Not been a great two days thus far for the US.  At least not on the Greco side of things.

The one slight positive as been Lester as 4-2 and placed 5th.  This does qualify the US at that weight class for the Olympics.  The top 5 qualify there country at that specific weight and everyone else has to keep trying at another qualifying event.

Mango 0-1 (27th)

Ruiz 1-2 (20th)

Betterman 0-1  (35th)

Haight 0-1 (26th)

Byers 0-1 (24th)

These placement were decided by how the opponent that beat you finished the event.  For those unaware the only way to reach the wrestleback/repechage portion (for 3rd place) in international competition is if someone who beat you made the finals of the competition.

Hopefully, we will finish a little stronger as the week progresses.

MM, its actually the Top 6 finishers, at least according to ''Themat''

''This event is a major qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympic Games. The top six placewinners in each of the 18 Olympic weight classes will qualify their nation to compete at the Olympic Games in that weight class.''

I hope so too!

seen that we didnt do 2 well in Mens Greco...

I think we will have a strong showing in Mens freestyle, I am super excited for Reece!

I am anxious to see how Cael does, 1st true test since his comeback. Also Burroughs has been tearing up freestyle, it will be nice to see how he does against this level of world class competition

There are two 3rd/5th place matches.  So you have to place 5th, but there are 6 total wrestlers that will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd (2) or 5th (2).

You're both right.

The hits keep coming.  Fisher and Conder both lost second round in the greco and women's competitions, respectively.  Both are out of medal contention as well.

Chun lost in the quarters at 48kg for the women and is waiting to see if the girl that beat her will win in the semi's and push her into the bronze medal semi-finals.

I did not know that, thanks for clearing that up

Yeah sorry may have been able to say it differently but international wrestling is a strange medal system to explain.  It set up in a way so they do not have to have full wrestlebacks.  Plus they feel have two bronze medal allows more recognition for the countries.  Not to mention its their way of saying sorry for removing weight classes form competition over the years.

Chun lost in the repechage semi-finals.  That's 0 for 9 in medals after 3 days of competition (0 for 7 in greco, and 0 for 2 in the women's fs).  More of the same theme from the last number of  years in international competition.  It only seems to be getting worse.

Some better results so far today from the ladies.

Maroulis is 2-1 at 55kg and waiting to see if the Japanese Olympic champion she lost to wins in the semi's.

Pirozhkova at 63kg is in the semi's, so she definitely has two chances to try and medal (and of course is still in contention for gold).  She has the other Olympic gold medalist from Japan next.

Campbell at 59kg went 0-1 and is eliminated.

Maroulis did in fact enter the repechage rounds.  She won her first match and needs 2 more wins to medal.

Pirozhkova lost in the semi's to the Japanese girl who beat her out for the gold last year.  She's in the bronze medal match.

Maroulis and Pirozhkova both going for bronze.  I'm assuming they'll show both matches on ESPN3 at 7pm when the nightly broadcast comes on.

Pirozhkova got silver last year, but I think this is the first world championship appearance for Maroulis.

Yikes.  They both lost.  We're 0 for 12.  Two more women, plus 55kg of the men's freestyle tomorrow.  Let's hope we can get it going a little bit.

We've definitely got a few guys that could medal in freestyle (including Reece).  How awesome is it to have Sanderson back, by the way?  Is he all the way back?  Can't wait to find out.

Obviously, there are no easy paths at Worlds, but Nick Simmons seems to have gotten a very favorable draw for tomorrow.  No one who finished Top 10 at worlds last year till the quarters.  Only a 5th place finisher from last year's worlds potentially before the semi's.  World Champion on the other side of the bracket entirely.  Anyway, we'll see if he can make something of his opportunity.

Simmons wins R1 over a German  (1-0, 0-1, 2-0).  Wrestles a guy from Moldova in the Round of 32.

With smaller brackets for the women's upper weights, Gray into round of 16 at 67kg without wrestling and Bernard into round of 16 with a first-round victory.

Simmons wins 2 more at 55kg and is now in the quarterfinals against a Japanese guy who may be the favorite of the 4 left on his side of the bracket.  The Russian defending champ is on the other side of the bracket.

For the women, Bernard upset last year's silver medalist from Canada in the quarters at 72kg and is probably a slight favorite to advance to the final.  The gold medalist from Russia is in the other semi-final.  Gray lost in the round of 16 at 67kg, but the Chinese girl who beat her looks favored to win in the semi's and put Gray into the repechage round where she would need 2 victories to medal.

Simmons beats the Japanese!  He's into the semi's against a Bulgarian who finished 7th last year.  Amazing opportunity to wrestle for gold if he can seize it.  Whatever the case, he definitely has 2 chances to win a match and get on the medal stand.

Bernard gets beat in the semi's and will wrestle in the bronze medal match.

Gray is back alive in the repechage semi's.

He lost 0-1, 0-1 to the Bulgarian.  Bummer.  He'll be going for bronze on the ESPN3 broadcast at 12:30pm--very likely against last year's bronze medalist, an Iranian.

Gray with a huge win over last year's gold medal-winning Canadian.  She and Bernard will also wrestle for bronze at 12:30pm on ESPN3.

Come on!  One of these 3 has to give us a breakthrough in the medals.
