  1. Kids still cut crazy amounts of weight and to think otherwise, you are fooling yourself. I think the days of wearing plastics and drowning in hot tubs are rare (if you want to attribute that to the current weight management program, fine) but I know of kids that, within 24 hours of their last match of the season, increase their weight by more than 13%.
  2. The weight management program, IMO, is a farce. I don't think kids, that want to cut the weight, are even remotely swayed by the parameters put forth in the program. Kids get around the program all the time and very easily and coaches who believe all their kids are living up to the letter and spirit of what it's intended to do (stop dramatic cuts in weight) are kidding themselves. Coaches, IMO, trun a blind eye and kind of have a "don't ask, don't tell" mentality. I'm not saying coaches are doing anything outside the bounds of the rules but if (next season) the same standards were applied to the weight management program that WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) applies to Olympic athletes, we'd see alot of studs up two to three weight classes compared to where they were last season. Am I in favor of this type of application of the program? No! Frankly, kids usually don't cut too much weight to where it will actually stunt their growth or cause them health problems in the future. I do believe that the guy earlier who wrote about the kid that cut from 130/135 to 98 did do harm to himself. I can't believe his kidneys didn't shut down doing something like that. I just wanted to put my two cents in on this topic. Boo away!
  3. I am the youngest of 3 brothers and my middle brother went out for wrestling his sophmore year in h.s. in 1974 (I was 10). This was a big deal because, gowing up on a farm, my dad wasn't to keen on his boys going out for sports and my brother already played football so it was a big deal to be in two sports. When he came home and told us he wanted to wrestle, I immediately thought it was like professional wrestling but really fell in love with it when I went to the first match. This was so long ago that the j.v. guys were wearing the old varsity uni's that had singlets with snaps in the crotch and a little diaper looking thing over the bottom of the singlet. Tights, singlet and diaper! What a hoot!
  4. I dont know Drooke, or his wife, so I wont make a comment on class, but that comment is a softball set up if I ever saw one......... Too easy and it's a family site, after all.
  5. Being above average on your feet is what separates the great ones from the pretty good ones.
  6. Really? You really feel like he's worse than Y2 and Karl'SG"Hungus? Why? Because he doesn't reply with "I'm greater than thou" one liners that Hungus makes or because he doesn't stuff manipulated stats, charts and graphs down our throats like Ross Perot Jr. does? Stats can and are manipulated every day. No question. Frankly, I don't know either Hungus or Y2, never met them so I'm not defending them at all (BTW, thought the Perot Jr comment was hilarious but, unfortunately, I'd guess 5o% of the board is too young to have ever heard of Perot) but Manvswild has kind of gone berserk. He's started or has been commenting on about 50 different threads regarding the evils of class wrestling. If it happens, do you seriously think it's going to be because of Hungus and Y2? I think class wrestling would make IN wrestling better but if it doesn't happen I good with that as well. Wrestling in IN will not thrive or die based on going or not going to classes.
  7. Manvswild - you've made your point. You're not for class wrestling. I think in the short amount of time (3 weeks?) you've made as many, if not more anti class posts than Y2 and Karl have made pro class posts since the inception of this website. Give it a rest! If your greatest concern in life is that IN is going to classes, get on a board, become a coach. Quit fighting the fight here. I know you think this website has been created to only push the class agenda but that's b.s. Nobody but you believes that. You're entertaining and so ridiculous sometimes that I wonder if you're not Y2 trying to stir up some interest in the off season for this website but my suggestion to you (if you really exist) is go someplace warm over spring break, have a drink or two and clam down. The moral underpinnings of society as we know it will not be shattered if IN goes to classes. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly......that's it! Now don't you feel better?
  8. I agree. His comments after the semi were a touch uncalled for. I think he thought he had the championship in the bag but apparently Mr. Caldwell had other plans. Good example to show your kids of how anyone can be beaten on any given day. Now, can we talk about class wrestling on this thread?
  9. How well attended will this weekends HYWAY state tournament in Peru be attended? The Carroll tourney a couple of weeks ago didn't have great attendance but the quality seemed pretty good. Just wondering if the free style tourney's going on will affect the attendance and how is that follow-up tournament in Battle Creek? Pretty ruuged? Or are kids more getting prepped for free style state, etc? And can someone please comment on class wrestling in this thread?
  10. The IN (classless)vs IL (classed) bragging rights matches are cool but I don't think they really help figure which state has better wrestlers. I'd love to see the best IL has to offer (all of their AAA champs) versus all of our champs. Even then, you're not going to get every kids best effort because nothing but "bragging rights" hangs in the balance. And maybe a match like this versus IL wouldn't be a fair comparison because there are so many more people in IL so maybe choose WI , MN or IA something more similar to our population, but take that states largest school champs and put them against our champs. It will never happen but this is why this website exists, to talk about some nonsense from time to time. My guess is that we'd come out on the short end of the stick versus MN and IA but do better against WI.
  11. Agreed. Not all big school champs would go D1 but more than you see now, IMO.
  12. I guess what I would see happening would be the large school champs and multiple top 3/4 place winners would go D1 and wrestle varsity. Small school champs and placers would wrestle more in the D2/D3 schools. I could be wrong but that's what I would see taking place.
  13. I wrestled in IL in the late 70's early 80's. We were a Class A Catholic school (our conference disbanded after my frosh yr) and there were 3 public Class AA schools in our tri-city area. Frankly, the only duals we wrestled against AA competition were those same city schools. Now tourney's were different. We were able to get into a lot of AA ivitational tourney's but not against the best of the best, mostly south suburban chicago AA tourneys. We didn't do the super dual format like is prevalent today but I would agree that a classed system would, during the season, move big schools to wrestle other big schools in their duals as well as super duals. The only thing that would help small schools to schedule big schools for duals would be their intra conference foes. This isn't an argument against class system because, frankly, I think it would make the big schools better in the long run and that would put more IN h.s. wrestlers into D1 programs.
  14. Sure is a gloomy day. I hope the weather gets better.
  15. Manvswild - Love the passion. Think you're giving Y2 a bit too much credit, thinking he can single handedly class Indiana wrestling. I don't think that just becasue some people on a website believe one way, that the IHSAA is going to snap to and change overnight. You're doing a pretty good job of keeping it civil so let 'er rip. Your opinion is just as valid as the next guys.
  16. Howe is great (will probably end up being the best out of IN ever, barring injuries and getting a couple of NCAA championships under his belt). That said, his closely contested matches (Morningstar, for ex) are pretty defensive. I'm guessing his offense will improve as he matures over the next couple of years.
  17. I know what you are saying (non-red shirt) but anyone that wins NCAAs as a freshman red-shirt or not is legit to me. To answer your question not to many, since for a very long time freshman were not allowed to compete at the varsity level in college. Dustin Schlatter did it a couple of years ago. I don't have anyone in recent memory that has done it since. Really cool if Howe can pull it off. Things are lining up for him pretty well on the other side of the bracket. Has to go thru Morningstar one more time to have a shot.
  18. How many legit freshmen have won NCAA championships?
  19. Y2, It would be interesting to see from your stats what % of kids that populate D1 (that come from classed states) are from the large schools.
  20. The class wrestling discussions on this site have tended to focus on what benefit it will bring to small schools and not what it will bring to large schools. It will take a few years to shake out, but, IMO, class wrestling will elevate the larger schools because, in the post season, they'll only be competing against schools of similar size which will elevate the level of competition and create better champs and placers, thus giving them a better opportunity to compete at the natl level in D1. I don't know the numbers but I'd imagine that the number of D1 wrestlers competing at Nationals come from large school classes. There are exceptions to be sure but to bolster my thoughts, look at the 4 time small school champ, LeClere at Iowa. He's not even wrestling varsity. The first 4 time champ in Illinois was a small school kid (Mark Ruetiger) and he was never heard from again after h.s. Again, there will be small school kids that do well at the natl level (Howe doesn't make it into the discussion here because IN is classless) but they are the exception. I agree that the benefit to class wrestling for small schools is that more kids will wrestle in college (smaller programs) because their success will provide them that opportunity and they will come back to IN and populate the coahing ranks. Basically class wrestling all works hand in hand: Big schools will give IN noteriety at the D1 level and small schools will provide great wrestling coaches back at the h.s.'s in IN. I'm not trying to start a big argument with this post, just some rambling thoughts that might spark a civil discussion.
  21. Just finished reading Season On The Mat (Iowa's 1997 run to the NCAA title and Gable's last year as head coach) and I would agree that mental toughness needs to one of the criteria. I've always maintained that mental toughness in wrestling, more than any other sport, is a requisite to success and if not at the top of the list is definitely in the top 3. Gable really preached the mental aspect to his guys going into big meets like the Natl Duals, Midlands and NCAA's. Great book for those of you who haven't read it yet.
  22. Puppies and people who know how a four way stop works.
  23. That's why I think it would be in our best interest to move Team State prior to Individual State. By the time Individual's over, majority of the wrestling community is ready to pack it in. If wrestled prior to Individual's, I think Team State would have more interest because all of the wrestling community would still be in "season mode." If anything the whole thing should be moved to the end of the season so as to avoid injury. Either that, or get rid of it altogether, IMO. boo hoo with the injury thing you risk injury during the regular season we should get rid of that too, or just hold it after state. and offseason wrestling thats the biggest risk of all.... You have captured my mood perfectly. Tears were streaming down my cheeks as I was typing that post. I understand you're from Mishawaka and you will forever adore the team competition but so few of the schools in the state actually have a chance that, to me, it holds very little true significance. Tears are splashing on the keyboard as I type this post, just so you know.
