This might sound weird, but I feel bad for the kid who won by the "injury" default. He has to look at his Sectional champion ribbon everyday, knowing that he didn't earn it.
Has there been any thought to post once in a while who is on the watch list? It might make for more interest at tournaments to recognize some of the wrestlers who are on the watch list when looking at the brackets. I know a lot of the wrestlers in Marion County and the Region, but I know very little about the ones from Ft. Wayne and that area.
It seems to me that you are worrying too much about your son being ranked. The only rankings that matter are the ones in February after Individual state is completed. Every year, there are ranked wrestlers who get upset and don't make it out of their sectionals, while a few unranked wrestlers make it to Conseco. IMO a lot of coaches don't give their input to the rankings guy about their wrestlers. The rankings only reflect the wrestlers who have had input given from their coaches to the rankings guy. Maybe you should swallow your pride and help your son just focus on wrestling his best every match and not worry about whether he's ranked or not.
Both wrestlers are good, but I'd go with Bell. He's wrestled tough against some good competitors the past couple of years, plus he had to wrestle Cashe Quiroga in practice. I'm not saying Thomas hasn't, but I've seen more of Bell's matches than Thomas.
The deepest weight class is always the one that your kid is in; and the weight class right below and right above your kid's weight class is the thinnest.
There are some really good 285 lbers in Marion county who haven't had info given for rankings consideration. Vinny Parmer of Southport, for example, won Decatur Central Sectionals last year, and defeated Devin Shaeffer twice last year, including the sectional finals. He has been having a great season, but is not well known except in Marion county.
I preferred pinning my opponent in a tournament so I could keep my energy and reset. But, I would cut often when I was working on a new move, and then would go for the pin just before the tech fall. One time I didn't get the pin in time, and our team ended up losing by 1 point. Coach never let me live it down!
There's no difference in dropping from 130 to 119 and 119 to 103. You still have to be disciplined at proper weight management to stay at the 7% body fat requirement.
