  1. I see two mistakes regarding this call: 1) In 'freestyle terms' this is clearly brutality as FS referees call it. These are not international level athletes. They are high school kids. This is no different than the NFL helmet contact rules this season. Sport is sport, a move like this is more like gladiators. 2) If that is not brutality, then the referee needs to call the fall so that this kid doesn't have to get up and risk having that happen again! If I were scoring this match it would have been a five point move; 3 for the first bounce and 2 more back exposure for the second bounce : There is no place in wrestling for this. It has been said before, keep those kinds of moves inside the cage. If you agree with this call, then you are saying that this move should be allowed at every local tourney and state finals. Simply nonsense.
  2. 30 inches of lake effect snow in St. Joe/Elkhart County this morning! Thanks for the broadcast. We wouldn't be able to see it without you guys!
  3. That treadmill was screaming, too! I like to watch the show while eating a pizza and drinking a high calorie beverage while sitting in the recliner...
  4. He's just warming up! Congrats Peck!
  5. If you had any idea how much work the ISWA board does to make this wrestling state run you would be much more forgiving of a very honest Sharon. This woman has put in more hours into Indiana wrestling than many of us who have competed.
  6. Doesn't matter who you sent to the meeting when you toe the line and shake hands : I used to like wrestling because all the talk didn't mean sh@@ until a hand was raised >
  7. Keep thinking 'big picture', Sarah. We are behind you all the way.
  8. Exactly, and it should be added that Harper is building a program of the same caliber. This rivalry is going to do wonders when it comes to promoting wrestling and broadening the fan base. These two should be complimented for their work, not criticized.
  9. If I had children of my own... : I have 630 from 7:30-2:30. Many of them try to wrestle, but that is usually when they meet me :-\
  10. In today's world when kids are becoming more and more narcissistic with Facebook, text messaging, and all the new forms fo technology, I am glad to hear that someone out there thinks that teaching teenagers loyalty and sacrifice for the sake of a 'team' is a noble cause. Coach Snyder makes and excellent point that his job WOULD be much easier if he didn't emphasize the team concept. He is not pushing that kids care about others' interests before their own. If you spend anytime at all near the MHS program you know that he pushes character and intergrity. Yes, they are still kids and they make dumb mistakes from time to time. However, his athletes leave the program on the road to becoming men that any of us would be proud to call our own. What I saw last night was a Coach that puts his heart and soul into a team. His reaction to the pin that gave his team 19 team pts. was very memorable and something I wish every fan could have seen. He takes ownership of the programs success and failures. That is something I would love my son to learn. Onto another topic, Penn's Reagan is also someone to watch. I talked to Coach Harper last Saturday about this wrestler and he had nothing but good things to say. In my opinion, I think Coach Harper is hard to impress. Devin is the kind of kid I will cheer for everytime. And for the record, it SHOULD go without saying that Harper runs a program with an equal emphasis on character and integrity. I would not hesitate to put my own children in either program.
  11. On another season a heavyweight from Iowa (state not university) was in the finals. My brother, AWood3 and also an ex-heavyweight, entered a similar contest at work. By week 6 everyone had quit the contest and he took 300 bucks home 100 lbs. lighter. I agree, letting and athlete/ex-wrestler into a contest like this is not a good idea for good of the contest. On the other hand, I have been telling everyone at work today simply because I think people should hear his life story. He is an example of how wrestling can have a positive impact on someone's life both on the mat and after the last whistle blows. The new season starts Jan. 4.
  12. Let's do it like the Charger Invite (Elkhart Memorial) and do the whole thing round robin!@#$%^&* What's the point of having a tournament on Christmas break if it only takes 2 days out of the 2 weeks

  14. I am little taken back by the tone of the post! I have wrestled the South Bend schools in high school, I have refereed the matches, and I have had the pleasure of getting to know the coaches responsible for the programs. Miller, Scruggs, Hartman, and others put their heart and soul into these kids/programs. I know that scores and pictures of champions get put in the paper, but... Miller and Scruggs are class acts. These guys produce men (and women) with character. Scruggs coached the first and only girl wrestler I know of in HS in our area at LaSalle. Hartman and Scruggs both spend their summers driving kids all of the state looking for mat time. Give these guys some credit. Don't think for a second that I have forgotten Flatt. This guy goes all year long. He has run the South Bend club, he brings in the cultural exchange teams, and he works closely with the referees association in St. Joe/Elkhart counties. Scruggs, Hartman, and Flatt are all regulars at the annual coaches panel meeting for the St. Joe Officials Assoc. These guys put in as much time, give them their due respect >
  15. The whole lineup thing happened last year. Seltzer and Pickard know the rules about weigh-ins and qualified weight. Seltzer tried to move Corpe last year and the whole meet was stopped and eventually a phone call was made to Bobby Cox of the IHSAA before the meet resumed. As for all the other stuff, winners win...
  16. Is there going to be a DJ and spotlights again this year? Who is the lucky guest referee? The 4 & 8 year olds have their Christmas music program that night! The principal at the school won't return my calls or emails. I am pleading my case to their mother. If we come late we will be stuck standing on top behind the batting practice nets :-\
  17. I heard that she had a growth spurt in the off season. Good luck, Sarah!
  18. Best match I have ever wrestled, quater final match at state vs. David O'campo. In overtime he threw a lateral that sent me flying into the ref. The referee fell off the mat onto the floor and was knocked out cold. He stayed down until long after the match was over. Another official had to be pulled off another mat. I was out of injury time and coach made me stay in the center to avoid any unexpected penalties to end the match. When the new ref walked on the mat I wasn't expecting him to start right away since the other official was still on the floor. He blew the whistle while I was turned towards the coach's corner. I whipped around into my stance. O'campo sprawled, I reacted by sprawling, but I slipped on the sweat that puddled during the wait and fell on top of O'campo. The ref awarded two and walked off the mat. He never even raised my hand! Coach Nick ran out and jumped on me while I was still laying there. The kid taping the match threw his arms in the air and knocked the tripod down the steps breaking the camera.
  19. What a great thread! Harper vs. Quiroga, the crowd would get louder as Harper cranked to turn him in the third. It was like the power-half was a volume switch on a scream machine. Eppert vs. Wright (the last word), I was the assistant official on that finals match. When the final stalling call was made we couldn't even talk to each other. It was so loud we couldn't hear each other and we were yelling in each others' ears! My personal favorite has to be the 171 lb semi-final between Floyd Central and Roncalli. I have seen it mentioned in many other threads, but not yet in this one. It came down to a last minute scramble too. Those two went at each other from whistle to whistle. I have never focused so hard on a match in my life. David Zimmer from Angola (mentioned several times in this thread) is no the leprechaun at Notre Dame.
  20. When I started reading this thread I was laughing. By the end I threwup a little baby barf in my mouth... :-[
  21. Next time be sure to get all the glitter out of your eyes before the match starts.
  22. It's hilarious now that someone pointed it out! You see that every weekend!
  23. 2 seconds left did seem like a 'gotcha' call at that point. I will admit that I didn't stay for the whole thing, but the length of day is going to make for some probable officiating problems. If you have to be in a gym that long people are going to begin to get on each other's nerves no matter what you call! Having said that Roger Griffith and Hot Rod Morgan did offer a dose of common sense that helped me keep my sanity throughout the day. Mr. Anslinger (sp?) and Mr. Russel are two officials who don't get to our area very often at all. I have to give them the highest compliment any official can get, I barely noticed them at all. Always, a good feeling when you can say that about an official.
