xam148
Switching schools for sports related reasons used to be the exception. Lately it seems that this is not the case and instead of getting mad at the schools who do not follow this rule why don't we just get rid of the rule. We could at least change it so that the high school athlete is not the only one risking something by moving school districts.

I am willing to bet that if there was totally open enrollment, and athletes could simply changes schools at will, that we would lose quite a few Wrestling Programs in a short time. TripleB
Accountability would be lost also. A student gets in trouble at one school and can't wrestle?? No problem, his parents will just transfer him somewhere else.
xam148
and these things aren't happening now? This rule is not being followed so one of two things need to happen. Either abolish it and let everybody compete under the same rules or enforce this one/ rewrite it with some actual repercussions for everyone who is guilty of breaking it. TripleB
Right now a school doesn't have to sign off on a student, meaning that they have to sit for a year. Open Enrollment and that is gone.
xam148
News Flash its already here. How many more time does this sort of thing need to happen before anything will be done about it? Or has this become like speeding where some people follow the law but you don't really have to?
Coach Peck
Right now a school doesn't have to sign off on a student, meaning that they have to sit for a year. Open Enrollment and that is gone. The Athletic Transfer Policy would not change. If an Athlete has been enrolled in a High School and they change to a different High School an Athletic Transfer Form would have to be filled out with both schools taking care of their ends of it. If the orignal school contested the transfer then the IHSAA would investigate (the IHSAA could investigate anyway) and rule on whether the athlete would be eligible or not at the new school. What is happening now is that coaches are recruiting kids to come to their school while they are still in Middle School. If a School corporation has open enrollment it would be simple for a good wrestler to change to another school at the Middle School level and then they would be good to go at the High School level. The only caveat to that is that the IHSAA could come down on someone for recruiting (inducing) the Middle School to change to their school, but there is only one instance that I know of where they (IHSAA) have done that which was when Alan Henderson who played Basketball at IU was in Middle School and Indy area Coaches were getting a bit competitive for his services at the High School level. Smooth34
Why? The few decent kids at a small program would jump to a neighboring high school with a bigger/better program to get more competition, more recognition, etc. We've already seen this happen, it would just be much more common. WaltHarris
Personally, I'd love to see a kid go to any program they wanted to in Indiana. Realistically, it would be impossible to manage an educational system like that. And education is supposed to a least have some faint part in this, correct? (sarcasm) Image if a high school had 500 students in 2010 year. Then in 2011 Dan Gable decides to coach the wrestling team and Lou Holtz decides to coach the football team and the school's enrollment swells to 1,100. Then both coaches leave in 2012 and enrollment drops to 300. There is no way administratively to budget for that type of rapid increase/decrease swing in enrollments. Imagine the amount of teachers, secretaries and staff you would have to hire/fire with each of those enrollment swings. Not to mention if a school would even have the facility space.
