  1. I have been able to coach several sports over the last 15 years primarily with soccer being the main sport I coach. I really have seen an increase in the number of one sport athletes. I have had kids who were playing multiple sports at the same time ie; middle school soccer, AAU wrestling, and baseball. It was very frustrating as a coach, the kids were tired, and the parents were out of control. The parents wanted them to be good at every sport they played. I always said that a multiple sport athlete may always be good at what they play, but they won't be great. I understand that there are some exceptions to this as some kids are just gifted. So what are your thoughts about kids totally focused on one sport vs kids who play multiple sports. Who are some of the best 1 sport only wrestlers in the state and who are some of the best multiple sport wrestlers?
  2. If only we didn't have to listen to them! I am greatful that they are there and I can watch from my recliner. But I think I would rather listen to more Christmas music.
  3. Ok I am sitting here at work waitibg to hear results. Please post any Mishawaka results here!
  4. I hope you remember when I taught you how to make picks back in the day at the Jay County sectional with Sheets and Thieme.
  5. Thanks Dane! I think I need some sleep... You might have just saved my chances... Well... Probably not!!! LOL

  7. Also, the Faurote family from Bellmont should be added to this list. I believe there was B.J., Tim, John, Sean, Ben, Clark, and now Brooks. I may have missed a couple! LOL
  8. Hey Dane, I sent you a PM a while ago. Never heard back from you. What's up with that?
  9. Wrestlebacks would have been a better way to add an hour to semi-state. Take for example Billy Baker last year. Loses a close match to Stahl. Stahl goes on to win state and Baker goes home. I am willing to bet the bank that the top 4 guys from Fort Waybe at 189 did not make it to state last year.
  10. Is Logan Dillon from Norwell wrestling this year? I have not seen him in any Norwell results and he isn't seeded for the ECIC. I would suggest you consider Grant Melcher from Bellmont. He is 9-2 on the season. Maybe worth a top 8. Also, Andrew Bultemeier is 10-0 at 189. AC has Matt Kaehr who is 7-0 at 140. Unfortunately, these two teams did not wrestle tonight due to the weather.
  11. I think I got a boo for speaking the truth!
  12. What does the score or how many years in a row a particular team has defeated the opponent? A rivalry is a rivalry. Bellmont and AC are two schools in the same county who have both had a great deal of wrestling success. Ask any Bellmont or AC fan and they will agree that this wrestling meet is a big rivalry. The great thing is that after the dual meet, the teams tend to cheer for each other throughout the individual tournament.
  13. I recommend you attend the next meeting between Bellmont and AC. It is STILL and probably always will be one of the best rivalries in Indiana.
  14. One thing I really like about this site is the fact that you can actually have an opinion and not always get banned or have posts deleted!
  15. Congrats S.A. I thought it would be closer.
  16. I know that I will never forget Stout's headlock!
  17. Some other teams that I would like to see on this list are : Adams Central, Cathedral, FT. Wayne Snider, L.N. and Bloomington North/South.
  18. Despite a drag racing start to the 2008-2009 wrestling campaign, Bellmont should be Bellmont this season, with high expectations. Despite the key losses of team-leader Ryan Baker, third at 160 last year at state, 171-pounder Ben Bultemeier (92-31), and state streeter Doug Linthicum, the Bellmont wrestling machine slaps in some new charges and keeps right on going. The Braves, 6-0 thus far, have just seven full-time starters back, led by three-time state streeter Tyler Baker at 152 and last year's fourth-place finisher at 125, Will Sheets. Baker, 39-4 in '08 and 101-18 overall, took sixth at 145 a year ago and could possibly go down to that weight again. Sheets, 36-9 last year and 94-29, has already wrestled in three weight classes and will wait to make up his mind. Billy Baker, a state streeter as a sophomore, lost in the round-to-go at semistate last year to the eventual state champ, and he shifts up a weight to 215 pounds this year. He was 38-4 last year and is 85-15 for his career. Senior Trent Busse (32-13 and 61-28) goes up a class to 160 this year. Junior Carlin Hormann (21-20 and 30-28), shifts up a few weights to 135 starting out, and he could go down one class. Sophomore Will Busse shifts up five classes to 140 pounds after a 26-15 frosh campaign. The new faces in the upper weight crowd gives Bellmont unusal depth and flexibility. Three upper weight starters have some varsity wrestling experience after backing up strong Bellmonters the last few years. Senior first-team All-State football player Grant Melcher, 5-4, will start at 171 pounds and junior Andrew Bultemeier, 3-1 last year, will battle at 189 with sophomore Travis Thatcher. Junior heavyweight Taylor Schenk has limited varsity experience, but heads a field of four in that class for the Braves this year, though Thatcher or Bultemeier could head up to that class to challenge. Melcher is already 5-1 this year while Bultememier (4-0) and Thatcher (3-0) are unbeaten. "After 160, we have only one starter returning among the four classes, but that doesn't mean we won't have some strong competitors out there. Other teams haven't heard of these guys, but we know what they're capable of doing. They were just backing up some pretty good kids," said Faurote. "They're coming off that successful football season, and they know what effort and pushing themselves can lead to." There are jayvee and back-up wrestlers for the heavy three classes. Senior Taylen Reidenbach, 11-13, will open as the 125-pounder, and the three lower slots will all go to freshmen: Blake Adams will be at 103, Dewey Melcher at 112, and Brooks Faurote at 119 pounds. Adams is 5-1, Melcher 5-0 and Faurote 4-2 thus far. "This is the first time in three seasons that we won't have any forfeits in the lightweights," noted a relieved Faurote, who has 35 out for the team this year. "I'm really pleased with our freshmen right now. They need to get some varsity experience and then we'll just see how they do," said the coach. The BHS lightweights then put on a show, finishing off the meet in style as Blake Adams, Dewey Melcher and Brooks Faurote all had impressive wins. "It was fun to see us have a lightweight who's going to win a lot of matches. Unfortunately, in the last two years we haven't had that," said Faurote. "Dewey hits stuff nobody else does, and things we don't teach in the room. He's bendable, flexible and gets out of stuff he shouldn't. He should be on his back giving up nearfall points, but instead he gets the takedown," said Faurote on the match on Tuesday at New Haven, an 11-1 win. Brooks Faurote jumped on junior Colin Shaffer Tuesday, going up 8-0 before the 2:25 fall. "Brooks has had a lot of success in middle school and in U.S.A. wrestling, but now he's up with the big boys," said the coach of his son. Brooks finished second in the state middle school tournney and earned a runner-up finish in state U.S.A. action a year ago. Jacob Girod and John Poling are two more 103-pound frosh. Bobby Keuneke is a strong 112-pound freshman who will see varsity action. There are 13 freshmen on the roster. Sophomore John Mahlan went 9-5 last year in the middle weights and will be fighting Hankenson for the 145-pound slot. Both will get varsity experience. The loser of this wrestle-off might have to cut weight. The coach likes the prospects of Billy Baker, a first team All-Stater who was the leader of the outstanding Bellmont defense this past fall. "Billy Baker is one of the few guys in that state championship mix at 215 pounds. With a better draw, he's top four last year," said Faurote. The coach expects another strong campaign from the consistently excellent Tyler Baker, who starts at 152. "Tyler's a technician, a good one. Sheets has high goals this year after a great state tournament to end last season," offered the coach. He feels that Trent Busse, a mainstay for the football team, "can be a state placer." "And Hormann, he's 130 pounds and look at the way he hit people on the football field. He'll be better this year," predicted the coach. Hormann is 4-2, and could go anywhere from 125 to 135 pounds, depending on Sheets' final choice. He calls Will Busse "one of the great athletes in the room. He had 26 wins as a freshman and he's improved." Zach Wetzel is a back-up and already has a varsity match, as does junior Andy Weaver at 145. Faurote feels that Schenk is working hard to turn the corner this season. "The confidence he had to have gained this fall will help. He just needs to get a few wins under his belt," said the coach. He praised Hankenson (4-1), a starting cornerback for the state championship football team, for his 21-win freshman season, which put him at semistate. He also pointed out the successful cross country season that Adams had for coach Randy Hisner. The coach likes the fact that Reidenbach joined the team as a freshm with no prior wrestling experience, and has been a positive vartsity contributor the last two seasons. "Guys won't come out because they're intimidated. Taylen proved a kid can come out, work hard and get things done for us. He's picked up things well," said Faurote of his senior starter. Also graduating from last year's team were Scott Gaskill at 215 and heavyweight Clint Wurm. Veteran varsity assistants Paul Gunsett and Tim Myers return. John Friedt and Sean Faurote are assistants helping out before they take the middle school wrestlers. Steve Hankenson and Matt Birch are volunteer assistants. The Braves are slated to take on a thinned-down Snider team on Thursday, and then travel to DeKalb for the annual early-season four-way, which includes Norwell and East Noble. To get back to Team State for the 13th time in 14 years, the Braves will have to go through Monroe this year. Team Semistate has been cancelled, and just the sectional champs will advance. The new pairings put sectional winners at Carroll and New Haven in with Delta and Jay County. Adams Central, which had the most successful wrestling sectional in the state for over two decades, answered the call from the IHSAA and agreed to host Team Regional. The Braves will likely have to beat back a challenge from perennial area power Yorktown at AC in order to go to the final eight. Bellmont Results Bellmont 40, N. Castle 35 Bellmont 36, N. Grove TBA ADAMS CENTRAL By JIM HOPKINS Despite having only 18 wrestlers out, second-year Adams Central coach Doug Schultz ?can?t be happier with the attitude. Year two is good,? said the coach, welcomes five freshmen to his squad. ?Sure, I?d like more numbers, but I?m super happy. I?ll take the 18 kids we?ve got with a super work ethic and be satisfied,? said the coach, whose Jets are 1-0 after a 33-30 win over Leo last week. One of those frosh, 112-pounder Derek Roe, came to the mat with the score tied, and delivered the decision and victory versus Leo. The Jets, with some definite holes in the lineup, went 5-15 in Doug?s first year as the varsity coach. He vowed to change attitudes when it took over and has produced a team with a serious approach for 2008-2009. ?We can fill it,? said Schultz of the 14-man lineup. ?Some of the guys are going to have to make some compromises and go up a weight for the duals, but that?s what they need to do for the team.? Schultz feels that the Jets will ?be very competitive? in their schedule. ?With the skills and work habits, there?s no reason this group can?t win a lot of matches.? said Schultz. ?We should finish in the top half of the conference, right there in the top three,? said Schultz, who pointed to strong South Adams and Garrett teams as the favorites in the ACAC this season. The Jets travel to Berne to meet the Stars tonight. Back to lead the squad this year are two key seniors, Trey Schultz and Matt Kaehr. Schultz, who will start out at 189 pounds, had a superb 31-3 season and won his second straight ACAC crown. He is 82-21 for his career. Kaehr went 20-6 and is 53-34 for his career. ?Kaehr is back and he?s excited,? said Coach Schultz. ?He loves to wrestle and he?s a quality wrestler. We expect good things out of him.? ?Trey is probably our strong suit,? said Schultz of his son. Trey?s football season ended prematurely because of concussions, but he?s fine now, according to the coach. ?Trey looks strong at 189, which is a natural weight for him. He?s physically strong enough to wrestle there if he wants to stay, but he could cut to 71.? Another senior with a lot of experience is 215-pounder Aden Feasel, who went 14-13 last year and is 25-39 for his career. ?Feasel had 14 wins last year. He?s manning up, getting tougher, getting to be a better wrestler,? praised the coach. Lightweights returning include Nathan Hess, a sophomore who went 16-17 last year at 103, Michael Hirschy (6-8), Blake Thieme (18-13), and Jared Schwartz (3-22). Roe at 103 and 112, and Zeke Schultz (125) will secure spots, with Hess battling for 103- and 112-pound slots. Hirschy will start out at varsity 112 and will likely see some action at 119. Schwartz will be the starting 135-pounder. ?Hirschy is much-improved and we expect good things from him,? said Schultz. ?I?m super happy with the freshmen,? said Schultz. ?Zeke and Derek both have strong wrestling backgrounds. They?ve wrestled a lot since they were little. The rest of freshmen are real athletic.? Junior Brady Stevens, 12-16 last year, will be at 160 and Junior Lee Wefel (7-14) will be the 171-pounder. ?Stevens is a tough, tough kid. He?s not a great technician, but a brawler and he likes it that way. He?ll use that to his advantage,? said the coach. Junior Alex Reinhard, 6-5 and 270 pounds, will be the new heavyweight. Taylor Free is set for the 152-pound slot. Taylor Isch, a freshman, will start at 140. Thieme bumps up a few classes. ?Thieme is a strong, strong kid. I don?t see 130 being a problem for him,? said Schultz. Reinhard, who played football for the first time this past fall, is having to learn some wrestling moves. ?Reinhard is definitely improving, definitely learning and getting tougher every day,? praised the coach. Nick Heyerly, a sophomore, will back up Reinhard. The Jets dropped the Columbus East Tournney and picked up a Super Dual at Kokomo. The Jets will be back at Warren Central late in the season, and that meet is now a Super Dual with the additions of Northwestern and Indianapolis Howe. Ben Davis and Roncalli will return. Adams Central will be the site for the Team Regional this year. Sectional champions from Jay County, Delta, New Haven and Carroll will compete for the right to go to the Team State Finals. ?We?ve got some good, young wrestlers and we?ve challenged the freshmen to get 15 varsity wins,? said Schultz. ?They?ll take their lumps, though.? ?I?m super positive right now. The 18 kids we have are all dedicated, and hard working. It couldn?t be better,? said Schultz. SOUTH ADAMS By JIM HOPKINS Fourth-year South Adams wrestling coach Eric Myers is counting on sophomores and freshmen to occupy nine of the 14 slots in his starting lineup as he hopes to keep up the momentum established a year ago when the Stars took the ACAC championship and went 22-4. So far, with the help of clutch wins by 215-pound senior Jackson Werst against Garrett and Jay County, the Stars are getting it done with 11 victories and no losses. ?It?s really hard to say that we?re going to have a better team, losing three guys with over 300 career wins,? stated Myers, pointing out the loss of Josh Mann, Colt Gentis and Jim Marbach. ?Those guys you could count on about 90 percent of the time. That?s a lot of wins to replace,? said Myers. Werst beat his Jay County foe 3-1 on Saturday, clinching the win over the Pats 39-33. With the Stars trailing 30-13, Werst had to get a win against Garrett?s Geoff Getts, and did, 7-1. The final tally was 34-30 South Adams as the Stars improved to 2-0 in the ACAC. Thus far, the Stars won the five-team Daleville Invitational, then took the six-team South Adams Invitational this past Saturday, avenging a loss to Jay a year ago. ?Our team will go as far as our leadership will take it,? said Myers. ?We?re putting a lot of weight on the shoulders of Werst and Chase Sprunger (152). We?ll see if those guys can carry their load and motivate this team.? The Stars return one state streeter in sophomore Josh Ehr, who is making a big leap from 112 pounds to 135 this year. He?s 10-1, losing only to Bryce Schendel, a state wrestler last year for Garrett at 135, 5-0. ?It was a good match. Schendel is an awesome scrambler. Ehr got caught and gave up some nearfall points, but it was a fun match to watch,? said Myers. Ehr improved at a steady rate last year, finishing second in the ACAC, third at sectional, second at regional and fourth at semistate to earn his Conseco card. Sprunger earned his 100th win Saturday and now is sixth on the SA win list with 104 victories. He?s going 152 this year and is 11-0. Werst is unbeaten as is junior heavyweight Jim West, who rolled out a strong 31-8 campaign last year. Werst has 47 career wins and is a two-time regional qualifier. West is a defending ACAC champ and was second at sectional. Gabe Sprunger was a regional qualifier and ACAC runner-up last year with 27 wins. He moves up to 112. Junior John Striker, 26-12 last year, is the 130-pounder for Myers this year. Nick Taylor went 13-21 last year and will be the 160-pounder as a junior. Sophomore Kolton Dailey makes a big jump in weight and will fill the 189-pound slot, competing with frosh Cody Conner. Dustin Hunt (140) and Adam Hofstetter (171) both have limited starting experience. T.J. Burnfield, who had to drink water to make 160 pounds last year, is back at 140 and is 10-1 for the Stars. A big addition to the team has been lanky frosh Todd Batt, who has jump-started his varsity career at 103 with 11 straight wins. ?Batt placed third at middle school state last year and has come in strong,? said Myers. Cajon Dailey had some experience last year and now moves in full time at 119 pounds as a sophomore. Frosh Jordan Landers will be at 125 pounds. Frosh Isaac Werst will see some action at 152 if Sprunger goes at 145. Frosh Drew Taylor has seen action at 171 and frosh Cody Conner will be competing at both 171 and 189. The Stars had five freshmen in the lineup in the win over Garrett. ?We?re hoping to beat a little of the youth out of them, get them a little more focused,? said Myers of his freshmen. ?We certainly have plenty of things to work on, and a long way to go, but it?s a good start,? said the SA coach. The Stars will be tested this Saturday at New Castle, taking on ranked teams Yorktown, New Castle and Roncalli.
  19. Bellmont has 3 talented freshman in Blake Adams (103), Dewey Melcher (112), and Brooks Faurote (119).
  20. Wow hearing all these names really takes me back. Hey AJ, how about a all-time Muncie Southside team? There are some good names to add to that list!
  21. I love fishing. I went to the Florida Keys 2 years ago for my first saltwater fishing experience. Needless to say fishing to me has never been the same.
