  1. I get that practice partners do make a difference. But with the presence of elite wrestling clubs & the extensive out of season tournaments that these kids can choose to participate in, kids from small schools have ample opportunities to get better. You don't become a state quality wrestler these days by only wrestling in season. But yes, in season they are limited to the partners they have at their school.
  2. Because the large school has many more athletes to pull from. That is why large schools have a huge advantage from a team standpoint. But it doesn't keep that small school from producing that one or two really good individuals. Come on Y2, I know you are smart enough to understand the concept. Larger populations are going to produce more elite athletes. So the best 14 wrestlers from a large school normally should form a better team than the best 14 from a small school as long as everything else is equivalent. But coaching, tradition & overall program strength can help some small schools out perform some larger ones.
  3. Why are you sure "they got better"? Is it not possible that those programs would be just as tough if Illinois had single class wrestling?
  4. The numbers you yourself have supplied in the past have shown that the number of State qualifiers & Champs has closely followed the percentages of the respective enrollments. That is what should be expected. To expect small schools to produce the same number of elite athletes as the larger schools is nonsensical. A school with 1,000 students should be expected to produce 10 times the elite athletes that a school with 100 students does. That is why large schools have a distinct advantage in team sports. If you want to argue that class wrestling will help grow the sport then OK. I'm not sure it will but I can at least understand why it might. But when you argue that individuals from large schools have an advantage over individuals from small schools, there is no logic or evidence that supports it.
  5. Shout to Floyd Central for taking home the 3A title, taking down both the #1 & #2 ranked teams. I saw this coming only after their showing at the MD Classic.
  6. If someone gives an explanation then I can buy that. But when all a person posts is "Won't Happen", it comes off as disrespectful. It doesn't matter how he meant it &/or what inside info he has. It only matters how it is taken by others, most importantly how it is perceived by the kid &/or his parents who might be on here. If you don't understand that, then I can't help you. These are HS kids we are talking about on this board. It would behoove the adults on here to remember that.
  7. You just keep telling yourself that you didn't just dis a HS kid. You can hide behind the thought that you are just supporting someone else, but...
  8. Biggest surprise for me was just how good Floyd Central is as a team. I was shocked to see that they have 3 dual losses on the season. But all are to high quality teams - Avon, Cathedral & Warren Central. Look for them to be tough at Team State.
  9. Well Cole Matthews is a formidable opponent & lot better than his ranking & record this year might indicate. He spent a portion of last year ranked #1 at 141. Matthews is pretty much a defensive wrestler who rarely gets bonus point wins but manages to win a vast majority of his matches. Jesse controlled the pace the entire match but couldn't break through Matthews defense. He escaped quickly in the second period & then rode Matthews for most of the 3rd. Unfortunately, he got a little lackadaisical at the end & gave up the last second TD. I'd bet good money Jesse gets him if they meet again.
  10. Awesome & well deserved. Mendez is off to a fantastic start this year & has looked dominate thus far. Not that he didn't look good last year, but he seems to have really taken his game to another level this year.
  11. Maybe I'm just to cautious but it seems to me that if the reason to not wrestle in a dual is because making weight on multiple days in a week is too tough then maybe that individual isn't at the correct weight class. But I have never been a fan of big weight cuts. If it is a chore for an individual to make a weight then it is likely not healthy for that individual. Perhaps they were simply allowing another individual a chance. I hope that is the case rather than the weight cut being too tough twice in a couple of days thought.
  12. Jesse is now 11-0 on the season after winning the CKLV Invitational. He has scored bonus points in all but one of his matches. The other is a 5-2 win over #7 ranked Ryan Jack in the CKLV finals. FYI, he also got a 11-3 MD over #4 ranked Brock Hardy in the semifinals over the weekend. So far so good at 141.
  13. Yes Jesse was very impressive over the weekend, but the new scoring rules have made bonus points easier to come by. His match against Hardy would have been an 8-3 decision under the old scoring rules. Regardless, 141 seems to be a better weight for Jesse. I'm sure the experience he got last year is making a huge difference, but I can't help but think the weight cut last year might have hurt him some.
  14. Brands isn't necessarily upset about wrestlers being targeted. He is upset that the state of Iowa is the only place it is happening. And that the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation decided that this was something that needed to be investigated while other states are simply ignoring it. So the real question is, is the State of Iowa right in investigating college athletes or are the other states right to simply ignore it because they have bigger fish to fry? And thus leaving it to the NCAA to handle since it is their problem anyway. The NCAA is on record as stating that sports gambling is a big problem among college athletes. But is it a problem that state judicial systems need to worry about?
  15. I have nothing except that he didn't compete at the 'Battle at The Citadel'. But you likely knew that.
  16. Jesse Went 4-0 at the Clarion Open with 3 TF's & a Fall.
  17. After Day 2: O'Toole (74 kg), Brooks (86 kg) & Hendrickson (125 (kg) all win Gold. Cardenas (92 kg) wins Bronze but Chlebove (61 kg) was eliminated. Isaac Trumble (97 kg) will wrestle for Gold tomorrow & Doug Zapf (70 kg) will wrestle for Bronze. Cooper Flynn (57 kg) & Brock Hardy (65 kg) are in Repechage. Dustin Plott (79 kg) went 0-1 & is eliminated. USA leads the team race with 128 pts with Azerbaijan in 2nd with 72 pts. I would guess the team race is locked up but I don't know that for certain.
  18. The US had a nice day one at the U23 Worlds. They lead the team race with 60 points as O'Toole (74 kg), Brooks (86 kg) & Hendrickson (125 kg) all make the finals & will wrestle for Gold tomorrow. Plus Julian Chlebove (61 kg) & Jacob Cardenas (92 kg) both still have a shot at Bronze. Cooper Flynn (57 kg), Brock Hardy (65 kg), Doug Zapf (70 kg), Dustin Plott (79 kg), and Isaac Trumble (97 kg) all wrestle tomorrow.
  19. Well is Jesse more a natural 141 anyway? I think possibly. He wrestled 138 both his Junior & Senior years in HS. He is only older & more mature now. It's possible that 133 was a pretty decent cut for him last year. Plus, 133 is probably the tougher collegiate weight this year anyway with Vito & Fix at the top of the standings. Not that 141 is soft, but it doesn't have the pedigree at the top like 133 has.
  20. After some research, it does appear you are correct that she could have been pulled in, but unfortunately her opponent lost in the quarters & Kayla is indeed eliminated from medal contention.
  21. Sarah Hildebrandt wins her Bronze medal match!
  22. You could be right, but it is my understanding that you must first make the quarter finals to be pulled into repechage. That is why I asked if I am correct. I know maligned will know the answer. Are you sure that she is still eligible to be pulled into repechage when losing in the round of 16?
  23. You are 100% correct. I am happy for MIcic. But the other poster asked how cool is it the these Indiana wrestlers got to be a part of a World Championship team, and you replied ultra cool & then immediately mentioned Micic as the Indiana GOAT. But Micic was not part of the World Championship team. Your post comes close to insinuating that he was.
