  1. Just cruel to mention it in front of @Thor. The nasty headlock fell short this year for South Adams unfortunately. On the brightside, we have a BAGUBA(Jet), Brave, and Knight of Norwell in the medal rounds. Hope a Tiger, Patriot, & Bulldog join them at minimum.

  2. Bracket wise would be the highest ranked 1 gets the lowest ranked 4 regardless of semi state & based on an agreed upon ranking system. Keep the formula (in essence of ranking 1 to 16 per weight class with Semi state champs 1-4, SS runner ups 5-8, SS 3rd placers 9-12, & SS 4th placers 13-16).

The answer to changing the IHSAA leaderships minds is quite easy… lots of $$$.

The IHSAA like the NCAA has proven itself useless. The NCAA on a functional level makes more sense due  to the national scale but it clearly governs poorly. I think every state should really begin to question the validity of their athletic governing bodies.

Amen on the bolded! I've been quite vocal in regards to the IHSAA & OHSAA (due to my state line living situation) not handling things properly.

Should be standard policy to remind the table help that they are next to a live mic. I heard one scorer today say "I hope he pins his a$*" before a match.  I'm all for friendly banter among hometown folks but thought that was really over the line

Why I like the overhead view & not mat side. Officials from last match in front of the cameras of the one taking place on the mat. Missed action on the edge of the mat. Very sad how many people posted on social media about how the local webcasts obliterated yesterday's coverage. Let the people decide with supply & demand!

Had all 4 mats on one screen a couple years back from the local webcast. Now switching mat to mat for all 4. Anything I'm missing to put all 4 on 1 screen or is it not an option?

  6. Very normal. It's the highest of highs and lowest of lows. The closer to winning it all, the worse it gets especially if that is the expectation. The football playoffs this past year was a prime example. Watching the AC football team make it back to state was awesome, but the pain of falling just short hurt badly. I feel it to a lesser extent with my youth wrestlers on weekends. Especially my stepson and his 2 close friends that wrestle for the club. Also any other relation as well in their endeavors. My biological kids when/if they compete will be very stressful.

i think it's really important for the coaches to set expectations for the parents. Letting them know where and when they should bring their kids and setting those kids and parents up for success, in my opinion, is on the coaches. I think parents see a schedule put out by a club and they just assume that they need to follow it. I do think it is important to have beginner level events, duals, and individual tournies on the schedule and i think they all offer their pros and cons. But ultimately, i think the coaches play a vital role in assuring the right kids are going to the right events. Once again, this is just my opinion and i could be all jacked up.

Not wrong at all. What I'm dealing with in a way. The sport is new for the MS & HS (Ohio) in a basketball favored school. The club has been around a few years longer, but has went through coaching & organization changes due to the HS & MS getting started. They truly scraped the bottom of the barrel having to resort to me coaching or possibly no club or very limited. The big thing is if one sibling is wrestling at the event then the parents feel the sibling(s) should too. Not totally wrong, but some events have been geared for older & others younger. This weekend for example, it may have been more beneficial if some of our kids went to Defiance and the remainder to Edgerton. Biggest problem though is finding enough coaching help and not having to split up families let alone the club/team. I'm just trying to think how families newer to wrestling may want to keep their kids in the sport & to grow it.

how dare someone not be perfect.  idiot humans.

No one is condoning bad behavior. The issue is the official had history similar to this prior with the same coaching staff. I'm an AC fan, so it was a benefit for the school I follow, but it was a bad call. (Not going to find much love for the Bellmont fans & coaching staff from me, but I will wish their wrestlers best of luck because they are local kids.) My issue is more with the system (IHSAA) & lack of technology being used today. Since it's hard to get officials, it wouldn't hurt to get technology to review calls. If you can stream a webcast and have at least 1 if not 2 radio stations broadcasting, then you can surely have replay. If you can't tell, I'm not a big fan of the IHSAA, OHSAA, & NFHS as a whole. A lot could be done to move into the 21st century in their regards.

Team duals have the following drawbacks

    1. Limited number of wrestlers participating. If you have 5 80lbers, only one, maybe two can wrestle.

    2. Coaches looking to stack teams, thus stunting development of the newer kids

Weeknight friendlies that run for about 2 hours are ideal for beginning wrestlers.

Much of the turn-off of wrestling isn't the kids, it's the parents who have to sit in the bleachers for 12 hours for three matches.

Agree on those drawbacks, but if you as a host become a stickler about matchups & number of matches, you can avoid some. Though it does run the risk of driving some clubs away for future events. However if they're more concerned about winning than teaching skills, maybe it isn't bad running those off. Think having 2 groups prek/K-2nd and 3rd-5th/6th as separate groups would help as well.

  10. the right answer? As I head off to coach today in Edgerton Ohio I'm questioning this. Participation is hit or miss due to location on these tournaments for our club. Then you have the brackets drawn based on paper forms that you hope are filled out honestly for skills & abilities. Some kid just learning somehow get lumped in with a kid who has been wrestling since diaper stage. Learning kid quickly gets discouraged and mom & dad& etc get turned off as well. This is after an hour drive and finding seating. Then depending on how well the host site does, trying to figure out when & what mat they're wrestling on. Coaches scrambling to make sure wrestlers are at the mat when they should be (some kids have small bladders or big stomachs lol).

Meanwhile the team dual events are much different. Everyone knows their mat assignment and fans can follow each wrestler one by one. Instead of the prior where dad's watching mat 1, mom mat 2, and grandma & grandpa on 3 and/or 4 at the same time as each kid in age bracket is up. The team aspect fires up the kids to support their teammates & friends. Fans get into it more as it's their school/club/community vs another.

Back to the individual aspect, I love the Friday Night Rivals in Adams, Wells, & Jay Counties. For those not familiar, you wrestle as an individual but you match up with kids in similar age, weight, & then skill (if possible). You wrestle as many times as you want/can for 2hrs. Their is no awards, just working on skills & techniques. So much nicer than having a kid wrestle 10 seconds in 2 matches in a double elimination bracket an hour plus away as others weren't beginners as they claimed.

  11. So when do they post the regional official assignments? We know the wrestlers & brackets if everyone is healthy & makes weight. See if the proposed snow storm raises weights. Also the IHSAA needs to explain why there isn't wrestlebacks at regional and beyond! We need a legitimate answer and not the same bs. Surprised no one from there hasn't came and asked everyone to become officials since the bashing. That's another bs line that drives me nuts. If you sign up to do the job, you take what comes with it, both positively and negatively.

  12. Random question, but why is JC the host for sectional? They do a good job, but since they host regional, I'd figure the state would spread the wealth. South Adams based on location makes sense. Jay County for regionals & location make sense. Is it due to size or bidding? Just random question I've had for years.

I've heard the official in question has not been highly thought of in other events. Like I said, this is all from the shortage. Guess we have this or no wrestling at all unfortunately. Had a basketball ref stop mid game today bc of getting questioned by both coaches let alone fans. OHSAA & IHSAA licensing standards across ALL SPORTS just to get enough to participate.

The main problems were with guys doing it for a long time. One guy flaunted his 41 years in wrestling to try to prove a point that he was obviously wrong on.

One of the best officials in our dual tournament in Ohio, which AC (my alma mater) was at as well, was the HS wrestler from Wayne Trace who is the defending state champ in D3. They were all decent at Wayne Trace compared to others. The old long time one in Liberty Center Ohio did not impress me. The big problem is the old quality guys are retired and the older guys a notch below are still at it. Plus the young guys just there for the paycheck. You can always spot the motives of all.

Still was shocked the refs mad a push for a team title also!

I heard on the radio how bad it was. I was stuck in Ohio for girl's youth basketball tournament. Doesn't matter the sport or age level, the officiating has been declining rapidly. I'm no superstar athlete or coach, but I do coach youth wrestling in Ohio & our club has been doing a few rivals nights in Indiana. Think the HS kids have done just as well as some licensed officials in both states in numerous sports. I don't want to be too critical as we need officials. However I think the certifications may be achieved too easily bc of the shortages. Not enough time in my schedule to coach & officiate. I'd not be a top notch, but I hope I wouldn't miss some of the obvious things. My FIL has no clue about wrestling but even he questioned things to me that were not legal. Same goes for basketball today where traveling made the NBA traveling look small in comparison.
