  1. That is too funny! Maybe they should make that chain mail style shark bite armor part of the equipment list for refs in youth tourneys. ;D
  2. I thought they we interesting last season. Looking forward to them again!
  3. Have not run into a biter since youth years. The last time this happened we had warned the ref the kid had a history of being a biter to no avail. He bit 3 kids at the same tourney. All 3 sets of parents went to the biters parents and showed the marks (the marks were still there quite some time later!) The dad of the biter pulled his son out of the tourney right away after having his son apologize. Not sure what he told his son but that wrestler never bit anyone again.
  4. I thought Penn had 10 teams this year or is it down to 8 now?
  5. Round robin is the truly best format when time allows IMO. Next in line would be almost any format that included 2 losses and you are out starting at round 1. This is the general format used at most national events. I like this format because quality wrestlers can still advance even after "getting stuck" or being placed on the loaded side of a bracket.
  6. That is not even remotely close what I said. Here I'll break it down again for you - A wrestler who is .... 1) Weighed in for a given meet/tourney 2) Is on the scorecard to compete 3) Is deemed healthy to compete by a referee/official and very specifically 4) In a team dual tourney the wrestler continues to wrestle against other opponents. Feel free dream up weird/extreme cases for a reasonable reason to forfeit. I believe it would be fairly easy to award a loss in the conditions I described.
  7. What you describe could happen in a dual but would be a much more obvious case of poor sportsmanship type of "dodging matches" in a team dual. Wouldn't a injured wrestler take a loss by injury default? Still a loss on their record. Again... the key times where forfeit abuse could easily be lowered is in team dual tourneys.
  8. That's a bummer to hear. I agree. It will be interesting to see/hear the outcome.
  9. There are lots of tourneys already scheduled for USA wrestling. Here is a link to the schedule - http://www.iswa.com/iswa_events.htm Having wrestlers compete in all 3 styles of wrestling (folkstyle, freestyle and greco) gives great tools to wrestlers. Something like 97% of all national champion wrestlers compete in all 3 styles of wrestling.
  10. The wrestler does exist if he/she is healthy, weighed in and listed on the scorebook as able to wrestle and specifically if the wrestler wrestles in the same weight in other matches in the same tourney.
  11. Suspended in middle of team tourney but then off suspension later in the tourney? A wrestler who is suspended before a tourney would not even be weighing in would they? I don't think your scenario fits to what are the classic cases of forfeits. I don't think any wrestler should take losses to their record during a suspension but during the other above scenarios I mentioned in my previous post the wrestler should take the loss.
  12. The only real problem with this is that some semi state areas and even some conferences may have stacked numbers of quality wrestlers at a given weight. I have seen a number of wrestlers who went to the state tourney from areas in the state that were weak in that weight. I have seen SSQ win against SQ from those weaker areas. That is why the toughness of opponents and common opponents are also so important in seeding.
  13. A forfeit should not be allowed unless the team has no healthy wrestler at that weight. Bumping wrestlers up or down is the right way to try for a better match up. A lessor skilled wrestler even if defeated may be able to keep the match close enough to allow victory, a major or even a tech. Even being pinned, the team score is still the same 6 points of a forfeit. There may be those fluke chances the lessor skilled wrestler may even win or "catch" the better wrestler to gain a victory. All of those outcomes would be better for, or equal to, team points then taking the loss by forfeit. Protecting wrestler records by forfeit is simply a way to try and scam the seeding for future tourneys. In team tourneys where a team the forfeits 1 match at a weight but later has a wrestler at that weight... the wrestler that is wrestling the previously forfeited weight should have to take a loss by forfeit to their season record.
  14. Hildebrandt did not wrestle. Goodman won vs. Anglemeyer in finals, Crume won vs. Chapple in finals. Manspeaker wrestled at 130 taking 3rd place. Don't know who Manspeaker lost against.
  15. A new wrestling film is being released this month called - "Legendary" Looks like a good film. Youtube film preview link -
  16. There are many great coaches now but some great possibilities for coaching are on the sidelines. Adding James Tanniehill to our greco state team staff would be a nice place to start. I'm sure there are many other olympic quality coaches we should be recruiting too right here in Indiana. Having some RTCs at neutral sites such as local colleges instead of the majority of RTCs at high schools might help bring more of the best wrestlers to train in the same rooms instead of training separately. Set RTC practice days to certain days of the week only, club practice days to be allowed only on days RTCs are not practicing... again to have the best wrestlers practicing with the best partners. Increase the length of freestyle/greco season by having the USA State Folkstyle tourney the weekend after the High School tourney. Have at least 1 freestyle AND 1 greco tourney each weekend on BOTH the Northern and Southern halves of Indiana for the entire freestyle greco season. Wrestlers should then hopefully not have to travel over 100 miles to compete in a weekend tourney. Freestyle and greco camps dates should end so that as the wrestlers leave camp they go directly to Fargo. A week off between camp and Fargo is bad for training IMO.
  17. There was a nice bunch of videos for the Greco state tourney thread showing big throws from that tourney. Let's see the big throws from the Freestyle state tourneys... Tyler Chapple 130 (Penn wrestling club) threw a nice 5 at the Junior Freestyle Sate tourney.
  18. As part of a effort to increase interest & general knowledge about freestyle and greco wrestling can we have a board section devoted only to freestyle and greco wrestling?
  19. Kevin Chapple - Cadet 119 (Penn Wrestling Club) Threw a nice 5 this weekend. Tyler Chapple - Junior 130 (Penn Wrestling Club) did not throw a 5 at this tourney but he won the Greco State Championship. It was a good tourney with a lot of great wrestling & wrestlers participating. Freestyle & Greco are the most exciting forms of wrestling to watch & be a part of IMO.

    greco

The main difference between freestyle and greco is that a wrestler cannot attack the legs or use the legs in a offensive or defensive manor. This is a link to the complete wrestling rulebook - http://www.themat.com/forms/Rulebook.pdf
  21. I have not seen the event on trackwrestling wither but the matches can be watched on a live video feed on a pay-per-view. Pay-pre-view link : http://www.nhsca.com/ppv.cfm
