  1. I'm all for doing as many extra circular activities as possible. But if a kid isn't doing so then he/she needs freestyle and greco in their life. I always enjoyed freestyle more than folkstyle and like greco more than freestyle.
  2. I had that when I competed in the 80's. I went to a small school and played football, wrestled and ran track. In the bigger schools it seems kids specialize a bit more. It is hard to be a multi-sport athlete bc everything is so competitive. Perhaps I'm wrong.
  3. I know CG has a lot of Freestyle and Greco participation. I believe we sent 7 juniors and cadets last year to Fargo. All of them medaled at IHSAA state except 1 who lost in the blood round at Semi State. Nothing beats mat time and working on your feet. Greco is a whole different tool bag that can make the difference in a tight match.
  4. Does your high school program encourage wrestling freestyle and greco? Why?
  5. Fountain Central High School Other than Jim Helwig (The Ultimate Warrior), I'd say our most accomplished wrestler is Laine Frazee who placed 8th in state.
  6. I can confirm Jim Helwig is a Fountain Central product. He does have family in beautiful Crawfordsville.
  7. The topic is "Who's your school's most accomplished wrestler". She's probably the most accomplished wrestler from Indiana. Olympic Bronze Medalist 4x World Championship Medalist
  8. I see his picture on the wall of fame every time I go to CG. Couldn't remember his stats. Impressive.
  9. Center Grove: This one would be hard to say without a little research. I believe Charlie Larocca with his 2 state titles would have to be the answer. They've had many state champions but I believe Charlie is the only multiple champ. Drake Buchanan Hayden Watson Brayden Littell (undefeated) Sean Mappes (undefeated) The Yates Brothers (can't remember if any were state champs or multiple state champs) Ron Gaskins It is a program with a rich history and its continuing to get better.
  10. I think Gleason Mappes and Burk Van Horn wrestled the same weight a couple of consecutive years. They would've seen each other at the Johnson Co Tournament and the state tournament several times as they both went to the Mooresville Sectional. I wish I had the specifics but they could've wrestled 9-10 times.
  11. Ellis was the most dominant Indiana wrestler I saw.
  12. If you are talking about a single season then I respectfully submit Wyatt Krejsa's current season. -Undefeated in IN during the regular season. 29-2 coming into sectional. - Went 3-2 at the Walsh Ironman. His only losses of the season were at this tournament. He upset the #5, 145 in the nation. -Al Smith Title - Fall, Major, Fall, TF and Fall -Mooresville Sectional - Bye, Inj Def, Fall, TF -Mooresville Regional - Fall, Fall, TF -Evansville Semi State - Fall, Major, Fall, Fall (against the #2 ranked wrestler) -State Finals - Fall, Fall, TF, Dec (13-6 against the #2 ranked wrestler) That is a pretty good bit of work.
  13. I don't know why more coaches don't insist on their bigs wrestling greco. More tools in the toolbox. You can change the game if the match isn't going your way by breaking out the greco. It teaches position control and develops good hips and balance. A lot of people are afraid of getting thrown. Learn how to be thrown safely by drilling throws with your partner.
  14. McConnell wins a lot of matches. He frustrates a lot of wrestlers. Takes advantage of mistakes and gets his hand raised.
  15. I’d say the only problem the OP had was getting the cart before the horse. Strong CP supporter but perhaps a little too enthusiastic this time. CP already had a bullseye on their back (for good reason, they are a great team). No need to put a spotlight on it. Second, hate in a public forum typically points toward excellence and success. CP should embrace the vitriol bc it shows that they are doing things right to be successful. Bburg gets it too and should give that hate and nitpicking a big hug bc people are envious of success. People have hated Cathedral for years bc of the success of the program. Throw EMD into that group as well.
  16. Congrats to CG for a second consecutive runner-up finish. This was a very talented squad with great senior leadership and tournament tenacity. 106 - Hamilton was thrust into the starting line-up losing on Friday night to the state champ 120 - Charlie Larocca hits another gear in the tournament. Great effort when no one in the state thought he could do it, 2x state champ! Very nice kid with a good head on his shoulders. He'll join Drake Buchanan in CO wrestling for Air Force. 126 - Dominic Brown bows out in the blood round of the Evansville Semi State to EMD Schaefer 3-1. Kid has a bright future. 132 - Eddie Goss finishes 5th to become a 2x medalist. He'll be looking to improve his finish in his senior year. 138 - William Vander Luitgaren is a determined wrestler who lost Friday night. He's a sophomore with a lot of skill. 144 - Reece Courtney finished 3rd to close out his senior season. Kid can beat you a lot of different ways. Loads of skill and determination and a nice kid. 150 - Wyatt Kresja had arguably one of the best tournament runs to his first state title. He wrestled at an elite level all season. 157 - Silas Stits is all about desire and grit. A powerful wrestler who makes you earn every point. The junior finishes the season 7th. He'll be back for more. 175 - Noah Clouser finishes his senior in 5th place coming off a significant injury last year. Great work to rebound and medal. 190 - Kaden McConell ends his senior season in 5th place. Stud football player, stud wrestler and outstanding human. 285 - Nate Johnson was disappointed last year with his state tournament and did something about it. Wins the title as a senior. CG was deep at Heavyweight with TylerSchott sitting on the bench. I believe CG won every consolation and championship match last night. Coach Swain has them ready to wrestle come tournament time. They return a solid lineup next year. Looking forward to continued success for the Trojans.
  17. 195 McConnell vs Chavez rematch of the Al Smith Final
  18. 113 #5 Charlie LaRocca beat #4 Rioux and #1 Haines.
  19. Buchanan and Veazy in the semis at 182 should be fun.
  20. I believe all 4 220’s from the Mooresville sectional went through to semi state last year. I do recall several years back Burk VanHorn, Gleason Mappes and two others from the Mooresville sectional all medaled at the state finals. I think they were all at 160.
