  1. Awards for this event include: 1. Top 4 Teams receive trophies. 2. 2nd place team receives award for each wrestler 3. 1st place team receives custom t-shirt for each wrestler 4. Certificates for undefeated wrestlers in each weight class 5. 2 outstanding wrestlers will be voted on by coaches at this event (trophies)
  2. Sir Havoc, My recommendation would be to start a wrestling team at your son's charter school. I would think there would be other kids at his school that might be interested in the sport of wrestling. For the short term, your son will have to enter individually formatted wrestling tournaments. Coach McCormick
  3. We would rather not have 2 middle schools in same district combine kids to make one team. This would be an unfair advantage over schools that simply have one middle school in their district. The spirit (and intent) of this event is to have teams made up with the kids attending the same school. Most every team in last year's event had a few studs, many average wrestlers, some below average wrestlers and a couple of forfeits. This is your typical middle school line-up. If we allow 2 or more schools from the same district to combine forces, then this puts single school teams at a distinct disadvantage. With that being said, there are unique situations around the state. For example, Middle School A in Wrestlingville, IN has a middle school team, but Middle School B in the same school district does not sponsor a middle school team but there are kids that go to Middle School B who wrestle. We would most likely allow the wrestlers from MS B to wrestle on MS A's team at this event given the situation. If a coach has a unique situation like this, please contact me and we will explore our options. Coach McCormick

  9. This is a reminder for all middle schools across Indiana of our 2nd Annual Indiana Middle School Team State Duals event which will be held at Yorktown Middle School on Saturday, January 8, 2011. Last year, Franklin came away as the champions of the inaugaral event. Currently, we have early commitments from Franklin, Yorktown and Avon for this season's event. The age requirement has been relaxed for this event. Please see our ad on Indianamat for the new guidelines which simply state the participants simply need to currently be enrolled in the the 6th - 8th grade to wrestle in this event. The entry fee is $200 per team which equates to $10 per wrestler for a team of 20 wrestlers. Weight Classes: 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115, 125, 135, 145, 155, 165 and HWT (max 225). There are also "All State" certificates presented at this event as well as 2 Outstanding Wrestler awards. For more information or to enter this event, contact Trent McCormick (Yorktown) at 765-282-9136 or tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us
  10. I just received unofficial word that Kyle Mosier (Yorktown/Purdue) won his weight class in the Frosh/Soph division at Michigan State open.
  11. Coach Hollenbaugh - thank you for your efforts in coordinating a neat idea and making it reality! Certainly, rankings are not a trophy or a tournament, but it is a nice start to maybe a bigger picture. It will definitely be interesting to see how many small schools support and have input into this concept as a first step toward future projects. I think these small school rankings will publicize some much needed recognition and make for some interesting conversation. If indeed these "classed" rankings get off the ground, it would be nice if coaches from all size schools posted them up in their wrestling room and shared them in team information within their program for all to see and talk about. Wrestling coaches are some of the most fiercly competitive individuals I know, but I also know many, many wrestling coaches across this state who genuinely care about Indiana wrestling as a whole and find enjoyment in accomplishments made by others. The IHSWCA officers, regional reps and team state committee meet tomorrow (Sunday) in Indianapolis. This will be one of the major topics discussed at this meeting. I think it is safe to say that the proposed "classed rankings" that are being discussed on the message board will be part of the dialogue in tomorrow's meeting and hopefully be able to be incorporated into our campaign. Coach McCormick

  13. I certainly agree with most everything that has been brought up on this thread regarding Team State. The reality is that the IHSAA has already made up their mind. I base this comment on conversations I have had with administrators who have recently attended IHSAA regional meetings across Indiana. The IHSAA has handed out a spread sheet which documents the decline in revenue (and interest) in our Team State format. The last e-mail that I saw from the IHSAA several days ago said, "2010-11 will be the last year for the Team State. The new format will go into affect 2011-12." There are several variables that must be considered on this topic, and I don't think we will ever get all parties involved to agree on one solution. I truly believe that if the Team State Duals series were "classed"; we would see an explosion of excitement, increased revenue and increased interest in our duals series. As mentioned in another post, the current Team State series is really a race between about 6 schools year in and year out. All you need to do is look at the results since the inception of this event to support this statement. Again, as mentioned earlier, someone said, "the same set of schools vie for the 5A football title every year." The difference is that there are 4 other classes where there is tremendous excitement and many, many schools get a shot at winning the 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A football titles each year. The classed football system works as it offers hope and equitable opportunity for schools of all sizes across our state. There are a number of other variables that will impact our sport in the near future. Things such as increased budget cuts, more lay coaches, the cutting of middle school wrestling programs are just a few that come to mind. I am not going to say that any one person is wrong for the way they feel about our post season structure. I see some value in everyone's comments. I, personally, have seen this topic from many angles too. I was part of Delta's 1985 team state title when we won it with 3 placers (a 1st, 3rd and 4th). I have been a varsity coach for 22 years with 18 of those as a lay coach. I, and my coaching staff, work 365 days a year to keep our dreams alive of winning a team title some day. Wrestling in the Team State finals was a great experience this past season, but with 700 students in our school, I can tell you right up front that achieving this feat on a regular basis will be difficult as we just don't have the numbers to "reload" every year like bigger schools. In the end the tournament is "owned" by the IHSAA. They don't seem to care what those in the trenches have to say on the matter. I wish our state AD association would step up and take more of a stand on issues of this nature, but it seems to me that the IHSAA has a "checks and balances" system that, let's just say, favors the IHSAA's decisions at the end of every meeting. I have had some great conversations of late with coaches about other "controllables" in our sport. I would also like to point out that Cale Hoover has done a nice job of walking the tight rope with regard to the IHSAA during his tenure as president of the IHSWCA. He is not to blame for the direction in which our post season tournament is headed. The IHSWCA officers have made presentations and suggestions to the IHSAA, but again, in the end the IHSAA has the final say so. As the next president of our coaches' association, I plan to focus on the "controllables" in an attempt to strengthen wrestling in Indiana as a whole.
  14. None of the Team Duals series debate is going to matter much in short order. The Team Duals series is going away very quickly. Coach McCormick
  15. Yorktown Results from Sunshine State Games in Winter Haven, Florida on Sunday, June 20 This was a USA Wrestling sanctioned event hosted by FAWA and held at Polk State College. There were primarily 3 states represented at this event: Florida, Indiana and Texas. Great job Tigers! It was a fun day of wrestling. 16. My son, Cael, will be attending the Golden Cross camp for the first time this year. In my research of the camp I have heard nothing but good things about the camp. Coach Zerkle wrestled for and was one of Jeff Jordan's assistant coaches at Graham HS before setting out to make a name for himself as a head coach in Ohio. I also know that Casey Stouffer (Mount St. Joseph College Head Coach) will be present at the camp. Casey is an A-1, top notch man. He wrestled high school in Indiana, before wrestling in college and the US/World circuit. Beyond technique, I would trust my son's well-being and care with either of these gentlemen. Cael is looking forward to attending the Golden Cross camp after he is finished with the Prime Time camp in New Castle. Coach McCormick
  17. Although the Prime Time camp roster has hit 90 campers, we will still be accepting applications through the end of May. For any further questions, feel free to contact Coach McCormick at 765-282-9136. A reminder that our guest clinicians this year include Coach Seltzer (Head Coach at Elkhart Memorial), Coach Williams (Head Coach at Lawrence North), Ed Pendoski (CIA) and Jordin Humphrey (Humphrey Wrestling). Coach McCormick
  18. Corey Shie - Novice 75 folkstyle national champion from Cincinnati will be attending the Prime Time Camp Corey is also a triple crown winner in Ohio.
  19. PT camp roster at 65 campers. See updated list on this thread. We will certainly accept campers through the end of May as we do each year. For any further questions please contact Trent McCormick at 765-282-9136. Coach McCormick
  20. Chase Wilson (Princeton) at Novice 80 hit a beautiful 5 point throw. This was an impressive throw as his technique was perfect! You typically don't see young wrestlers hit a "5" under control. His lift and back arch were executed flawlessly.
  21. Yorktown will host the 2nd annual Middle School Wrestling State Duals in 2011. CHANGES 1. We have moved this event to a Saturday, so middle school teams will be able to officially compete. Saturday, January 8th. 2. It will be held at Yorktown Middle School.
  22. In no particular order but all very influential Jim Humphrey - Has coached kids at all levels in Indiana (and beyond) for decades. Wealth of knowledge. Bob Kopnisky - Has coached at several colleges around the country before settling in IN. Then was willing to share his knowledge after coming here. Also contributed to ISWA in coaching development. Mike and Sharon Dowden - Have guided the ISWA for many, many years. In doing so, they have provided opportunities for many wrestlers, coaches, officials and others in our sport. Jan and Sue Hesser - Ambassadors from IN in the area of mat officiating and pairings. Have shared their knowledge from the grass roots level to the Olympic level. Dave and Jenny Errett - Same credentials as Hesser's. Phil Strader - Coach and visionary with respect to program, athlete and coaches' development. John Smith - I believe the only man in IN to win a state title himself (2), coach a high school team to a state title (Muncie Southside-1990) and then go on to work the state finals as a mat official.
  23. I received my copy of "The Ultimate Guide to Wrestling Camps" this past week. I was quite excited to find that Mr. Krumrie had indeed incorporated our interview on "youth camps" into his recently published book. What excites me the most is that his book answers the very questions that numerous people have asked me over the years.... 1. Is my son old enough to go to camp? 2. Which camp should I choose? 3. Where do I look to research youth wrestling camps? 4. How much should I spend to send my son/daughter to wrestling camp? Our interview is called a Case Study and covers such questions as the ones mentioned above and a number of other topics surrounding wrestling camps and what young wrestlers should expect to gain from their experience. Mr. Krumrie is the former editor of TheWrestlingMall.com and has contributed work to W.I.N. Magazine, The Guillotine and Intermatwrestle.com. He has been a guest on Takedownradio.com and has also covered numerous NCAA Division I wrestling championships. His book covers a variety of topics and issues surrounding youth wrestling camps. He has included in his book interviews with college coaches, high school coaches and a number of other individuals from the sport of wrestling who weigh in on this topic. The book is very well put together and is a quick read at just over 100 pages. For further information on his book, go to wrestlingcampguide.com I do want to point out for the record that I have not nor will not receive any proceeds from Mr. Krumrie's book. I am simply impressed that someone has put together what I think is a quality book that answers many questions and offers philosophy on the various aspects of wrestling camps for kids. Okay, I will admit that I am a little bit proud that he mentions the Prime Time wrestling camp in his book! Coach McCormick
