Im guessing maligned's formulas aren't open to suggestion

I am just trying to get a better understanding thats all.  I like what he has done and I think it will work and give a very good account of the best teams. Like with anything new, questions will be asked for clarification.

So does this mean that if a 1A team does great in this state tourney, but has a bad year next year, they are invited to ISHWCA next year?

Very likely....especially if there greatness in this state tourney is led by lots of underclassmen

We probably had an anomoly a few years back when one 1 a team had 3 high state placers and a losing team record.  Indian Creek I believe.  Is there anyway that you could do a simple check of the teams that are near the top and make sure they have a nice winning percentage within thier division from the previous year.

Even with the 3 high placers, Indian Creek's points would not have been enough to qualify for the event because their undergrad points would not have been good enough.  In 1A especially, also, the lower places are much higher points than in other classes, so having 3 or 4 great wrestlers (even underclassmen) won't get it done if you have numerous forfeits like they did that year.  The point system won't have strange teams due to this situation.  The only way a team can get high points and then have a bad duals team the next year is if all their kids don't come back out.

7 of the 8 invitations will be given after this season's state finals are finished because there's so much to plan logistically for the athletic departments of the schools; so if a team has a high volume of strong underclassmen that don't come back out for wrestling, this is the one situation where it is feasible to have an undeserving team at the event.

Had there been an event this year, there was one team of the 24 that would have been invited that had a fall-off compared to what their undergrad performance suggested they'd be this year--and it was because star kids didn't come back out for wrestling.  But all the top teams in their class would still be there--no potential state champion team would not have been invited.

That was mainly my logic for always saying realign the sectionals somewhat evenly between each class (3 in this case) and take the highest point total for each into separate class team tournaments. Thus you may have finished 3rd overall but you were the top 1A team so you are the 1A representative.  It puts a value on the whole team scoring points where everyone at least represents the team.  Obviously the IHSAA isnt going to let us try something like that now.  At the state tournament level so many different schools are involved with only a partial team it makes it easier for a small squad of really good kids to score in top 5 where they may not even won there sectional.
