Gavin Davis a champ from Leo! Looks like we sprinkle the heavier weights with some NE Indiana placers more than the lighter weights.

Leo's elementary team has been getting better the past few years.  I know Covid has killed the number of schools and teams at tourney's but their kids won elementary state this year and place high in most area tourneys.  Several years ago that club room for the elementary kids was bare.  It's a brawl now.  I have some family that's been in that wrestling room for their club.  Woods and Cameron Harris have pumped more life in that program than pretty much anyone in the northeast corner of the state has to their kids room.  That's what schools need to look at.  Building from their youth.

In terms of RTC in our area, Bellmont has a great acadamy that Tim Myers puts on spring through fall.  For little kids and middle school and high school.  AC has done some camps in years past as well.

  3. Looks good.

I know Cook from AC hasn't wrestled much since he had an injury, I expect to see him contend at SS though.  Darkhorse for those who do brackets.

Also, when the young Myers boy from Bellmont hits the lineup, I'm guessing he'll end up top 4 easy at 170 or 182.  They've been saying on the radio he'll be back in action soon.  Watch out for that kid.

  4. 1A-Tell City or North Posey.  I think they're each well above the rest.

2A-Jay County.  Pretty loaded team with tons of young talent.  Bellmont is 1-2 and just got beat 64-6 yesterday.  Yes, I understand they're coming off quarentine.  After watching AC wrestle Garrett, I wasn't impressed with Garrett either.  Had we not forfeited several weight classes we could have beat them.

Uhlman also had a decision win over Lewis. The conference has some really nice young talent in the 113-126 range. Definitely the deepest weights in my opinion this weekend. Bertsch from Bluffton adds to it as well.

I missed that.  Going to have to go back an rewatch it.  Was difficult trying to follow along all 3 mats with no sound, except when WZBD was on air.  Thank you.

And I agree about the 113-126 in our area (not even going to mention the rest of the state).  I've said it before, there could be a kid who leaves the JayCo Regional a 3rd or 4th and makes it through to Indy if the seeding works out.  They're really that stacked.  I think Uhlman should get some SS ranking love, and Cook had the Bellmont kid whooped pretty good at both Sectional and Regional before getting in a tough spot.  Cook should get his rankings up over the next month heading into Sectional.

  6. Some interesting matches during the ACAC's Friday and Saturday.  Austin Lewis from Bluffton beat both Reiley (JayCo) and Loshe (SA).  Reiley beat Loshe Friday evening as well.  Uhlman (AC) beat Wood (JayCo) in a very close match.  Wood also pinned Corkwell (Bluffton).  Curtis (JayCo) looked tough both days.

  7. Reiley and Wood have looked really good so far in the early season.  Even though Reiley came up through the SA ranks and now goes to JayCo, the rest of the good group from East Jay over the past few years is really showing off the (dare I say "hidden") talent.  They also have a great group of girls wrestling too.

Either way, Sectional and Regional will be fun with that group all mashed in to two/three weight classes.  Add in the other young kids from surrounding schools there should be some great competition.  Depending on where some of our kids fall in from AC towards the end of January, our Regional at JayCo will put some really tough kids through to FWSS that could show up as a 3rd or 4th seed, yet still wrestle through.

Just so you know, they Heritage Volleyball coach has a 2x state qualifier son, but I'd like to keep him at AC for our youth program. They are family to me, so I'm a bit biased. I'm still mad that our AD chose not to hire her for the AC Volleyball position. Heritage & Woodlan have always been different than the rest of the conference when it came to wrestling. I'm afraid SW is going to head back in that direction.

I used to work with her years ago.  Hell of a strong willed lady and great family.

Just a big technique gap from the Bellmont line up to the AC lineup. Bellmont has kids who wrestle most of the year, where as AC just doesn't have as many. That will most likely not change ever. It's not anything coaching wise, it's just the difference in school sizes and communities placing their focus on different areas. I think it was summed up the best on the webcast, that you can breathe a sigh of relief that it was respectable for AC and don't have to worry about Bellmont until sectional time. Since the class wrestling has started, the goal for AC is to try to win the 1A team state dual and hopefully get 1 or 2 if not more down to Indy Friday night. Bellmont is similar in trying to win the 2A team state, but they want to get 5-8 to Indy Friday night. They long for the days of single class wrestling and trying to compete against Cathedral & Mater Dei. Though, I think those days may have passed them bye just do to the focus of the bigger Indy schools & Hendricks county on the sport.

I know I know.  I still believe if our younger kids stick with wrestling and take part in the summer camps we'll surprise Bellmont in a couple years.  We have some young studs coming up.  It's up to them to want to keep up that hard work to compete against the 5 or so families that Bellmont lives by.

AC needs to retain more of the youth and seems to be doing it more now. The big difference is Bellmont has always been wrestling first and then other sports, while AC has been football first and then wrestling. Normally Bellmont's football seasons are over weeks prior to AC's. Only 2 weeks this year difference, but that's big in conditioning aspect for wrestling. Football conditioning is not the same as wrestling. As long as this is an early season dual unlike the previous Christmas time, that advantage may go to Bellmont. Especially when Bellmont wrestlers don't always make up much of a football roster, while AC & SA wrestling clubs are mostly football players.

I don't even think we can discuss the Bellmont football program without a few LOL's.  Other than a few years a decade or so ago (the great class of DFL kids after that program got started) they've been an after thought.  I've told my wife many times watching Bellmont play today is even more old school than watching old tapes of football when I played 40 years ago.

Bellmont wrestling has lived off the great families of wrestling from that community.  And they'll continue to do so.  I still firmly believe we'll continue to close that gap in the next couple of years.
