How do you know what Sectionals are A, B, C, etc?

You have to figure out which other sectional feeds in to your same regional.

    Sectionals are here:  https://ihsaa.org/Sports/Boys/Wrestling/2019-20/State-Tournament#40232448-sectionals

    Regionals are here:  https://ihsaa.org/Sports/Boys/Wrestling/2019-20/State-Tournament#40232449-regionals

Then go to trackwrestling to see how the other sectional turned out per weight class you are interested in.   THeir number 1 takes on your number 4, Their number 2 takes on your number 3, etc...

Or you can wait until Tuesday.

  2. Fishers and Southport were both at Hurrle on 11/23 and Fishers did finish ahead of Southport in points, although it is true that the two teams did not meet at every weight class.

On the other hand, Southport did win more of the head-to-head matches where they did wrestle.

Sounds like a great dual!  We could settle this at Bloomington South on Saturday! 😎  Rumor has it there are only three schools competing.

The main thing I did when first took over at MV was to recruit heavily from the football team, I was there anyway. Then would just stand in the halls and talk to any kid I could and tell them how wrestling could benefit them. I remember seeing a young man running down the hallway, he looked to be around 100lbs and we needed a 106. He was a soccer player, so told him he could spend his winter upstairs with us. He has told us coaches that he is more aggressive on the soccer field and has much more confidence in life.

Dave setting up the our dual to be televised has been a huge bonus. We have had lots of kids tell us how cool that was and asked if we would be doing it again. I am hoping to get Dave and PH back on the screen this coming year, and possibly another dual when we get our schedule finalized. (We need a couple duals if anybody is interested). We have discussed trying to use the auditorium, football field (weather permitting), the schools new Performance enhancement center basically anything to create interest. Randal Hayes has came up with great intro music for our duals that the kids love. We have thrown free t-shirts into the crowd just to fill as many seats as possible. As Dave said, anything to let your kids know that you are putting in the effort to make this as fun as possible.

I recall going to a Mt. Vernon Jr. High dual (it was either 4 or 5 years ago).  My first thought was where the heck is this school in the middle of nowhere, and then it quickly became "how are all of these kids so damn good"?     While our kids were goofing off on the mat during warm ups, all of a sudden the lights dimmed and they played "My House" by Flo Rida overhead, and the MV kids came out circling our boys on the mat.   Needless to say I was thoroughly impressed with the entire program, even if we got our tail handed to us.

who you got if it happens?  Rematch from earlier in the year.

While they are both amazing to watch, experience has to count for something.    Moran is a senior, former State Champion, and already beat Zeke earlier this year.

    I'll take Moran at -185; who's covering?

  5. Nice Job.  And THANK YOU for putting the ranking# off to the side of the wrestlers names!   During the broadcast on Sunday they did not include the actual rank.  I initially thought it was because the rankings may not be officially endorsed by the IHSAA, but Rakestraw and Goebel kept referring to the rankings over and over again.

I really think if they would just include the ranking off to the side of their names (like they do in NCAA), it would make the pairings presentation make a lot more sense -- especially to someone who is not otherwise familiar with the wrestlers by name.

The proof is in the results year after year -- you all put a lot of time into assigning a rank to a wrestler, and for the most part you are usually spot on.

So back to my earlier question..Can the IHSAA still decide to suspend all at this late in the game?   Or the decision is final they just forfeit wins... any thoughts...

I know someone has a rule book....let’s here it.  I thought it was something like ‘if an official sees the use of such suits, that wrestler is out of that tournament, even if they observe it hours before the dual begins.’  While no official observed it here, self reporting should not be discouraged (even if it was under 19 separate/isolated situations).   From the loose facts we’ve heard, Carmel has done just that.   The boys lost the “win”, so they won’t be able to tell a college recruiter they won 120 matches - that’s not insignificant.

If the use of such suits is in fact so agreguous of a safety violation that use of such suits should get you DQ’d from the state series, then the IHSAA is free to implement that going forward — but not retroactively.    Let’s have the safety conversation of this separate from the technical rule violation of using them

Someone at Carmel did do the right thing by self reporting, and they should not be punished more harshly because of it.  (Plus, we don’t wanna get uninvited to the great RTC program they run 😬). No question in my mind those boys should be permitted to wrestle.

Not only does the records change for the Carmel wrestlers, but could it add wins to the wrestlers they had to forfeit against? This could mean that someone they had beat and now have to forfeit to, they will have a better record now and could’ve been the difference in getting a higher seed at sectionals if they lost out on it by winning percentage? Unlikely but could happen.

Y2 addressed that scenario above.   The wins/losses will change, but the seeds won't change -- nor should they.

As a coach when doing seeding if you put a legitimate top kid lower you will hurt your kid more than you think will help them. Making them unseeded means they will draw into the top 1 or 2 seed early and thus "capturing" that seed and then knocking a top seed to the consolations earlier than expected.

That is a fair point.     The Patriots didn't win because the balls were underinflated and the Carmel doesn't dominate because they wore sweat suits.  They just both happen to be elite teams and fun to take a jab at sometimes.   They will bounce back from this.

  9. "forced to forfeit matches throughout 19 different competitions during the season"

Does that mean it happened on 19 separate occasions (as in repeat violations), or that Carmel found out about 19 incidents all at once and then self reported?

C'mon, Man!   someone needs to write "no details" next to this story like dual results.

The IHSAA has complete control over the brackets release.

Which is fair; however, it does not make sense to have some sectional's release their info today (like Castle's is) and some with a posted 'release info to public' on Friday.

  11. Trackwrestling sorta has that feature for most schools, but it is cumbersome and incomplete in most cases.  From the main menu search ‘seasons’ then select 2018/2019 high school boys.  Then you can search by team name.    You can see roster, schedule, and individual matches.

I get your points.  A few points I'd like to mention as a Coach:

    1.  10 pounds is not the same on some kids as it is others.  A 116 pound kid losing 10 pounds to get to 106 is typically different than a 230 pound kid dropping to 220.

Thank you for saying that.  To have a meaningful discussion about the topic, it only makes sense to talk about it in terms of percentages rather than pounds.  Just like the two pound 'growth allowance' given to the kids after the first of the year.   I have no problem with the concept, but do think giving a #106 an almost 2% allowance while giving the heavyweight .6% allowance seems silly.

I have watched my wrestler over the past two months lose nearly 7% body weight by doing absolutely nothing other than conditioning with the pre-season & club team 5 days a week, and cutting out the 4 x eggos lathered in thick peanut butter for breakfast.

In my rankings I didn't include incoming freshman because I don't have the knowledge yet of their skill base. But,

Sig40 made a reply on the post about who’s the best middle school wrestlers (Post was made last year, so all 8th graders on the list are freshman now), and the only freshman on that list that I saw that was from the FW Semi-State was Preston Teusch. He was ranked 19 as seen below-

    19. Preston Teusch--8th grade--Huntington--90--(106)

(2X Middle School State Champ, 5-2 at Middle School Nat Duals, Dominate the Dells Champ, NUWAY national champ, Indy National Champ)

End Note- I do guarantee that there are some freshman that could make an impact that aren’t on that list, but I don’t know where to find them or who they are.

The results on Track from the 2017 Middle School State meet is a good place to look but it is not perfect.  The 'hometown' of the kids is usually listed as the local club not the middle school, so it becomes challenging to figure out which club will likely feed into a particular high school for those top finishers. Also, although I presume the most are 8th graders, some will be 6th or 7th and I don't see a way to differentiate from Track's results page.

  14. Mendez sure seems like the real deal .   I saw his name on the pre-season opener in September which got me thinking...

The Preseason Opener seems to always have a talented group of wrestlers in general.   Do we know if a 7th or 8th grader has won the whole thing in the past?    If Mendez is a true #109 he has to be a frontrunner.

  15. Perhaps not; however, don't you want to have 16-guys at Semi-State (and State for that matter) to make the bracket work out?   Are you proposing you take only the top three from each regional?  Seems like that would be problematic when drawing brackets at semi-state where there are an odd number of feeder sectionals.     Assuming your math is correct...of the folks you are proposing to exclude, 44% were competitive (they did not get pinned), and 5.4% (3 out of 56) beat the number one guy!

  16. Ben Dalton dominated the Cadet #94 group, just like he did the Middle School State in its comparable weight class.  I'm calling it now, if he can put on a few more pounds to get closer to 106, he will be wrestling in the High School State Finals next year, and is my early pick for the 106 champion.  Congratulations Ben.

  17. but I think he has Crushed the School Record for Takedowns in the season .

Well, both of those figures are sort of misleading.   If you take the guy down 13 times and cut him loose 13 times you are padding your takedown numbers while appearing to give away the farm on escapes.  In reality, it is just a technical superiority that, quite frankly, is pretty amazing to watch.
