Drooke, np.

Gomez to the finals!  Takes out the Kazakh with a takedown with less than 5 seconds to go in the third!  He'll have the Russian world champ that came through Reece's side of the bracket.

Whatever the case, it definitely shows that Reece is on the level to do very, very well.  He's typically been a better freestyler than Gomez.  Here's hoping he can have a run like Gomez next year when Olympic glory is up for grabs.

Cael beats a Korean.  Still needs wins over a Kazakh, an Iranian, and a Russian for bronze.  They're all very, very tough.  This side of the draw was insane.

Varner needs to beat a Tajik and a Kazakh for bronze.  I think Varner was better than the Turk that beat him and these two, so it seems doable.

Cael loses ends up fourth.

Just for clarification it's actually considered tied for 5th because of how the international brackets work with having two 3rds.  But the good news is he and Varner did qualify the US for their weights for the Olympics.

Thanks for all the updates!

I watched Hump match and hated the fact it went to the ball grab, could of gone either way! Still had some good matches and wins. Only  /.omu0

ba ck from this stronger!

Bigger surprise for me was that Cael lost twice in the same day... has that ever happened before?

Hope to see him in in the olympics next yr, cant imagine him going out any other way then with GOLD!

Going into the final 3 of the 7 freestyle weight classes, we're tied for 3rd in points.

Summary:

4 weight classes, 1 bronze, 2 fifths

Again, fifth is good because we automatically qualify that weight for the Olympics.  Reece can still bring his weight into play later at other tournaments.

Finally, it wasn't mentioned by others, but Michigan St. grad and Reece's ex-college nemesis Franklin Gomez (Puerto Rico) ended up losing the final to the Russian.  I watched the match on ESPN3, and the Russian is incredible--ultra quick, strong, composed, balanced, never in true danger.  Now 3-time defending world champ.  He moved up to Reece's weight at 132 after getting bronze at the Olympics behind Henry Cejudo.  It's hard to believe from looking at him that he'd ever wrestle anything below about 150--let alone 121 at the Olympics a few years ago.  Reece or Gomez will have to bring something special to take gold from him next year.  Can't wait to see Reece keep getting better.

Ware, Burroughs, and Dlagnev today.

All three got absolutely awful draws, with wrestling superpowers on all sides of them.

Ware already lost first round to a Ukrainian.  The Ukrainian will have to win 4 matches for Ware to come back into medal contention.  It seems like he'll be favored to get to the semi's, then potentially face this bracket's Russian.

Dlagnev up shortly.  Burroughs got a bye and will wrestle a Ukrainian in the second round.  Russian in the round of 16 if he wins.  Horrible draw.

Dlagnev takes out Olympic bronze medalist from Kazakhstan, 0-1, 1-0, 1-0.  He's got 2-time olympic gold medalist from Uzbekistan next in the quarters.  The Uzbek also won the silver last year at worlds.  Did I mention it before that these draws today are ridiculous?

Ukrainian upset world champ from India, so Ware is still alive.  But if the Ukrainian goes through, Ware's first match in the repechage will be the world champ.  Killer.

Burroughs has Venezuela in the quarters.  If he makes the semi's, he'll have last year's 5th place Cuban or Azerbaijani who beat out his country's world silver medalist.  JB has to be considered the favorite the rest of the way after taking out the world champ.

The Ukrainian who beat Ware is out, so Ware is done.

On the positive side, the guy who beat the Ukrainian to advance to the semi's is Cuban, so that means a better chance to qualify this weight for the Olympics at the Pan Am games.

Burroughs vs the Azerbaijani in a few minutes.  Dlagnev now wrestling the Uzbek.

United States is rising!

Tervel Dlagnev shocks the 2-time Olympic champ from Uzbekistan!  He just got HAMMERED by him last month.  Loses the ball draw in the third and gets away to win!

Into the semi's.  Qualifies the weight for the Olympics, which means we've now qualified 5 of the 7 weights for freestyle.  Amazing job so far by the U.S.  And a realistic chance at gold for both Dlagnev and Burroughs.

Burroughs will wrestle for gold!!

0-2, 5-4, 3-0

Crazy, crazy match that finishes with the Azerbaijani slapping Burroughs with under 10 seconds and busting his ear so that there's blood all over the whole mat. Wild.

Reminder: Finals on ESPN3 at 12:30pm.

Dlagnev loses in an awful match.  The Belarussian opponent blocks the whole match while Dlagnev attacks and shoots and attacks and shoots.  Dlagnev loses both ball draws and loses the match 1-0, 1-0.

He'll wrestle for bronze against an opponent TBD.

Team points update going into final session: Russia 43, Iran 40, U.S. 37.  If we win our two matches and Iran loses theirs, we tie them for 2nd.  We're head-to-head in Burroughs' match, so really only 3 matches have to go our way for that too happen.  Whatever the case, a HUGE improvement from last year's performance in freestyle.

We're golden!  Burroughs wins the gold over the 2-time world medalist Iranian, 3-2, 4-1.

He's so quick with such reach that his bread and butter in freestyle has become a low single to a lift to a drive out of bounds.  He can do it almost at will.  Fun to watch and be on his side instead of cheering against him when Howe is wrestling.

By the way, because of the new qualification rules that reward winning international tournaments, people on the USA wrestling site are saying that Howe will not only have to win the US trials tournament and beat Burroughs 2 of 3, but will also have to place higher than him at an international tournament.  I don't know all the exact procedures, but Howe has an uphill battle no matter how you look at it because of how amazing Burroughs has become.

Dlagnev loses to a Georgian on a ball draw in the third, 1-0, 0-1, 1-0.  He finishes fifth.

So, a final summary of our performance in men's freestyle:

1 gold

1 bronze

3 fifths

(2 weights still need to qualify for Olympics)

3rd place as a team behind Russia and Iran

Greco summary:

1 fifth

(6 weights need to qualify for Olympics at other tournaments)

Women's summary:

2 bronze

2 fifths

(not sure about Olympic qualification, because I don't know if Olympics now use all the women's weights)

It's basically the same long qualification process Humphrey's had to do to get to Worlds because of Bunch winning a major international event.  The idea being that if you can prove yourself at a major world level event that your opponent needs to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt he's capable of that same by not only beating you at the Team Trails, but also placing over you at a major international event too.

By the way thanks for the multiple updates maligned.  Great job all week on keeping us busy people informed.
