  1. 2-3 lbs tops... IF that comes off by a healthy diet. Making your child eat a salad and some fruit for dinner a couple nights is NOT child abuse. That being said, it's pointless to cut weight if your kid feels like crap. My kids have gone both directions and usually wrestle better if they feel good, rather than sacrificing good nutrition for the sake of being stronger against smaller kids. That strength goes away after the first period if they don't have stored energy.
  2. My pick on best to never win: Vinny Corsaro. Takedown machine.
  3. You emphasize my point when you say "minus folkstyle nationals." I don't want to give up great competition and experience because the ISWA wants to push this. I've said before that I'd buy in for 1 qualifying tournament, but 2 is too many. And the fact is that my kids will also probably get qualified, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with this decision. And please be assured that after 18 years and 3 kids, I have a pretty good handle on what I signed up for.
  4. So many hypotheticals have been brought up, but here is my actual Spring schedule with the 2 qualifying tournament rule. March 6-8 Kids Folkstyle State March 14 Big kids Folkstyle State March 15-22 Spring Break Vacation in FL (much needed after high school season) March 28 FREE DAY!!! April 3-5 USAW Folkstyle Nat'ls April 10-12 Kingsport Duals (Heartland Duals is the same weekend) April 18 Center Grove April 25 Franklin May 1-3 Freestyle State I have 2 kids that wrestle right now so I guess I should only have one. I guess I shouldn't take a vacation either. I am a youth coach. How do I tell my wrestling parents that they should travel and get some out of state exposure and wrestle freestyle? I am forced to choose traveling or freestyle. Guess which one I'm leaning on eliminating from my schedule. And I live an hour from Indy. It's not the drive time.... it's having a life.
  5. This was a cool topic last year. I'm not so much a fan of it this year.
  6. Kemper is tough and is probably the favorite, but I've seen him and Dunn wrestle Koontz and both had Koontz down until the third period. I'm an Edgewood guy so I'm hoping our guy will get through Dunn, but if not, Dunn vs Kemper will be a great matchup. Kemper is so hard to score on and Dunn reminds me of Kemper's old teammate (B. Kelly) with his ability to scramble.
  7. Here's my tangent on the freakin spladle. I hate the recent explosion of this thing. My 11 yr old has fallen in love with the spladle and decided that it's better than traditional defense. The problem is he gets it every once in a while but it usually causes him more harm than good. And the spladle is cool to watch. I'll throw in that I also hate the now go to ankle dive and roll that I'm seeing more often. Same issue that it gets you into trouble more often than gets you out of it. Here's my question as it pertains to this post: If wrestler A is dominating, why go for a risky move like a spladle anyway? Not smart to make yourself vulnerable if you don't need to. It's one thing to stay in attack mode, but that doesn't mean you need to get cute. Just my 2 cents.
  8. My take (not that it matters much): Under the old format, a wrestler qualified for freestyle state by placing in the top three or four at a local tournament. Seems silly if the point of wrestling freestyle is to get better, but it was a task that could be accomplished by wrestling one weekend. Why the push for 2 tournaments? I'm like Y2 with the travel tournaments in the spring. How do you tell a high level wrestler to forego national level events so he can go wrestle local tournaments. I'd buy in if it were one, but 2??!! Seems like shooting yourself in the foot as far as improving the level of wrestling in the state. Someone mentioned CJ. How many local events does he wrestle other than freestyle state? I Know he does flonationals and scholastic duals. How does he give that up to make sure he gets 2 local tournaments in? All this does it make it harder for kids to get better competition in the spring. I honestly believe there will be a drop in numbers at freestyle state which in turn lowers numbers at Fargo. This is devastating to my household. My oldest wants to do Flo or Iowa, and my middle son wants to go to Kingsport. This makes life very difficult when I have to work weekends. 2 is too many in today's world! I truly feel for the guys in the north. They are getting hosed!
  9. I can tell you that my oldest son used to be an in season wrestler only. He found success as a youth and middle school wrestler because of his athleticism but quickly realized his freshman year that it takes more than in season work to be successful. He nearly quit after his freshman year but decided that he'd do a little more in the spring and got a little better. His sophomore year, he began to get quite a bit better, but suffered a loss at semi state in a match he was winning with 17 seconds left. It was at that moment he decided to dedicate his offseason time to wrestling. He continued to play football because he loved the sport but replaced football camps with wrestling camps and competed in offseason tournaments. He made wrestling his focus and played football for fun. His Junior year was a turning point and he upset some guys to get 3rd at state. He made it his mission this past offseason to win a state title, but played football in the fall. It was really a nice mental break during the fall and he had a lot of fun with his friends. The moral of the story is an athlete can compete in other sports, but if he/she wants to compete at the state level, he/she is going to have to put in some serious wrestling-focused work in the offseason. To respond to your question: it's probably unlikely to expect to make it out of semi state as an in-season wrestler. The upper weights can be exceptions with a big, athletic kid, but generally speaking, semistate qualifier.
  10. Okay, that's my bad. I thought I used to have Edgewood but apparently I failed to edit that info on my profile. I'll change it. I apologize for the confusion. While we are talking about profiles, is there a way to change my user name to something cool... Like TripleB?
  11. My bad. Got to wandering in here then forgot where I was.
  12. And another thing. If I'm the parents of the wrestler that gets bumped after paying my money and watching my kid do a face off thinking he's going to wrestle and then he gets bumped at the last second, I'm NOT happy.
  13. Okay, so I'm wondering what other coaches, fans, wrestlers, etc. think of this cause I'm a little frustrated. We have now had 2 dual meets in which the team we are wrestling dodges one of our wrestlers and actually removes kids from the lineup to avoid wrestling our 160 lber. I literally watched a coach hold his 160 lber back and wait to see who we sent to the score table, then gave us the forfeit, then bumped his 60 to 70 and bumped their 70 from the lineup. I should preface this by saying that the team we were wrestling has beaten us soundly twice before this so it wasn't like there was a real strategy where saving one point would mean the difference. The frustrating part is it is senior night and we've got family, friends, and many of the students there to celebrate a pretty successful wrestler that has meant a lot to our program. To me, it looked like a sissy move. I understand strategy and best case scenario is that he saves a couple points, but again, they have dominated us in the last 2 duals. What happened to you lineup your team against my team and we will go at it? Frustrated on senior night.
  14. Thought this was pretty cool. Gabe is the face that shows before you start the video. He's also shown a couple times throughout if you look close. This was aired for the first time during last night's Northwestern v. Minnesota dual meet. http://vimeo.com/114987403
  15. Wow! Can there be a more stacked preseason high school tournament than this year's IHPO?!! Some of the best in the Midwest this year! I want to thank the Indianamat crew for having this tournament on Sunday so football players can participate. It's frustrating trying to get some mat time with Friday weigh ins and Saturday wrestling. There are quite a few guys that want to compete in the fall and love to play football. I hope other tournament directors take note. Kudos and thank you.
  16. Just wondering if there was gonna be a live feed for this. Not seeing one on Flo but I was hoping I'm missing it somewhere.
  17. You might do some research on club wrestling. I've noticed that a lot of colleges have club wrestling and compete against other colleges that have club wrestling. I've noticed this in a lot of schools that don't offer wrestling as a varsity sport. Just an idea. If that isn't an option, find a local high school team that wouldn't mind you helping out with the team. It's an opportunity to help other kids improve and stay somewhat fresh and in shape. Good luck!
  18. I can't find it. Is it on there yet or does Triple B just have the inside scoop?
  19. My kids have been wrestling in ISWA State Tournaments for the last 10 years. I must say that this year's Kids' Folkstyle State Tournament was the best run tournament I have ever seen in Indiana. The staff and volunteers with the ISWA were amazing! I wanted to take this opportunity to simply say Thank You to all involved.
