maligned
ESPN3 has the matches live now. Gray wins bronze with a very solid performance over a Turk. That's our first medal after 12 misses...woo hoo! Hopefully 2 more coming this afternoon.
maligned
Bernard gets another bronze for the U.S. She gave up an early takedown to the Kazakh, but reversed to a pin. Two for two today. Simmons to come in probably less than a half hour.
maligned
Simmons was controlled for the most part and lost 1-0, 4-0 to the Iranian. Each style has 7 weight classes. A fifth place finish or better clinches an Olympic position for the U.S. for that weight class. Other positions have to be won through other international tournaments. Summary so far: Greco: no medals, one fifth (complete) Women: 2 bronze, 2 fifths (complete) Freestyle: one fifth (1 weight complete) Reece and Sanderson tomorrow. Big day. maligned
Franklin Gomez from Michigan St., NCAA champ over Hump in '09, is wrestling today at 60kg for Puerto Rico. I didn't realize until just now. Cruised in the first round over a Georgian, which is a pretty big deal. Hump and Varner have byes first round. Sanderson up shortly. maligned
Dolly wins first round 3-1, 6-0.
maligned
Cael wins 6-0, 7-0 over a Mexican. As I said, Varner has a bye, so it'll be a few minutes before the second round and Hump has his first match vs. a Mexican as well.

maligned
Gomez to the round of 16 with a 1-0, 3-0 win over N Korea.
maligned
Dang. Sanderson got worked 3-1, 4-1. Came out and got an ankle pick to a double in 8 seconds, then got worked the rest of the match. The Azerbaijani has medalled in the Euro finals a couple times. All the Azerbaijanis are total studs, but I didn't expect Cael to get hammered so badly. His opponent will have to beat the world champ Bulgarian to get Cael back into bronze contention.
maligned
Dolly wins second round 3-0, 6-0 over Macedonia. Front headlock clinic. Now he'll face some competition. Japan in the Round of 16. Russia in the quarters if he wins.
maligned
Varner wins 3-0, 5-0. Joins Reece in the round of 16.
maligned
Reece crushin' it. 6-0 first period. Pin in the second over a Tunisian. The Armenian got upset, so he's got a French guy in the quarters. If he wins, he'll have the winner of the 2-time defending world champ Russian and the 2-time defending silver medalist Ukrainian. He'll have to beat one of those 2 in the semi's or the bronze medal match to get a medal. Anyway, France first.
maligned
Reece loses to the French guy. Got inside tripped to his back in the first and lost 4-1. Survived a crazy second 3-3. Went to the horrible, horrible ball draw in the 3rd and the Frenchman won the draw and took him down. He's out unless the French guy upsets the Russian world champ. Gomez is into the quarters for Puerto Rico (opposite side of the draw from Reece). Won't wrestle his quarters match for a little bit yet.
maligned
Dolly also lost, but wow. He almost shocked a Japanese guy. He was up 3-0 in the third period, goes down 4-3, and comes within an eyelash of 2 different push-out attempts in the last 10 seconds.
maligned
Varner into the quarters. 7-1, 6-0 over China.
maligned
Gomez of MSU/Puerto Rico shocks an Azerbaijani 2-1 in the third period to advance to the semi's. This qualifies P.R for the Olympics, which is good for the U.S. in terms of Olympic qualifying also. Since Reece won't finish in the top 5, the U.S. has to qualify another way next season. One of those ways is the Pan Am games, and Gomez now won't be there to potentially take a U.S. spot.
maligned
Another note is that the Azerbaijani guy that beat Sanderson made it out of their killer quarter because the world champ got upset early on. He still has to beat the Russian in the semi's, but there's much more of a chance for Cael to get back into medal contention now.
maligned
Varner loses to the host Turkey in the quarters, 1-0, 1-0. He dominated the first period with a couple very near takedowns. He also won the ball draw, but couldn't finish the takedown. Turkey then got the takedown in the second. Now rooting for Turkey in the semi's. The Frenchman who beat Reece lost as expected, which means Hump is officially done. Too bad. Come back stronger next year.
