  1. jlaw1981, you probably think class wrestling is a good thing as well. Apologists? I'm not apologizing for what Metcalf did though the more I read of these goofy responses the more I think Metcalf was right.
  2. Jeesh GrecoISU...you don't get it. It's not about being a Metcalf lover or hater. It's about Caldwell, great wrestler that he is, make himself look like a complete A$$ on the biggest stage in college wrestling. It's about wrestling all 7 minutes and the personal integrity to man up when the time counts rather than taking a fake blow because he's gassed. It's about wrestling until the ref blows the whistle, at least that's what I've heard most coaches say. All the great things he did in that match through periods one and two, and he did what nobody thought could be done, for me anyway, are forgotten for the cowardess and lack of class he showed in the end. Caldwell is one of the best this country has to offer. I think he could have won that match with out faking the injury. He had Metcalf's number. If I remember, he even took Metcalf down after his little break and let's not forget that Metcalf had time to rest and compose himself as well. I think he is one of the most exciting wrestlers in college to watch, as slick and smooth as Angel in a much bigger body. You never know how he is going to come at you. Still, well enough said. As a Hoosier fan, I'm certainly not a Metcalf lover. I respect how he wrestles with intensity for all seven minutes.
  3. You guys must be taking drugs before you write stuff. Here's what probably went down: Caldwell and coach plan it out all ahead of time. Go at Metcalf early and hard. Hit him before he can react. Use up all the gas in the tank in periods one and two. Then stall, stall, stall in period three. If there is trouble and the tank is completely empty, simply call a blow time out. Call it back pain so the ref can't tell if it's for real. Take the head gear off, towel off, grab some water, then reluctantly carry on. Just remember not to ruin the charade by doing one of those patented back flips at the end, but by all means, if the opportunity arises, do some sort of celebration just before time runs out to dis a fellow competitor! The making of a role model!
  4. Jeesh...now that I think about it you're right Drooke. I guess maybe I'm a little turned off by ESPN2 making such a big deal out of the Robles match while Angel was on. I think I even heard Mena screaming in the back ground! ;D
  5. yep...if he gets some offense.
  6. AJ...I need to say I think your dead wrong on this one. I rarely see wrestlers run around doing cartwheels and back flips before time runs out. Especially on the NCAA main stage. What a bunch of B.S. I admit that Metcalf got his butt handed to him and the "injury" time out surely helped Caldwell's cause, still, the guy showed little class for a champion.
  7. No way should Caldwell win the Hodge. Sure, he beat Metcalf, but IMO he took a bogus injury time out just to catch his breath and showed no class with the showboat antics at the end of the match.
  8. Alright, I guess I'll be the jerk here and say that there's something not right about having to wrestle a guy who is always on his knee. Has anyone ever seen a two legged wrestler with a style of dropping to his knees? I don't know. I thought it was a boring match on Friday night or maybe I was just p.o.'d about not getting to watch Angel and Nickerson duke it out.
  9. LOL....Look, hopefully by now, you know I love the Hoosiers as much as all of you. Angel is truly a champion to do what he did this year. The book is still out on Ortega. As far as Hernandez is concerned, I'm not completely convinced that he shouldn't have wrestled 33 again and let Kelly wrestle 41. I thought Wap had a pretty decent year. It seems that some folks may have watched tape of Kinser and figured out how to wrestle him. Still, one of the most intense guys on the squad. Young had a great year though I think it could have been better with a little more gas in the tank. Perry always seemed either hot or cold. Cameron's NCAA bid was a fluke. I predict Powless will be an IU All American next season. Everhart will do much better if the Hoosier's can get a real heavyweight, then move Nate and Matt down a weight. For next year... Angel Ortega Red shirt frosh or maybe Warren? Wap Kinser Young Perry Powless Everhart New Heavy So what happens with Coughlin? I don't know. I'm not really sure what kind of new crew they've coming in either.
  10. Not true Grecoref. I personally saw Coach BAM! get a take down shadow wrestling....unfortunately he was quickly reversed and then pinned. So sad. :'(
  11. It seems the IU coaches had some tough decisions in a couple of weight classes. I suppose it's hard to keep some one like Ortega on the bench, maybe harder for Hernandez to make 133lb, so Hernandez moves to 41 and then there is Kelly. I think Dingo called it, he's a kind of scraper and never really thought of in the same light as the other guys. Still, at times he showed his metal. Then you've got the whole thing with Coughlin & Kinser and to a lesser degree Powless & Kuhn. All in all though, I had a great time going to watch them wrestle this year. I wonder what's next for Hernandez and Kelly? Good luck to the Hoosiers at the NCAA's and to all the Indiana boys staking a claim for the title!
  12. Oh man....just when I thought we were becoming friends. :-[
  13. At Senior night, it was Parker, Samuels, Kelly, and Hernandez...hope that helps. Parker, Samuels and Kelly did not red shirt, Hernandez and Coughlin did. Coughlin is a redshirt Junior this year....like Angel.
  14. I'm starting to hear the fat lady sing on this argument....in Hoosierdaddy's favor! 2009 IU Big Ten Results 1 Big Ten Champion 6 NCAA seeds 69 total team points 9th place 2008 IU Big Ten Results 1 Big Ten Champion 8 NCAA seeds 80 total team points 8th place Time to give it up Disco and admit that this year's team just does not have the pedigree of last years team...nor some of the others before last year for that matter.
  15. Agreed on Powless and Young. True warriors and a good early start in the Big 10's for both. Go Hoosiers! I'll look at the 2007 stuff.

  17. Nice article on one of the Hoosiers 141 lbers - from the Indiana Daily Student Saturday, February 28, 2009 | Last Update at 07:54 AM EDT Senior trades spotlight for loyalty Sean Morrison | IDS Senior Scott Kelly lifts teammate Junior Nick Walpole for a body slam during practice on Tuesday afternoon at the University Gymnasium. By Frank Therber | IDS POSTED AT 12:26 AM ON Feb. 26, 2009 | PRINT | COMMENTS (0) | EMAIL | Every team has its role-players ? athletes who are committed, but rarely see the spotlight of competition. The No. 18 IU wrestling team is no exception. The Hoosiers (15-7-1, 2-5-1) head into the Big Ten Tournament next month relying on the preparation that will ready grapplers like No. 5 Angel Escobedo, No. 13 Kurt Kinser and No. 15 Trevor Perry for the competition in collegiate wrestling?s toughest conference. Those names are familiar, but what about the unsung heroes who grind it out on the mat each day for the sake of the team, not getting the media and fan hype more notable wrestlers receive? Scott Kelly, a senior and 141-pound member of the IU wrestling team, knows all too well. Kelly, a native of Carmel, Ind., and four-year member, rarely competes in meets but practices regularly. Many would wonder what would make a former Carmel High School state champion like Kelly put in the work and sweat for no chance at competition. Kelly said his payback is anything but nonexistent. ?I love Indiana, and I love this school,? Kelly said. ?I always knew I wanted to wrestle because of the lessons it taught me and because I loved it.? Going undefeated his senior year at Carmel, the former Greyhound could have gone to a smaller school and held a bigger role throughout his four years, but his love of IU and the wrestling coaches landed him in Bloomington. ?The coaching staff here treated me better than any other school did throughout the recruiting process,? Kelly said. ?The guys here are role models, and I thought to myself that they are people I want to be like when I grow up.? That?s not to say there were never bumps in the road for Kelly, but the family-like atmosphere of everyone in the IU athletic department, as well as the lessons wrestling taught him, kept him going through the tough times. ?All of the athletes here have always been great to me, and I?ve made so many friends,? Kelly said. ?I had to keep going for them.? This past December, Kelly?s payoff came through the pride he had in his school, peers and the respect he earned. That is when the unexpected came his way. At the Midlands tournament over winter break in Evanston, Ill., Kelly competed for the Hoosiers and placed eighth in his weight class, aiding IU in a fifteenth-place finish. The win at the Midlands only reinforced Kelly?s belief that one has to look at the big picture when tempted to quit or focus solely on the wins and losses. Just last week, Andrae Hernandez, Kelly?s practice partner, upset No. 2 Alex Tsirtsis of unbeaten Iowa in the 141-pounds matchup, and Goldman said he felt Kelly played a large part in it. ?He?s pushed Andrae very, very hard, and it has really helped him. I think he has put the work in and has really become the best wrestler he can be,? IU coach Duane Goldman said. Goldman said Kelly?s contributions to the IU wrestling program are invaluable. ?The thing Scott brings is inspiration through his work ethic,? he said. ?We know we?re always going to get a solid effort from him.? Kelly said wrestling has given him more than he has given the sport. ?The harder you work, the more directly it will impact your success,? he said, ?and that?s something I?ll always carry with me.?
  18. Nice to see Tyler Goble as Champ. He seemed to drop off the map a couple of years ago.
  19. Sorry Disco, my brother, but the Big Ten numbers just don't support your claim that this years Hoosiers are light years ahead of the 2007/2008 squad. Seven of ten weights for this years squad preformed worse than last year. I'll update again for NCAA Qualifiers and All Americans. 2008-2009 Team 125 lbs. Angel Escobedo 6-2 133 lbs. Matt Ortega 2-6 141 lbs. Andrae Hernandez 2-4 141 lbs. Scott Kelly 0-2 149 lbs. Nick Walpole 3-5 157 lbs. Kurt Kinser 5-3 165 lbs. Paul Young 4-4 174 lbs. Trevor Perry 4-4 184 lbs. 21. Totally awesome pic's. Especially the ones with the clock in the back ground! Any parent with a State Champ would love a photo like that. Nice job.
  22. Coach P is a nice guy besides being a great coach. I've sent emails to him in the past about CIA. His responses have always been prompt and friendly. He is concerned about getting the kids in the room first and foremost. I've always been impressed with him.
  23. IU finally breaks out and takes the Golden Gophers down up in MN. Overall, nice match ups for IU. Hoosierdaddies lock of the day is Trevor Perry throwing the head lock and getting 6 for the Hoosiers. For the Iowa match, I got a little silly with the picks, so it's back to reality today and I think the Hoosiers can take this one and end up with 3 wins in the Big Ten for the first time in a while. Maybe Disco is rubbing off on me and maybe this team is better than past squads. Records before Friday night matches..... 125 lbs - Angel Escobedo (18-2, 5-1) vs. #7 Zach Sanders (31-3, 5-2) IU 3-0 For guts & glory. The road warrior will bring all that he can again. 133 lbs.- Matt Ortega (21-9, 2-4) vs. #5 Jayson Ness (28-5, 5-2) MN 3-6 More growing pains. 141 lbs.- Andrae Hernandez (13-10, 1-3) vs. #7 Mike Thorn (25-12, 4-3) MN 3-10 Would love to Dre come off the Tsirtsis with a nice follow up, still, my gut tells me it won't happen. 149 lbs.- Nick Walpole (23-16, 2-4) vs. Joe Grygelko (7-16, 1-6) IU 6-10 Walpole finally gets a breather after battleing in armeggedan the last few matches 157 lbs.- #13 Kurt Kinser (16-4, 4-2) vs. Tyler Safratowich (25-10, 5-2) IU 10-10 Mr. Intensity takes care of business. 165 lbs.- Paul Young (25-10, 3-3) vs. Scott Glasser (19-13, 3-4) IU 13-10 Young closes this one out and wrestles the full 7 minutes 174 lbs.- #15 Trevor Perry (24-11, 3-3) vs. Kaleb Young (17-15, 0-4) IU 19-10 Perry sees an opportunity and lands the big one for the pin. Matt Everson (6-6, 1-2) 184 lbs.- Eric Cameron (19-13, 0-3) vs. Sonny Yohn (7-12, 1-6) MN 19-13 Cameron could make this one interesting. It would be nice to see him notch a "W". 197 lbs.- Matt Powless (18-10, 4-2) vs. Gordon Bierschenk (12-11, 4-2) IU 22-13 Too many opponents underestimate this frosh. 285 lbs.- Nate Everhart (22-12, 5-1) vs. #17 Ben Berhow (23-6, 7-0) MN 22-16 Could be a coming out party for Everhart, and I hope it is, still, Berhow appears to be one tough cookie.
  24. Hmmmm...light years? I don't know about that, but I'll grant you that so far, this years team has a slight edge in the numbers. We'll see what they look like after today's match. In addition, last years squad sent 8 to the big dance. Curious to see how many they'll send this year...
