What a great room last night for our first RTC of 2017!

We had 40+ kids (and 10 coaches) in the room getting after it!  It was especially awesome to see the seniors (Jerde, Webster, Jagow, Pecoraro, etc) in the room still training like the state tourney series was next weekend.

We told the kids that some people enjoy watching the symphony, or looking at fine art....I could watch this room wrestle every day.  The group of Webster, Eiteljorge, Allred, Penola, Welch, The Chad, etc was just entertaining to see!

Thanks to Coach Williams for putting us through a good drill and showing some great finishes to leg attack.  Also, thanks to Gil Journey for coming by!

    You wanna know what's odd?

A mom coming on this thread and trying to tout her kid as one of the most dominant big men ever in such a passive aggressive way. Seriously, this is coming from someone with plenty of his own detractors here. And then the most awesome display of gross misconduct by trying to play the victim is your response when called out. I'll put it in easy to understand terms for you: Parris and Gelen top 1% of wrestlers period. There's absolutely no shame in being a top 10% wrestler. I don't see Ellis mom and or dad on here lobbying for Evan do you? See the difference? That's why you are taken to task, it has nothing to do with Gunnar. Your behavior here today is what causes targets to be placed on backs of teams and wrestlers.

Mattingly has looked stellar this season, taking out Previous number one Andrew Black during the Connersville tournament. Luhmann has put up an impressive freshman wrestling Hse’s tough schedule. Eldred and Luhmann have been back and forth this season, meeting at the North Central invite and the Conference tournament. Padgett has a solid record, but hasn’t been tested yet because of a weaker schedule. Look for him to shock some people this postseason.

A returning semistate qualifier, Hutson is looking to put an exclamation point on his senior campaign. Talon Surber might have something to say about that, having wrestled to a 22-10 record. Holman owns the previous match against Simone, but don’t count him out.

Pecararo beat Forbes in the last match, but it was close. I fully expect this one to be even closer. Ethan Greene is having a great senior campaign, the semi with Forbes will be a fiesta. McQuinn looks good for 4th place.

Jerde looks like the top dog here, but Garcia has been surging lately. He owns a win over Strueder and is a conference champion. Strueder is having a bit of a down year, but he has been to Bankers Life. Gobeyn could give Strueder a tough time in the third and fourth place match.

Kody Wagoner has had a solid year and I think he’ll make it far this postseason. Freestone could give him some trouble in the finals. Tyler Wagner has been impressive so far this season winning the North Mont. Holiday Classic as a freshman. Robinson is a returning semistate qualifier and regional finalist.

It’s a little bit surprising to me that Sauder got the top seed with a 13-12 record, while Delph gets the second seed with a 31-3 record. I would assume that strength of schedule had a factor in this decision. I look for Delph to take the title, and for Banks to knock off Sauder. Wilbrandt swoops in and nabs a ticket to regionals.

Look for the real battle to be for 2nd-4th place. Eiteljorge has the sectional championship on lock. Wagner could very well wrestle higher than his seed and make the finals. He has a win over the four seed Bischoff. Gobeyn is having a great junior campaign and has his eyes set on semistate.

Quite a drop off of talent after the top 4 seeds, look for all of these wrestlers to move on. I expect that Wertz is improving exponentially practicing with Penola in the room. Miller and Davis will battle for a spot in the finals. Heininger moves on as the fourth seed.

Wow this weight’s final match will be a battle. Penola and Mazero will be worth the price of admission. Don’t let Mazero’s record mistake you, he is just as much in this match as Penola is. That aside, Penola is the favorite. I expect Jones of Lebanon will beat Hart of Carmel in the 3rd/4th place match.

Back to back weights in which the finals match is a real scrap. Stambaugh comes in to the weekend undefeated, however Jessop might have something to say about that. He recently wrestled Number 1 Nathan Walton to an 8-6 decision. I think that Hill will beat sharp due to practicing with Penola. Iron sharpens iron.

One great wrestler will not be moving on this weekend. Burris and Williams second round could help decide the team race. Jagow looks to be the top dog here, coming in with a 33-1 record. I think that Burris wrestles above his seed, moving on to regionals. Jagow will claim the title over Williamson and Hoffman will punch his ticket.

McClaine comes in to sectionals with a flawless 33-0 record. With that being said, I think that Myren beats him. Matches between them these past two years have been close decisions skewing in McClaine’s favor. I look for Myren to break the curse this weekend. Gleason will defeat Boleman in the 3rd/4th place match.

Dollens, a returning state-qualifier is not the favorite? That is the case. Rising sophomore Crae Kunkleman recently wrestled him to a 2-0 decision. He also recently notched wins over semistate qualifier Kevin Pierce, and semistate ranked Jack Williams. Jack should be able to beat Pence for 3rd place. The finals, I predict will go into utb where Crae will win.

meiteljorge reacted to Y2CJ41 in Article: #WrestlingWednesday: Penola makes his mark after impressive Al Smith
    By JEREMY HINES
    Thehines7@gmail.com

Two years ago Thomas Penola didn’t crack Zionsville’s varsity lineup. Last year he had a mediocre season, going 24-13. A week ago he entered the prestigious Al Smith Classic as an unranked, unseeded junior competing in arguably the toughest weight class in the tournament.

Now, just a week later, Penola’s career has taken a drastic turn. He won the Al Smith at 170 pounds, beating four ranked wrestlers in the process. When the new state rankings came out this week, Penola had one of the biggest jumps in the ranking’s history. He went from not being in the top 16, to his current rank of No. 3.

“I was really surprised when I saw the rankings,” Penola said. “I didn’t know what to expect. I had beaten some good guys at the Al Smith, but I generally don’t even look at rankings. I just listen to my coaches and go out and wrestle.”

Penola’s coaches are perhaps the ones surprised the least about his sudden rise into the state’s wrestling spotlight.

“Thomas has had a great year,” Zionsville coach Jared Williams said. “We knew going into the Al Smith, with the competition that was going to be there at that weight, that we’d have a chance to see where he stood. I thought he could win it. I really thought that, going in, he’s there with anyone.”

Penola knocked off No. 16 ranked Jordan Rader (14-2) in the opening round of the Al Smith. He later defeated Mike Edwards (10-5), No. 10 ranked Jared Swank (19-2), No. 9 ranked Tavonte Malone (24-1) and No. 5-ranked Zack Fattore (15-2) to win the championship.

Penola is currently 20-1 on the season. Both he, and his coaches, point to his vigorous off-season training as the reason for his success this season.

“For me, the biggest difference was that I stopped playing football and focused on wrestling,” Penola said. “The coaches I have been working with are great. They helped me focus on working on my feet. I went to camps, I worked out at CIA. I got to wrestle some guys that have really pushed me. Before this summer my weakness was wrestling on my feet. Now, I’d say, it’s my biggest strength.”

Coach Williams credits Penola’s work ethic and desire for the turnaround.

“I really thought last year that he would make a big jump,” Williams said. “I don’t think quitting football really had anything to do with it other than he came into our season healthy. He had one of his knees worked on last year and missed all of freestyle and folkstyle season. He felt behind and really wanted to focus on wrestling during the fall. I wouldn’t encourage anyone to stop playing football. If you want to make a big jump, it can happen in the spring and summer.

“Thomas is hyper focused, and that’s why he is where he is today.”

This year Penola’s goal is to place high at the state meet. He acknowledged that it won’t come easy. He is focusing on each match he wrestles and knows he can’t get to the point where he overlooks anyone.

“I see what happens with him in the room,” Williams said. “I can feel it when I wrestle with him. He’s up there with anyone. He has that state-placing potential. But we’ve talked, and he has a lot of things that have to improve for him to be in a state title conversation. But he’s going the things he needs to do.

“He’s as coachable as any person I’ve ever had. He takes in everything we, as a coaching staff, tell him. If we say we need something to happen, he’ll do everything in his power to make it happen. He does everything right, from nutrition, to rest to working hard in the weight room. He’s a leader for our team. And, the reason he loves wrestling is because he knows it’s a sport that rewards those that work the hardest.”

Penola also credits having teammates that push him in the room as a reason for his success.

“Guys like Sam Gobeyn, Matt Wertz and Josue Hill all have the same mind set and are improving because of their work and the way they push each other,” Williams said.

Outside of wrestling Penola loves to hang out with his family, which includes two sisters and five brothers. He enjoys watching football and wrestling. And, he says, he loves eating when it isn’t wrestling season.

No big upsets thus far, BUT this Carmel freshman Eric Hiestand is a stud-in-the-making. Lost 17-12 to Austin Holmes, but was absolutely in the match and took him down numerous times with quick, clean singles. He's got quite a build, too, for a freshman, plus that last name is familiar. Watch out
