  1. I'll put it this way. Dake has had the most impressive collegiate wrestling career ever.
  2. Les Gutches also beat him in 2000:
  3. What a humble young man! I am totally impressed with the way he won his first state title.... Good for you, Gelen..... You earned it!
  4. Solid match for Jason! On the video it says Northwestern - UNA.... I am guessing that the UNA stands for unattached. In any case, I am really confident that they will not pull Jason off of his redshirt year. I am curious to see what weight he will go for midlands...... He looks pretty good at 149...... Maybe he will stay there.
  5. I have a question. Maybe I am not remembering correctly, but in the old rules if the match ended in a tie score (or maybe if the match ended with a 0-0 score) I thought it went to "the clinch" which was each man had an over under with his hands locked around his opponent. If one wrestler unlocked his hands he lost otherwise it was whichever wrestler scored. In that case, the clinch was "fair" because noone had a clear advantage. The new rules with the ball grab one man has a clear advantage over the other all based on chance which seems unfair to me. Why don't they just have it if a period ends 0-0 that they get into an over under and settle it that way.... just curious.... please correct me if I am mistaken on the old rules.
  6. As far as Howe goes..... Isn't there a Big 10 conference rule that states that if you transfer to a different Big 10 school that you cannot receive an athletic scholarship from the new school? That may weigh pretty heavy into his decision. Isn't there also an NCAA rule where you can lose a year of athletic eligibility if the school you are transferring from does not release you or something similar to what happened to Metcalf when he transferred from Virginia Tech to Iowa to follow Coach Brands? This may also be a big deal considering that Howe only has 1 more year of eligibility left. I am aware that he has a redshirt year to take, but I am not sure how this plays into it.

  8. I hate reversals.... I can't tell you how many times (especially with little kids) I have seen a kid blow a sure 1 point for escaping in order to go for the reversal just to wind up right back flat on his belly.... it's terrible....
  9. This is Briana's father, Neil Calanca. I don't care to post too much about it here other than to express my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all of those whose thoughts, prayers, and support have been with us through this most terrible, sad, and difficult ordeal.
  10. Seemed to me like the trendy thing to do this year was to call the top man for stalling if he was winning even when the bottom man had not made an attempt to build a base for 20 or 30 seconds. Also, seems like they give the top guy way too long to hang on the leg. I start a mental 5 count everytime I see a kid get to his feet from bottom and I would say I got to the 5 count at least 10 times without seeing a stall call or an attempt to return the bottom man to the mat. It's especially annoying when it happens 2 or 3 times in a row. One last thing I see alot was top Guy throwing the leg in when the bottom Guy is already up just to get the potentially dangerous call and a fresh start. Again this is especially annoying to see happen 3 times in a row with no stall call issued.
  11. RG, according to ur "official picks" thread u also got Stein wrong at171 putting u at 10.
  12. Coach Hawk asked me to post this. He said they will be back at it on Thursday!
  13. Hey Eko.... I was just wondering if you were considering Cliffy-Claven as a screen name before you decided on ekocottonball?
  14. Bid, You brought up a bad analogy with Shrewsbury. The Merrillville vs CP duals during the year you are speaking of (2007-08) were much tighter than the one we are talking about now. You could actually make a strategic argument for CP having a better chance to win the dual with the bump that year. If you would dig back into your archives one more year back maybe you would remember that Coach Vlink actually bumped Shrewsbury up a weight class to go and get a match against Salas at 215. And how did Shrewsbury and Salas end up finishing at state that year by the way? I can't remember. Probably because Shrewsbury didn't wrestle enough tough competition.
  15. Don't really want to get into this whole discussion, but Bill Hawkins is NOT getting way too much credit. If anything, he normally does not get enough credit for his role in CPs rise to the top of the heap. He is a GREAT coach and had a huge hand in getting CP's program where it is today. There is no substitute for getting a group of freshmen in the room all who have 300+ quality matches under their belts and solid fundamentals due to great youth coaching. This is what Bill Hawkins was turning out while he was running the CP Lightning youth wrestling program. Bill was the one putting in the time at all of the practices he ran along with all of the IKWF tournaments he had these kids go to. Did he do it alone? Certainly not..... but he did ALOT! Turns out that sometimes hard work really does pay off.
  16. Just for the record, Anthony Hawkins was also a 4X champ at Stagg tourney. Nice job, Roach!
  17. Where the heck is Dunefan when you need him???? I don't think the White Hen is open so he can't be there.... Dunefan, I am going to confiscate your clipboard if you keep this up (not posting results for CP that is).
  18. 103 - Josh Fuqua - 1st 112 - Colton Saroff - 2nd 119 - Trevor Burlison - 7th 125 - Matt Harvey - 1st 130 - Cameron Halsted - 2nd 135- Trevor Blue - 7th 140 - Jason Tsirtsis - 1st (OW) 145 - Josh Flamme - 2nd 152 - Eric Roach - 1st 160 - Dusty Shurg - 5th 171 - Kyle Shrewsbury - 1st 189 - Matt Langbehn - 4th 215 - Tyler Kral - 1st HWT - Josh Swope - DNP
  19. Here's a link to the results: http://www.illinoismatmen.com/2010-11/tournaments/stagg/stagg.pdf CP won the tourney as a team. 6 - champs 3 - 2nd place 1 - 4th place 1 - 5th place 2 - 7th place Jason Tsirtsis was voted OW.
  20. I also did not see Ian Hinton's or Josh Harper's names in the brackets. Does anyone know the story on that?
