Did you know...

Did you  know that northern Indiana was originally part of Connecticut when the U.S. was founded.  Or that central and southern Indiana were originally part of Virginia.  It would sure would make our state championship a whole lot different.

Also, did you know the Indiana's first border with Michigan was moved north roughly 2 miles in the late 19th century.  Indiana, by federal decree, confiscated two additional miles of Michigan property all the way from Lake Michigan to Ohio.  That means students from the northern portions of certain school districts like South Bend Clay, Penn, Elkhart Memorial, etc., would be wrestling in Michigan's tournament this weekend and not in Indiana's.

I did a real quick Internet search and I can't find a reference to a two mile adjustment "late in the 19th century."  It appears that when Indiana became a state in 1816, its citizens asked Congress to move the northern border up ten miles from the original east west line established by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787.  Then Michigan Gov. Cass objected but Congress granted Indiana's request.  Indiana sought this adjustment to gain more access to Lake Michigan.  Two years later, Illinois asked for and got a 60 mile adjustment north and wound up with Chicago instead of Wisconsin.  Michigan later lost a territorial battle with Ohio over Toledo.

Wow, ten miles.  Just think how many current Northern Indiana teams could be enjoying class wrestling in Michigan right about now!   :o
