Team Medals

I think the fans should shower the floor of Banker's Life with the funds to pay for the medals during the ceremony.  We would of course allow Bobby to keep any extra funds for the additional cost of collecting the cash. An $8 cheeseburger or a medal for an athlete who busted his butt for his team.  I know what selection I would make.

I was part of the MD team that last won the  "old way" I was a Semi State qualifier. We received the trophy but I can't remember getting my medal. It might have been May before we got medals. MD does a big awards day thing where all the kids that get academic/ sports awards get recognized, on this day wrestling state rings are given out as well as runner up rings. I could be wrong but back in 1995 I do not believe we received any medals as a team from IHSAA it was all after the fact. We went down to the floor got our trophy had a picture and was escorted off the floor. The moment in the sun really wasn't given to us by IHSAA, but we had a heck of a party when we got back home!

Its a slap in the face to all the perry and yorktown kids who put in time and were not good enough to get to state. Its embaressing for all sports. If your team wins the entire varsity should be recognized and recieve a tangible thing to show thier accomplishments..swimming, track, wrestling all of em...it wasnt those kids alone who won the title it was the hardwork of all involved

I know in cross country the 7 runners all get a team medal, that includes 2 who did not count towards their team's score.  (The 8th alternate team member may also get a medal - I can't remember)  Cross country is a bit different that all of the team members get to participate at state regardless of their individual performance at sectionals, regionals, and semi state.  If the team moves on, then so does their worst varsity runner.

I'm curious what track does for their team medals.  My guess is that the starter of each event for the team champs and runner-up do not get a team medal because that would end up being a whole lot of medals for athletes who did not qualify for the state meet.

This all comes back to the IHSAA trying to treat all sports the same, when clearly every sport is different.  Blanket policies over all sports seem great for "fairness" but ultimately end up affecting each sport very differently.

In cross country the top 12 get medals. 7 for the runners and 5 for the alternates for the top 5 runners. To quickly look at the math there are 10 teams in the IHSAA football championships and 75 medals to each team. Thats 750 medals for football (375 for runner ups) and wrestling received 5 for their runner ups? At 5 dollars a piece they would be spending 3750 dollars on football medals and unable to spend (14 medals) 70 dollars on wrestling medals.

To quote John Boehner  "We have a spending issue, not a revenue issue"
