  1. You forgot to add wrestlebacks. Nothing more snowflaky than wrestlebacks.
  2. He's real. It's Mclovin's cousin from Hawaii.
  3. Steve,. I moved her about 12 years ago. I lived 4 years in Ohio and my older son wrestled in Ohio out of the Sandusky area. I attended a few State tournaments at OSU. Really fun time and great environment.. Also wrestled in Kansas and Missouri. I've seen a lot of state tournaments. When I moved to Indiana, I also said WTF, the state qualification process is bizarre. Being hear 12 years, I still ponder a lot on why they do it and realize they will never change. Here's my conclusions on why Indiana does it. 1. The Indiana State qualifying system has the "Hoosier Syndrome" DNA built into it. See the movie Hoosiers. The whole point is belief is one class and one champion. If you have one champion, and If you lose early in a qualifying round then were not the best and continuing to contend for placement is irrelevant and waste of time. 2. At some point in time, the Indiana legislature dictated to the IHSAA that it is not ok to miss school for sports participation. As you notice the whole very long state series takes place on weekends. With a one class state system, and to have full wrestle backs, you would to extend the tournament to weekdays requiring the missing of missinv of school which is strongly against IHSAA philosophy. 3. Basketball dominates Indiana and to some degree football. The IHSAA executive board who could make changes to the qualification format is made up of athletic directors from Indiana High Scools. Most of these board members have Basketball backgrounds and some football. I'm not aware of any former wrestling coaches. These sports do not have the equivalent of wrestle backs and have also have the one loss you're done philosophy ingrained into their beliefs. They do not believe in double elimination (strong bias at the IHSAA) and are offended that wrestling requests it. Our wrestling committee who presents rule changes was directed to not use the term wrestle backs when requesting policy change. Wrestle backs even though an integral part of wrestling is a dirty word at the IHSAA. 4. The Legacy of sudden death and no wrestle backs is ingrained into the wrestling community in Indiana. A majority of people would love to see wrestle backs, but a large minority of people love the Indiana tradition. When they participated, they had to deal with the unfairness of the luck of the draw. Why should younger kids get the benefit of dealing with wrestle backs. 5. The randomness of sudden death is entertaining. People love the ticket round and seeing two highly ranked kids meet knowing somebody is going home unfairly. It creates drama. I've made the same argument you did that the consolation semi final ticket round is just as exciting to no avail. If you thought the semi state quarter finals were unfair. Wait till the state tournament. You have kids to through the gauntlet of qualifying for the state tournament. Then half of the kids lose and are done. Although entertaining, I get a dirty feeling of unfairness. Why does Indiana want to bring the best talent in the state for a showcase, but try to shorten it for the least of among of wrestling they can get. It never made sense to me. Anyway I'm personally biased as my son's lost in one of those close ticket round matches at semi state and wish he had the benefit of a wrestleback. It just isn't right if you're a traditional wrestling can.
  4. I I was hoping for a preview. If I t doesn't come soon it's a review
  5. I think what you say makes sense. I think this is more prevalent than it was 10 years ago partially due to the population growth in the Indy Suburbs which is making the Indy are a little stronger every year, thus the New Castle SS is stronger. Yes, its much more difficult to get out of New Castle. This is the same reason Evansville is getting stronger with the increased growth of the Southern and Western Indy suburbs. And if we follow a trend, well see more of the same with New Castle getting stronger and more unbalanced. I like the idea of moving some schools up I-69. Eventually something going to have to happen. Heres and idea. Im recommending the Ohio method in dividing up state qualifers out of SS. Ohio although classed, divides its state into 4 districts for qualification to the state tournament similar to our semi-states. Basically its geopgraphically divided into 4 quadrants. But the population in these quadrants is unequal. The northeastern quadrant or district is much more heavily populated with Cleveland and burbs, Youngstown and Canton. The Northwestern District is much less populated with only Toledo as the major city. So to equalize things, the Northeastern district gets 5 qualifiers while the Northwestern district only gets 3 state qualifiers. It works out fine. So how do we apply that to Indiana? New Castle with the significantly higher enrollment population would get 5 qualifiers while Fort Wayne would only get 3 state qualifiers. You would still have the same 16 man brackets at state. Maybe you would pack in our out some schools to get a ratio of enrollment of 3 to 5. You might also have to pack or move to ensure East Chicago got 25% of the enrollment and Evansville got 25% of the enrollment, New Castle would have 31.25% of enrollment and Fort Wayne would have 18.75%. You could also do a ratio of qualifiers at the regional level when there was a disparity. Bigger enrollment sectionals like yours would get 5 SS qualifiers while less populated ones would get only 3. You probably would see similar ratios to the quotas Maligned generates for this qualifier. I know this wouldn't go over well with Fort Wayne SS and im not sure how it would effect small schools, but it would help some and hurt others.
  6. What it is, free school lunch programs? I have a feeling the annual "C_ _ _ _ Wrestling argument is on the horizon and Galagore is lock and loaded.
  7. I can see where you're coming from. Being stuck in the Frankfort Sectional which Clinton Central is in is a bear trap. You have 4 really big 4a schools and couple medium size schools followed with four small schools. You look at sectional placing and it pretty much follows school enrollment size with big schools dominating and little schools at the bottom. Its probably frustrating to see locals small schools close to you that you compete well with that get placed in the Peru, Twin Lakes, L Jeff , Crawfordsville sectionals, and they have markedly more success. I think when sectionals are drawn up, they're more concerned with lower mileage as compared to overall balance. To your point they could even things out more in sectionals but you're still restrained by the geography of the state. Just a quick fact, total enrollment of 10 teams at the Frankfort sectional was 16,646 and compare that to the 12 teams in the Twin Lakes sectional which had total enrollment of 6,104. I think you're making more of a class wrestling argument when you say small schools don't succeed because of post season success, Because most small schools eventually get caught up with the big schools at regional or SS. To disagree with Indy Sports Fan, I think the daunting affect of a Clinton Central or Rossville having to face Carmel or Hamilton Southeastern every year could be discouraging and ultimately could affect participation or effort. Experiencing failure is a good thing to learning and developing character, but kids are also smart and they know it when they face overwhelming odds. It can affect their effort and participation. It just doesn't come down to if we try harder, well end up winning.
  8. Bulldog, The percentages didn't look right to me in the L Jeff and Twin Lakes. I had to over analyze being the scholar an actually counted for myself. I had a little different results. I came up with a 63% for Lafayette Jeff to 37% for Twin Lakes sectional qualifying to SS. Its not as balanced as you said. See results below by year. LJ TL 2010 35 21 2011 35 21 2012 25 31 2013 32 24 2014 37 19 2015 35 21 2016 37 19 2017 36 20 2018 38 18 2019 38 18 2020 37 19 385 231
  9. I don't know if this counts, but there was a Bigfoot sighting near the Wabash and Tippecanoe river near Lafayette in 1996. Lets see the Region top that.
  10. Even with the $10 off special at the Florida Calabash Buffet and a Matlock marathon weekend down in Florida, you're expecting to see the Rat at East Chicago? With his lungs healthy after breathing years of pollution free sea air, I hope he doesn't have a setback after taking in the East Chicago notorious refinery air. Which also brings up a good point. With the Rat gone, who's taking up the responsibility of providing the public service announcement of giving us a list of the finer things in the Region area like that really good Taco restaurant or that Bar-B-Que restaurant On the Rise likes? The Scholar personally want to know where the best Italian Beef is in the Region? The biggest drawback of going to ECC from Merrilville was that Merrillville had a Portillo's right down the street. Right? Of course, even in the unlikely case of some of the wrestlers from the Logansport regional might lose early and aren't as familiar with the area, what are some of the entertainment options in the area? Didn't the Region Rat have a list of some very cultural and wholesome educating museums and other family entertainment located around the region area? ECC always is a fun day. Maybe a slim outside chance the Scholar could even convince his wife to drive up to the Region and watch some good wrestling. I still owe On the Rise Tacos. Ill at least have the region broadcast of the SS on my phone looking forward to hearing Mike's call.
  11. In your original post you were only talking about sectional success. As you mentioned , they barely sent anybody to the Northmont Regional. I agree they wouldn't have done as well as they did at Logansport. But their team was significantly improved. And as a result of coach Douglass working hard with a good core of kids with his son at the nucleus, they still would have sent 3 to 4 kids to New Castle semi state. But they would have had more success at sectional in Crawfordsville. Just because a few more kids made SemiState due to a weak regional is not why they had improved success.
  12. I don't know if the Attica example makes sense. Attica moved from Crawfordsville to Lafayette Jeff sectional in 2018. Yes they did a little better once they got there. But you say they had more success because the L Jeff is more balanced, but the L Jeff sectional is rated higher in the Genius team state qualifiers grid in 2019: Jeff=4 and Crawfordsville =3 so fair to say a stronger sectional. In your theory, wouldn't that have had the opposite affect? What do you mean by balanced? Yes, Attica did improve results once they got into the L Jeff sectional, but that's because there team got better before they got to the sectional and were on an up peak cycle. Just my opinion, but Attica's success was more due the strong group of kids developed around the coaches son. It didn't have anything to do with the sectional they were in. They would have had similar and probably better results if they stayed at Crawfordsville. Not to be contrarian, but take North Posey which is the hottest small school going right now. Didn't they win the 1A team. Due to there geographical location, they have the misfortune of being in the same sectional as Evansville Mater Dei. To be statistically real, they have very little chance of ever winning that sectional. But what ever they're doing, and its not winning local sectionals, its really working as they're a bright spot. Just curious what was the breakout of percentages in the Logansport two sectionals over 10 years.
  13. I cant argue with your process of deduction, it logically makes sense. I know Ask@teamGarcia is busy watchin a lot of college wrestling and answering a lot questions. But one more serious question? So how about the really heavy guy in the white jump suit with the bad Pompador spotted at the Kona Shaved ice concession line state tournament last year. Was that Elvis and is he alive, or was that just a guy from the Region with a really bad mullet?
  14. Inquiring minds want to know? We got some real questions that need to be answered. Was Pistol Pete also an alias for DB Cooper? Ask@TeamGarcia Or am I getting two mysteries mixed up?
  15. I see the kids tournaments and dads really go overboard. Well scholarships to earn, got to have the 5 year olds ready. The post reminds me of the good old days on Indiamamat when the Logansport Regional was the red haired step child of the IndianaMat family and used to be the daily butt of jokes around SS week. You just don't see that full disrepectul disdain anymore like the regional used to get. There were posters who loved throwing colorful insults on how Logansport was the doorstep of Merrillville semistate, and then you had the somewhat delusional dads and fans defending the regional making unrealistic outrageous forecasts. Ill keep the names Unknown. You had Mudflap's deprecating and ridiculous "keep the bus running annual post. Even Y2 got into the fun. Mike took his shots. And nobody could color the regional with no less contempt than the Region Rat with his illustrative colorful banter. The good ole days. Ill stand by my post ( i made 5 or 6 years ago), One year, the Logansport regional, is going to East Chicago and dominate. Still waiting.
  16. Check this out. I just uploaded some data from 5 years worth of Genius ratings and SOS ratings into an excel spreadsheet. I added a column for the average and i ranked the teams. This gives a good picture of the consistency of the all the teams over a 5 year period. I hope Maligned doesn't mind me using his data, I just compiled it and used it to make averages. But I think kind of cool to look at how some teams have been really consistent and you can see some teams are trending up and some going down. Without much surprise, Brownsburg had the highest 5 year Genius average at 109.97, Mater Dei was a close second at 104.57, with Perry Meridian in 3rd at 101.61 and Warren Central at 97.42 narrowly edged out Cathedral 97.24 for 4th place. Brownsburg had the strongest strength of Schedule with Avon followed by Mater Dei. Shows the strength of the Hoosier Crossroads conference. Heres a snapshot of the top 20. 17. I would tell Tankersley to use this as Indianamat no respect bulletin board motivation. I would also remember and use as motivation Gage Garpow of Winamac. He didn't get much respect on the board and a lot of guys didn't think he would get out of SS. He went into State tournament took 4th and had Mason Paris on the ropes and lost 11-10.
  18. So kind of like the rotating regionals concept i posted last week, you're hypothetically suggesting having different regionals rotating to different semi states. I like the Idea. Maybe you could come with a concept that mitigates travel a little because somebody will complain about that. But for example maybe like have an every other year swap. Like Have Peru out of FW swap with Pendleton Heights. Or maybe Logansport swap with North Montgomery. Maybe get creative. Just so you're not always seeing the same teams.
  19. It's flagrant misconduct to be smoking at a wrestling event, so if they're on fire that's double extra illegal. State law.
  20. To Uncle Jimmy's Chagrin we got to hi-jack a little more on the Superbowl. I really wasn't saying the Raiders have been cheating lately, I was more referring to their motto coined by Al Davis "Just Win Baby" that was referenced earlier. Its all around their old Oakland stadium, and the motto obviously hasn't been working for the last 20 years, and i was remiss is saying the Oakland Raiders. Old habit. They need a new motto. But it was a great opportunity to reference my superbowl champion Chiefs. Maybe the people who thought the Cardinals or Rams were the best team in Missouri are the ones are the geniuses that thought the Kansas City Chiefs were in Kansas. Besides a couple years of the "Greatest Show on Earth" by the Rams, my Chiefs have always been the best team in Missouri. Come on. And I'm from the Kansas side of Kansas City, we know. Hell, I belonged to the KC wolf pack when i was 10. The Scholar digresses and is going to buy Superbowl Chiefs shirts for the family tonight. Now we can get back to wrestling.
  21. Hasn't been working for the Oakland Raiders lately either. My Chiefs on the other hand are doing a lot of things right
  22. Ok, So are you saying wrestling = harming somebody? I think most "scholars" including wrestling scholar agree you should never physically harm a man and a woman. Not that I agree with some of these Bishops making edicts, but I thought their rational was that it was inappropriate sexually for boys to be touching girls in multiple ways you do in wrestling.
  23. Hypothetical situation. So some Bishop gets a power trip and makes an edict that boys cant wrestle girls, would the same Bishop make a similar edict in football. Wouldn't the bishop consider it to be equally as bad for boys to play football with girls? So maybe in the next state football tournament in Pennsylvania, an underdog team playing a powerhouse Catholic team, should insert a girl into the starting line-up. Would the Catholic football team have to forfeit the football game? Maybe a good way to advance to the state title.
  24. Should be a good dual tonight with # 4 Nebraska heavy favorite. Another opportunity for Chad Red fans to see him wrestle in Indiana. Im assuming Purdue isn't charging any gate on this so a great night for free entertainment. If my wife will let me out of the house, I think the Scholar might be in attendance tonight. Again Senior night. Season has gone by fast.
