  1. We are back to the work harder mentally. Why are kids leaving small schools to chase their wrestling goals? Easy better facilities, coaches, workout partners and support from within. It's easy to say what needs to be done to have success. Go get a job at a small school and see. If it is that easy to have small school success with all this hard work why aren't more coaches trying. How many 500 or less are having state tournament success? Of those how many are within 30 minutes of a high end Academies. The Fort Wrestling facility is a blessing for us. It going to make a difference for us.
  2. Kids at small schools can train all summer long at various places. The issue is when season starts most go backwards. With limited or no solid practice partners it's hard to keep up. That's one of two things. Look at the list of coaches at these schools. Look at the move ins at these large schools and more dominant teams. I been at this for along time. It would be awesome to coach under the lights. But to spend 30 plus years coaching my butt off is a slap in the face and my former wrestlers.
  3. I was just wondering what the the overall number was. He had to look at all the matches. That would be the most intriguing number.
  4. So what's the overall number of wins and loses? I don't think 800 would fit into small school category in my opinion.
  5. Then let's not talk about realignment for the state tournament. Lets go back a few years when small schools were told to just work harder. Seems like some others need to work harder to beat the kids that are in front of them.
  6. Why not now? It's the perfect time look at the disparity in our sport. If we had a 2 class system the Finals wouldn't change hardly at all. Then we have 224 more kids still wrestling.
  7. Been on 3 phones and 1 computer and nothing. What a joke.
  8. That would be awsome. Send them north and eliminate 50 percent of the small school kids that qualify for state. That just what we need. If they want to go through the Ft Wayne semi-state move to a school up here. Problem solved. There are plenty of schools with open weight classes.
  9. I agree completely. But up here in the Northeast corner Academies are limited. As was stated earlier a 20 minute drive around the loop of Indy any given night you have a competitive room available. Hopefully we can get the northern kids to get together at the Fort this off season. Ft Wayne is getting better at all ages.
  10. There have been many discussions about class wrestling. The IHSAA would have to decide to grow sport of wrestling for all a schools big or small first. I've coached at a small school for 33 years. Maybe 10 of those years I was able to fill 12-14 weight classes. The gap keeps getting larger for our kids that don't wrestle year around.
  11. Yes Rochester wrestles small schools. They are at the top of the 1a class in size also. People are afraid to talk about the size of schools and a 2 or 3 class individual tournament. This year shows more than ever the need for it.
  12. We don't want to talkabout school size. Everyone has the same opportunities to be a elite wrestler. Just look at the number of kids that advanced from small schools.
  13. Thank you for the kind words Coach. I am extremely humbled and honored.
  14. These 10 schools alone have as many students as the schoolsi in the FW semi state combined.
  15. That said CN wrestler lost a close match in the ticket round last year.
  16. That's the point us small school coaches are trying to make. Kids at all schools want to work hard and have fun. If they can have that chance at success in a state tournament they will be more motivated. Why have any class sports? Watch FB numbers and teams disappear. Are kids going to play if they have to play CG or WC to have post season success? No! But All kids have the same opportunities to succeed no matter what school they attend or sports they are competing right.
  17. So kids at small schools should just be happy with getting to semi state or being a state qualifier. I'll describe a couple senerios. A young boy started wrestling in 2nd grade. Over the next 6 years he wrestled tournaments in Michigan,Ohio,Tennessee,Illinois with lots of success. Coming into HS he had won multiple iswa, hyway and other titles. His family obviously traveled and put the time in. Every loss he had thru Jr high and high school was to state qualifiers and place finishers. Now he is giving back all that he learned over those years and is a big reasons a particular school up here is having success right now.. We had a unbelievable group of kids in the program at that time 9 state appearances and 2 medals. But your saying they should be happy with just getting there. Obviously you have never had to coach at a small school. We don't have the luxury of having multiple coaches at all 3 levels. If anyone wants another opinion on this ask a Hall of Fame coach Cale Hoover about big school small school advantages.
  18. It's evan harder to match the coaching staff at the HS level let alone club coaches. In the Indy area It's alot easier to get kids every night. 30 or 40 minutes you can find all the competition and high end instruction you can ask for. At least people have admitted the large schools do have an advantage over small schools.
  19. Yes I know of all of these. Been doing this awhile. Have had kids wrestle at many schools in Northern IN. Those high end Academies rooms probably had most of the Medals this year. Andy is doing a great service for the area. It's not an overnight turn around. We can beat each other up every night of the week up here. Still is not even close to wrestling Champs and place finishers every day.
  20. People are saying everyone has the same opportunities to be Champs or placing at state. So here in rural Churubusco our kids can work out CIA Red Cobra Contenders on any given day of the week. That's the difference. Not many parents are driving 5 hours on a week night to get that experience. It's funny having a close friend that coached a large school. It's the small scool coaches that want that one opportunity to succeed every 4-5 years. Instead of possibly a every year opportunity.
  21. How about a spreadsheet of qualifiers and place finishers for each semi state bye class? I'm sure Joe already has it.
  22. How many of the remaining 62 qualifiers are from the Fort Wayne semi-state? We don't have the big power schools to compete against. That number would definitely be a lot smaller. The small schools in the other semi-states are the ones it's hurting the most.
  23. Most people won't ever understand small school athletics. It's easy to say just work harder. I've been coaching small schools for 33 years. It's been a struggle for most of them. We don't have the same opportunities as big schools. The lack of facilities, multiple coaches and practice partners are the biggest hurdles we struggle with.
  24. Absolutely true let the team and or wrestlers get 3-4 tickets per wrestler. Assigned seats for them would be awsome. They should all be in lower seats.
  25. It would be interesting to know how many schools in general have lay coaches. Not many kids are going the education route for their future. Let alone giving back to the sport bye coaching. Look at all the former studs they all go to schools that are already successful. So that leaves us old guys to try and manage our own family plus work outside of the school to keep a school from dropping a struggling program with 10-15 kids on a good year.
