Purdue is going to look nearly identical to this year's squad. Hopefully they can bring in some transfers to plug some holes. Right now, the only guy leaving the starting lineup is Marcos Polancos at 149.
125 - Matt Ramos, once again should be an AA/possible national title threat.
133 - Dustin Norris, it will be his third year in the starting lineup. Hopefully he's healthy, I think his a qualifier last year if not for shoulder issues
141 - Greyson Clark, national qualifier as a true freshman back in the lineup, should be improved
149 - Jayden Reynolds, probably Reynolds as the starter, wouldn't mind a portal pickup here
157 - Joey Blaze, had a bad tournament, but an very good season for a true freshman at a tough middle weight. Should be an AA threat the rest of his career. Hopefully his brother joins him
165 - Stoney Buell, national qualifier as a sophomore, should be better as an upperclassman
174 - Brody Baumann, national qualifier as a redshirt freshman back in the lineup, should be improved
184 - James Rowley, highly regarded recruit, hopefully shows a lot of improvement. Still young for an upperweight
197 - Ben Vanandia, really want a portal pickup here. Heard he's lazy and shows disinterest in wrestling and Purdue could use an upgrade.
285 - Tristan Ruhlman, wouldn't mind a portal pickup here. I like Ruhlman, but he's not developing to the kind of guy you need manning heavyweight in the Big Ten. Maybe Hayden Copass can make a comeback, but I think he's medically retired from wrestling
Purdue could definitley use some portal help in spots. The problem is there's no one in the portal that would be a noticeable upgrade that Purdue could actually afford. And hopefully another year in the room gets these boys a lot better. Hopefully this young core works out.

I'm glad Carroll is back down to 97kg and hopefully is looking at 197 next year. He tried to get bigger to wrestle heavyweight, but he just does not have the frame for it. He looked pudgy and uncomfortable. He'd be much better suited getting leaner and going 197.

Is the only option to weigh-in for ISWA freestyle state on Friday night? No potential Saturday morning weigh-ins? We're starting to work on kids doing a freestyle season, but most of them also run track, and that Friday night is the ACAC conference track meet. I'm thinking they just may be screwed for doing state.

Georgia, Arizona, and Virginia love having as many classes as possible. I can't even imagine trying to rank seven classes of wrestling, that would be a disaster.
Imagine all the profiles you would have on the site, 7 times as many as you have now. Sheesh. I would have a profile on here, and most of my wins came from the other team being too scared to send someone out.

Georgia is moving up quickly!!! They have some dudes!!!! With that said, they have 7 classes in high school. Our class wrestling advocates, need to research their recent success and bring that to the class wrestling debate! @Thor
At the youth level they had Compound. I still see Minons. Lately.. Roundtree has been really tough. These dudes are tough as HELL.
Ugh, it is two weeks til tax day, I don't think I have the energy for this right now.....
But I looked it up anyway, and my gosh their websites and state brackets stress me out. Even if they had a GeorgiaMat it would be hell figuring that system out. Still can't figure out what the order is from biggest to smallest. Caleb Henson was 5A, which helps me none.
Either way, 7 is way too many divisions. Georgia had 1246 state qualifiers this year! That's insane! I just want two classes, or more qualifiers with wrestlebacks.

125 - Christian Mejia
133 - Cayden Rooks
141 - Jesse Mendez
149 - Graham Rooks
157 - Brayton Lee
165 - Johnathan Kervin
174 - Brody Baumann
184 - DJ Washington
197 - Silas Allred
285 - Lucas Davison
Mostly our D-1 guys, but there were a couple that could be starters on that list that are already behind studs. Blubaugh and Streck would be good starters for this team if we didn't already have Allred and Davison.

Also interesting side note, possible 8-9 year age gap between true freshmen and some of these seniors.
Personally not a fan of this at all. Hopefully this doesn't become a common trend.
Covid years die out this year or next year.

I don't know. Ramos is just not the Ramos of last year, nor does he seem like the Ramos we saw part of this year. At his best, he could be up 10-1 going into the second period on any of these guys. Why does he so rarely attack these days? Then his defense is good--but not the best on the planet. So he can get scored on and get matches stolen from him by guys that aren't nearly on his talent level. What gives?? Is he cutting too much for 125 at this point?
Anyway...the truth is, if he can get past the quarters and face Davis and Ayala--I think he can still get it done. He'd be back in that underdog role he loves so much, and there's a good chance attack-mode could come back out.
Honestly, I think that's just who he is as a wrestler. He very rarely blows guys out, even going back to last year. His run last year included three extremely tight matches before pinning Lee. He talks about letting it fly, but he rarely ever does against solid guys. He gets those takedowns so easily in the first and then doesn't go back and stalls, but no clue why he does it but that's his style at this point. I just wish he'd get two takedowns so I'm not so stressed.

Fellas … if you didn’t pick #12 at 157 Andonian “the funk” you haven’t watched NCAA Nationals past few years and as I type this he knocks off #5 seed .
Wanted to pick him, but he's looked rough this year due to injuries. Hasn't looked like himself for weeks. Glad to see he's more healthy now and back to his funky ways, definitely one of the most fun guys to watch in college.

Boilers had a rough showing yesterday. Ramos gets to the quarters by getting a first period takedown then stalling to a win. Greyson Clark is the last one going on to today, but barely. Baumann had a rough day going 0-2. Scored 9 points in the first period of his second match then proceeded to lose 13-9. He's done that a few times this year, maybe he has a gas tank issue? Or running too hot too fast? Buell looked awful, getting teched and then pinned after being up early. Blaze just had a bad tournament wrestling like he has all year. He has won a lot of close matches and they just didn't go his way yesterday.
Still think there's a bright future for these guys. Purdue is trotting out one of the youngest teams in the country once again. Blaze has wins over two guys wrestling in the quarters today and Buell has another. Baumann and James Rowley still redshirt freshmen and Dustin Norris is a promising sophomore that just needs to heal up. Let's get Ramos a title this weekend, get Marcus Blaze to commit, and keep moving forward.

A lot of people picking Starocci as their wildcard, myself included. He definitely has the most potential to go from a low seed to champ just because of how the seeding committee messed this bracket up. But there is also a good chance he's too injured to wrestle, loses to Mehki Lewis, and just defaults out due to injury. Very boom or bust here, but hope he's healthy enough to make a run.
-
This was pretty fun to break down brackets to get guys in the right seeds. Got to a point where I loved every pick but Colton Hawks, but I still like it.
Weight Wrestler Seed 125 Matt Ramos 4 133 Vito Arujau 6 141 Wyatt Henson 12 149 Austin Gomez 6 157 Levi Haines 1 165 David Carr 4 174 Carter Starrocci 9 Wildcard 184 Colton Hawks 11 197 Silas Allred 10 285 Greg Kerkvliet 1 -
Brody Baumann will be advancing. He lucks out in having Carter Starrocci in the to go round, who is forfeiting out of Big Tens due to his knee.

Bollenbacher should have definitely been in over Liscano with the win at semi state.
Either way, both should have at least been notified. Not sure the steps that got missed, but we now have a guy that lost first round of semi state and a guy down from 150 at the 144 spot that was a ticket rounder. I'm just saying, something is off here. Not saying Colt is the best senior 144 in the state, but if the guys ahead of him actively said no, then he deserves a chance to get the spot. Same with Liscano, like if they are able to and weren't contacted that sucks.

Everything you are saying is correct...however, at a small school, it is difficult in good conscience to truly push kids to wrestle to get better in the spring. They are busy making sure our baseball, softball, track, and golf teams are as competitive as possible. How would I feel if the baseball coach was leveraging the wrestlers to start tuning their arms up in January? It would p*@# me off. And of course big schools also share athletes. However, if the wrestlers at small schools focus on one sport, the other sports don't do poorly - they cease to exist. Small schools are playing a differnt game. That's why team sports are classed. There is no difference for individual sports. Everyone has to block another individual in football. Everyone has to mark another individual in soccer. You get where I am going here.
This something we are coming to as a program and it's a weird situation I struggle with. The past two years the football team has started winter workouts right around the time team state starts up and goes until they start summer workouts, which pisses me off cause now I have football players struggling to finish the season because now their focus is shifting to an easier sport that they like more. But who am I to call it out when I have guys wrestling during track season, and we encourage guys to wrestle during the fall. Every program is fighting for attention for about 20-30 guys.

This is a choice you are making. Your son participates in multiple sports for his school. That is great. But it is a choice you are making.
I don't see a difference in athletes in either case. We can't blame the wrestler at any school for focusing on one sport while another athlete is making a choice to participate in several sports. Is this a loyalty issue then? Loyalty/pressure for the athlete to do multiple sports because they go to a smaller school? If they want to be multisport athletes, awesome, but the trade-off will likely be not reaching the level of performance that the athletes that focus on a single sport may achieve. There are always exceptions.
I wonder if Weaver from Rosseville only focused on wrestling.... That is a small school and his size would have been welcomed in many other sports. But did he choose to focus on wrestling in order to become a champ and prepare for the college level?
Weaver would be an animal at football if Rossville had a football team.
