  1. It's just hard to read/hear how great the status of Indiana wrestling is when at the SB Clay invitational this year, all of the coaches were excited that there would be 5-8 matches each round. And let me tell you, those coaches were all about growing the sport and getting matches. Everyone was willing to bump, move, and do whatever else they needed to to forego maximum dual meet success in favor of getting wrestlers mat time. You are right, class wrestling is no more a magic bullet than wrestlebacks. Like I said, when you're sitting where some of us are, it's just hard to hear/read about the fantastic state of Indiana high school wrestling, that's all. Believe me, we're pulling as much of the chain as we can. And we appreciate how much of the chain is being pulled by the top end. We just want to make sure that if the sky is falling, no one misses it because their head is in the sand.
  2. No doubt everything in the last two posts is accurate. Individual wrestlers are not rotting. Wrestling as a whole is rotting from the middle down. No way am I saying the magic word fixes everything. History shows that when I say the magic word, others point to wrestlebacks and proper seeding beyond sectional as issues as well, so the opposite approach seemed appropriate. My main concern as a wrestling dad, coach, and fan is the overall health of the sport in our state. Having nationally competitive top flight athletes is wonderful, but hopefully people don’t look at that as the only indicator. If neither of my sons and none of my teams ever wins another state title, but the sport grows and we can all enjoy it together into their respective adulthoods, then that’s a trade I will gladly make.
  3. The middle and bottom are rotting out of the Indiana wrestling scene and the top is shooting to the moon. If you like watching Big Ten Network and hearing a ton of names you recognize, we are doing great. If you want a sustainable wrestling culture in our state, not so much. No one has to say the word, but we don’t have to pretend proper wrestlebacks and seedings are the only things Ohio, Illinois, and Pennsylvania have.
  4. Culver Community’s room holds about 2/3 of a full mat. We are extremely low on varsity numbers, but our intramural youth program has over 40 this season. We had to haul a mat down to the elementary school and hold youth practices in that gym. Gym teacher down there was generous enough to let us store them on the stage, so we don’t have to haul back and forth for every practice.

  9. Does anyone know when the ISWA event list will be updated? They still only have the major events right now, nothing local.
  10. We keep saying this year after year, but do you think we will ever actually slow down? If someone can point to non-anecdotal evidence that we are heeding our own advice, please present. From where I am sitting, it seems that kids are wrestling (and/or playing baseball/softball, basketball, volleyball,...) more and more every year.
  11. Good lesson on not running your mouth in the first place. You lose a lot of "benefit of the doubt" when you make a first impression of disrespect.
  12. If we are running an all-in, single class tournament, host sites and who goes where should be based on geography. Hopefully Clint isn't sore about me moving in on his question:}
  13. If we add girls wrestling, wouldn't that be offset by boys wrestling?
  14. Post retracted due to misreading information...doing more research and will repost...
  15. California participation: 14-15: 26374 15-16: 23945 16-17: 22383 17-18: file won't work for some reason 18-19: 22602 Their participation looks to be following a similar trend as Indiana There are several small school coaches who have active feeder programs, help out with MS and/or youth and usually run one or the other. We don't just "make appearances," we actually run practices, organize schedules, and communicate with parents.
  16. What an individual classed tournament gives small schools is a foothold to sell all of that hard work. At our school, we have had two state champions. One was a guy who was 275 pounds and still athlete enough to run the 200m dash on our track team. The other was literally the best athlete in the history of our school. My point is, not people I can walk up to the average kid walking the hallway and say, "hey, just do what he did!" The class wrestling foothold gives us a chance to have more wrestlers of reasonable athletic ability who have put in the work show success, thus making the work more of a selling point. This in turn leads to more success, etc.
  17. Me, too. It is a thrilling environment. My son just asked me the other day, "Dad, do you think I could be a state champion?" and I said (and meant it) yes, and explained to him all of the camps, tournaments, etc. that it would take to make that happen. My son wrestling in this system does not worry me. The decline in participation in Indiana wrestling (while the rest of the nation is growing in wrestling participation) worries me. When you look at what the other states do that we don't do for small schools, there is one that stands out - a classed individual tournament.
  18. At the end of the day, I think most of us recognize that being from a small school means it is more likely that a wrestler has a more difficult path to success at the state level. Some of us are OK with that, and some of us worry that discrepancy will have long-term negative consequences on the future of the sport in our state. As I have said before, from the perspective of my athletes and my own kids in a vacuum, I am just fine with the current system. However, from a more global perspective of the sport state-wide, our current system really worries me.
  19. At the end of the day, we all agree that an athlete from a small school is, in Yes, and that is why I used West Central as an example. None of us in favor of class wrestling is insisting it can't be done. We and simply pointing out that the hill to climb is steeper the smaller the school you're at.
  20. What about Culver? Caston? Pioneer? South Newton? West Central? etc...
  21. You are correct about IHSAA. As for the community as a whole, we are actually on much better ground that we were ten years ago. The civility of the conversation alone is like another planet from the discussions in 2010, 2011, etc.
