Al Smith Day 1 Recap and Semi-Finals Preview

The Al Smith Invitational started off with as much hype as ever this year.  The main reason for the hype was the 130lb weight class that featured 3X state champion Josh Harper, state champion Cashe Quiroga, state runner-up Frankie Porras and state 4th place finisher Will Sheets.  As usual with a tournament of this caliber there were upsets and surprises throughout the day.  One of the biggest upsets occurred at the 152lbs weight class where 8th seed Anthony Quiroz of Chesterton beat #1 seed Tyler Baker of Bellmont 3-1 in overtime.  Quiroz is only a freshman and will be one to watch the rest of the year and the next four years.  Here is a weight by weight recap and preview of the semi-finals.

      103:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 Stevens(Merrillville) vs. #4 Moore(Elkhart Memorial)
      #2 Ayersman(Lake Central) vs. #3 Brooks(Warsaw)

There were no big upsets at 103lbs as the top four seeds all advanced to the semi-finals.  Zac Stevens, the #4 ranked wrestler in the state will take on unranked Michael Moore in the semi-finals, while the other semi-final will pit the #5 and #14 ranked wrestlers against eachother when Kyel Ayersman battles Jared Brooks.

      112:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 Brandon Nelson(Lawrence North) vs. #4 Alex Griesemer(Princeton)
      #2 Paul Beck(Mishawaka) vs. #3 Travis Barroquillo(Prairie Heights)

Just like the 103lbs weight class there were no major upsets in the championship round.  There was a minor upset as Alex Griesemer of Princeton came from behind to beat #14 Alex Gregory in the quarterfinals.  Gregory was in the lead until Griesemer pulled out a headlock pin late in the third period.  Brandon Nelson, the #2 ranked wrestler in the state, will take on Griesemer in the top half of the bracket.  The other semi-final match will be a great one when #5 Paul Beck takes on #12 Travis Barroquillo.

      119:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 Matt Milton(Center Grove) vs. #4 Cory Hildebrandt(Penn)
      #2 Matt Guerra(Mishawaka) vs. #3 Jake Lamb(Lowell)

For the third straight weight class all the top seeds advanced to the semi-finals.  The 9th, 10th and 11th ranked wrestlers will battle it out for the Al Smith title tomorrow.  #9 Matt Milton will take on unranked, but dangerous Cory Hildebrandt, while #10 Jake Lamb will face off with #11 Matt Guerra.

      125:
      #1 Justin Brooks(Warsaw) vs. #4 Zack Thornton(Chesterton)
      #2 Anthony Napules(Merrillville) vs. #3 Aaron Garrettson(Peru)

While this weight class advanced the top four seeds, there still was an upset at #8 Matt Adams of Center Grove lost in the quarter-finals to #12 Zack Thornton of Chesterton.  The semi-finals at this weight will feature four ranked wrestlers.  #3 at 119lbs Justin Brooks will take on Thornton, while the other semi-final matchup will feature #4 Anthony Napules of Merriville going up against #7 Aaron Garrettson of Peru.

      130:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 Josh Harper(Mishawaka) vs. #5 Will Sheets(Bellmont)
      #2 Cashe Quiroga(Lawrence North) vs. #3 Frankie Porras(Hobart)

This by far is the featured weight class of the tournament.  All four of these wrestlers have finished in the top four in the state, with two of them coming away with titles last year.  Add to that two other wrestlers ranked in the top 16 in the state and this is a weight class that is equal to the state finals.  Will Sheets came away with the only upset as he avenged an earlier loss to Jimmy LaRowe of East Noble to advance to the semi-finals.  #1 Josh Harper will take on #5 at 125lbs Will Sheets in the top half of the bracket while, #1 at 125lbs Cashe Quiroga will wrestle #2 Frankie Porras in the other semi-final.

      135:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 Taylor March(East Noble) vs. #5 Ben Sokol(Penn)
      #2 Johnny Dillon(Hobart) vs. #3 Paul Manbu-Thompson(Warsaw)

Only one upset in the bracket at 135lbs, when Ben Sokol scored a late takedown to beat #4 seed Jeremy Hill of Jimtown.  The 2nd and 3rd ranked wrestlers in the state could meet in the finals if they win their semi-final matches.  #2 Taylor March will take on unranked Ben Sokol, while #3 Johnny Dillon will take on unranked Paul Manbu-Thompson.

      140:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 Steven Sandefer(Mishawaka) vs. #4 Trace Hall(South Bend Riley)
      #2 Jarrod Crump(Center Grove) vs. #3 Ryan Stahl(Elkhart Memorial)

No upsets in this weight, but there are some great semi-final matches that includes all four wrestlers ranked in the top 11 of the weight class.  #1 and defending state champion Steven Sandefer will take on #8 Trace Hall, while the other semi-final will feature #7 Ryan Stahl wrestling #11 Jarrod Crump.

      145:
      Semi-Finals:
#1 Zach Corpe(Elkhart Memorial) vs. #5 Tyler Lymburner(South Bend Riley)
      #3 Matt Goodwin(Lawrence North) vs. #7 Spencer Stockwell(Chesterton)

This weight had quite a few upsets as #15 Dalton Sparks fell in the quarter-finals to Spencer Stockwell.  Zach Corpe is the only ranked wrestler still alive for the championship.  #12 Zach Corpe will face Tyler Lymburner in the top half, while Matt Goodwin will face off with upset minded Spencer Stockwell.

      152:
      Semi-Finals:
      #5 Drake Stein(Princeton) vs. #8 Anthony Quiroz(Chesterton)
      #3 Jordan Martin(New Prairie) vs. #7 Dustin Kern(Peru)

This weight class featured the most upsets of the day.  Only one top four seed survived to see the semi-finals.  The upsets included Tyler Baker falling to Anthony Quiroz, Drake Stein beating Adam Keener, and Dustin Kern topping Tim Forte.  The semi-finals will be interesting as Stein will take on Quiroz in the top half and Jordan Martin the only top seed to make it out will take on Dustin Kern.

      160:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 Quinn Kurtz(Prairie Heights) vs. #4 Richard Morin(Mishawaka)
      #2 Trent Busse(Bellmont) vs. #3 Kurt Monix(Lowell)

The semi-finals at this weight class will feature three ranked wrestlers and will definitely be an interesting semi-final.  #14 Quinn Kurtz will take on unranked Richard Morin and #7 Kurt Monix will take on #16 Trent Busse.

      171:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 George Lopez(Northwood) vs. #5 Henry Waring(East Noble)
      #2 Shelby Mappes(Center Grove) vs. #3 Bryce Grimes(Lawrence North)

This weight is one of the deepest in the tournament with five wrestlers ranked in the top 16 in the state.  One of the first round match-ups featured two ranked wrestlers when #7 Bryce Grimes beat #15 Kourtney Berry.  The semi-finals will feature #5 George Lopez against unranked Henry Waring and #4 Shelby Mappes vs. #7 Bryce Grimes.

      189:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 Brett Worden(Peru) vs. Daniel Sandberg(Lawrence Central)
      #2 Travis Kepner(Benton Central) vs. #6 Dustin Boyd(Mishawaka)

This weight class featured the only unseeded wrestler to make the semi-finals, when Daniel Sandberg of Lawrence Central beat two seeded wrestlers to advance to the semi-finals.  #10 Brett Worden will take on Sandberg in the top half of the bracket, while #15 Travis Kepner will wrestle Dustin Boyd.

      215:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 Billy Baker(Bellmont) vs. #5 Christian Lentz(Mishawaka)
      #2 Nathan Cleveland(Lowell) vs. #3 Kannon Keigley(New Priarie)

This is another great weight class that featured the top three ranked wrestlers in the state along with the #11 ranked wrestler.  The first semi-final match-up will feature #1 Billy Baker against #3 Christian Lentz and the other semi-final will feature #2 Nathan Cleveland vs. #11 Kannon Keigley.  This could easily be a preview of the state semi-finals.

      285:
      Semi-Finals:
      #1 James Travis(Merrillville) vs. #4 Pablo Auces(South Bend Riley)
      #3 Travis Thomas(Mishawaka) vs. #7 Daniel Meyer(Bellmont)

Only one big upset at this weight class, when #7 seed Daniel Meyer beat Zach Stone in overtime by pin.  This weight could feature a finals match-up of the #9 and #10 ranked wrestlers in the state.  #9 James Travis will take on Pablo Auces and #10 Travis Thomas will take on the upset minded Daniel Meyer.

      2023 Fargo 16U Preview

Another stellar group of young wrestlers will head to Fargo with the hopes of bringing back some hardware. Last year’s All-Americans have all moved up to the Junior age division so we’ll have plenty of fresh faces looking to make their mark on the national scene. Many of the wrestlers that will be highlighted have had an immense amount of success in the state of Indiana along with some national accolades that will help them navigate the toughest tournament in the country.

Indiana has always seemed to have a ton of success at the lower weights. This year youngsters Case Bell and Jensen Boyd will be in the mix for spots on the podium. Bell was 9-0 at 16U duals and Boyd was 7-2. State placer Seth Aubin will be in the mix at 120lbs. At 126lbs Indiana will have some great representation in state qualifier Dominic Brown, state placer Eddie Goss, and tough incoming freshman Clinton Shepherd.

Evan Stanley went 9-0 at 16U duals and will come in wrestling well along with state qualifier Elijah Broady. Landon Hawkins and Matthew Staples have both had a lot of national success in the past and will look to make a big splash this year.

State placer Jeffrey Huyvaert and Illinois state qualifier Jairo Acuna will both be in the mix at 145lbs. State qualifiers Silas Stits and Griffin Van Tichelt will both enter the fray at 160lbs. Miguel Rojas has a few Tulsa titles to his name and will look to bring back his first Fargo hardware. Waterloo’s finest James Hartleroad has had a fantastic off-season that saw him go 8-1 at 16U duals.

Cadet Freestylers Take Care of Business on Day One

After two sessions of wrestling at the FargoDome nine Indiana wrestlers are still alive after a day of intense wrestling.  Indiana brought 32 wrestlers into the Cadet Freestyle portion on Wednesday.  Leading the way are five undefeated wrestlers that include: CJ Red, Nick Lee, Dyan Lydy, Randy Scott and Shawn Streck. Red has continued on his hot streak winning his first four matches and receiving a bye. He has had a couple close matches, but the name of the game in Fargo is to win. Nick Lee broke onto the scene after a great performance at the FILA Cadet Nationals and has looked impressive with four tech falls and an injury default.  His path was not easy as he had a Wisconsin state champion in the first round.  Ben Davis Giant Dylan Lydy is the surprise of the group as he is off to a great start and will look to continue winning tomorrow afternoon.  Greco-Roman runner-up Randy Scott has had only three matches with one tech fall and two early pins. Merrillville big man Shawn Streck has two techs and a pin in his three matches as he will look to finish high on the podium again.

Wrestlers with one loss include Penn's Drew Hildebrandt(2-1) and Austin Slates(3-1), Warren Central's Matt McKinney(4-1), and Cathedral's Ben Stewart(4-1).

Eight Junior Survive Freestyle Day One

After two sessions and eight grueling hours of wrestling seven Indiana wrestlers are still alive battling it out for prestigious All-American honors. Five of the seven wrestlers have not suffered a loss yet and each of them is two to four rounds from solidifying a spot on the podium.

Leading the way is Fargo veteran Mitch Sliga who has two falls and a tech fall in his three matches.  He has eight wrestlers left in his pool with four having one loss. Another Hoosier with previous hardware from Fargo is big Wes Bernard. He is undefeated with two falls and two tech falls on the day. He has seven left in his pool with four having a loss.  He is sitting on a bye right now which will help him.  He also has super stud Adam Coon of Michigan looming in the next couple rounds. Brandon James is on a roll looking to make the podium for the 3rd time at Fargo and currently undefeated.

Vinny "the sizzlin' Sicilian" is having a lights out tournament so far. In his first match he defeated a former Fargo finalist and two-time Oklahoma state champion and since then has reeled off three more victories. His pool has 13 wrestlers left with 7 sporting a loss. The last two undefeated wrestlers hail from the Fort Wayne semi-state in Carroll Super Charger Riley Lefever and Kokomo's Fletcher Miller.  Miller has had a breakout year and is looking poised to be on the podium this year.  His pool has seven wrestlers left with three sporting a loss.  Riley Lefever is using the Greco tournament as motivation for dominating on the freestyle side of things.  He has three techs and a pin after the first day. In his first match he teched the Greco 4th place finisher and dispatched a Wisconsin state champ and Ohio state champ in the last two matched by pin and tech fall respectively.  He has nine left in his pool with five having a loss.

The last two wrestlers alive both have one loss, but are battling hard to stay in the tournament. South Bend Riley's Chase Hack has had a surprising tournament winning his first three matches before dropping his final match of the day.  He has 13 left in his pool with 6 having a loss. Lastly, returning All-American Connor Tolley is 3-1 on the day after taking a second round loss. His pool has eight wrestlers left with four having a loss.

Alex Tsirtsis Wrestler of the Week

      From TheMat.com

Iowa's Alex Tsirtsis named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week
      Craig Sesker USA Wrestling
      12/08/2008

Alex Tsirtsis (Griffith, Ind./University of Iowa) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Dec. 2-8.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

The third-ranked Tsirtsis posted a 4-2 win over second-ranked Nick Gallick to lead No. 1 Iowa to a 20-15 win over No. 2 Iowa State on Saturday night before 15,955 fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. It was the largest dual meet crowd in NCAA history.

Tsirtsis' win at 141 pounds provided a huge boost as the Hawkeyes won 6 of 10 matches over the Cyclones. Tsirtsis scored a reversal with one second left in the match to pull out the win.

Tsirtsis, a senior, is in his fourth year as a Hawkeye starter. He placed seventh in the 2006 NCAA Championships. He redshirted during the 2007-08 season before jumping back into the Iowa lineup this season.

      2013 Fort Wayne Semi-State Preview

      106lbs

Head of the Class: Hayden Lee- Garrett
State Streeters:Garrett Pepple- East Noble, Cael McCormick- Yorktown, Blake Glogouski- Fairfield

      The Skinny:
Returning semi-state champion Hayden Lee returns to this weight class and might have to go through a family member to defend his title. Undefeated Garrett Pepple of East Noble looks to be his toughest challenger, but he will have to go through a tough Cael McCormick to get to his cousin.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Ben Cauffman- Carroll vs. Cael McCormick- Yorktown
Blake Glogouski- Fairfield vs. Shane Garretson- Peru

      113lbs

Head of the Class: Connor Knapp- East Noble
State Streeters: Logan Aldrich- Northrop, Sawyer Miller- South Adams, Alan Mock- North Miami

      The Skinny:
This weight class will be quite a battle from start to finish with three returning state qualifiers coming back. Returning state 4th place finisher Sawyer Miller of South Adams will NOT be play wrestling this weekend as he will have stiff competition from Connor Knapp, Logan Aldrich and Alan Mock.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Greg Newman- Whitko vs. Connor Knapp- East Noble
Logan Aldrich- Northrop vs. DeLawrence Gayfield- Concord

      120lbs

Head of the Class: Schuyler Phillips- Yorktown
State Streeters: LJ Moser- South Adams, Sterling Lutter- East Noble, Chase Wilson- Maconaquah

      The Skinny:
There is not much to talk about in this weight...oh wait yes there is! This weight has one of those draws that have the fans and wrestlers just cringe in the potential ticket round match between Forrest Glogouski of Fairfield and Schuyler Phillips of Yorktown. Phillips wrestled under the lights last year and Glogouski finished 6th, both at 113lbs. Phillips defeated Glogouski 3-2 at semi-state last year, however Glogouski topped Phillips at freestyle state later in the spring. Beyond the crazy ticket round match you have to watch the super Starfire LJ Moser and the battlin' Brave Chase Wilson.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Forrest Glogouski- Fairfield vs. Schuyler Phillips- Yorktown
Andrew Ledford- Kokomo vs. Sterling Lutter- East Noble

      126lbs

Head of the Class: Nick Crume- Jimtown
State Streeters: Cody Walburn- Adams Central, Steven Cardenas- Carroll, Brett Martz- Fairfield

      The Skinny:
Semi-state champion and two-time 3rd place finisher Nick Crume returns to 126lbs this year with nothing less than a state title in mind. He will be challenged by Flyin' Jet Cody Walburn who has a chip on his shoulder after dropping a ticket round match last year. Don't sleep on Steven Cardenas or Brett Martz who are both tough competitors.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Cody Walburn- Adams Central vs. Bobby Humphrey- Snider
Kegan Kern- Peru vs. Brett Martz- Fairfield

      132lbs

Head of the Class: Zach Krumlauf- Dekalb
State Streeters: Dalton Baysinger- Yorktown, Benjamin Fiechter- Southern Wells, Cody Koebel- Jimtown

      The Skinny:
This weight class features three very strong wrestlers that will battle it out for the top step on the podium. Two-time state qualifier Zach Krumlauf would love to take the next step to the top of the semi-state, but he will be challenged by stalwarts Dalton Baysinger and Benjamin Fiechter.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Tanner Shippley- Huntington North vs. Cody Koebel- Jimtown
Benjamin Fiechter- Southern Wells vs. Christian Hall- Kokomo

      138lbs

Head of the Class: Chandler Carroll- Yorktown
State Streeters: Evan Loe- Peru, Austun McCray- Garrett, Reese Sieger- New Haven

      The Skinny:
The bracket gods of the IHSAA have separated the top two ranked wrestlers in this weight class which could make for an exciting finals match. Chandler Carroll has two state medals already, while Evan Loe made the trip to Banker's Life last year. Both have had great seasons so far and will look to claim the top spot on the podium in 2013.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Austun McCray- Garrett vs. Jacob Weimer- East Noble
Derek Ellinger- Adams Central vs. Reese Sieger- New Haven
Tylor Willms- Fremont vs. Evan Loe- Peru

      145lbs

Head of the Class: Eli Walker- Yorktown
State Streeters: Levi McKee- North Miami, Kyle Jolas- Huntington North, Tyler Housholder- East Noble

      The Skinny:
This weight class is filled with wrestlers ready to make a name for themselves. Lead by two-time state qualifier Kyle Jolas and Eli Walker, this weight class has the potential to go one of about 12 different ways. Jolas and Walker cannot sleep on tough wrestlers like Levi McKee and Tyler Housholder or else they could be facing a tough draw at state.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Eli Walker- Yorktown vs. Donovan Elliot- Eastbrook
Levi McKee- North Miami vs. Hunter Randolph- Wapahani

      152lbs

Head of the Class: Isaiah Bradley- Muncie South
State Streeters: Connor Brummett- Dekalb, Sebastian Eckert- Huntington North, Chad Gaddis- Kokomo

      The Skinny:
This weight class features a heavy favorite and a couple wrestlers eager to get over the hump. Returning state champion Isaiah Bradley is the class of the field, but he will be challenged by hungry competitors like Connor Brummett and Sebastian Eckert. Eckert and Brummett have both lost tough matches in the ticket round over the past few years with this year looking to be their time to breakout.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Chad Gaddis- Kokomo vs. Tristan Wilson- Carroll
Sebastian Eckert- Huntington North vs. Tim Deters- Northridge

      160lbs

Head of the Class: Rhett Hiestand- Yorktown
State Streeters: Spencer Malcolm- Carroll, Johnny Tredway- Elkhart Central, Kaleb Hammersley- Peru

      The Skinny:
This weight class seems to be very spread out between all the regionals. Returning state qualifier Rhett Hiestand leads the way, but his spotlight could be hogged by a tough Spencer Malcolm.
      Early Round Key Matches:
Spencer Malcolm- Carroll vs. Kaine Luginbill- Adams Central
Kaleb Hammersley- Peru vs. Rashad Jackson-Tatum- New Haven
Johnny Tredway- Elkhart Central vs. Shea Pyle- South Adams

      170lbs

Head of the Class: Riley Lefever- Carroll
State Streeters: Tanner Adams- Jimtown, Anthony Linnear- North Side, Luke Akers- Northwestern

      The Skinny:
The action will heat up at 170lbs this year with quite a barnburner ahead. Thankfully the bracket gods separated the best wrestlers which will give us a great semi-final and finals match. Super Charger Riley Lefever leads the way, but he will be pushed by the winner of the future Findlay Oiler Anthony Linnear and Tanner Adams semi-final.
      Early Round Key Matches:
Luke Akers- Northwestern vs. Jake Reed- Muncie South
Tanner Adams- Jimtown vs. Kody Jones- Concordia
Anthony Linnear- North Side vs. Keair Ross- Kokomo

      182lbs

Head of the Class: Brad Busse- Bellmont
State Streeters: Ben Pfister- Adams Central, Ben Evans- Bishop Dwenger, Russell Hazelet- Columbia City

      The Skinny:
This will also be a great weight to watch as on any given day about one in six wrestlers could come away with the title. Returning state placer Brad Busse leads the way, but will be pushed to the limit by Adams County rival Ben Pfister, Ben Evans and even NHC rival Russell Hazelet.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Ben Evans- Bishop Dwenger vs. Zach Telschow- Northwood
Corey Hinkle- Western vs. Ben Pfister- Adams Central
Russell Hazelet- Columbia City vs. Neil Snep- Manchester

      195lbs

Head of the Class: Kyle Garringer- Jay County
State Streeters: Joseph Ross- Northfield, Tieshawn Johnson- Elkhart Memorial, Everett Green- Bishop Luers

      The Skinny:
The Dunkirk Dragonslayer Kyle Garringer heads into semi-state this year with an unblemished record and looks to keep it intact after the dust settles. He will be pushed by tough wrestlers like the fighting Norseman Joe Ross and Tieshawn Johnson.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Everett Green- Bishop Luers vs. Zach Goodyear- West Noble
Tieshawn Johnson- Elkhart Memorial vs. Brian Richardson- Churubusco

      220lbs

Head of the Class: Fletcher Miller- Kokomo
State Streeters: Nolan Wilson- Leo, Jason Nicodemus- Churubusco, Bradley Joseph Sadilek- Carroll

      The Skinny:
As with last year this weight class features two undefeated wrestlers, along with that the only returning state qualifier has only one blemish on his record. Fletcher Miller of Kokomo and Jason Nicodemus have both had breakout seasons and come into the Memorial Coliseum undefeated. Don't sleep on the ferocious Lion Nolan Wilson as he is the only one in the field with state experience.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Fletcher Miller- Kokomo vs. Jacob Strauch- Muncie Southside
Nolan Wilson- Leo vs. Brandon Joest- East Noble
Brad Sadilek- Carroll vs. Briar Gerber- Bluffton

      285lbs

Head of the Class: Eric Hemmelgarn- Jay County
State Streeters: Matt Beard- Eastside, Drake DeMuyt- East Noble, Hayden Schmucker- Goshen

      The Skinny:
Leaving before the heavyweights are done will be a grave mistake this year. This weight class is probably the most even throughout and could boast a big upset in every round. Lead by the pride of Portland Eric Hemmelgarn this weight will also feature undefeated the Butler Bully Matt Beard and double D Drake DeMuyt.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Matt Beard- Eastside vs. Jacob Peckham- Monroe Central
Chris Travis- Eastern vs. Hayden Schmucker- Goshen

This year's Junior Freestyle team is one of the best to go in recent memory with over half of the entries having state experience. This year's team will be once again led by Fargo veteran Mitch Sliga. He won four stop signs as a cadet, but failed to place last year as a junior. After capturing his second state title this February he finished 7th at FILA Junior Nationals. Four other wrestlers all have been on the podium in Fargo as a cadet.  Perry Meridian's Jacob Cottey and Brandon James will both be looking for their first podium appearance as a junior. Both are two time state placers and have extensive freestyle experience.

Another Indianapolis Southsider, Wes Bernard, will be making his first appearance as a junior after placing in both styles as a cadet in 2011. Another big guy looking to make his mark is Connor Tolley who placed in both styles last year, including a runner-up finish in Greco-Roman.

State champions Deondre Wilson and Tommy Forte will be both tough outs and will wrestle deep into the tournament. State runner-ups Vinny Corsaro, Austin McCloskey, Riley Lefever and Fletcher Miller will all be in contention for a spot on the podium.  Wrestling will start on Thursday and wrap up on Saturday morning.

Stevan Micic Wrestling at the Dapper Dan Classic

Stevan Micic will become the sixth wrestler from Indiana to wrestle at the prestigious Dapper Dan Classic this weekend. Micic will face off against Zeke Moisey of Bethlehem Catholic who is ranked 3rd via FloWrestling and Intermat along with 4th by TheOpenMat. Micic is ranked 1st by FloWrestling and Intermat, while he is ranked 3rd by TheOpenMat.

Moisely is a one time champion in Pennsylvania in their AA division, which is the biggest schools in Pennsylvania. He had a career record of 141-14 along with placements of 3rd, 4th and 7th in the state tournament.  Moisely is a three-time Super 32 placer, placing 4th the past year. He placed second at the Beast of the East in both 2009 and 2010. Lastly, he won a FloNationals title in 2012 and finished in 4th last year.

Of the five wrestlers from Indiana that have participated in the Dapper Dan, none have lost a match. Steven Bradley was the first participant in 1998, while Alex Tsirtsis and Blake Maurer participated in 2004. In 2012 both Jarred Brooks and Jason Tsirtsis both participated in the event. Former Indiana state champion Nathan Boston will also be wrestling at 120lbs against Nathan Boston. Also, two time IndianaMat Hoosier Preseason Open champion Josh Alber of Illinois will wrestle at 132lbs against Ian Brown.

You can watch the action live on FloWrestling Saturday via their paid subscription.

      Tsirtsis into Cadet Freestyle Finals

      [caption id=" align="alignleft" width="360" caption="Jason Tsirtsis Cadet Freestyle Finalist][/caption]

Jason Tsirtsis has continued his dominating ways winning his last pool match 4-0, 7-0.  This was his first decision of the tournament so far.  Only one person has scored on him during the tournament.  Tsirtsis is 8-0 for the tournament with two pins, four tech falls, one decision and one win by injury default.  He will most likely face Illinois stud Eddy Cooper in the finals. The Cadet finals being at 1pm CST.

Mason Todd wrestled a special bout to determine whether he would take some hardware home or not and came away with an impressive pin.  He picked his opponent up in a double leg and put him down for the fall.  Todd will be going for 7th place.

Brenden Campbell is making up for his missed action in the state tournament by having a great tournament and earning All-American honors.  Campbell is 5-2 and will be wrestling for 7th place.

The Juniors dwindling down to the last few in each weight class and we will know for sure what Juniors have earned All-American honors tonight.

      Cadets Finish Strong in Freestyle

With four remaining wrestlers today the cadet freestylers made the most of their opportunities. Leading the way were Nick Lee and Shawn Streck who both garnered a bronze medal, while Dylan Lydy and Randy Scott took home 4th and 8th respectively.

Nick Lee made the most of his first Fargo appearance dominating everyone in his path except eventual champion Zahid Valencia of California.  In fact Valencia teched or pinned everyone....but Nick Lee during the tournament.  That is absolutely impressive for the incoming freshman.  Lee will have an extremely bright future and many in Indiana are excited to see him wrestle at Banker's Life Fieldhouse.

Shawn Streck made waves this year placing at state at heavyweight as a freshman and has continued on an impressive pace. It is rare for a heavyweight this young to be so polished, but he has great poise combined with technique and strength. He took 3rd in freestyle and 4th in Greco-Roman this week to leave Fargo with double the hardware. He will definitely be a contender for a few state titles the next three years.

Dylan Lydy burst on the scene this week with an absolutely impressive performance. This regional qualifier for Ben Davis this year bumped up three weight classes from the high school season and had a fantastic tournament. He is not going to fly anyone's radar any more.

Lastly, Mooresville's Randy Scott had an outstanding week wrestling in the Greco-Roman finals on Monday and then placing 8th in freestyle on Friday.  This Pioneer big man is poised to have a great scholastic season this year.
      Cadet-126 - Nick Lee's place is 3rd.

Coming off a 4th place finish at the Cadet National Duals in freestyle Team Indiana is looking to bring back a lot of hardware after the dust settles in Fargo. This year's team will feature five wrestlers who were on the floor at Banker's Life Fieldhouse this year along with three others that have had national success. Leading the way will be Shawn Streck and CJ Red. Both wrestlers finished an impressive 4th in the Greco-Roman portion and were undefeated at the cadet duals.  Another wrestler to watch is incoming freshman Nick Lee.  Lee was super impressive at the FILA Cadet Nationals(ages 15-17) finishing second in an extremely deep field.

Another Mater Dei wrestler to watch is Will Egli who started the week out well with an 8th place finish and looks to improve upon that in freestyle. State placer Drew Hildebrandt will contend for a spot on the podium at a more natural weight of 100lbs after placing 8th at 106lbs during the season.  Jacob Cavins and Randy Scott are both hoping to be on the podium after placing in Greco-Roman.

      2012 Fort Wayne Semi-State Preview

      106lbs

Head of the Class: Hayden Lee- Garrett
State Streeters: Sawyer Miller- South Adams, Connor Knapp- East Noble, Alan Mock- North Miami

      The Skinny:
The little Railroader that could, Hayden Lee, leads the field in this weight class. He has defeated Miller twice this season by identical 4-0 scores and also defeated Knapp 4-2. Knapp and Miller are definitely capable of pulling of the mild upset if Lee does not come ready to wrestle.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Tyler Rigney- Muncie South vs. Seth Lloyd- Marion
Ben Cauffman- Carroll vs. Delawence Gayfield- Concord
      Knapp vs. Rigney/Lloyd winner

      113lbs

Head of the Class: Schuyler Phillips- Yorktown
State Streeters: Forrest Glogouski- Fairfield, Matt Frane- Dekalb, LJ Moser- South Adams

      The Skinny:
Returning state qualifier Schuyler Phillips has quietly put together an impressive season. He comes in with only one loss to a super stud out of Michigan. He could be tested early on in the ticket round by Cody Flickinger of Elkhart Memorial and in the semi-finals and finals.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Matt Frane- Dekalb vs. Sam Lovejoy- Bishop Luers
Cody Flickinger- Elkhart Memorial vs. Schuyler Phillips- Yorktown

      120lbs

Head of the Class: Zach Krumlauf- Dekalb
State Streeters: Cody Walburn- Adams Central, Brock Bevans- Yorktown, Bobby Keuneke- Bellmont

      The Skinny:
This is a wide open weight class that will could shape up a multitude of ways after the dust has settled. Zach Krumlauf of Dekalb leads the way, but he will have to get by Brock Bevans of Yorktown in the semi-finals. Bevans and Krumlauf wrestled last year at semi-state and state at 103lbs, but Krumlauf will have the size advantage this time. In the other half of the bracket there could be the third Adams County throwdown between Keuneke and Walburn where Keuneke has won both matches so far this year.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Bobby Keuneke- Bellmont vs. Kegan Kern- Peru
Cody Walburn- Adams Central vs. Erique Early- Snider

      126lbs

Head of the Class: Nick Crume- Jimtown
State Streeters: Chandler Carroll- Yorktown, Kalib Jackson- East Noble, Mason Meling- Snider

      The Skinny:
The bracket gods separated Crume and Carroll which will make for a great finals matchup between the two former state 3rd place finishers. Both Crume and Carroll have been battle tested this year, so look for a great match in the finals.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Mason Meling- Snider vs. Benjamin Fiechter- Southern Wells
Kalib Jackson- East Noble vs. Gabe Flores- Marion

      132lbs

Head of the Class: Todd Batt- South Adams
State Streeters: Derek Roe- Adams Central, Kody George- Homestead, Jared Wilson- Snider

      The Skinny:
This weight will be one of the most exciting weights to watch all day long with four returning state qualifiers along with Al Smith 2nd and 3rd place finishers and a Connersville 2nd place finisher in the field. We could also see round three of another Adams County throwdown in the finals between Batt and Roe, but that is only if they make it that far. There are many sleepers in the field here and no wrestler should be overlooked.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Todd Batt- South Adams vs. Tylor Willms- Fremont
Jared Wilson- Snider vs. Alex Mix- Dekalb
Evan Loe- Peru vs. AJ Grim- West Noble
Loe/Grim winner vs. Derek Roe- Adams Central
Trevor Echartea- Elkhart Central vs. Kody George- Homestead

      138lbs

Head of the Class: Devon Jackson- Yorktown
State Streeters: Michael Nix- Bishop Dwenger, Kyle Jolas- Huntington North, Lucas Riecke- East Noble

      The Skinny:
This is another great weight class, the only difference is there is a clear cut favorite and the other three positions are up for grabs. Two-time state runner-up and Purdue signee, Devon Jackson, leads the field here with an unblemished record. He has taken an undefeated record into the finals the past two years, only to come up short. There are three other state qualifiers in the field, but none are going to have an easy road to getting back to state street.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Kyle Jolas- Huntington North vs. Ronnie Bogle- Elkhart Memorial
Lucas Riecke- East Noble vs. Brayden Moreau- Garrett

      145lbs

Head of the Class: Brooks Faurote- Bellmont
State Streeters: Cody Zink- Woodlan, Sebastian Eckert- Huntington North, Levi McKee- North Miami

      The Skinny:
This is another weight class where the bracket gods separated arguably the top two wrestlers. Faurote has been lights out all season long and will look to continue a deep Brave tradition with a semi-state championship. He will be challenged by Cody Zink of Woodlan has had as many semi-state heartbreaks as any wrestler ever.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Levi McKee- North Miami vs. Conner Brummett- Dekalb
Rhett Hiestand- Yorktown vs. Sebastian Eckert- Huntington North

      152lbs

Head of the Class: Isaiah Bradley- Muncie South
State Streeters: Dewey Melcher- Bellmont, Zeke Schultz- Adams Central, Frank Martin- Homestead

      The Skinny:
The top quarter bracket of this weight is absolutely stacked with two former state qualifiers facing off in the first round in Zeke Schultz of Adams Central and Carter Delaney of Bishop Dwenger. The winner gets to wrestle Zach Beebe of Angola who has quietly had a great season. Isaiah Bradley of Muncie South looks to be the head of the class here, but he will be challenged all day long including in the ticket round against Al Smith champion Ryan Ntende.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Carter Delaney- Bishop Dwenger vs. Zeke Schultz- Adams Central
Delaney/Schultz winner vs. Zach Beebe- Angola
Isaiah Bradley- Muncie South vs. Ryan Ntende- Goshen

      160lbs

Head of the Class: Jesse Goodnight- Kokomo
State Streeters: Isaac Stuery- Leo, Casey Adams- Jimtown, Brian Dick- Maconaquah

      The Skinny:
This weight class will have four great ticket round match-ups with no wrestler a lock to punch their ticket to state. Goodnight is the favorite here, but will be challenged by Riley Lefever of Carroll. Steury will be pushed by Aaron Mason of Dekalb, Dick will have a tough foe in Chantz Luginbill of Adams Central and finally Adams will be challenged by Kyle Walters of Union City.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Jesse Goodnight- Kokomo vs. Riley Lefever- Carroll
Isaac Steury- Leo vs. Aaron Mason- Dekalb
Brian Dick- Maconaquah vs. Chantz Luginbill- Adams Central
Casey Adams- Jimtown vs. Kyle Walters- Union City

      170lbs

Head of the Class: Tanner Adams- Jimtown
State Streeters: Anthony Linnear- North Side, Garrett Weber- Leo, Blake Rodenbeck- East Noble

      The Skinny:
If you wrestle this weight class 10 times, you are bound to get 10 different results. Tanner Adams looks to be the head of the class here, but do not count out Linnear or Weber to pull out a minor upset. Linnear is big, strong and athletic and finished 3rd at Connersville, while Adams won an equally tough weight at the Al Smith. The darkhorse is Weber who is the only wrestler in this weight with state experience.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Blake Rodenbeck- East Noble vs. Jake Reed- Muncie South
Tanner Adams- Jimtown vs. Kody Jones- Concordia

      182lbs

Head of the Class: Brad Busse- Bellmont
State Streeters: Cody Conrad- Heritage, Ben Pfister- Adams Central, Jake Wiechmann- Western

      The Skinny:
This weight class could easily be dominated by the ACAC conference with a potential of three state qualifier from this tough small school conference. Busse has had three barn burners with Pfister, but he may get to avoid seeing him for the third straight week if Conrad defeats Pfister again. All four ticket round matches will be good ones with some great wrestlers in each quarter bracket.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Carson Volheim- Elkhart Central vs. Ben Pfister- Adams Central
Cody Conrad- Heritage vs. Corey Crabtree- Muncie South
Jake Wiechmann- Western vs. Trevon Carr- Leo
Brad Busse- Bellmont vs. Ben Evans- Bishop Dwenger

      195lbs

Head of the Class: Spencer Raypole- Carroll
State Streeters: Ben Baker- Bellmont, Austin Gibson- Garrett, Bo Butler- Kokomo

      The Skinny:
This weight will also be a fun one with four wrestlers leading the way that are extremely close to each other. Raypole and Baker have split matches this year, while Gibson has five of his six losses to both Raypole and Baker by a combined total of eight points. You cannot count out Bo Butler of Kokomo who comes into the coliseum undefeated.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Bo Butler- Kokomo vs. Kyle Garringer- Jay County
Austin Gibson- Garrett vs. Tieshawn Johnson- Elkhart Memorial

      220lbs

Head of the Class: Seth Biberstine- Southern Wells
State Streeters: Chase Spears- Elkhart Memorial, Cameron Colby- Kokomo, Nolan Wilson- Leo

      The Skinny:
Two undefeated wrestlers highlight this weight class in returning state placer Colby and Biberstine. Biberstine did not wrestle last year due to injury, but has absolutely dominated everyone in his path this year. The bottom half of the bracket lacks any undefeated wrestlers, but will consist of some great matches.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Cameron Colby- Kokomo vs. Travis Carunchia- Garrett
Isaac Birch- Bellmont vs. Chase Spears- Elkhart Memorial

      285lbs

Head of the Class: Dominique Stauffer- Elkhart Central
State Streeters: Ta-Quan Walker- North Side, Eric Hemmelgarn- Jay County, Jimmy Ulerick- Maconaquah

      The Skinny:
Do not leave until this weight is finishes as from top to bottom this could be the most competitive weight in Fort Wayne. This weight class features nine wrestlers with less than five losses on the year, with most of them to each other. Two returning state qualifiers also highlight this weight class, but neither have an easy path to return to state. Dominique Stauffer looks to be the favorite with a hungry pack of wolves nipping at his heals.

      Early Round Key Matches:
Ta’Quan Walker- North Side vs. Brandon Daniels- Goshen
Andrew Amos- Angola vs. Jimmy Ulerick- Maconaquah
Amos/Ulerick winner vs. Kyle Short- Norwell
Andrew Mason- Huntington North vs. Eric Hemmelgarn- Jay County
Dominique Stauffer- Elkhart Central vs. Matt Beard- Eastside

      Dingo’s Breakdown
If it’s not Red, it’s: Lee or Sinkovics. Honestly, take all three and throw them in a hat and pick one. I chose Red by an eyelash, as Lee has been money in rematches and Sink

Darkhorse(s): it’s hard to call SInkovics and Lee darkhorses, but on paper neither is the favorite. This weight really is a three horse race.

Upset alert: Mike Garza over D.J. Smith (returning state qualifiers meet in a pick ‘em), Drew Hildebrandt over Terrance Kennedy (Hildebrandt’s record is deceiving—he’s wrestled EVERYONE), Brett Johnson over Garrett Pepple (same thing for Johnson as Hildebrandt) and Cael McCormick over Matt McKinney

      Inside Y2’s Mind
Why: Serving up some home cookin’ with these picks, but when they materialize I will look like a genius. This weight class has three wrestlers enter with zero losses and three others with only a single loss. It will be a barn burner from beginning to end and when the dust settles it could go down as the most exciting weight class of the weekend.

      Bracket Busters:
Terrence Kennedy- He is the lone senior in the group and may give Red all he can handle on Saturday morning.

Cael McCormmick- He has the pedigree, he has the skills, and he has the intangibles to break many people’s brackets

      Karl's Komments

The little guys should provide big fireworks this weekend as the four semi-state champs are a combined 143-1. Mishawaka's Jake Sinkovics (42-0) and Garrett's Hayden Lee (36-1) are both juniors who have a lot of high school experience. Sinkovics owns a victory over Lee this season but Lee has experience at the state finals. The other two semi-state champs both come in with unblemished records. Freshmen Brock Hudkins (21-0) and Chad Red (44-0) have dominated this season.

      Dingo’s Breakdown
If it’s not Micic, it’s: Cottey, but realistically, it’s Micic and no one else. This is one of just a few mortal lock weight classes.

Darkhorse(s): There really is no darkhorse to win the weight, but Zach Davis got red hot last year at State, and could do so again.

Upset alert: Mastison over Davis, Torres over Brown (this is a pick’em), Miller over Chastain (Chastain already beat Miller this year, but it was a tight one), Baker over Gayfield (Baker has some pretty solid leg defense)

      Inside Y2’s Mind
Why: Micic is the class of the field and him getting beat would rank up with some of the biggest upsets in state finals history. Of course anything can happen, but Micic hasn’t broken a sweat this year and could put on an Andrew Howe type performance this weekend.

      Bracket Busters:
Zach Davis- This is his third trip to state, he is no stranger to the big matches.

Sawyer Miller- He was in the semi-finals last year and a tough competitor that will not go down without a fight.

      Karl's Komments

Region rats continue to crow about the quality of wrestler produced by Lake County. They will get no argument from me when they mention Hanover Central's Steven Micic. A state champion last year, this junior is currently ranked #2 in the country. It appears to be a one man race with everyone else chasing. Reitz' senior Damon Kuhn is battle tested and a semi-state champ. Perry Meridian would love to see junior Jacob Cottey make a deep run to help their team's chances of a title. East Noble's Conner Knapp has quietly put together an awesome season.

Best First Round Match Up – Sawyer Miller (40-2) 10 South Adams vs. Jack Chastain (37-1) 10 Hamilton Southeastern.

      Dingo’s Breakdown
If it’s not Phillips, it’s: Hughes (The Lowell freshman has been lights out all year and is certainly capable of winning it all. Only his youth gives me pause), Deondre Wilson, Adam Garcia (highest returning placer at this weight).

Darkhorse(s): Moser has a postseason win over Phillips, which shows that he can go with anyone. Martin is a talented and dynamic wrestler and could pose problems for Phillips

Upset alert: Mantel over Davis (Davis beat Mantel in OT earlier, but Mantel is wrestling his best now), Eldred over Lahue (Eldred had one regular season loss and Westfield has a tough schedule. He is going to be special before it’s all said and done in high school)

      Inside Y2’s Mind
Why: This weight has been the one filled with lots of opinions on who and why certain wrestlers will come out on top. The top five wrestlers are all contenders for the blue medal. Drew Hughes has had a phenomenal freshman campaign and looks to cap it off on top of the podium. He will have to go through a battle tested senior in Schuyler Phillips and then get through one of what seems a dozen contenders in the bottom bracket.

      Bracket Busters:
Adam Garcia- He was a top four finisher last year and has the tools to get to the finals. He is no sleeper, but one that many are writing off.

Bailey LaHue- Coming from a school not exactly a wrestling power house he is as legit as they come. He already has one state medal and don’t blink if he is under the lights and on top of the podium.

      Karl's Komments

The quality and depth at 120 rivals any weight class in the state this year. Yorktown senior Schuyler Phillips rebounded in impressive fashion at semi-state after a regional hiccup. Lowell's baby monster Drew Hughes is terrifying on top. From the deep south comes Corydon's Bailey Lahue and Warren Central brings undefeated Deondre Wilson from the East Side of Indy. Another three or four wrestlers possess the skills needed to upset the semi-state champs.

Best First Round Match Up – Adam Garcia (34-2) 12 Merrillville vs. Andrew Ledford (45-4) 12 Kokomo

Best Quarterfinal Clash – Bailey Lahue (38-2) 10 Corydon vs. LJ Moser (28-1) 12 South Adams

      Dingo’s Breakdown
If it’s not James, it’s: Crume, although I’m sure most people have Crume as the favorite. He has been nothing short of dominant this year and it’s hard to find any flaw in his game. Gettinger looked the part of a state champ at semi-state and will be a very tough out for anyone.

Darkhorse(s): Since Crume is basically a favorite or co-favorite, I’ll go with Gettinger. The Connersville standout is excellent on his feet and probably even better on the mat. Throw in a plus gastank and you have yourself a real stud.

Upset alert: James over Crume, Gettinger over Crume (Obviously, I feel that New Castle is very strong at this weight)

      Inside Y2’s Mind
Why: The magic coin got a workout in this weight class. The quarter-finals alone features at least three matches that many throughout the year have said would be state finals matches. Crume has been the most consistent over the year and seems primed to bring a blue medal back to Baugo. He will be pushed and shoved from every direction and one slip up could land one of about six wrestlers on the top step of the podium.

      Bracket Busters:
Luke Welch- I hate to call a kid with two state medals and the family history he does a bracket buster. He has the tools to make me toss my bracket out the window.

Tom Gettinger- Another that is hard to call a bracket buster after his big win over James last week. He will have to fend off 2011 state runner-up Josh Fuqua to make the semi-finals then take on stalwart Crume to make the finals.

      Karl's Komments

Prognosticators have been anticipating a Nick Crume-Brandon James match up in the state finals since the start of the season. No one was mentioning Connersville senior Tom Gettinger then, but they all know about him now. Evansville semi-state champ Luke Welch is a seasoned and tough wrestler who has already committed to Purdue. Welch also needs to be mentioned in the state title discussion. Jimtown's Nick Crume has quietly throttled all competition this season.

Best First Round Match Up – Dylan Logsdon (29-8) 12 Portage vs. Tyler Feener (40-3) 11 Center Grove

      Dingo’s Breakdown
If it’s not LeCount, it’s: Moss (Coach’s son returns again to the State meet, looking for the ultimate prize. While he is as tough and solid as they come, beating LeCount is probably too much to ask)

Darkhorse(s): Again, it’s hard to call a returning two-time placer and 2nd ranked coach’s son a dark horse, but Hartman should meet Moss in the quarterfinals. If he can get by Moss, Hartman is capable of a state finals appearance.

Upset alert: Snyder over Burlison (Snyder is a scrappy dude, and his record is misleading. The former state qualifier has been rounding into shape and will be dangerous), Broukal over Krumlauf (hard to bet against the two-time qualifier and 4th ranked Dekalb wrestler, but Broukal won a big Friday night match last year and looks to repeat history), Fiechter over Moss (tough senior and returning state qualifier won’t roll over for Moss), Perez over Hartman (nasty draw for the talented Hot Dawg wrestler. Slick and tough, he could give Hartman a hard time), Wedding over Baysinger (not much of an upset as they are #11 and #10, respectively) and Lile over Martsolf (Lile looked much better at semi-state than regionals and sectionals). This is a deep and tough bracket, but LeCount is a notch above the rest of the strong field.

      Inside Y2’s Mind
Why: My (not so) expert opinion is this is a two horse race. The favorite is LeCount with only two career losses, I don’t see him suffering any more in his a career. He will not have an easy time navigating the bracket with landmines like Moss, Hartman and Broukal placed throughout the bracket.

      Bracket Busters:
Mitch Hartman- He is a two time placer and made the semi-finals as a sophomore. Don’t overlook the possibility of him making the semi-finals or finals.

Dalton Baysinger- He is a tough competitor that has the ability to make a deep run. With great defense and very opportune offense he can make any match a winnable match.

      Karl's Komments

Perry Meridian's Cody LeCount has been the lead dog in this weight class from the start of the season and he has handled that pressure admirably, running the table with a perfect 36-0 record. Veteran Ben Davis Giant Levi Moss is the brackets other unbeaten but a combination of a brutal quarter bracket and some injury issues might make the way for some one else to bully their way to the podium. Fort Wayne semi-state champ Dalton Baysinger had a great day at the Coliseum, knocking off perviously unbeaten Zach Krumlauf of DeKalb. Trevor Burlison of Crown Point often gets overshadowed by some of his teammates but he has a great opportunity for a deep run.

      Dingo’s Breakdown
If it’s not Forte, it’s: Blanton (It’s hard to be much more impressive than Blanton was at New Castle this past weekend, but beating Forte is quite a task for the tough two-time placer).

Darkhorse(s): Carroll has had a phenomenal career already and looks to add to his hardware. He is plenty dangerous in this class. Bova has wrestled everyone and, outside of the unusual match vs Blanton, he can hang with anyone.

Upset alert: Wagner over Hupp (Wagner appeared to be injured by the end of the day at semi-state. If he is healthy, he is very dangerous. If he can’t go, his replacement Chase Watson of HSE is plenty tough in his own right and will push Hupp)

      Inside Y2’s Mind
Why: The past two years Blanton has been a bracket buster and pulled crazy upsets at state. Will he be able to do it for a third time? This weight has three wrestlers that stand out in Forte, Blanton and Carroll. Each has taken home hardware from state before, but none have wrestled under the lights.

      Bracket Busters:
Anthony McHugh- He has been to state three times, but never come home with any hardware. This year will be different for the future Air Force Falcon. Don’t be surprised if he makes the finals.

Nick Bova- Never under estimate a wrestler with two state medals from the perennial state power. Bova has all the tools necessary to make a deep run at Bankers Life.

      Karl's Komments

Personally, this weight class contains some of my favorite wrestlers to watch in the state. New Castle semi-state champ Luke Blanton of Alexandria is a dynamic athlete that has provided many thrills for the fans in Indy. Also on this side of the bracket is Indian Creek's Tyler Hupp. Hupp has state experience and comes in as a semi state champ. Don't overlook Peru's Evan Loe or Culver Military's Anthony McHugh, either one could be a dark horse state finalists. The other side of the bracket shakes out with Yorktown's Chandler Carroll and Mishawaka's Tommy Forte being the odds on favorites to reach the semis.

If it’s not Molloy, it’s: Kelley (It’s very unlikely that anyone will get Molloy, but Kelley appears to have the best chance).

Darkhorse(s): Handley might have some health concerns, but if he’s healthy he could be battling Molloy under the lights.

Upset alert: Jolas over Johns (Two-time state qualifier might be able to get by the tough-riding Johns), McKee over Handley (Handley impressed me as far back as last year, but his injury clouds his weekend outlook), Mammolenti over Kelley (the tough Penn wrestler has wrestled a brutal schedule and has been able to hang with the big dogs), Campbell over Walker (there is some familiarity there as they competed in the same semi-state two years ago and Campbell has a knack for snatching victory from the jaws of defeat), Ferguson over Roadruck (on paper, the Lowell wrestler is a big favorite, but Ferguson is riding some serious momentum), Elsea over Macri, potential quarterfinals match (Elsea is a tough senior and could follow in fellow Dragon Connor Robinson’s amazing state run last year)

      Inside Y2’s Mind
Why: Neal Molloy is one of the top wrestlers in the state and nation. He placed at Fargo and Super 32 this offseason with this year focused on his second state title. Last year it was shown that he can be derailed, but don’t expect that this year.

      Bracket Busters:
Cody Handley- Coming off a semi-state championship he has not gotten the press others have as a contender for a high spot on the podium.

Mitch Roadruck- He is a great competitor that has had his season overshadowed by the Hughes brothers. He has been around the block and could sneak into the finals if you aren’t careful.

      Karl's Komments

Two titans from the south appear to have separated themselves in the race for the crown at 145. Danville's Neal Molloy has wrestled under the lights before and has national credentials. His semi state rival Brendon Kelley of Evansville Central wrestles a wide open style. A match up in the finals between these two would surely entertain the crowd. A host of other talented grapplers will look to knock the two front runners off their perch. Eli Walker of Yorktown and Tristan Macri of Mishawaka don't get as much ink as their teammates but both are battle tested warriors.

Best First Round Match Up – Neal Molloy (39-0) 12 Danville vs. Chris Katsafaros (39-3) 12 Chesterton

      Dingo’s Breakdown

If it’s not Bradley, it’s: Farrell-The three-time state placer looks to add another placement to his collection. He puts up a lot of points and is pretty strong in all aspects, Corsaro-Like Farrell, Corsaro is attempting to become a rare four-time state placer. Also like Farrell, he is a returning state runner-up. Corsaro is solid on his feet and especially on the mat and, like his previous two seasons, appears to be peaking in the postseason. Bradley is the favorite, but he will have to work for his repeat bid.

Darkhorse(s): Corsaro, Farrell, #4 Schurg—I realize it’s a little strange to have him here when I picked him to be “upset” by Bennett, but his only two losses on the year are to Illinois studs and he is a returning state qualifier.

Upset alert: Bennett over #4 Schurg (Bennett is a stud, and this is a lot closer matchup than the majority of 1-4 matches), #12 Brummett over Partee (not really an upset, except according to the rankings), #11 Ferdig over Borta (Ferdig was 2nd in his semi-state, Borta was 3rd; they are pretty closely ranked and had roughly similar seasons), #13 Manspeaker over Corsaro (tough draw for the senior from Penn, but he is tough and battle-tested)

      Inside Y2’s Mind

Why: This weight class has been shaping up all season to be one of the most anticipated of the weekend with three wrestlers in the mix that have experience under the lights. The question all season was could Isaiah Bradley defend his title. So far he is unblemished, but has yet to face the top competitors in the weight class. He is one that you cannot count out and when the lights are on he seems to shine the brightest. He will be pushed by three-time medalist Josh Farrell who has been lights out all season long. You cannot count out Vinny Corsaro who wrestled under the lights last year to make a run for the top step.

      Bracket Busters:

Brayden Montgomery- He doesn’t come in with the credentials the rest of the top contenders in this weight do, but he has the skills to pull a few upsets.

Dusty Schurg- Growing up with 18 brothers you know he is tough as nails and one that won’t crack under pressure. Like Montgomery he has the tools needed to surprise folks this weekend.

      Karl's Komments

Defending state champion Isaiah Bradley of Muncie South headlines the 152 pound class but does not appear to be a clear cut favorite to repeat. Many think that Greenfield Central's Josh Farrell possesses the arsenal to take out Bradley. Crown Point veteran Dusty Schurg knows how to win close matches and Cathedral's Vinny Corsaro was a state runner up one year ago.

      Dingo’s Breakdown

If it’s not McCloskey, it’s: #2 Hughes-In a strange twist of fate, Hughes and McCloskey meet up on Friday night for the second year in a row. McCloskey won last year’s battle, and the Lowell stud has a great shot at running the table if he can get by the Western Boone standout, Rypel-It’s very hard to believe this kid is only a freshman. He’s very, very slick and solid in all aspects….Oh, and very dangerous as well, McClurg-The Perry standout senior just proved he can beat anyone in the state when he handed McCloskey his first loss all season.

Darkhorse(s): Kriech-How does this defending state runner-up (losing a very close Finals match in the process) get lost in the sauce? He is very capable of another deep run. Maldonado-He has only one loss all year, to Hughes, which he avenged at semi-state. Parkinson-The EMD senior has been tough all year, and the bracket is set up for a run to the finals if he gets hot.

Upset alert: #11 Gomez over Rypel (tough senior matches up with freshman phenom), #16 Krege over Maldonado (record is a little misleading with Krege, the Pendoski-trained junior who has improved steadily the past year), #12 Hollins over McClurg (Tough junior doesn’t have a sterling record, but has wrestled a tough schedule and has some nice wins)

      Inside Y2’s Mind

Why: Oh boy, oh boy, OH BOY! About 8:30pm on Friday all eyes will be on mat 2 to watch a match one week ago many were predicting for the state finals. Both Austin McCloskey and Kenny Hughes suffered their first losses of the year last week and their reward is a first round match-up that many will be talking about for years. Last year McCloskey won on Friday night against Hughes by the score of 5-1. This weight is one of the most wide open weights with the top half of the bracket absolutely loaded. The winner of McCloskey and Hughes will feel like they won the showcase showdown as they will get last year’s runner-up Luke Kriech. On the bottom half of the bracket you have a red hot Riley McClurg and an always dangerous Mater Dei wrestler in Mahlon Parkinson. In all honesty this weight class has about 14 bracket busters in it.

      Bracket Busters:

Mahlon Parkinson- Never, never, never count out a Mater Dei wrestler to make a deep run. This year, he is my pick to bust up some brackets.

Blake Rypel- The super frosh is extremely talented and is poised to make things interesting this weekend.

Seth Seitzinger- He is a solid wrestler who wrestles a style that puts him in every match. Don’t count him out to make it under the lights on Saturday.

      Karl's Komments

Friday night's clash between Austin McCloskey of Western Boone and Lowell's Kenny Hughes could be one for the ages. These two ended the season ranked in the top five in the state and by luck of the draw, they will face off on Friday night. Perry Meridian's Riley McClurg and Highland's Mark Maldonado are responsible for the exciting Friday night match up and these two will look to continue the momentum they gained last Saturday. Seth Seitzinger of Bloomington South and Rhett Hiestand of Yorktown are both semi state champs who could make deep runs in this bracket.

      Dingo’s Breakdown

If it’s not Steveson, it’s: Lefever-The senior from Carroll looks like Steveson’s only real challenge for supremacy at this weight. He is undefeated and has beaten most opponents pretty badly.

Darkhorse(s): Neibarger-The HSE senior hasn’t been able to match his freshman magic, when he placed in a tough upper weight class. He has an extremely tough first round match and, if he wins, he gets Steveson. If he can get by the first two matches, he could go all the way. Sopko-He has only three losses (despite being in Steveson’s proximity) and is returning placer

Upset alert: #8 Adams over Neibarger (The Jimtown senior is a rough opener for Neibarger…this could go either way), #16 Fentz over Sopko (Fentz has wrestled nearly every tough team in the state and won’t be intimidated by Sopko)

      Inside Y2’s Mind

Why: This weight features two undefeated wrestlers in Steveson and Lefever both on a collision course under the lights. Steveson has beaten Lefever the few times they have wrestled including a one point match in the fall of 2011. This could be quite a match-up as both have great gas tanks and are not shy about putting points on the board. Of course they will have to navigate the field that features some very tough wrestlers like Rickenbaugh, Galvin, Linnear and Adams.

      Bracket Busters:

Anthony Linnear- Hard to call him a bracket buster after placing third last year, but he is still a wildcard. He will give every opponent a tough match-up.

Scottie Sopko- Another one that is hard to call a bracket buster. The quarter-final match between him and Lefever will most likely wrestle under the lights.

Tanner Adams- Last year he was not able to wrestle at the state finals and with this year being his senior year he could definitely make things interesting.

      Karl's Komments

The 170 class is another class where two front runners have emerged and remained unbeaten through this season. Fort Wayne Carroll's Riley Lefever and Merrillville's Bobby Steveson are on a collision course. The bracket gods were kind to the fans of Indiana and this match up, if it happens, will be under the spot light. Steveson's local rival Scottie Sopko of Hobart and Lefever's opponent at sectional, regional and semi-state, Anthony Linnear of Fort Wayne North Side will look to finally topple their rivals. Others looking to advance deep into the bracket are super frosh Conner Galvin of Bloomington South and veteran Austin Neibarger of Hamilton Southeastern.

Best First Round Match Up – Tanner Adams (42-2) 12 Jimtown vs. Austin Neibarger (35-3) 12 Hamilton Southeastern.

Best Quarterfinal Clash – Riley Lefever (43-0) Fort Wayne Carroll vs. Scottie Sopko (39-3) 10 Hobart

Sensational Semifinal Slugfest – Anthony Linnear (32-4) 12 Fort Wayne North Side vs. Bobby Steveson (35-0) 10 Merrillville

      Dingo’s Breakdown

If it’s not Hurford, it’s: Masengale-Perry’s senior is a returning state runner-up and two-time qualifier. He’s had just a couple of lapses this season, but is capable of beating Hurford or anyone else at the weight.

Darkhorse(s): Busse-The returning 7th place finisher owns a win over Thacker and is wrestling at a very high level right now. A potential semis match vs. Masengale should be intense, and Busse could run the table, Thacker-Thacker completes the merry-go-round with Busse and Masengale—he lost to Busse but beat Masengale, and Busse lost to Masengale. Only a junior, Thacker is a pinner and is in the elite level of the weight class.

Upset alert: Jones over #15 Ludwig (Jones has been through a gauntlet of tough opponents, which could serve him well in this opening match), Riley over Busse (Tough Friday night match for both wrestlers, but especially for Riley, who should be ranked…he is no joke), #4 Zorniger over Hurford (state-ranked #4 has the misfortune of drawing state favorite Hurford…or is it Hurford who is unfortunate?), #12 Pfister over Wagner (common opponent Katrell Moss…both lost close matches), Jankowski over #18 Chambers (overlooked Jankowski was a strong second at Merrillville semi-state and looks to keep it rolling over the Edgewood junior)

      Inside Y2’s Mind
Why: At 182lbs you are looking at a two horse race right now between the returning state runner-up at 170lbs and the returning 5th place finisher in this weight. Masengale has had a couple hiccups this year, but is battle tested throughout the season. Hurford has been rarely tested this year which could be a factor later into the day on Saturday. Dakota Thacker is also one to watch as he owns a win over Masengale and will look to avenge a Friday night loss to Hurford from last year.

      Bracket Busters:

Ryan Jankowski- He has flown under the radar all season long and has had a very strong tournament series.

Brad Busse- As with Mater Dei, Bellmont has a tradition of pulling upsets. With this being their only state qualifier look for their coaching staff to have him primed for a spot under the lights.

      Karl's Komments

Perry Meridian's Jake Masengale wrestled under the lights last year and lost a narrow decision to Sean Mappes of Center Grove. He overcame a hiccup at regional to top the field at New Castle. On the other side of the bracket looms Culver Community's unbeaten Matt Hurford. Hurford must survive a brutal quarter bracket that includes Avon's Jonah Zorniger and Warren Central's Katrell Moss. Bloomington South's Dakota Thacker and Bellmont's Brad Busse also are in this class and both have experience at Banker's Life.

Best First Round Match Up – Brian Wagner (38-5) 11 New Palestine vs. Ben Pfister (39-5) 12 Adams Central

      Dingo’s Breakdown

If it’s not Sliga, it’s: Fiddler-It’s just not going to happen. Sliga is a mortal lock.

Darkhorse(s): Nickell-The Roncalli senior has a nasty streak. He looks a little smaller than some of his opponents, but he is very quick and aggressive. Wrestling a tough slate of opponents, he had some huge wins this season. He looked a little nicked up at semi-state, so his health could be an issue.

Upset alert: #9 Ross over Allen (This is a slightly unusual situation, as Ross is a semi-state champ ranked lower than semi-state fourth place finisher Allen. The returning state qualifier Allen has wrestled a pretty tough schedule), Salkill over #17 Webster (This would be a very minor upset—in reality, this is probably a pick’em), #5 Perdue over Fiddler (#5 vs. #2 in an opening round match! Perdue had a rough semi-state, but he is extremely dangerous and could pull the upset over the returning state placer), #20 Patterson over Garringer (#20 advanced out of a wacky Merrillville semi-state and could spring a surprise for #4 Garringer, who was upset at semi-state), Ricks over Nickell (potential semifinal match, they met earlier this year, with Nickell winning 4-2)

      Inside Y2’s Mind

Why: Sliga, Sliga and more Sliga, that will be the tune at 195lbs this year. As with Micic at 113, he is about as close to a lock as you will get this year. He will have to fend off foes from every angle, but this future Northwestern Wildcat will be ready. Look for the top bracket to be highly competitive with Joseph Ross, Jacob Ricks and Kalob Salkill all coming in with only one loss.

      Bracket Busters:

Kalob Salkill- He is a relative unknown that comes in with only one blemish on his record.

Clayton Fiddler- He is a well coached athlete that will be one that can give Sliga a good run in the semi-finals.

Jaylin Allen- Last year he was injured the week of state, if he is healthy he could make a run as a four seed.

      Karl's Komments

What more can be said about My man Mitch Sliga. Sliga has finished 3rd twice at the 189 pound weight class and was champion last year at 195. Rarely has Indiana seen such a skilled takedown artist at this high a weight class. Chasing Sliga for a chance at history will be Roncalli's Mason Nickell, Benton Central's manimal Jacob Ricks, and Bloomington South's talented Clayton Fiddler.

Best First Round Match Up – Joe Ross (36-1) 12 Northfield vs. Jaylin Allen (42-7) 12 South Bend Clay

      Dingo’s Breakdown

If it’s not Robinson, it’s: Hernandez-Warren Central’s battle-tested junior has been elite the entire season, and avenged a regionals loss by winning semi-state in impressive fashion, Miller-You can’t do much better than 47-0, and Miller won a semi-state title over a solid field, Boehm-The returning 8th place finisher is ranked 2nd in the state, but suffered a setback at semi-state. He is lurking in the weeds. However, realistically, Robinson has been a cut above all year and is a prohibitive favorite.

Darkhorse(s): Tolley-The Franklin Community junior has had some fairly impressive national freestyle results and won a very deep and tough semi-state. He may be peaking, meaning he could make a run to the final match under the lights, Jones-The returning 6th place finisher has only one loss all year, which he received at semi-state. Three of the top 6 in the state are from the Evansville semi-state.

Upset alert: #17 Nicodemus over Jones (The Churubusco senior is a returning state qualifier and suffered his only loss all season at semi-state)

      Inside Y2’s Mind

Why: The talk of this weight class all year long has been this fella they call Gelen. As a freshman he had hype as his dad was an NBA All-Star and yet he choose to wrestle in high school. He is the favorite, but the 220(former 215) weight class you always have a few wrestlers that take everyone by surprise. Look no further than the mighty Conner Tolley of Franklin. This spring and summer he went on a tear claiming All-American honors five times. You also have some very tough wrestlers in Dylan Jones, Fletcher Miller and Jared Boehm that can make things interesting in this weight class.

      Bracket Busters:

Jared Boehm- He placed 8th last year at this weight and with that experience he could make quite a splash this weekend.

Dylan Jones- He placed 5th at 195lbs last season. With the move in weight he only has one loss on the year. His quarter-final match with Robinson is one to watch.

Fletcher Miller- This Wildkat comes in with an unblemished record and a big question mark of how good he really is. We will find out this weekend.

      Karl's Komments

The Big Chief from Lake Central is a clear favorite at 220. If Gelen Robinson had not lost a controversial decision in the semifinals last year, we might be looking at a back-to-back champion. Franklin's big Conner Tolley surprised some bigger names to take the semi-state crown in Evansville.

Warren Central's Max Hernandez and Kokomo's Fletcher Miller are in the bracket as semi-state champs. Avon's Dylan Jones placed sixth last year but got the unfortunate draw of being in Robinson's quarter bracket. Heritage Hills' big man, Jared Boehm, also returns to Banker's Life, looking to improve on last years eighth place finish.

Best First Round Match Up – Jason Nicodemus (28-1) 12 Churubusco vs. Dylan Jones (34-1) 12 Avon

Best Quarterfinal Clash – Max Hernandez (37-1) 11 Warren Central vs. Jared Boehm (47-1) 12 Heritage Hills

      Dingo’s Breakdown

If it’s not Winfield, it’s: Bernard-Flip a coin between the two nationally ranked heavies. They are incredibly closely matched, and have faced each other many times. It would be very fitting for their final matchup to take place under the lights. This could be the closest, best final match of them all, if it shakes out.

Darkhorse(s): Hemmelgarn-The returning 3rd place finisher pinned Winfield on Friday night last year. He is a big boy and is also nationally ranked in some publications. He could improve his placement with a big semifinal win over Winfield, Streck-The Merrillville big fella is only a freshman, and this should be the first of several successful weekends in Indianapolis.

Upset alert: #12 Ponder over Winfield (Center Grove’s returning state qualifier is pretty nimble for a man of his size. He has been able to hang with some of the state’s best big men), Ramey over #13 Little (Ramey has impressed during his postseason run. He advanced out of a semi-state that sent the #3, #10 and #16 heavies home), #7 Jolley-Little over Bernard (Jolley-Little has had some national success, in addition to the impressive junior season he had this year), #20 DeMuyt over Carr (Carr is a little erratic; very dangerous when he’s on, a little vulnerable when he’s not), Streck over Winfield (potential quarterfinals match, can the man-child pull a Dexter Larimore and make a strong run as a youngster?), Hemmelgarn over Winfield (potential semifinals match, can lightning strike twice? Everyone wants to take down the Fargo Freestyle runner-up), Carr over Bernard (potential quarterfinals match, Bernard is a tough, skilled heavy, but strange things happen with the big boys)

      Inside Y2’s Mind

Why: The big boys will round out the wrestling on Saturday night and they might just save the fireworks for them. The rivalry between Wesley Bernard and Donte Winfield is going strong with Bernard holding a 2-1 advantage this season. Will Winfield be able to even it out and get the most important win? Winfield will not have an easy go as he could face Eric Hemmelgarn in the semi-finals who took him out last year on Friday night. Bernard will be pushed by Shakir Carr and Stormin’ Norman Oglesby in his half of the bracket.

      Bracket Busters:

Norman Oglesby- This super sophomore shocked the Evansville semi-state by capturing the title last week. He looks to continue on his hot streak and break your bracket this week.

Matt Beard- Not many people even know where Eastside is and this young lad could just pull a couple upsets this weekend.

Shakir Carr- He has the tools to go toe to toe with any heavyweight in the state. Don’t be shocked if he makes a deep run on Saturday.

      Karl's Komments

The Big Show at 285 has most prognosticators anticipating a match up between Perry Meridian's Donte Winfield and Cathedral's Wesley Bernard. The 285 class, however, is one of the most difficult to predict as most matches are tight, low scoring battles. Winfield will have to get by Merrillville's talented freshman, Shawn Streck in the quarterfinals and Bernard will most likely have a tough go with South Bend Clay's behemoth, Shakir Carr. Last year's third place medalist, Eric Hemmelgarn, who beat Winfield Friday night a year ago, awaits in the semis for Winfield. Bernard will possibly have to deal with Ben Davis upstart, Norman Oglesby, to reach the finals.

Best First Round Match Up – Josh Bartoszek (40-4) 12 Hanover Central vs. Matt Beard (41-1) 12 Eastside

Best Quarterfinal Clash – Wesley Bernard (45-1) 11 Cathedral vs. Shakir Carr (44-3) 12 South Bend Clay

2024 IndianaMat Messageboad Hall of Fame Inductees

The first annual IndianaMat MessageBoard Hall of Fame class has been announced. Since this Hall of Fame is run by crooked media members we modified the rules right before the announcement. We are inducting three people posthumously and four via the vote-in process. Don’t be surprised if we change the rules again next year. Before we get into the inductees here are some of the general guidelines we have for this honor.
      1. No admins or staff
      2. Can only go in under ONE name
      3. Been an active member for 5 years
      4. Innovative and fun
      5. All in fun

We start the inductees with three people who left an impact on the board and have unfortunately passed away. The first one is grecoref aka Tom Clark. He came to Indiana from his native Ohio and became a full blown Hoosier. On the mat he was a very accomplished referee making his way to the state finals and also to a little tournament called the Olympics. On the board he was known to provide valuable information, sarcasm, wit, and humor. He was a friend to all and a great personality to have on the board.

Our second inductee is The Ancient Elder aka Dick Neal. Mr. Neal was likely the greatest Indiana wrestling historian ever. In the days of paper brackets and snail mail, he acquired everything he could possibly get his hands on to incorporate into his Indiana wrestling book. On the board he always answered the historical questions and reminded us of the best wrestlers and matches of the years gone by.

The last one to be inducted posthumously is Perseverance aka Eric Allred. Allred has a great story of overcoming adversity and making his life right. He was a huge fan of his son Silas and very knowledgeable about the sport and the kids Silas wrestled with. His passion for the sport and supporting others is very much missed.

The currently active members are characters to say the least and have had a fun and important impact on our lively messageboard. It is only fitting that MattyB and Team Garcia are inducted at the same time. Both came on the board at the same time to wreak havoc and promote #TheCounty and mainly the “young guns” of Avon. They have continued to this day due to having sons still involved in wrestling or in the case of Garcia, just loving to stir the pot.

The steel factory in da region kept RegionRat1 off the board for a few years, but he made a comeback this season. While he has stayed relatively anonymous he always loves to promote da region in his very unique regioneese. Most outside of da region likely believe the way he types is how they speak there, and they aren’t wrong.

Last, but not least is the lightning rod they call General Heavy Handz. Of the current inductees he leads the league in most “vacations” from IndianaMat. Luckily for him, Mike talks Joe into letting him come back EVERY SINGLE TIME! He is never shy about promoting the SAC and his beloved Snider Panthers.

Beyond the Mat: Wrestling a Lifetime Passion for Tsirtsis

      By Mike Zoller, NUSports.com

EVANSTON, Ill. — In the Tsirtsis family you’re born with wrestling headgear. Northwestern wrestler Jason Tsirtsis added onto his family’s wrestling legacy by not only winning an NCAA Championship this year, but also becoming the first freshman Wildcat to win a title.

With a family full of decorated wrestlers, Tsirtsis followed suit winning four straight Indiana high school championships at Crown Point High School and was named the 2012 InterMat High School Wrestler of the Year.

Tsirtsis had the benefit of being guided by his older brother Alex, who himself had been a four-time high school state champion never losing once in those four years compiling a record of 236-0.

“He’s been an influence ever since I began wrestling,” Tsirtsis said. “But I’d say the biggest time frame of him helping was after his career in college. He came home after college and he was involved all the time with me. He knows my wrestling better than anyone. He’s able to watch me and critique me better than anyone.”
With the Tsirtsis name and a laundry list of awards and championships the recruiting process was intense. It came down to Oklahoma State and Northwestern. Tsirtsis saw pros and cons to both programs but in the end he chose Northwestern not only because it was closer to home, but he saw the program on the rise and wanted to be part of something special.

“Oklahoma State has the richest wrestling history ever in the NCAA,” Tsirtsis said. “But Oklahoma State is 14 hours away and NU is only an hour. Having that hometown support is really crucial. Big Ten wrestling is the best in the country and we’re an up-and-coming program. We’re not a powerhouse or the best yet but we’re on our way.”

Head coach Drew Pariano called his recruiting battle with Oklahoma State the toughest he had ever faced.

“They (Oklahoma State) won 34 team national titles,” he said. “It’s a compliment that we were recruiting against them. The best guys are going to choose wrestling powers and it’s an added bonus that we have a great academic program here.”

Tsirtsis wrestled unattached during his first year in Evanston, which allowed him to develop without burning a year of eligibility.

During that first year Tsirtsis wrestled most of the time in the 141 lbs. weight class but felt more comfortable at 149 lbs. and made the decision to keep the weight rather than constantly battle to lose it.

“I could have made 141 if I reshaped my body and dieted,” he said. “At that point you’re not focused on wrestling, you’re focused on cutting weight. You’re not in the right mindset. That unattached year made me realize I had to move up a weight class and get a little bit bigger.”

By any measure Tsirtsis had a successful and productive year wrestling unattached. He went 18-3 and won three tournaments, while placing eighth at the 50th annual Midlands Championships. He also wrestled at the Junior World Team Trials and represented the U.S. at the Junior World Championships in Bulgaria.

Coming back to Evanston to begin his first real season of collegiate wrestling Pariano knew Tsirtsis could be capable of big things.

“Before he even started I was telling people he was going to be a four-time national champ,” Pariano said. “I don’t do that too much – if ever. I don’t know if I’ve ever done that. If I say something like that it probably comes from pretty deep within.”

Junior heavyweight Mike McMullan noticed Tsirtsis’ talent from the start. As a team leader he watched over the freshman but didn’t mentor him in the traditional way.

“Jason’s a unique kid,” McMullan said. “He doesn’t need the same guidance that other younger kids need. He knows what he is capable of. Being someone who shares similar aspirations, we can relate to one another and talk about our goals and our vision for how matches should go.”

It wasn’t a smooth start for Tsirtsis. After some early success he suffered three losses in a span of two weeks. He turned those losses into positives, and they would wind up as his only three losses of the entire 2013-14 season

“We watched and evaluated those matches,” assistant coach Jay Borschel said. “We saw some things where he didn’t control the match. He didn’t control the hand fighting. The other guy pushed him around and controlled him.”

“He needed to change his workout regimen and probably get a little better sleep,” Pariano said. “I don’t think it was necessarily a wake-up call but it was definitely a message that, ‘Hey if I want to win a national title I need to do ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’’ and he did.”

It’s not uncommon for a young wrestler to stumble during the middle of the year. McMullan said one of the hardest things to adjust to is the full grind of how long the NCAA season lasts.

“The one thing a lot of people find out from that redshirt year is that they don’t realize the length of the season,” McMullan said. “When you’re actually in the lineup you’re competing week in and week out. He made the adjustments and remembered his capabilities. He had a little hiccup in the middle and ended on a pretty long win streak.”

Tsirtsis wouldn’t lose again. He notched individual victories over wrestlers from No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 Iowa earning him a No. 3 seed in the 2014 Big Ten Tournament. On the way to the Big Ten Championship, Tsirtsis knocked off the two wrestlers seeded above him, and following the tournament he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Despite being the Big Ten Champion at 149lbs, Tsirtsis entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 5 seed. Something that didn’t sit right with Pariano.

“I was not happy with the draw,” Pariano said. “To win the Big Ten Tournament you have to be an absolute stud. But he (Tsirtsis) had a really good perspective on it saying ‘I have to beat everyone anyways so I might as well beat them early.’”

In the quarterfinals Tsirtsis defeated the reigning NCAA champion at 141 lbs. only to follow that up with a victory over the No. 1 seed in the semifinals. In the semis Tsirtsis had just nine seconds to escape his opponent’s hold – he got out with one second remaining.

“It was an intensity-filled nine seconds,” he said. “Probably the most intense nine seconds I’ve had in my life.”

It was also the match that would provide the timeless image of the tournament as Pariano hoisted a bloodied Tsirtsis up into the air just after his victory.

“I didn’t know he was bleeding,” Pariano said. “Back in the hall I was like, ‘You’re bleeding?’ They stitched him up right there – three stitches.”

After notching All-American status with a win in the semifinal match, Tsirtsis went into the final match and, true to his “Cardiac Cat” style tournament, took down the No. 11 seed in overtime to become the NCAA Champion.

“After I won it was like I hadn’t even won” Tsirtsis said. “It was overwhelming. As a kid you want to be an NCAA champ. To finally have the opportunity to reach that goal and succeed so quickly in my career is pretty surreal and hard to explain.”

Alex embraced Tsirtsis after the match. While he had been a highly touted recruit out of high school, he had never finished better than seventh at the NCAA Championships.

“I saw him after I got my award and gave him a big hug,” Jason said. “It was real emotional. It was a great moment.”

Tsirtsis is now focused on the offseason where he will wrestle in a few tournaments before returning to Evanston for the 2014-15 season. As the returning champ he’s preparing to be the wrestler to beat.

“People are going to come after him harder now than ever before,” Pariano said. “In wrestling its such a one-on-one sport that he’s going to have to be ready for every single match. The Big Ten isn’t going to get any easier. The (149 lbs.) weight class is going to remain one of the best in the country.”

Besides being the champion, Tsirtsis will also be looked to as a leader when the season starts. The Wildcats boast the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation and they will look to him for guidance.

“I’m more of a vocal guy than most,” Tsirtsis said. “I like to express what I think and see. I’ll make sure I’m on those guys. I want to make sure I’m encouraging them too. I need to make sure they are training hard and are on the right track. I also need to make sure I lead by example.”

For next year the goal is simple for Tsirtsis – repeat. But he’s going to make sure he enjoys his time as well.

“I just need to keep getting better, but also having fun. That’s going to make the goal (of repeating) a little less stressful and a little more entertaining and enjoyable.”

      Genius Ratings Version 2.0

Computer Ratings for every Indiana High School wrestling team

--presented by Maligned on behalf of Indianamat.com

      What are “Genius Ratings”?

Indianamat.com’s “Genius Ratings” are comprehensive computer ratings based on every match result presented in the results section of Indianamat.com’s discussion page, plus many other results gleaned from websites and coaches’ sources. Even matches with out-of-state teams were considered when that team wrestled at least two Indiana opponents.

      Two Ratings

The “Genius Ratings” are made up of two separate ratings designed to serve two distinctly different purposes. One rating is called POTENTIAL and uses match scores only to rate all teams, disregarding wins and losses. The other rating is called REWARD and uses only wins and losses data, not considering scores at all.

      POTENTIAL

POTENTIAL is specifically designed to be the best possible predictor of future results. It was designed 5 years ago by Maligned and is virtually identical to rating systems currently being incorporated Jeff Sagarin at USA Today, Joe Lunardi at ESPN, baseball analyst Bill James, top Las Vegas odds-makers, and others. This system locks in a team’s true potential by measuring its score differential within the context of its schedule, considering a team’s context to the 100th degree of separation from other teams, if necessary. The difference in rating between your team and another is the expected point differential in a dual meet. Multiply the difference in rating by three to arrive at the expected differential in a full-team individual tournament event. The predictive effect is most useful for teams within about 40 points of each other. (The top teams and bottom teams are separated by impossibly large margins because a top team can beat a good team by 40, which can beat a mid-level team by 40, which can beat a bottom team by 40).

      REWARD

The rating entitled “REWARD” is a more politically correct ranking, designed to slot teams according to only their wins and losses within the context of their schedule. No score results are involved with this ranking at all. Again, teams are measured against others as far away as the 100th degree of separation or beyond if necessary. This ranking is ideologically similar to most of the computer ranking systems currently being used by the BCS in college football. About 5% more results were used for this than for POTENTIAL for various reasons (post-football issues, lack of score information, etc.)

      Duals AND Tournament Results Used

All possible results were used for these rankings, including individual tournaments. Analysis shows that in full-team, regular season events, final scores of tournaments are great predictors of which teams would defeat which other teams in dual meets. POTENTIAL considers all score differentials between your team and others at all individual tournaments and divides them by 3. In other words, if Team A defeats Team B by 15 points in a tournament, the score differential is recorded as +5 for Team A, not +15. A win or a loss for finishing ahead or behind a particular opponent at an individual tournament was also incorporated into the REWARD rating. Finally, all individual tournament results are only weighted as being 50% as important as dual meets (except 32-team events, which weight 40% only). For example, you would have to beat a team twice in an individual tournament to receive the same rating benefit as beating them in a dual meet.

Example: Team A finishes 3rd place out of 8 teams in an event and +102 in score against all 7 opponents. Team A’s record is listed as 5-2 against these seven opponents and its POTENTIAL point differential is listed as +34 for these seven separate competitions. Again, all results are then only 50% as important as duals.

      Strength of Schedule

The Strength of Schedule (SOS) component listed here is only as accurate and complete as the information we had available. Some SOS ratings are based on 5 or fewer matches for a team. Especially for some of the very small schools at the bottom of the ratings, the SOS rating can be almost completely disregarded.

The Future of the “Genius Ratings”

Indianamat.com plans to update the “Genius Ratings” at least every other week from here on out, sooner if possible.

Letter from IHSWCA President Cale Hoover

      April 22, 2009

      IHSWCA Members:

With great pleasure I assume the duties of president of our organization.  I would like to thank those office holders who have come before me.  I would like to thank Barry Humble of New Haven, for giving 2 years of service to the wrestling community.  I have learned a tremendous amount from those who have served before me, and I will lean on them heavily during the next two years.

The sport of wrestling has taken me on an amazing journey, which provides me with a somewhat unique vantage point.  I grew up in Albion, IN and attended Central Noble High School graduating in 1996.  Central Noble is a true small school, around 400 students most years.  The largest team at Central Noble during my four years their finished with 9 wrestlers.  I continued my education and wrestling career at Purdue University.  My wrestling career lasted about 2 years at Purdue before I decided to move on.  I graduated with a degree in Social Studies Education in 2001.

During my coaching career I’ve been fortunate to develop from several experiences.  I served as an assistant wrestling coach at Highland HS in Anderson, IN for 3 years and also coached freshman football for 2 years.  Highland was a great place to start, and I am grateful for having working with coaches Cary House and Kyle Poyer.  Hamilton Southeastern gave me my first head coaching opportunity in 2004, and I moved on to Center Grove in 2006.  I was asked to serve on the ISWA board in 2003 and have served as Cadet Director and now Junior Director.  I obviously have worked at some of the largest schools in the state, but I can tell you I have not lost the perspective that was gained from my days at Central Noble.

Two goals stand out to me at this time.  The first is to build our membership.  We all need to work at getting every wrestling coach in the state, high school, middle school, retired, etc. to join the association.  Increased numbers will make our organization stronger and give us more pull with the IHSAA.  Second, we must improve our communication.  One of our challenges is communicating with our lay coaches.  We have a high percentage of lay coaches in our sport, who do a great job, but who often do not receive items sent through the mail.  Also, not everyone frequently visits the association website.  We must utilize all available communication means which includes standard mail, email, and the IHSWCA website.

Our association has some important decisions to make in the next year.  We must decide what areas we want to focus on for our presentation in 2011.  The most talked about topics appear to be wrestle backs and class wrestling.  I can honestly tell you that we are not close to having either.  Wrestlebacks are more likely to pass, but at this point the odds are looking long against us.  Class wrestling greatly divides our wrestling community and we lack the consensus needed to move forward to the IHSAA.  In addition, the IHSAA commissioners have made it very clear that they are not in favor of expanding class sports at this time.  Despite this stance, I do believe a discussion on the topic has merit.  I believe the time is right for a survey in the next year to gather the perspective of the membership.

I have concerns about the current state of the organization.  Our 2009 election saw only 118 votes cast – or 33% turnout.  This has to improve if we are to have legitimacy in the eyes of the IHSAA.  Complaints have been made about the nomination process and also about current implementation of Regional Reps.  I can promise you that the nomination process at the Fall Clinic was done correctly and fairly.  Also, the Regional Rep idea was created to give members the opportunity to participate; however, much like our recent election, participation numbers remain low.

I look forward to serving as the association president.  Please contact me with questions, concerns, or ideas.  I want to begin better communication among us by expressing my belief that this position comes with an open-door policy.  With your help we can continue to improve our great sport in the state of Indiana.

      Sincerely,

Calumet College of St. Joseph Announces First Class

First year head coach Leroy Vega has announced the wrestlers that will be the first to grace the mats at Calumet College of St. Joseph. The Crimson Wave bring in 25 wrestlers to start the program off. Vega not only brought in freshmen, but numerous transfers that will add some immediate college experience to the line-up.  Leading the way is NCAA qualifier Dan Bedoy. Bedoy qualified for nationals with Purdue in 2006 and will come with one year of eligibility left. He will definitely make an immediate impact on the NAIA this season.  Other key transfers include former state runner-up Andy St. Germain who comes from Harper Junior College and Chad Allen who originally started out at Portage, but won a state championship in North Carolina before wrestling for Manchester last year.  Dave Ballentine, a fourth place finisher for Mishawaka in 2008, comes to CCSJ via King College to challenge for the 197lbs spot. Another top recruit is Bloomington South's Chris Head. Head placed 6th in the state as a freshman and was also a Junior Freestyle All-American in 2008. Former Merrillville state runner-up Eric Oria was a late addition to the team and the coaches look for him to make a solid contribution to the team right away.

Coach Vega has assembled a great base for the future of the Crimson Wave this year. Their schedule includes duals with Manchester, Indianapolis, and Wabash while they are also in numerous tournaments such as the Michigan State Open, Little States and the Midwest Classic. If you want to come watch the Crimson Wave they will be traveling the state and will most likely be in your area this year as they will not have a home meet this season.

Only 13 Juniors are taking the mat in Greco-Roman this year for Team Indiana. They do however have two returning Greco-Roman All-Americans and another two-time state placer with the potential to be on the podium. Greco specialist Sage Coy will look to make the podium for the third straight time after finishing 6th and 8th as a Cadet. He has been superb in Greco over the years and will be a favorite to wrestle deep into the tournament. Randy Scott had a breakout performance last year making the podium in both freestyle and Greco. He made the finals in Greco and finished 8th in freestyle. After a 3rd place finish at state this season look for his hot streak to continue. Garrett Pepple will be making his first trip to Fargo after two state runner-up finishes. He has also made the podium three times at USAW Folkstyle Nationals. This will be his first Greco tournament since capturing an ISWA title in 2012.

      Rochester Regional Preview

As north central Indiana braces for this year's “storm of the centuryâ€, 112 wrestlers will be preparing for Saturday's regional tournament at Rochester High School. The weather may play havoc with the practices but all the schools will be dealing with the same issues. The Penn Kingsmen are the big story as they qualified all 14 wrestlers to regional and stand a good chance of qualifying all 14 to next weeks's semistate.

The heavyweight class is the deepest with three wrestlers ranked in the state's top seven. (Plymouth's Damon Howe, Bremen's Abe Hall, and Culver Community's Jeremiah Harvey). These three, along with the five other talented underclassmen in the bracket, will make watching the big boys entertaining throughout the day.

Another reason to focus on the Rochester regional will be to follow the return of Penn's Sara Hildebrandt and the undefeated march of Culver Military's Kayla Miracle. Both of these young ladies would like to be the first female to qualify for state.

      103

Culver Military's thirteenth ranked freshman Kayla Miracle handled the spotlight (literally and figuratively) in the sectional finals last week at Plymouth. Despite giving up some early points, she did not panic and methodically put points on the board to win 11-4. Mishawaka's junior Scott Fozo comes in as a sectional champ and is battle hardened. Penn's promising freshman, Zach Davis is also worth keeping an eye on.

Best 1st round Match: Darnell Johnson (South Bend Washington) vs. Greg Newman (Wawasee)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Fozo – Mishawaka
      Davis – Penn
      Miracle – CMA
      Greg Newman – Wawasee
      112

A rematch of the Al Smith Invitational is highly likely here as the long and lanky Sam Ferdig of South Bend Adams looks to get another shot at Warsaw's Jarred Brooks. The 13th ranked Ferdig is likely studying the tape intently in order to find a way to stop the high energy Brooks, who ended the regular season ranked 4th in the state. Brooks only loss is by DQ to a Michigan wrestler.

Best 1st round match – Sarah Hildebrandt (Penn) vs. Zech Weese (Rochester)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Brooks – Warsaw
      Ferdig – South Bend Adams
      Grant Martsoff – Mishawaka
      Zech Weese – Rochester
      119

The Plymouth sectional gets a chance to flex a little muscle at 119. Plymouth runner-up and third ranked Anthony McHugh will look to rebound from his first loss of the season. The transfer from suburban Columbus, OH was a state qualifier in Ohio Division II last year. Former state qualifier Garth Simpson of Rochester was the author of the upset. These two are the clear favorites to meet in a rematch.

Best first round Match: Mitch Emmons(Mishawaka) vs. Anthony McHugh (CMA)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      McHugh – CMA
      Simpson – Rochester
      Jacob Davis – Penn
Garrett Glueckert – South Bend Clay
      125

The Mishawaka sectional comes roaring back at 125 and they are favored to take all four tickets to Merrillville. Third ranked Layten Binion of Mishawaka is one of the most entertaining wrestlers in the state to watch. His conference and sectional rival is 11th ranked Tyler Chapple of Penn. Chapple is a considerable talent in his own right and can hit throws from all angles.

Best first round match: William Howell-Bey(SB Washington) vs. Carlos Salinas(CMA)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Binion – Mishawaka
      Chapple – Penn
      Ullery – South Bend Riley
      Howell-Bey – South Bend Riley
      130

The northern boys continue to roll at 130 as they again look to be favorites in all the opening round matches. An almost unnoticed result from Mishawaka was South Bend Clay's sophomore Mitch Hartman finding the answer to Mishawaka's fourth ranked Taylor Wisler. These two along with Penn's Trevor Manspeaker are very close and it wouldn't be surprising if any of the three win a regional title. All three also have legitimate shots at qualifying for state regardless of where they place but going into semi-state as a regional champ will make the quest for Conseco considerably easier.

Best first round match: Josh Juarez (SB Riley) vs. Seth Fincher (Tippecanoe Valley)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Wisler – Mishawaka
      Hartman – SB Clay
      Manspeaker – Penn
      Juarez – SB Riley
      135

One of the few “sure things†at Rochester is that Penn's undefeated senior and fourth ranked Alex Gregory will be at the top of the podium on Saturday afternoon. Gregory has been dominant this year and should cruise to a regional title. Mishawaka's freshman Tristan Macri will likely get a rematch with his Penn rival in the finals.

Best first round match: Cliff McLeod (SB Riley) vs. Ian Randolph (Culver Community)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Gregory – Penn
      Macri – Mishawaka
      McLeod – SB Riley
      Austin Nelson – Tippecanoe Valley
      140

The 140 class is the first class at Rochester that does not contain a ranked wrestler. Penn's sectional champion Dan Ginter has put together a fine 34-7 record and is a slight favorite over Riley's senior Joe Roland. Ginter edged Roland 6-4 in last weeks finals.

Best first round match: Kyle Jones (Mishawaka) vs. Justin Corl (Bremen)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Ginter – Penn
      Roland – SB Riley
      Luther Jacobs – CMA
      Corl – Bremen
      145

The four horsemen of the Mishawaka sectional make a repeat appearance in Rochester. These four closely matched foes include the sixth ranked Laquan Lunford of South Bend Clay and eleventh ranked Grant Anglemyer of Penn. The lofty ranking will not intimidate Mishawaka's Sidney Logan or SB Riley's Brandon Reynolds-Smith. Any of the four could win this on any given day.

Best first round match: Logan (Mishawaka) vs. Trent Bauters (Tippecanoe Valley)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Lunford – SB Clay
      Anglemyer – Penn
      Logan – Mishawaka
      Reynolds-Smith – SB Riley
      152

Eight closely bunched wrestlers are in the 152 bracket and that should make this weight class one of the more exciting to watch on Saturday. Three of the four first round matches should be doozies. The headliner of the first round is surely Mishawaka's fifteenth ranked Darius Marshall versus Rochester's tough Jacob Schroder. Marshall pinned Schroder in the semis at Al Smith but rumor has it that Marshall might be a little dinged up. The winner will likely face Riley's Kelly Kolat who seems to be peaking at the right time. The bottom of the bracket includes Penn's Mike Hummer and Tippecanoe Valley's Isaac Yoder.

Best first round matches: Marshall (Mishawaka) vs. Schroder (Rochester)

Hummer (Penn) vs. Ryan Lindsay (Wawasee)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Schroder – Rochester
      Yoder – Tippecanoe Valley
      Kolat – South Bend Riley
      Hummer – Penn
      160

This class has both good quality and depth provided by the Mishawaka Sectional. Clay's 17th ranked senior Davon Alwine has seemed to separate himself from the field after majoring 20th ranked Carl McLeod of Riley. Alwine sports a fine 35-2 record and has been flying under the radar for much of the year.

Best first round match: Phillip Derrickson (SB Adams) vs. Everardo Ahuatl (Warsaw)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Alwine – SB Clay
      McLeod – SB Riley
      Phillip Treely – Penn
      Derrickson – SB Adams
      171

Another South Bend wrestler that has been flying under the radar is Riley's Nate Coddens. Three losses by injury default at the Al Smith Invite have hurt his state wide notoriety but he is clearly the top dog at the Rochester regional. Warsaw's Zac Erba looks to break the Mishawaka sectional stranglehold on this weight class.

Best first round matches: Tyler Reinoehl (Mishawaka) vs. Nathan Benham (Plymouth)
Erba (Warsaw) vs. Zach Johnson (SB Clay)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Coddens – SB Riley
      David Stevens – Penn
      Reinoehl – Mishawaka
      Erba – Warsaw
      189

Two top eight ranked 189 pounders, Warsaw's eighth ranked Ross Hoover and Culver Community's 5th ranked Matt Hurford headline this bracket and favored to meet for the second Saturday in row. Hurford nipped Hoover 8-6 in a hard fought battle. Penn's Mike Hamm was the suprise winner of the Mishawaka sectional and appears to be peaking at the right time.

Best first round match: Alex Skipper (SB Adams) vs. Lance Wright (Wawasee)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Hurford – Culver Community
      Hoover – Warsaw
      Skipper – SB Adams
      Hamm – Penn
      215

Two more ranked individuals and a couple of others good enough to push the big names highlight the 215 bracket. South Bend Clay's Joe Gallegos is ranked 5th in the state and owns a convincing win over ninth ranked Devin Reagan of Penn. These two junior will likely battle again on Saturday afternoon. Both of these studs will be working hard for the win because the loser could draw in to fourth ranked Tyler Kral at semi state.

Best first round match: Robert Deering (Mishawaka Marian) vs. Jacob Seagraves (Plymouth)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Gallegos – SB Caly
      Reagan – Penn
      Alan Bollenbacher – Bremen
      Deering – Mishawaka Marian
      285

The big boys represent the deepest field of any weight class at Rochester. Damon Howe is the clear favorite and owns victories over most of the field. The battle for the other three tickets to Merrillville will be well earned.

Best first round match: Kade Maggert (Penn) vs. Dmitri Kaplanis (Wawasee)

      Not Packing a Cooler

      Howe – Plymouth
      Hall – Bremen
      Harvey – Culver Community
      Maggert - Penn
