  1. Of course, the Hoosiers classic. That was a long time ago and everybody loves the small school underdog in Indiana. If Milan can win, then any small could win. I think Milan has been a curse to small schools, and just took Indiana longer to class their sports as a result. But lets be real, everybody loves to bring up the outliers, the small schools that overcame the obstacles. For example, your Culver Community probabably is one of the better examples of small school kids doing well. Wasnt Hurford the last 1A school to win state. But when taken as a whole, the small schools dont fair that well. I think the depth of the small schools is also lacking, and I think thats the lack of success these schools have. I bet if you took the small school class schools in Ohio and put them up against Indiana, Ohio would dominate. I think you get less participation and effort because the bar is set so high to achieve something for the small schools.
  2. I can see the space thing. But safety Hazard? Dangersous coolers.
  3. Probably Merrillville prices are comparable to most local concession stands, and of course lower than Bankers Life. It was an easy jab, but I do think the cooler rule at Merrillville is to force patronization of the concession stands.
  4. They could score the first round of the state tournament and add those points. I never did understand why we do this in Indiana.
  5. In the 4s vs 1s I could Kleimola over Paris happen.
  6. Good point on overpriced food at the state tournament. But I enjoyed the $9.25 bar-b-que nachos i got last year at the state tournament and plan on overpaying again.
  7. My son also places tennis, so I follow the state tennis tournament. The tennis process is very complicated. Keep in mind just like wrestling, there is one class so its very difficult to qualify for state. Note only the #1 tennis player from each teamr and #1 doubles player are only entered into the tounament. But just like wrestlng, theres a sectionals and regionals but no individual semi-state and qualifying is actually based on 1st how you do in the team tournament. So only 8 singles players and 8 doubles teams qualify for state. And the pairings or seedings are based on criteria, with the 1st seed being the undefeated player from the team champion if that happens, with the next criteria being the undefeated player from a losing team in state tournament. But to make a long story short, the individual tournanent is actually seeded based on the individual performance within the team state tournanment.
  8. I know what happened. Its capitalism by forcing all the spectators to utitlize the Merriillville over priced concession stand.
  9. Also the West Lafayette 220 pounder also lost a last second match in the ticket round.
  10. Lets not change the format of the individual tournament. But for state scoring lets have 3 state champions based on points scored by class size. 1A champ would be the highest scoring 1A school, 2A champ would be highest scoring 2A school and the 3A champ would be the highest scoring 3A school. It would give the small guys a little incentive. Like last year Cascade, even though scored 2 points would be the 1A champ. Yorktown would of been 2A champ of course Cathedral would have been 3A. Maybe could also start scoring the irrelevant 1st round at state to give some small schools a chance to score.
  11. Thats looks like a great facility. But at Merrillville you're closer to the action, and er the a lot closer to the dude setting next to you on the bleachers.
  12. Here's a question to all one-class fanatics. How about the individual awards in football and basketball and baseball. Why should they have have a 1A all-state and a 5A- All state quarterback. Or why do we have 5 Class All-State basketball teams? Yes they helped their teams, but their efforts are being judged individually. The 1A Shortstop can work as hard as the 4A Shortstop and be as good or even better. Dont we want to know who the best Center in the state is? Doesnt that devalue the whole All-State awards?
  13. Galagore, I think you missed Y2's and my sarcasm. Actually, I really am a 2x state placer in a classed state bordering Nebraska. And I never used the term "classed state placer" nor put an asterisk by it. My son also wrestled in two different classed states but never placed.
  14. These other state champions should at least have the courtesy to put an asterisk by the "State Championship Title". Or maybe the Nebraska kids should say im the " Nebraska classed State Champion". Also another good point is 14 weight classes too many.
  15. Yes, some small schools have success but not much at the state tournament. The highest placing 1A school at the state tournament was Cascade last year that tied for 40th with 2 points. Less than 5 % of state qualifiers were from 1A schools. You have a few bright spots like Pleasant Heights or Oak Ridge. And you might get a kid from a small school to place once in a while. But for these strong 1A schools, theres a handful of schools comtemplating to shut their program down. Did we lose four programs last year. Is that a trend or an anomaly? I have some friends in the wrestling community in "Classed States" amd they think having one class is ridiculous, but what people grow up on is what they like.
  16. Theres pros and cons to one class vs multiple classes. I know some people say its not broke, but thats only a point of perception. Some Pros would be: 1. One state champion, you know who is best. 2. Quality level of wrestling at state tournament. My biggest complaint about class wrestling is the watered down level. 3. Focus of fans on the tournament vs focus of multiple tournaments. 4. Easier to hold at one site and is at one site. 5. Competition pushes the best wrestlers to improve. 6. Tradition, thats the way its always been in Indiana so you have to continue the tradition. Of couse this could be seen as a con. Cons are 1. Takes a month to complete the state tournament. 2. Due to time restraints, wrestlebacks are not done, and as a result the best wrestler doesnt move on. 3. Small schools at an extremely unfair advantage when competing against big schools. This really drives down participation. 4. The narrowness of success discourages some kids from continuing to strive and continue. 5. You get less participation in the state tournament from most of the communities. 6. Since its a tradition in Indiana, then thats the way it has to be so everybody thinks its the best way because its always done that way. Keep in mind Indiana is in the minority of states that have one class.
  17. Good point. If you look at each individuals state tournanment history in big matches, Schurg has faired better. There something to be said thats it not easy to wrestle under pressure. Some kids do it better than others. Should make some for some good drama on Saturday.
  18. I dont see Schurg getting past Sopko to even have a shot at Hughes.
  19. I dont know if I would call the 8th semi-state ranked kid vs the the #1 ranked a death draw. Looks like the bracket lined up very close to plan of rankings. Would you define death draw as like two highly ranked state kids meeting in SS ticket round.
  20. Congratulations to Power Coach Van Der Aa and his asst power coaches. Nobody works harder. This one was well deserved.
  21. I think coach Ersland is doing a great job. But you cant say he's taken the program to a new level. He's broken the top 25 with a #24 ranking. Im going off memory, but Purdue was consistently in the top 25 under Coach HInkle. Does anybody have the stats where Purdue ended up in the rankings the last 8-9 years. You'll see Purdue was in the top 25 more than less.
  22. Thats a pretty large affect due to rounding. Thats almost one whole wrestler. The Quota system is simpler to understand, I suppose we have to compromise with the rounding affect, as the prior percentage system would not have rewarded the Mooresville sectional as much. I see you really cant get around this, as you cant give a sectional 5.5 qualifiers.
  23. I did some math and calculated the projected placing by semi-state based on the latest rankings. I took the top 8 ranked guys from each SS and added them up. Only once was there a SS with 5 ranked guys in the the top 8 and that was 182 at New Castle, so I only gave them credit for four since they can only place four. Of course you have to take ranking with a grain of salt as we know things will be somewhat different. Curious to see how actual compares to rankings. Projected top 8 placers Fort Wayne =22 Evansville = 25 Merrillville= 26 New Castle=39
  24. That makes sense. But always hate the Indiana travel rule.
