SAN JOSE, CA (KGO/CNN) - A California high school wrestler is concerned his fellow athletes could pick up herpes during an upcoming state tournament.

Blake Flovin says he got infected during another wrestling competition last month.

He says he may have spread that infection to other wrestlers while he was practicing.

So he's calling on officials to postpone the wrestling tournament, scheduled for this weekend, until the incubation period is over.

"They need to be stopped from wrestling or the state tournament needs to be postponed," Blake Flovin, the high school wrestler, said. "So, just trying to prevent this disease from getting to other people."

State sports officials say they'll go ahead with the tournament, but doctors will be on hand.

They also say all wrestlers have to pass a skin inspection before competing.

Call me skeptical.  Thoughts anyone??

It's called Herpes Gladitorum(sp?), which falls into the same category as HSV1(Cold sores).  It was a topic on the coaches meeting this preseason.  Many doctors initially diagnose it as impetigo, which does no good because you'll get a medication for impetigo.  Herpes Gladitorum is a virus, so antibiotics do zero good!

I had a friend who got a mild for of herpes from his one year of wrestling. Every month or so they'd flare up, but he had a cream that can get rid of them pretty quickly. I haven't seen him in a couple years so I don't know if they still flare up or not.

Needless to say, that didn't really help kids who were on the fence about wrestling to come out...
