  2. XCard, I completely agree that every school running a tournament is doing so to improve women’s wrestling. The benefit for wrestlers competing in a tournament is that the final match they wrestle should be against someone of similar wrestling ability. When #1 and #2 meet in the first or second round the girls in the consolations are not getting matches that will improve their wrestling.

  3. The growth of girls wrestling over the past decade has been amazing and I believe it has grown exponentially this year, but not having tournaments seeded is ridiculous. Numerous times this year I have seen state ranked girls meet in the first or second round, resulting in a wrestler only being able to achieve a finish of 5th place.
This weekend in a weight class of 35 wrestlers, the #2 and #8 wrestled in a first round match in one of three 16 man brackets. This match up was brought to the attention of the tournament director and he said “This is the last bracket we are building and we are doing our best.”
If a tournament is seeded properly then the placement rounds should be the most competitive and beneficial matches for the girls.

    This has to improve!

    potential semis match up

    #7 white vs #9 Robinson

And the winner could face 30-0 stud freshman Brevan Thrine in the finals if the seeds play out accordingly.. Best of luck to everybody this weekend.

Does the conference not use sectional seeding criteria?  Seems to me it should be White vs Thrine in the semi’s

I understand the whole concept of ONE state champion, but in the best states (IA, IL, MN, OH, PA) you see three in all of these minus PA. Having more than one state champion doesn’t make you any less of a state champion. If that’s the case, put every college in one division and see how they fare.

I am pretty sure if you have more than one state champion, by the laws of mathematics it makes you less of a state champion.

  6. To take some of the subjectivity out of this debate..

Who has beaten the most State Champions in their high school career but did not win state?

I see a lot of guys mentioned above who were very good high school wrestlers with multiple state medals, but never beat anyone who won it all.  I think to be on the list you had to have beaten several guys who were good enough to win it all.

I'll throw Aaron Sessa's name in the hat.  Wins over State Champions Brennan Cosgrove, Fernando Martinez, and Javier Salas in his career.

    Who else?

I believe Jeff Pease has five stop signs.
