  1. Things are where they should be. You want to compare a big school JV guy who has wrestled for a few years vs a small school varsity guy wrestling his first year to fill a spot? Big schools are set up to have more qualifiers because they have more guys and more experience to pull from. These stats are what they should be. I'm for class wrestling not because these stats should be equal but because these stats show it is unfair.
  2. I've had similar thoughts to this possibility. And I think it is the type of proposal that the IHSAA might actually consider. An individual with a good relationship with the IHSAA has spent time explaining to them how 8 mats could be put on the floor of Bankers Life. That opens up the possibility of doubling the number of matches on Friday night in the same amount of time. 24 wrestlers per weight could be run in 2 rounds with the semi state champs and runners-up with a first round bye and 3 vs 6 (winner gets a 2) and 4 vs 5 (winner gets a 1). More wrestlers in the same amount of time means more money for the IHSAA. For semistate, we ask to bring back the IHSAA's own idea of wrestling to 5th/6th from the quarter final losers. At most, this would add about an hour or none if semistates were doing the semifinals on only 2 mats. Just use the other 2 mats for the consolation semis and wrestle a third mat during the finals for 5th place. Heck, don't even get them ribbons - they're just happy to have the chance to qualify for state. Plus they get to earn team points which could have impacted at least 2 semistate championships this year. The only snag I can see is Merrillville's gym because they wouldn't be able to break down to 2 mats to add more seating after the second round. But it could be used as a push to finally move that semistate to a bigger gym. Just propose it while the pink lady is on vacation or something. Overall, I think it could be a great plan that is feasibly acceptable by the IHSAA. Just imagine how exciting semistate would be... You still get the same ticket round where you win and you qualify plus you get semifinals that are more meaningful to earn a bye at state and we all get another ticket round side-by-side with the semis. And it's all with very little time added to either Saturday.
  3. The 106 bracket has been fixed with the alternate in the correct spot.

  5. Then I was either lied to or the IHSAA was inconsistent with their answers.
  6. My mistake - An unseeded wrestler does have a chance to draw a bye, but it is a statistically lower chance than a seeded wrestler. The IHSAA did not formally approve it. It was more of a phone call... Tournament Director: "Hey, can we do this?" IHSAA: "Yeah, that makes sense." I'm not surprised that there isn't a record of their "approval". Since most at the IHSAA don't understand wrestling, whoever words the question to them is likely to get the answer they are hoping for.
  7. An unseeded wrestler has zero chance to draw a bye, so it is possible to take away the "chance" of a seeded wrestler drawing a bye and instead just give it to him. When the round of 16 doesn't score any team points, the top seeds should be given the byes. No wrestler should have his season end the first round of sectionals by drawing into the state champ. I don't care if he's 0-20 or if he just missed being seeded based on a technicality. The IHSAA has approved this and some sectionals already do it. I'm disappointed that the IHSAA has not told all sectionals to do it.
  8. Foxcatcher is not nominated for best picture for the oscars. (it was nominated for the golden globes, but lost) It did get 5 oscar nominations though: Carrell for best actor Ruffalo for supporting actor Miller for best director Make Up (I'm guessing just for Carrell's nose) Writing - original screenplay
  9. The 300 mile rule is old and outdated. I don't know when it was added, but it was probably at a time when travel was a lot more difficult than it is now. It just has never been changed with the times. I also feel that the IHSAA is going out of their jurisdiction by basically imposing a rule on teams from outside our state. If the IHSAA wants to say we can't travel more than 300 miles, so be it. But for them to say a team from New Jersey can't come here to compete, even though it is allowed by their state, is just wrong. The IHSAA has allowed very few exceptions to this rule in the past. It was mostly for basketball to put the national spotlight on a star player vs another star player from a different state. I think there also was an exception in basketball several years ago for a fundraiser tournament in Illinois with other national schools outside the rule's boundaries. (but my memory is not what it used to be) If coaches associations from most of the sports were to unite and petition for a change, I think this one is possible.
  10. Correct. Instead of very limited contact with athletes all summer, the IHSAA added just one week (moratorium) without any contact. We are much better off now. I agree with this rule and that it should be the same week for everyone for all sports. It ensures that all high school athletes in Indiana get a full week of a break, even if they play 2 or 3 sports. As a coach, it's helpful for me, too, because I always know that the week of the 4th of July I won't be having any summer workouts, so I can plan to spend uninterrupted time with my family. Disney Duals is always around moratorium week, so coaches who take their teams know they might have to choose not to go or have a non-coach lead their team for part of it. There are other tournament options available. If none of the Indiana teams participate this year, then Disney will definitely take a hit in their number of teams and possibly make a change, but it is unlikely.

  12. Here is what happened. (Leaving out names since it's not my place to call out anyone). Hamilton Heights arrived late after everyone else weighed in so only a few refs and coaches were still in the weigh in room, including me. The wrestler weighed 126.1 on the first scale. Went to the second scale and weighed 126.1 but the official announced that he made weight. However, a coach saw the weight and let the official know what he saw. In the coaches meeting, the official apologized for his wrong doing and explained what had happened. The tournament director did the only thing he could do at that point. Hamilton Height's alternate is the one who was wrongly affected because he didn't know he should have stepped on the scale at weigh-ins. The official rightfully took the blame. Nobody else did anything wrong. It was a great tournament with outstanding wrestlers and competition from all the schools. This one mistake should not overshadow the whole day of wrestling.
