacks.  The pod system works at all levels.  Wrestlebacks promote the team aspect as well as get the closest thing to the "Top 8" possible.

There's always gonna be multiple someones ranked in the top 16 that don't qualify for one reason or another.  SS only takes top 4, so & so had a bad/good day, etc.  Even with wrestlebacks, there will always be a complaint from someone, somewhere.

But that's why they wrestle the matches.

  10. Seeding is unnecessary at regional.  I can see the need for it at Semi-State & state but would limit seeding to region/SS champions while keeping the formula for the draw.

I'd like to see wrestlebacks at regional & SS & state, would even concede to just SS with wrestleback 3rd after quarters (first round loss = elimination).  Would get a better representation of the top 16

and I'll never understand why state itself is not full wrestlebacks.  Are we really okay with a kid winning 1 match and being a state placer?  Make em earn it.
