SWINfan
I know this isn't shocking news, but man that's a lot of spots for the Big Ten!

It is the most the Big 10 has ever had. The next closest was 86 in 2015. They did this without Chad Red or Stevan Micic earning an allocation, either. Wild. maligned
Yeah, crazy at 141...Red, Micic plus Duncan from Illinois don't get allocations because of too few matches. Only 7 auto bids with 10 guys ranked in the Top 33 by the coaches and Intermat. There will be 5 wildcards available, of course, for the 3 that don't take the auto bids. Still, with no RPI to fall back on, if Micic doesn't get a good win or two, he could be in peril outside the Top 7 at Big 10s.

There were 33 wrestlers qualified for 29 spots (Red was one of the 33). To decide who to eliminate they increment all three qualifying standards at the same time (win % goes to 71, RPI to 29, and CR to 29) as many times as they need to, to knock guys out. Red and one other wrestler got knocked out together in the last increment, taking the total allocations down to 28 instead of 29.

I understand your point, but the fact remains that he, Micic, and Duncan are all the caliber of wrestlers that would easily have earned allocation spots if they'd wrestled enough matches to be given an RPI. Officially, Red falls out of the running on win%, but some guys beating him out are way lower in the coaches' ranking than him. They just had an RPI metric available to keep them in 2 of the 3 categories when the sliding scale started moving.

We all know that the conferences are not created equal. The committee likely should have ran an extra calculation based on their conference allocations before deciding what “fat to cut. But in the end Red shouldn’t have an issue getting in if he continues to wrestle as he has been. Edited February 27, 2022 by MattM
wrestlenewbie
Red gets Rooks in the first round. Then the winner of Santos (MSU) v. Bergeland (Minn) in the quarters. Lee awaits in the semis. I don't see Red losing to any of Rooks, Santos or Bergeland.
