  1. Sorry, I am a little slow...what does that list represent?
  2. So you would contend that someone from Penn and someone from Culver Community has an equal probability of making the state finals?
  3. Regardless of what it does to attendance, I sure hope no one ever makes a decision for children's activities based on what the fans want to see. That being said, why don't people hold the same fondness for ticket round matches with no wrestle-backs? It is way more exciting to watch a single-elimination 16-wrestler bracket determine who goes to state than allowing first round losers to wrestle all the way back to qualify for a spot.
  4. You had me until the last three words. We should not design children's competitions for fan enjoyment.
  5. You have made an excellent point. Unfortunately, that is not applicable to our sport.
  6. Does the IHSAA attempt to achieve competitive balance in any other sports? Would it be wise to try to join forces with other coaches associations and give a more multi-sport argument to the way our state tournaments are generally constructed? Personally, competitive balance is ranked below classing the tournament and having wrestle backs on the priority list. That is because those are specific to our/individual sport(s), where competitive balance calls into question the entire IHSAA post-season philosophy across the board.
  7. Hopefully none of our sports bases their decisions on post season tournaments on fan experience.
  8. Why wrestle backs and not classes? All arguments against classes work for wrestle backs: 1. More exciting - way more exciting to have a semi-final ticket round match where the winner goes on and the loser goes home, no re-dos 2. Work harder - if you work hard enough, you will be the bad draw. Go to camps, RTCs, etc and you won't need to "wrestle back" 3. Watered down - why give a kid who can't win through a chance to get back into the race? You lost, tough luck. Work harder - see #2 Understand, I am in favor of classes and wrestle backs. However, it does not make sense to me that people can logically conclude that it is unfair for a kid to get a "bad draw," but not logically conclude that it is unfair for a kid to have a disadvantage going to a much smaller school.
  9. Middle school wrestling is regulated the same way every other middle school sport is regulated - case by case, conference by conference, school by school. At our duals, we just match them up by size, age, and ability and let them wrestle a couple times. We can't afford to adhere to weight classes or dual scores. We have to do what we can to keep kids engaged and give them a meaningful experience in hopes that they will come back next year. In a way, I am thankful for that. Wrestling is hard and it teaches a lot of valuable lessons on its own. For us, team scores and making weight aren't necessary at 11, 12, 13 years old. We will teach them that in high school.
  10. Hopefully they let the ladies continue blocking weights. The small teams need that to keep interest and build programs. As for the men, without a middle and bottom, the sport will not be able to sustain itself.
  11. We just keep our roster at single digits, so we don't have to do wrestle-offs.....
  12. Culver Community - 4 ladies Would love to hear from other small/HNAC schools on this.
  13. Can’t really pinpoint why, but I have always felt that Bellmont is one of the coolest sounding school names.
  14. Thank you both. We did not get any instructions on removing the wax, but good to know we're not just going nuts. We will investigate and move forward with a solution. IndianaMat for the win once again:}
  15. We recently had new mats put down in our wrestling room. They are great except that there seems to be some kind of oily or waxy layer on the surface of the mat. Not sure if it will wear off or if there is something we can do to get it removed. We have mopped several times, but it's still there. Has anyone else had an issue like this and can provide any insight?
  16. What is the format? Will this be bracketed or round robin? Are you accepting teams of all sizes or are you trying to get full rosters only? We have four, and none with more than one year experience. With the drive for us being almost 2 hours, it would really help if we knew we could expect 3 matches per wrestler. If not, we totally understand. Just want to know what to expect.
  17. That's because you saw him in person:} Once you saw him, it was hard to bet against him...freak athlete at any size, let alone at 285. Outstanding young man as well.
  18. Since you brought it up.... Another fun fact is Jeremiah won every match of that run (except two, more on those later...) by either first period pin or overtime victory. One of the two he didn't win by first period pin or OT was Howe who he pinned in the second period. Howe was ranked #2 at the time, and many had him picked to win it all. The other was in the (Merrillville!) semistate semifinals against (future champ) Abe Hall who had given Jeremiah all four of his losses that season. Needless to say, it was as thrilling a run as one could have. Truly a case of "lightning in a bottle." And if you can't tell, I am eternally grateful to have been a part of it.
  19. Yes, again my firm stance is on multiple lineups, not adding up to 2 extra wrestlers. The 2 extra rule seems intriguing, but is not one I have fully formed an opinion on yet.
  20. My post was in response to teams being allowed to enter multiple lineups, not the use 14 wrestlers, even if some are at the same weight scenario. That is one that I have more mixed feelings about and definitely think has some merit, but would need to discuss in a real-time conversation to fully form an opinion on. Generally, though if we have too may forfeits and sectional, allowing the really good teams to wrestle even more wrestlers does not seem like a wise long-term solution.
  21. They don't consider prior success for sectional placement in any sport. They will bump schools up in classed tournaments if the school shows consistent levels of success, but these same issues happen in every sport. In 1A football, Pioneer and LCC would be by far the top two teams in the state and would routinely meet in the first round or two of sectional about a decade or so ago. Seems like the only way to have the success of a program dictate state series match-ups is if we...oh, never mind...
  22. And to go further with your last paragraph, feel free to head on down to southern Marshall county and help us run the program. We currently have openings for: - Intramural Youth coach - Elementary League coach - MS assistant coach The guy filling those positions currently would be happy to turn his paycheck over to a willing and qualified individual. We also could possibly talk the AD/board into opening a girls coaching position if the right person wanted to fill the job.
  23. Allowing powerhouse schools to enter multiple lineups would choke out more of the average and below programs. Without average and below programs, the sport will cease to exist in a school-sponsored format and will eventually become a club-only system. The goal of HS sports is to create a valuable and beneficial experience to prepare for adulthood. If the experience at one's school does not meet these goals, it may be wise to seek another school or another way to achieve those goals.
