  1. Triton wrestler, Cameron Scarberry was killed in a single vehicle automobile accident on Sunday. He was also a football player and this info has been going around the football forums, but I thought I would also post it here. Cam was a 16 year old junior who wrestled varsity for Triton last year at 195. He was a two-way starter on the football team at guard and LB. If you think about it, say a prayer for the Triton community as we mourn this loss. As you can imagine, at a school of 300 kids this hits everyone pretty hard.
  2. My son was a sectional champion as a senior in 2015. He's now a college student in central Indiana and is in his second year as an official. Admittedly, it's difficult for him to get matches with his limited experience, but it is a great source of income for college kids, if they can work matches into their schedules! This past weekend he was fortunate to be one of 4 officials at a conference meet in northern Indiana. I'm biased of course, but I think he did an excellent job! One of the coaches told me he thought my son was the second best official at the meet! More kids like him need to be encouraged to jump into the sport as officials. It really can be quite beneficial financially for college kids in particular. And it can help to build the number of younger officials in the sport.
  3. Thanks for the nice write-up on the Trojans! It's amazing how far the program has come under the leadership of Coach Arveson and Coach Brown! It wasn't all that long ago that this squad did not win a dual meet all season (2010). So to see them compete in back-to-back Team State duals is pretty exciting. When you consider that it takes 10% of the boys in the entire school just to field a complete wrestling team, having the success they've had in the last couple of years speaks volumes to the dedication and leadership of this coaching staff! (And to their ability to recruit!) The kids respect them and want to make them proud! My son was one of the wrestlers in the 2015 class, so I know how hard they worked at trying to make each other better so the team could succeed. I know getting in invite to team state was one of their goals, and though they didn't get to wrestle there themselves, that class took pride in leading the underclassmen to reach that goal. Triton may not finish at the top of 1A this year, but they have a shot at finishing in the middle of the 1A pack in Ft. Wayne. That in itself would be quite an accomplishment and speak volumes about these kids and their coaches.
  4. Gage Waddle from Triton graduated last year (Spring 2016).
  5. Interesting that Culver Academy and Triton are the automatic qualifiers from the EC semi-state in 2A & 1A, yet have rather low team scores. These two teams also come from the same sectional (Plymouth). What does that say about the quality - or lack of quality - for the Plymouth sectional and Rochester regional? Is that an indication of the difficulty of smaller schools to advance wrestlers in that sectional and regional? Or are all the smaller teams in that quadrant just bad?
  6. If I'm reading this correctly, Triton has now secured the automatic bid for the 1A team from the East Chicago SS. Delphi would be second, but I don't think they can earn enough points to catch Triton. Is that correct?
  7. He lost to Pokorney and Krause from Knox, both at 170.
  8. Just wondering if anyone thinks Waddle has any chance to knock off Kasch in 160 ticket round? Waddle hasn't wrestled the competition of some others, but was stuck in a regional with Malone and Swank, so had a tough go of it there. He lost a 7-3 decision to Malone in the semi final at Rochester. Has anyone seen them both that could throw out an opinion?
  9. It seems like it happens regularly in Rochester with the Mishawaka sectional bringing some deep weight classes into the regional. Last year Mishawaka swept 152, and if I had to guess I would say they could do the same at 106 this year. Penrod from Riley over Penrose of CMA is a distinct possibility, and with that would likely come the sweep.
  10. Anyone want to weigh in on the Plymouth Sectional? Any shoe-ins besides Hatch (138) and Rodriguez (145)? I think Waddle is no brainer at 160, and Splix at 182. And I think McBee will clean up at 285. There should be some good ones though! Including 152 with Calhoun and Bollenbacher. Who wins the team title this year? Rochester is down. I see a four team race with Plymouth, Bremen, Triton and CMA. Probably have to give the nod to Plymouth. I've got Plymouth with 3 champions, Triton, Bremen, Culver, and Caston with two each. Rochester, Warsaw and Wawasee with the other three. But I'm guessing CMA will have a lot of guys score, and of course Caston and Culver aren't in the running for the team title.
  11. Pretty proud of my Triton team! The smallest school in the state to take a full team into the sectional! On top of that we also have a ranked 1A boys basketball team! I figure we have close to 35% of the boys in our high school participating in a winter sport. Pretty dang good!
  12. I don't know anything about Pioneer wrestling per se, but I was surprised by how poorly some of the best football schools did on the mat! I have thought that football and wrestling success often go hand-in-hand, but in the HNAC this year the best football schools finished toward the bottom of the wrestling conference (Pioneer and North Judson particularly). And two of the three worst football schools finished 1st and 2nd in wrestling (Triton and West Central)! LaVille was the only school that did really well in both this year.
  13. Congratulations to the Triton Trojans who won the inaugural HNAC conference meet on Saturday! West Central was second, LaVille third and Knox fourth in what was essentially a four horse race. The other teams didn't field enough wrestlers to compete for the title, though a couple had champions. Triton had two champions in Malachi Greene at 120 and Gage Waddle at 160. Bryce Swihart finished second at 113 and we had several thirds. Everyone on the Triton roster placed to secure the team win. Tristan Rodriquez from Culver was HNAC wrestler of the year, and Coaches Brown and Arveson from Triton were named coaches of the year for the conference. Quite an honor for those two as they were also named coaches of the year last year in the NSC's final season!
  14. Yes, Triton and LaVille did wrestle twice in 3 days. Those scores are correct.
  15. A little disappointed that Triton didn't get a little love in the rankings this week! Our loss to Knightstown was closer than Eastern Hancock and our win over Centerville was bigger. But we'll have a chance to prove ourselves in a dual with LaVille next week. It should be a good one! Loved being a part of the state meet on Saturday. It was a special event for our kids with a big sendoff including police escorts going 20 miles down the road! Hoping to make it back next year!
  16. I would say Knightstown was pushed by Triton. Came down to the last match. But AC is better across all weights. Looks to be like AC will get another shot to knock off PH.
  17. No one has mentioned cutting weight in order to gain a spot on the varsity roster. It may not be a big deal in large schools, but in smaller schools this is reality. A wrestler who is not good enough to earn the varsity spot at this natural weight may be able to cut one class and fill an empty space or win a spot. Let's not gloss over this and say it doesn't happen. All of your talk assumes your child is good enough to wrestle any weight he wants to. That's just not the case all of the time.
  18. From the DOE website, it appears that the high school enrollments (grades 9-12) of all students in Indiana is around 302,000 kids. That means that - on average - a school would need to have about 1.350 kids in grades 9-12 in order to have a state qualifying wrestler. So - all things being equal - Penn should have about 2.5 kids qualify each year, and it should take a school like Triton about 4.5 years to get a qualifier.
  19. Yes, I completely agree. That's why I said they have more hurdles to overcome. It's still an individual accomplishment though, and there are ways to overcome those obstacles if the desire is there. Note, however, that I don't feel the same way about team sports. I'm all for classed basketball, football, volleyball, etc.
  20. I'm sorry, I have not read through the entire thread, so I may be repeating something here. Coming from a small school, I would still fall on the side of a single individual tournament and one champion at each weight class. While I agree that a kid from a small school will have more hurdles to overcome to make it to the podium, it is still an individual sport and the number of kids in your school ultimately does not limit an individual's ability to become a state champion. On the other hand, I would love to see team champions determined by class. It may require reassigning sectionals, but why not award a 1A and a 2A sectional champion at each site? Same for regional, semi-state and state. School size definitely does have a bearing on team results, so in my mind that makes sense. And it's pretty simple to do. Just make sure that each sectional site has at least 4 1A schools in it and you're set for the remainder of the tournament. Two team champions at each venue each week. It's simple and it gives the small school teams a genuine shot at a title.
  21. Triton was also in Valpo for the night.
  22. Great honor for all Triton coaches! Matt Arveson and Ron Brown both deserve recognition for guiding this year's team to some awesome accomplishments! And of course Coaches Belin and Thompson! You guys are all great! Edit: Matt Arveson is the official head coach of the Trojans. I was mistaken in this post earlier. My apologies to Coach Arv!
  23. So how do you determine which first round loser in a category 5 regional gets semi-state points?
  24. Ahhh. Ok, I can buy that. I wasn't sure how that regional rating system worked, but that makes sense.
  25. I get that. Triton has 4 wrestlers left. Two are seniors, so only 2 can score points at SS. So we have 8 available points. But something doesn't add up with a few of these schools.
