      Three All-Americans Lead Junior Freestyle

The last day of Fargo brought home three All-Americans in the Junior Freestyle event. Kingsman Drew Hildebrandt led the team with a runner-up performance at 106lbs. Two Fort Wayne Semi-State wrestlers, Garrett Pepple and Fletcher Miller were the other All-Americans.
Hildebrandt started out the morning wrestling in the finals against Arizona’s Daniel Vega. Vega was seeking an elusive Junior Triple Crown. Hildebrandt was close to scoring multiple times on a knee pull single, but was stymied by Vega’s defense. Hildebrandt dropped the match 12-1 to bring home the silver medal.

Kendallville’s finest, Garrett Pepple was on the mat for 7th place at 113lbs. The two-time state runner-up had a very good tournament when you consider his lack of international style experience. He dropped his 7th place match to Dorian Sapien of Idaho 11-1. Pepple’s losses were to the 1st, 5th, and 7th place finishers.

Fletcher Miller was the only returning Junior All-American to make his way back to Fargo this year. He also had an impressive tournament only losing to the champion, 3rd place finisher, and 5th place finisher. As a testament to how tough the tournament is, the defending champion at 220lbs did not even place this year.

Paul Konrath, Chad Red, and Nick Lee Finish on Top

Konrath, Red, and Lee Finish on Top

Friday was a phenomenal day for Indiana wrestling when three champions were crowned in the Cadet Freestyle National Championships. This is only the second time Indiana has had three champions in any age group and style. Back in 1993, Tim Myers, James Leavell, and Chris Snyder captured titles for Indiana. This year’s terrific trio looked solid all tournament long and wrestled amazing throughout the tougher rounds. Along with the champions, Kobe Woods finished as runner-up and Evan Eldred was 7th at 132lbs. With those performances the team placed 5th in the standings.

The afternoon started off with Paul Konrath at 106lbs for Indiana. Konrath had takedowns early and late in the first period to have a 4-0 lead at halftime. With about 30 seconds left Konrath and his opponent, Ian Timmins, traded a 2 and 2 for a 6-2 lead in favor of Konrath. Another late takedown sealed the championship for Konrath and the final score of 8-2. This is his second championship as he won the USAW Folkstyle title in April.

Next up was the always exciting Chad Red. Many had to wonder if there would be a letdown after beating highly touted Taylor Lamont last night. Red had a formidable opponent in Jaden Enriquez of California who was seeking the Triple Crown. Red was warned early for passivity and gave up a point for not scoring during the shot clock in the first period. With neither wrestler really threatening to score, Enriquez was up 1-0 after the first stanza. With just over a minute left Red finally finished a takedown to take a 2-1 lead. Red was immediately back in on the legs and got his second takedown with 35 seconds left in the match. He surrendered a late takedown to make the final score 4-3. Red had a super impressive tournament in one of the highlight weight classes of the event.

It will probably take longer to read the recap of Nick Lee’s finals match than the actual match took. Lee was on fire all tournament long and he didn’t let up in the finals. His opponent was Jamie Hernandez of Illinois who was a surprise finalist. Lee racked up a quick takedown and three turns to make it 7-0 after about 20 seconds of action. Lee then got two more takedowns to secure the tech fall at the 1:16 mark of the first period. Lee had seven tech falls during the tournament in his seven matches. He was also named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament with his performance.

Evan Eldred of Westfield made quick work of Ryan Epps of Minnesota in getting the 11-0 tech fall in the first period. Eldred had an impressive tournament and will be one to watch this winter.

Kobe Woods was the last wrestler for the Cadets to take the mat. He had his summer nemesis Matt Stencel of Ohio to battle in the finals. Woods was down 4-0 in the first period before he tied the match just before halftime. In the second period Stencel ran off 9 straight points to clinch the win. Woods had an impressive run winning USAW Folkstyle Nationals this past April, placing 7th in Greco-Roman, and runner-up in Freestyle.

The Juniors ran into the nitty gritty of wrestling this morning. Matches with podium spots at stake always bring out the best in everyone and the Indiana boys did not disappoint. After the dust had settled three Indiana wrestlers made it to the final morning of wrestling. Drew Hildebrandt will be wrestling for a national title, while Fletcher Miller will be wrestling for 5th, and Garrett Pepple wrestling for 7th.

Hildebrandt started the day off with a big win over Kirk Johansen of Illinois and kept rolling with two more solid wins. In the quarters he defeated Howard Smith of Texas 8-7 and in the semi-finals he took care of New York’s Kelan McKenna 6-3. He is the second Hildebrandt to make the finals this week as his sister Sarah made the World Team Trials final on Monday.

Garrett Pepple took the scenic route to placement after dropping his first match of the day to a tough Jack Mueller. He went on to tech Greco runner-up Corbin Nirschel of Kansas in the consolations to put him in position to place. His blood round match was not easy as he was down by six points in the first period, but came back to beat Tennessee’s Torbio Navarro. He lost his next match to rival Benny Gomez of Michigan and will be wrestling for 7th tomorrow morning.

Fletcher Miller ran into a beast in the quarter-finals in Iowa’s Marcus Harrington. Harrington was a two-time state champ and signed to wrestle for the Iowa State Cylones. Miller didn’t have much time to sulk in his loss as he was back on the mat 15 minutes later wrestling for a spot on the podium. He made quick work of John Jayne to earn his second Fargo placement. Miller went on to defeat Patrick Grayson, but lost to Kentucky stud Austin Meyers in his last match of the day. Miller will wrestle for 5th tomorrow.

Fantastic Four Lead the Cadets on Day Six

The last time Indiana had more three or more wrestlers in the finals of any event at Fargo most of the current wrestlers were entering kindergarten or in pre-school. Back in 2003 Indiana had a terrific trio of Matt Coughlin, Angel Escobedo and Alex Tsirtsis in the finals of Junior Freestyle event. This year Indiana has four in the finals of Cadet Freestyle in Paul Konrath, Chad Red, Nick Lee and Kobe Woods. Also making the podium is Evan Eldred who will wrestle for 7th tomorrow afternoon.

Konrath got the ball rolling with a 1-0 match in the semi-finals. His only point was due to a passivity on his opponent. Even with the lack of scoring the match had quite a few scrambles and each wrestler was in position to score numerous times.

Chad Red had lost to Taylor Lamont three times in the past year. Last year at Fargo Lamont pinned Red in freestyle and as recent as last month Lamont defeated him in both freestyle and Greco. However, today was Red’s day as he used two takedowns in the first period to garner enough to hold off the reigning freestyle national champion.

Nick Lee has been a machine all tournament long and in the semi-finals he rose to the occasion against Eric Hong of Pennsylvania. Hong is a prep national champion and was considered by some to be the favorite in this weight class. Lee’s relentless pressure broke Hong midway through the second period when he got the tech fall.

Kobe Woods isn’t afraid of seeking the best competition as he has had a rigorous schedule since February. It has paid off with his second trip to the national finals. He took care of Michigan’s Wyatt Harden by tech fall late in the match.

Evan Eldred has gone the scenic route to the podium after losing his third match he battled back to win three matches to secure placement. He will have Ryan Epps of Minnesota in his placement match.

The finals match-ups for the Indiana wrestlers will be tough as always. Konrath will have Ian Timmins of Nevada. Timmins is a Nevada state champion and won the Cadet Greco-Roman title just a couple days ago. Red will have Jaden Enriquez of California in the finals. Enriquez is looking for the Triple Crown and placed in both style last year at Fargo. He placed 4th at 132lbs in the California state tournament. Nick Lee will have Jamie Hernandez of Illinois in the finals. There is little info on Hernandez, he did not qualify for state in Illinois and was 2-2 in Greco at the Cadet Duals. Kobe Woods will have a familiar foe in the finals in Ohio’s Matt Stencil. At the Cadet Duals they traded wins with Woods winning in Greco and Stencil in Freestyle. Stencil however won the rubber match earlier this week in Greco.

The Junior Freestyle team got off to a great start on the first day. Six wrestlers are still in the championship bracket. They are currently in the round of 16 and will have to win two more on the championship side to secure placement. Indiana has five still alive in the consolations and they are four matches from placement.
Leading the way are the mighty mites Drew Hildebrandt and Garrett Pepple. Fargo veterans Brandon James, Randy Scott, Fletcher Miller are also in the championship along with Jacob Aven. In the consolations are Anthony Williams, Ben Harvey, Scottie Sopko, Dylan Lydy, and Nick Joyner. Both Harvey and Lydy had tough first round matches and are battling back through the consolations.

13 Cadets Alive After One Day of Freestyle

Indiana had 13 Cadet Freestyle wrestlers alive after the first day of action at Fargo. Leading the way are an impressive seven quarter-finalists. Those wrestlers will have to only win one of their next to matches to secure a spot on the podium. The six wrestlers in the consolations will need to win two or three matches to earn a podium spot. The Mount Vernon Mighty Mouse Paul Konrath has been impressive with two tech falls and a decision at 106lbs. Incoming Mater Dei stud, Joe Lee has three tech falls on the day as does older brother Nick at 120lbs and 132lbs respectively. Sandwiched between the Lee's is Chad Red, who also has spent minimal time on the match with two tech falls and two pins. State runner-up Jacob Covaciu has three tech falls of his own. The Flying Eagle Jacob Gray has had a couple wild matches including a 22-20 win in the round of 16. Lastly, Kobe Woods has won both his matches handily while looking for the double this week.

Others alive in the consolation include: Alec White at 100lbs, Noah Warren and Evan Eldred at 132lbs, Brett Johnson at 138lbs, Brendan Sutton at 285lbs, and Cameron Wetli at 220lbs. Unfortunately both Warren and Eldred will wrestle first thing tomorrow and one of them will be eliminated.

Two of those All-Americans return along with two from last year's Cadet group. Leading the way is three-time Fargo placer Brandon James. He has been money here as he placed 7th in a loaded weight class last year. Before that he placed 6th and 8th as a Cadet. The other returning Junior All-American is Fletcher Miller. He will look to finish his high school career off on Mat 1 this year after taking a 3rd place plaque home to Kokomo last year. Randy Scott and Dylan Lydy will both move up an age group and hope to repeat their performances from 2013. Both had breakout performances at Fargo last year with Lydy placing 4th and Scott finishing 8th.

Others with some national accolades that will look to make their first appearance on the Fargo podium include USAW Folkstyle runner-ups Drew Hildebrandt and Jacob Aven, along with USAW Folkstyle Natonals 3rd place finisher Garrett Pepple. All three will need to navigate the always tough minefield that Fargo presents. State placers Clarence Johnson, Ben Harvey, and Scottie Sopko will all be looking to wrestle deep into the tournament.

Miracle Makes One Last Fargo Podium Appearance

Just as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, Kayla Miracle wrestled another match on Mat #1 at Fargo. The final match did not go her way, but it was not without a valiant effort. She dropped her finals match to Cadet World Champion Teshya Alo of Hawaii. Miracle and Alo have been going back and forth for years and this match was one of the marquee match-ups of the night. As this was Miracle’s last official tournament as a high school athlete she left an imprint on Women’s wrestling the state like no other. She wrestled in six tournaments at Fargo and came away with two firsts, three seconds and a third. She will go on to wrestle at Campbellsville University next year and more than likely continue her winning ways.

Cadet Freestylers take the mat on Wednesday, the first of three days of action for them. This year’s team consists of 12 wrestlers with state experience along with two others sporting solid national credentials. Only one All-American from last year returns, Nick Lee who had an impressive first showing at Fargo placing third. He will be back looking to move up on the podium after finishing third at the state finals and runner-up at the FILA Cadet Nationals this spring. He will bring with him his younger brother Joe who had an impressive Cadet Duals going 6-2 in freestyle and 7-0 in Greco-Roman.

Another tough wrestler to watch is two time undefeated state champion Chad Red. He has all the tools to make a deep run after coming up a hair short last year. Paul Konrath has had a great spring of wrestling and will look to cap it off with a high placement at Fargo. State runner-up Jacob Covaciu will also be in the hunt for a berth on the podium after coming up one match short in Greco-Roman.

Both Kobe Woods and Jacob Cavins have both placed in folkstyle and Greco-Roman and will be looking to cap off their off season with the trifecta in freestyle. Others to watch include state placers: Alec White, Kyle Hatch, Gaige Torres, and Steven Lawrence.

Only 13 Juniors are taking the mat in Greco-Roman this year for Team Indiana. They do however have two returning Greco-Roman All-Americans and another two-time state placer with the potential to be on the podium. Greco specialist Sage Coy will look to make the podium for the third straight time after finishing 6th and 8th as a Cadet. He has been superb in Greco over the years and will be a favorite to wrestle deep into the tournament. Randy Scott had a breakout performance last year making the podium in both freestyle and Greco. He made the finals in Greco and finished 8th in freestyle. After a 3rd place finish at state this season look for his hot streak to continue. Garrett Pepple will be making his first trip to Fargo after two state runner-up finishes. He has also made the podium three times at USAW Folkstyle Nationals. This will be his first Greco tournament since capturing an ISWA title in 2012.

Chad Red coming off another undefeated year in scholastic wrestling will look to improve on his 4th place finish from last year. Also returning is Milan big guy Jacob Cavins after finishing 7th last year. Other top wrestlers that are looking to have a great tournament are state placers Gaige Torres, Steven "Bam" Lawrence, Jacob Covaciu, and Kobe Woods.  All four of those wrestlers placed at USAW Folkstyle Nationals. Kobe Woods will be eligible for the Triple Crown as he won Folkstyle Nationals. State qualifiers Brett Johnson and Austin Laughlin round out the top wrestlers for Team Indiana.

Women's wrestling in Indiana continues to be on the rise and this year is going to be no different at Fargo. Leading the way on this year's team is once again highly decorated Kayla Miracle. She will be performing double duty this weekend trying to earn a spot on the World Team and then later in the week wrestling in the junior championships. Her laundry list of accomplishments are too much to mention, just know that she is extremely talented and will continue to win at a high level. Two other Fargo All-Americans return in Lindsey Prozanski and Courtney Grey. Both were on the podium last year as Cadets and hope to repeat that performance as Juniors. Two other All-Americans in different events will make their Fargo debuts this week. The mighty Baron Susan Fozo will wrestle in the Junior division after placing 8th at Folkstyle Nationals this spring. Lastly, Mackenzie Turner will wrestle both Cadet and Junior divisions after a 3rd place finish at the FILA Cadet championships this spring.
