Round 1 - A touch of gloves and we're underway. Hadsel starts as the aggressor throwing two punches that miss. A strong right cross connects and drops Roberts to the floor. Hadsel follows with two more punches on the floor, but the damage is done and the referee rushes in to halt the contest. Steve Hadsel def. Taylor Roberts via knockout (punches) - Round 1, 0:17.

 

The in-arena crowd is still quite sparse heading into the evening's second contest.

 

LEN BENTLEY VS. MARQUES DANIELS

 

Round 1 - Daniels starts with a stiff low kick, then the two exchange a second set. Daniels rushes in, but drops with a counter punch. Bentley charges in with a series of punches to the downed opponent, then immediately jumps on Daniels' back. Bentley sinks in his right arm for the rear-naked choke, then rolls to his own back. Daniels has regained his senses and rolls to escape. Bentley tries for an arm bar, but is force dto pull guard. He immediately kicks his legs up and locks in the triangle choke. The hold is tight, but Daniels refuses to tap. Bentley tries to switch to an arm bar, but Daniels escapes. Daniels gets back to his feet and Bentley shoots in. The action stalls, and the referee calls the doctor in to check Daniels' face. On the restart, the two exchange punches in the center of the cage. Daniels flashes a high kic that's blocked, then drops Bentley with a flurry. Daniels charges in and Bentley pulls a closed guard. Bentley tries to kick out, but Daniels moves to his back. Daniels picks Bentley up and suplexes him to the canvas, but he quickly finds himself back in his opponent's guard. Bentley holds on underneath as time expires. Nice comeback by Daniels, but the early action earns Bentley the round on the MMAjunkie.com card, 10-9.

 

Round 2 - Daniels a opens with a right hand, then chases in with a flurry. Bentley moves away. Daniels switching stances and lands a kick to  the thigh. Daniels now stalking as Bentley backs away. A left hand scores for Daniels, but Bentley moces forward and lands  right of his own. Bentley scores with another right hand that drops Daniels and brings the crowd to life. Daniels charges in with 20 punches that mostly miss, then moves to the back of his turtled opponent. Bentley sneaks his right hand under the chin, but can't get the hooks in. Daniels rolls, and Bentley switches to an arm bar and back to guard in a series of action that mirrors the opening frame. Bentley again throws up his legs for the triangle, then switches to an arm bar, throwing Daniels to his back and fully extending the arm. Daniels somehow survives, escapes, and winds up in Bentley's guard. Bentley keeps  a closed guard, and the referee won't let the action stall long as he stands them up. Daniels lands a clean superman punch at the bell, and Bentley stumbles into his corner. A great finish for Daniels again, but MMAjunkie.com sees it for Bentley, 10-9.

 

Round 3 - Bentley's hands are on his hips as the round opens. Daniels throws a few kicks that miss. Bentley answers with a very tired kick of his own. Daniels lands a few kicks to the leg, then a right hand. Bentley answering with single punches. Both fighters hands are down. Daniels shoot sin, but Bentley keeps his balance. Daniels persists on the single leg, and pushes Bentley to the floor. Bentley pulls a closed guard, and the referee gives two quick calls for action before standing the pair again. Daniels tries a spinning backfist. Bentley answering with single punches as his corner calls for combinations. Daniels lands a few slapping kicks, but they are losing steam. Daniels ducks into a Bentley kick, but quickly grabs his opponent and slams him to the floor. Bentley pulls rubber guard, then lets it go and settles for a closed version. Daniels stands out of it, lands a few punches as he tries to pass, then Bentley scrambles to his feet. Daniels ducks under a spinning backfist and charges in for a single-leg. Bentley drops into guard, looking for a triangle as time winds down. The bell sounds, and Daniels has taken the third, but it's not enough to steal the fight. The arena is still just about 25 percent full, but the crowd that is here is vocal for the opening bouts.

 

GEORGE STORK VS. LANDON SHOWALTER

 

Round 1 - Stork immediately charges in for the clinch, and Showalter starts throwing knees inside. Stork pushes Showalter around the cage, but he keeps his balance. Stork persists and tosses Showalter to the floor. Stork lands several punches to the face from side control. but Showalter stands out of the hold. Showalter lands a few punches of his own back on the feet, then is forced to clinch. Showalter backs away and lands a series of punches, then two elbows. Showalter has Stork against the cage and tees off with two punches, but Stork backs away and lands two of his own. Stork again clinches, but Showalter is scoring the knees inside. Both fighters look gassed as they throw elbows and short punches inside. Showalter leans on Stork against the cage, and throws a few elbows inside as time expires. It's a close round, but MMAjunkie.com sees it for Showalter based on aggression, 10-9.

 

Round 2 - An immediate clinch, and Showalter again works from the inside. Stork is answering with a few clean punches inside, then slides to the back and looks for a suplex. Showalter resists, and Stork simply sits down. Stork takes the back, and with both hooks in and Showalter in front of him, looks for the choke. Showalter spins put of the hols and returns to his feet. Stork clinches, and Showalter lands and elbow inside. Showalter backs away and lands three crisp punches, then a flying knee form the clinch that rocks Stork. Showalter follows with a flurry, but Stork somehow remains on his feet. A knee in the clinch drops Stork, and Showalter pounces with several blows to his body. Stork courageously fights through and returns to his feet. Stork clinches again, exhausted. Showalter continues to land punches inside, but Stork again moves to the back. He looks for a suplex he's too tired to finish, and sits again. Showalter leans forward and dives for an ankle, but can't secure it. Stork rolls and finishes on top in side control, but he's dropped the round on MMAjunkie.com's card, 10-9.

 

Round 3 - Showalter opens with low kicks that sting the exhausted Stork. Stork trying to rush in for the clinch, but Showalter backing away and stinging him with low kicks and right hands. Showalter still has a bit of spring in his step as he circles to stay away. Stork is exhausted as he plods forward and looks for the clinch. Stork again looks for a suplex. Showalter thinks about diving for a leg and winds up underneath his foe. Stork moves to side control. Showalter scrambles to stand and finds himself briefly in a D'arce choke, and Stork rolls to finish the hold, but can't force the tap. Showalter scrambles free and back to his feet. Both fighters  exhausted as they throw meaningless punches. Showalter grabs a Thai plum and lifts is knee slowly into Stork's belly. The crowd tries to encourage the winded athletes. They trade right hands, and Stork's head rocks back when Showalter switches to elbows. Showalter pushes forward with a clinch and finishes with more elbows inside as the round closes. Stork shows a great chin, but he had little to offer in the way of offense. MMAjunkie.com sees it for Showalter, 10-9 in the third and 30-27 overall. Landon Showalter def. LYLE BEERBOHM VS. DUANE LUDWIG

 

Round 1 - Beerbohm  opens with a low kick, then immediately shoots. Ludwig sprawls, but Beerbohm takes him to the floor. Ludwog springs up briefly, but Beerbohm  puts him right back down and moves to side control. Working on Ludwig's left side, Beerbohm  hold the position and delivers left knees to the body. Ludwig tries to stand up, but settles for guard. Ludwig scrambles free and delivers an illegal kick to the head while Beerbohm  is still on the floor. It costs Ludwig a point. Beerbohm doesn't want to rest long, and he again shoot sin on the restart. Ludwig sprawls, but Beerbohm tosses him to the floor with a smooth throw. Ludwig tries to work in a butterfly guard, and Beerbohm works hard to pass. Beerbohm throws a flurry of punches capped off with an elbow, then settles into Ludwig's half-guard. Ludwig scrambles free, but Beerbohm wraps his left arm around Ludwig's neck in a modified rear-naked choke from side position. It's a schoolyard move, but it's in tight. Ludwig spins and resists as long as he can, but flat on his belly he's forced to tap. Lyle Beerbohm def. Duane Ludwig via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 4:27.

 

The finishing hold is officially announced as a "schoolyard choke" in the impressive win for Beerbohm.

 

BRIAN CARAWAY VS. ALEX ZUNIGA

 

Round 1 - Caraway shoots in quickly and takes Zunigo to the floor. Zuniga grabs half-guard, but Caraway stands over him. There's a few traded punches before Caraway settles on top of Zuniga. Zuniga ties up the arms and the referee calls for action. Caraway slides out to side control and Zunia looks to use the cage to leverage his legs back for an arm bar. Caraway spins him and remains in control on top. Caraway offering little offense from top position. Zuniga tries to roll as Carway looks for the back. Zuniga settles for guard, and Caraway stands, lands a punch as he passes and moves to side control. Zuniga rolls to escape and Caraway grabs the back with both hooks in. Caraway rolls to his back, holding Zuniga in front, but he rear-naked choke hasn't yet been secured. The tow fight for hand control, and just as Caraway brings in the choke, Zuniga rolls away. Caraway keeps focused, and locks in the choke with his left arm as time winds down. Zuniga grimacs, his face reddens, but the bell sounds and he gasps for air. Caraway takes it on the MMAjunkie.com card, 10-9.

 

Round 2 - Caraway jabs, and Zuniga answers with a right hand. The pair trades, but Caraway shoots in, wrestling it quickly to the floor. Caraway transitions immediately to the position in which the opening round closed. Caraway fights to sneak in a choke as Zuniga throws punches behind him. Carway's hooks are holing the position as Zuniga tries to spin out of the hold. Zuniga throwing punches to Caraway's face, but he holds the position confidently. Zuniga sits up, the stands out of the hold. Both fighters miss with jabs, but Caraway lands a right uppercut-left hook combo. Zuniga swings back wildly, but Caraway stays out of reach before landing another uppercut. Caraway pushes the fight back to the mat. Zuniga eats a few punches and rolls as Caraway passes to mount. Caraway scores with a few punches from top. Zuniga tries to roll to his belly, but Caraway's mount prevents it. Zuniga covers up and his face is starting to show the damage. The bell sounds, and MMAjunkie.com again sees it for Caraway, 10-9.

 

Round 3 - A touch of gloves gets the third round started. Caraway stalks, fakes a shot and lands a few hard jabs. Caraway clinches, lands a few knees to the belly, then Zuniga tries a knee and falls to his back in half-guard. Zuniga rolls to escape, but Caraway rolls with him and remains on top. Zuniga is cut over his left eye and tries to spin away to avid further damage. Caraway tries to take the back, but remains in top position through the scramble. Caraway moves to the back and again locks in both hooks before rolling to his own back. Caraway again can't secure the choke, and he rolls to top position, then side control. Caraway keeps right hands in the face of Zuniga, and while not the most powerful blows, the damage is adding up. Zuniga tries to avoid the blows, but Caraway mounts. Carway rides too high and slips off as Zuniga rolls. The two return to the feet with time winding down and Zuniga fires off a desperation spinning backfist. Caraway ducks under, throws a high kick and the fight ends. MMAjunkie.com sees it as a dominating 30-27 win for Caraway. Brian Caraway def. The arena is approximately 35-40 percent full as the evening's final preliminary card begins.

 

JUSTIN DAVIS VS. DENNIS HALLMAN

 

Round 1 - Hallman shoots immediately, takes Davis to the floor and moves immediately to the back. Hallman immediately sinks in the rear-naked choke and squuezes tight. Davis tries briefly to resist, but the choke is deep and he is forced to tap. The introduction took longer, and Hallman didn't break a sweat. Hallman almost scowls as Davis is visibly disappointed in his performance in the short-notice bout. Dennis Hallman def. Justin Davis via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 0:20.

Can't be for the organizer to know they are paying that many fighters on the card and only put people in a little more than 25% of the seats.    May need a slightly smaller venue to make the event appear more crowded.  Then place a few less fighters on the card and use the extra money to pay a few bigger name fighters to appear on the card.

Well the tickets are somewhat reasonable when compared to UFC rates, so a small crowd does not do well for Strikeforce staying viable with the economy the way it is.  Like I said smaller venues and smaller cards with bigger star power (well semi-star pwoer) may be a better move for them if this becomes a normal thing.

CORY DEVELA VS. LUKE ROCKHOLD

 

Round 1 - Devla charges forward quickly, but a short right hand drops him to the floor. Rockhold pounces and delivers 20-plus looping punches and hammerfists to his downed opponent. The referee watches closely as the damage mounts, opening a cut that begins to drop in the mat. Rockhold jumps to the back of his tutled opponent and locks in a rear-naked choke. Devela tries to survive, but dazed and bleeding he is forced to tap. Luke Rockhold def. Cory Devela via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 0:30.

 

The fight imo should have been stopped due to strikes much earlier than what it was.

 

SHAYNA BASZLER VS. SARAH KAUFMAN

 

Round 1 - Kaufman pens with a combination, but Baszler stans in the pocket and fires back. Kaufman clinches, and pulls guard as Baszler pushes her down. Kaufman controls the head, but Baszler eventually works free and stands. Kaufman releases the guard and Baszler moves to side control, then north-south. Baszler puts her knee in Kaufman's face, then tries to lock in a choke as Kaufman sweeps to top position. Baszler hangs on to half-guard as Kaufman lands a few punches. Baszler returns to guard, but the pair receives a warning for action before they are stood up. Kaufman mocves forward behind her hands, but Baszler avoids. Kaufman pushes Baszler against the cage. Baszler tries for a toss and misses. Kaufman lands knees to the body inside as both wrestlr for an advantage in the clinch. The two are seperatted with a few seconds left, and a flurry ends the round. Close round, but MMAjunkie.com sees it for Baszler, 10-9.

 

Round 2 - Both fighters trade in the pocket, though Kaufman pushes forward and clinches. Kaufman looks for a trip, misses on a right and eats a Kaufman right hand. Kaufman throws a flurry, then another. A left hand gets through and rocks Baszler. Baszler's chin is high as Kaufman strikes up the middle. Another left hand connects for Kaufman. Kaufman lands two solid blows in a flurry as Baszler is trapped against the cage. Kaufman continues to score with her hands. Baszler slides away, but Kaufman stalks. Baszler's back is against the cage and Kaufman keeps her there. Baszler's mouth is wide open. Kaufman lands a kick to the thigh. Baszler's movement is non-existent as Kaufman picks her apart. Kaufman continues to score as Baszler appears to be wilting. Baszler throws a few hard elbows that miss, but Kaufman ends with a flurry. Dominant 10-9 round for Kaufman on the MMAjunkie.com card.

 

Round 3 - Baszler opens with a few jabs, but Kaufman covers and again scores with her punches. Baszler dives for a takedown and settles for pulling half-guard. Kaufman throws a few punches to the body from top position, and Baszler pulls guard. Baszler rolls for an arm, but Kaufman defends and stands. Kaufman again stalks and lands a few punches before Baszler grabs a Thai clinch. Kaufman pushes in and earns a toss to the floor. Kaufman briefly moves to full mount but elects to stand. Baszler again backs up to the cage as Kaufman advance behind punches. The blows are scoring point sfor Kaufman with two minutes remaining. Kaufman lands a low kick, then a left hand. Both fighters throw a flurry that misses, but Baszler can not get off the cage. Kaufman attacks, sensing a finish, and several punches hurt Baszler. She stays on her feet and clinches, eventually spinning off the cage and dropping for a knee. Kaufman defends well, establishes top position, then stands out of the hold as time expires. LOL.  They just interviewed Josh Barnett in between  fights and he "cut a promo" saying he would kill his mother to win the fight vs. fedor.  He quickly backtracked though as his mother was indeed in the house.  Great personality.

 

Surprise Surprise Gurgel is keeping the fight on the feet at this point.  Although he does have some good leg kicks and heavy hands.

 

JORGE GURGEL VS. CONOR HEUN

 

Round 1 - Tentative start as the two try to find their range. Gurgel once again looking to box. A low kicks scores for Gurgel. The two both grab collar ties and throw rapis punches to the gut. They back away and exchange again. Gurgel getting the better early work, but Heun answering gamely. Gurgel throws another low kick then a jab. Heun land sa right, but Gurgel answers and pushes Heun to his bacl. He refuses to follow and lets Heun stand. Gurgel lands two more low kicks. A third follows, but Heun answers with a shot to the body. Both trade in the pocket. Gurgel circles and lands a low kick before dancing away. Heun scores with his own,a nd it briefly stuns Gurgel. Gurgel leads with a right hand, then again scores with low kicks. Heun pursues with punches, but Gurgel avoids most of the attack. Gurgel continues to attack the leg as time expires. MMAjunkie.com sees it for the Brazilian jiu-jitsu balck belt who hates the ground game, 10-9.

Round 2 - Heun charges in, but Gurgel continues to attack the leg. The two clinch breifly and throw wildly. Neither gets the better, but the crowd roars. Heun scores a stiff jab. The two continue to trade, and Gurgel throws a high kick. Heun lands a nice uppercut, but Gurgel immediately answers with a combo that stuns Heun. Gurgel scores again, but Heun stands in the pocket and tags him back. Gurgel scores with a high kick, but eats a 1-2. Heun attacking as Gurgel sticks and moves. Gurgel's right eye is bloodied, and Heun continues to move forward. Gurgel lands a right hand, but Heun answers in kind. Gurgel dances away unleashes a flurry. Heun survives against the fence. Gurgel lands a high kcik, follows it with 10 punches, then throws another high kick as time expires. It's a rousing finish, and MMAjunkie.com sees it for Gurgel, the kickboxing stylist, 10-9.

 

Well it appears as though this just might throw fuel on Gurgels stand up fire....He has multiple BJJ gyms.  I would like to see some of his technical skills.

 

Round 3 - Gurgel again scores low. Heun trying to track him down, but Gurgel evading well. Gurgel leads with a hook then returns to the leg. Both fighters trade punches, but Gurgel finishes with a kick to the body. Heun misses a flashy spinning kick, then Gurgel slips on attack. Gurgel briefly looks for a leg, but thinks twice about fighting on the ground and stands. The tape on Heun right wrsit is unwinding, but action continues. Gurgel still appears to have plenty of spring in his step, but Heun drops him with a punch. Heun follows to the  ground, bu Gurgel quickly sweeps to top position. Heun tries rubber guard, but Gurgel passes to side control and stands. Gurgel's eye again a bloody mess, but he stands and trades. Gurgel slowing as time winds down, and Heun continue to attack. Gurgel calls for the crowd to cheer, and they answer immediately. Heun tries another spinning crescent kick as time expires, but the finish isn't there. The crowd cheers the conclusion of the bout. The now two-thirds-full arena cheers wildly at the conclusion of the contest, as well as when the decision is awarded to Gurgel.

 

 

It looked as though during the post fight interviews that Heun had knocked Gurgels teeth through the skin below his lower lip.  They both were great ambassadors to the sport in the interviews. +1 for Gurgel and Huen.

 

Very active grappling 1st round.  I love watching fights like this.

 

TIM KENNEDY VS. NICK THOMPSON

 

Round 1 - The two trade on the feet briefly before Kennedy shoots in. Thompson immediately looks for the kimura, but it allows Kennedy to transition to the back. Thompson won't release the arm as he transitions to a straight arm bar. Kennendy finally works it free and sinks in the hooks as he looks for the rear-naked choke. Thompson stays calm, spins, and pulls half-guard underneath. Thompson tries to roll free, but Kennedy transitions to the back.  Another series of transition sees Thompsonbriefly ont op, but Kennedy immediately on the back again. Kennedy land sa nice punch on the floor, but he can't get his hooks in and Thompson stands, but Kennedy muscles him to the floor, nearly seciring a side choke. A ground clininc, Thomspn slides away but finds himslef under Kennedy again. Thompson gives up his back, then rolls away, but he can't sweep to top. Thompson holds guard as Kennedy attacks wih  his hands. Kennedy moves to side control briefly, but Thompson works back to half-guard as time expires. MMAjunkie.com sees it for Kennedy, 10-9.

 

Wow! I'm very impressed with Kennedy! He is a bad bad man. Ranger Sniper to boot.  Although Thompson supposedly tapped to strikes to the back of the head.

 

Round 2 - Kennedy misses on a superman punch to open, then a high kick. Thompson stalks, but he eats an overhand right. Thompson answers with a straight right of his own. Kennedy shoots in, then tosses Thompson to the floor. Kennedy looks again for a submission, but Thompson remains crafty in escape. Kennedy switches out to side control. Thompson shrimps out, but Kennedy grabs a headlock and unleashes some grounf-and-pound. Thompson falls to his back, and Kennedy follows. Thompson again tries to roll out, but Kennedy flattens him out and rains down more punches. Thompson tires of the barrage and appears to tap, ending the fight. Thompson complains when he returns to his feet, perhaps about the location of the blows.

Good Fight...smokein joe always surprises me.  I'm a sucker for a fighter with a bit of a gut.

 

JOE VILLASENOR VS. EVANGELISTA "CYBORG" SANTOS

 

Round 1 - No touch of gloves. Villasenor starts with a leaping jab that misses, then misses on a big right. Santos just scores with a low kick.  Villasenor rushes in and narrowly misses eating a right hand. It's a moderate pace to open. Villasenor dancing around  and just misses with another leaping left. Santos scores again to the leg. Villasenor moves in behind a punch, and Santos clinches and forces him to the cage. Villasenor throws and elbow inside, then trips Santos and sets up in guard. Villasenor stands and controls the legs as he tries to pass, but settles for falling in Santos' open guard. The referee calls for action and Villasenor passes to half-mount. Villasenor again stands and controls the legs as he moves to side control. Santos uses his feet on the cage to spin,  then rolls and stands. Villasenor holds the head as they stand, then backs away. A few kicks are exchanged on the feet, and Villasenor misses a wild right as time expires. MMAjunkie.com gives it to Villasenor, 10-9.

 

Round 2 - Santos nearly starts the round without his mouthpiece, bur gets it last-second. Santos scores with a high kick, then eats a stiff jab. Santos throws a low kick, but Villasenor times the counter right hand perfectly. Villasenor looks to take the ground again after a quick flurry. Santos again returns to the leg twice, then a third time. Villasenor has stopped with the lead left hands, and Santos is using the low kicks to keep him at bay. Villasenor ipens up briefly, but backs away with Santos on the cage. Santos backs away and Villasenor connects with a right hand. Villasenor throws a left kick to the body that is caught, but Santos can't capitalize. Villasenor pushes forward continually, and Santos begins to stand his ground. More low kicks and a left hand from Santos, then a spinning back kick. Santos lands a four-punch combination and Villasenor comes alive. The two trade as they crooss the cage, but Santos earns the best. Villasenor closes strong, but the continual assault on the legs from "Cyborg" earns the round on the MMAjunkie.com card, 10-9.

Round 3 - Moderate pace again on the third to open. Villaseno visible limping on his lead leg. The pair clinches, but Santos winds up on top when they hit the floor. Villasenor works an open guard. Santos lands a few blows from top, but Villasenor stands without taking too much damage. Santos misses on a big uppercut and Villasenor counters. Both fighters breathing heavily, and a few right hands sneak in for Villasenor. Santos answers back, but he's backing away. Villasenor misses on an overhand attack. Both trade jabs. Villasenor scoring with his jab as he moves forward. Santos answering with counter right as he retrats. Neither fihger throwing combinations. Villasenor snaps Santos head back, and his left eye is red. The crowd comes alive in the final minute, and both fighters throw a few solid punches. Villasenor connects on a few punches at the end, and it may be enough to take the fight. Close final frame, but MMAjunkie.com sees it for Villasenor, 10-9, giving him the fight, 29-28.

Sarah Kaufman trained back in January at our gym.  She was very strong for a female. Stronger than alot of guys her weight.

How is the training going?  Fights?  What is upcoming for you and the folks from your gym?

Training is good. Won my last fight in May vs a decent 5-0 fighter. Our fight team went 6-0 for the night. Next up is fighting again maybe in September and also NAGA grappling championships in September.
