  1. Please understand I am not bashing here. This is a great kid. Wilson is great wrestler who found out what happend when you do not have a very strong schedule over the course of an entire year. Lots of years his schools' kids come in to the Peru Sectional with astonishing records, only to struggle to get out of regional and certainly semi-state. Great kid though! Hopefully there will be an interest by some schools for him. He is also a highly talented soccer player.
  2. Got a chance to see a kid from Heights last night at the MIC (at Peru) wrestle whom I have never seen wrestle before. I have not been to conference the last few years and they could not make it up to our place earlier for a Super 8. I believe his name was Adrian Porter the Heavyweight. What an athlete. Huge balanced hips and thighs....a man among children in the heavyweight division of the MIC. Cass has a pretty good heavyweight, and I have seen him dominate some pretty good kids, but Porter made it look easy. Just my 2 cents.
  3. well I read this site all the time, just have not posted in eons This is a great kid and a great family. He also has run cross country and track his whole HS career. Peru wrestling is a family...much like many programs across the state. (you all can attest to programs you know that are like this) Coach Hobbs does not let anybody flounder in the program. They may not be the best wrestler, but if they show up and work hard there is always a place...starting with the five year olds that come in on elementary clinic nights. Always a pat on the back, hand shake for the parents and a welcome one and all attitude. Jacob has truly made it, and those people that know him have always rooted for his strong desire to be part of the family, and his desire to go to college. Jacob deserves this story!!! If there are any other stories out there like this...please share with the board. Great things happen in wrestling and because of wrestling.
  4. Unnecessary spreading of germs!!! Follow the Iowa rules
  5. Wow, I did not realize the list was so extensive. I was fodder for a year and 1/2 at Mish in the early 80's. Used wrestling to get in shape for baseball. Never did Coach Smith or Coach Beehler coach me differently because I had no real idea of what I was doing. I needed that discipline they gave me. Hated the timed sprints around the top of the gym though. They did on occasion crack a smile when Rob Roggeman would side head lock me, and before I could breath I was looking up at the lights. Adding to the list: I remember talking to Mike Williams (State Champ I believe... 98 lb) and he told me that he and Brian Guernsey had been helping coach Kerrn at Jimtown. That was a few years ago.
  6. Of Course who did Mark Kerrn wrestle for??? Al Smith Mishawaka Maybe this discussion should be broken into pre 1995 and post 1995 coaches. Way too many coaches from my era that could be mentioned...Along with Al Smith how about Henry Wilk?
  7. I won't predict much...but there were be some earth shaking matches in the 195 pound and up weight classes. Some very good heavy weight classes this week in Peru with the Kokomo bunch, HN (Mason), Mac (Ulerick) and a few others. Ross and Hoover had an outstanding championship match at Peru last week at 195. Loe and Kern for Peru I like...but I am from Peru They both are wrestling very well right now. Cress for Peru wrestled well last week and snatched a championship with about 2 seconds to go over Southwood. Jolas HN Goodnight KOK won't get touched Some good wrestling starting at 8:30 AM
  8. Just a reminder....Peru starts at 8:30 AM tomorrow Several great matches especially in the heavy end of the scales tomorrow.
  9. Yep more errors.....Peru really won, Huntington North's bus did not make it, Northfield got lost on the way, North Miami brought the wrong uniforms.... Yeeeesh. What's important here is that each kid knows where they stand and Huntington North knows they wrestle Wednesday at Logansport. The scorer does a phenominal job, and I believe this is the first mistake he has made in ALL of the years he has done this. Not sure why there would have been a mistake or two, but it did not change a thing. In actuality, in the individual tournament, the only thing that is important is the top 4 spots and who moves on as a placer and a team. Peru runs a tournament as well as anybody in the state....ask any official who works here, and I would say every school that comes here will say the same. Two simple errors. Both of them have been accounted for. Yep it's official and thank you for your concerns.
  10. Huntington North Wins 1 232.00 Huntington North 2 209.50 Peru 3 167.00 Northfield 4 166.50 North Miami 5 156.00 Maconaquah 6 143.00 Manchester 7 135.00 Southwood 8 4.00 Wabash 106 Mock NM 113 Wilson Mac 120 Kern Peru 126 Chamberlin NF 132 Loe Peru 138 Jolas HN 145 McKee NM 152 Wells NF 160 Robinson HN 170 Cress Peru 182 Clarke HN 195 Ross NF 220 Snep Manch 285 Mason HN
  11. Peru showcases all dual meets at home under a spot light in the Tiger Den (aux gym). The Sectionals and Regionals are moved to the Tig-Arena (bigger, newer gym) and the finals are all under one spot light in the middle. The custodian always makes sure not to turn on the overhead gym lights until the heavyweights are done for a few minutes, and they have received their medals and wall chart. He is a former wrestling dad and gets it. Nothing worse than the heavy's finishing the final match of the day and everybody is making noise packing up and heading out before they are done, stomping down the bleacher stairs loudly while the two kids are fighting it out for medal. Makes me want to stand up and yell "sit the hell down until they are done!"
  12. Mark Kerrn is an outstanding coach too
  13. The Peru Individual Sectional and Regionals will begin at 8:30 AM this Saturday and next. Weigh-in will begin at 7:30. Peru has a Boys Basketball game on the 4th after the regional and this allows ample time to tear down and set up. Peru AD wanted the start times to be the same both weeks to avoid any confusion, and so that nobody would mistakingly miss a match in the early rounds by thinking it started at 9 both weeks. (did not want to start the sectional at 9 and then the regional at 8:30 with some of the same people coming back to watch, and missing some first round matches) Good Luck to everybody.
  14. Peru sectional and regional has the wall chart to give away. As far as an IHSAA violation??? Our AD is a stickler on the IHSAA stuff and if they said no we would not have them. We have them, so I would assume it is the individual school that does not want to shell out a few measly dollars to have somebody print them. Just talked to our "wall chart lady" today and she said "I'll see you Saturday.' Have a great and HEALTHY run this Saturday to all wrestlers and families sitting on the edge of their seats.
  15. As far as transfering goes, they better move. Don't think for a minute that the IHSAA won't figure that out pretty quickly. Problem for Mish with that is that there are soooo many quality programs in the area. It used to be that you would worry about Penn getting the Mish kids. But with Riley, Clay, Jimtown, Elk. Memorial, there are many schools these kids could end up at and fit in right away.
  16. Tom Evanich, Logan trainer, is as good as they get. Been at it for a million years and really gets it in terms of how to work with athletes. He, like all trainers, cares more about the kid than anything else, and you cannot ask for a better "bed-side" manner when dealing with kids and parents.
  17. Peru wins it with no seniors in the line-up. They did not wrestle well against Western in a dual and then against Huntington North also in a dual. But in typical Coach Hobbs and staff fashion, they tune it up for the conference. Great balance in the MIC this year with Cass moving into a third place spot ahead of Mac. Good luck to all at sectionals next week. Huntington North is probably the favorite at Peru after the way they wrestled in the dual against Peru. But you all know how that works. Stay healthy in the run to Conseco!!
  18. This kid here...never heard of him until sectional last year. He was walking around the mats before it started with his glasses on and head phones. I thought...well that is kind of a geeky looking kid with the glasses and all. THEN, THEN he goes out and destroys everybody in sight, puts his glasses back on and goes back to being CLARK KENT. That's who he is... Clark Kent.... and then turns into some kind of beast superman on the mat. Love watching him wrestle!! Kokomo has some pretty good kids especially in the uppers. Huntington North has some other studs too (eckert and the heavyweight) Have not seen anybody else.
  19. Match resceduled for tonight at Peru's Tiger Den. This was snowed out last week. 6:30 start time for jv....Varsity about 6:50 or so.
  20. Yes as stated by J and B, Kokomo had some guys out of the line-up when they faced Peru. Peru person here, I love our squad this year, but we have no seniors and are full of sophs and a few juniors making up the line up and still can challenge a lot of people. The next two years should be special if the kids keep working hard. Huntington North is in the Peru sectional too and although I have not heard much about them this year, they won it last year and were returning some good kids. Maconaquah has some talent also and should have some champs points in some classes. Peru absolutely dominated the Super 8 this weekend against everybody but Kokomo, and as said earlier, Kokomo did not have a full strength team.
  21. Peru wins its own Super 8 and goes 5-0 on the day. Kokomo finishes 2nd at 4-1 Loe, Kern, Quin, and Simpson go undefeated for the Tigers.
  22. Mac comes in with a much better team record than Peru, but Peru goes into Mac and wins 10 matches tonight. A lot can be said about the types of teams and kids Peru wrestles throughout the year. The times these young men are getting beat by kids at the Al Smith tourney or a Plymouth invite and some of the other teams they wrestle pays off on a night like this when they go in and beat a good rival. Good win for the Tigers. Big Peru Super 8 this Saturday. 4 MIC teams in same pool looking for conference seeding.
  23. After reading your two posts, I should have rephrased a little. The media reports facts. But the media also allows people to get on the "comments" boards and air any dirty laundry they might have to help propel the situation into utter nastiness. My problem is not so much with the media in this case. My problem lies with the media outlets allowing slanderous and distasteful comments from the secrecy of a keyboard without vetting any of it. In no way am I suggesting the victims are "not being truthful." The media does, however, LOVE this type of story. Listen to Don Henley's song "Dirty Laundry."
  24. The media tends to decide the outcome of these types of things way in advance of the actual investigations. Let the internal and external (as Mish Supt stated) investigations occur before people pass judgement on anybody involved in this situation. Everyone involved, I am sure, is a mess right now including the alleged victim, the person who reported it, and the individuals named in the accusation. The news sites love their comments boards for the sheer joy of letting folks rip other people to shreds behind a computer screen, making statements and accusations, calling for peoples' heads when the arrests or investigations are made public. The Al Smith Invitational is dedicated to man who lives and breaths what this sport is all about. The tournament, created by him way back when, is the epitome of high school wrestling tournaments par none throughout the state and absolutely the region. I have no words to express my shock at this level of alleged activity and the subsequent knowledge of it by others in the school (again, allegedly....I am not pointing a finger....allegedly is the safest word here) However, if it comes to be fact, then the punishments should be meated out accordingly. Canceling this tournament is punishing the other schools and their coaches, not just the alleged. Keep the tournament for this year, then re-evaluate after the facts are out. I cannot express the shock and anger I would have if this were my son and rightfully justified. Again, the news companies live the comments boards for the gossip and mongering it allows. I pray for this young man and his family.
