  1. Can you bet cool points if you're in the hole? Like I am. (Gotta stop bringin' up class wrestling...)
  2. Merlyn, Actually, it looks like MD has new singlets. I'm not sure why they bothered because the design is basically the same. They added a pinstripe down the side. I wonder if they'll ever lose the 70s era red leggings.
  3. 171 at Castle - Dalton Brandenstein (11), Ev. Mater Dei losing to unranked Aaron Haire (12), Boonville 13-2 decision first round Castle Regional. Was that score a misprint for 3-2? Was Brandenstein sick, injured or just not ready to wrestle? MD sending remaining 13 to Semi-State. Haire is 36-7 going into Semi-State but I don't know anything else about him. Whatever the answer, Castle is a meatgrinder!
  4. Is that policy of prohibiting practicing with other teams in season still in effect? I think the rule must have been made to prevent city schools benefiting from being close by while small town schools are disadvantaged by distance and travel time.
  5. Yup, Illinois looks like this right now: IHSA III: 77 currently viewing IHSA II: 28 currently viewing IHSA I: 26 currently viewing Class II has a ton more total views and threads because III is new. I notice that KarlHungus doesn't deny that IndianaMat could ever be "balkanized" the same way.
  6. I notice that the Missouri high school wrestling board is divided into four classes. As of five minutes ago it looked liked this: Class 1: 23 viewers Class 2: 15 viewers Class 3: 17 viewers Class 4: 20 viewers Could this be the future at IndianaMat?
  7. I did a real quick Internet search and I can't find a reference to a two mile adjustment "late in the 19th century." It appears that when Indiana became a state in 1816, its citizens asked Congress to move the northern border up ten miles from the original east west line established by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Then Michigan Gov. Cass objected but Congress granted Indiana's request. Indiana sought this adjustment to gain more access to Lake Michigan. Two years later, Illinois asked for and got a 60 mile adjustment north and wound up with Chicago instead of Wisconsin. Michigan later lost a territorial battle with Ohio over Toledo. Wow, ten miles. Just think how many current Northern Indiana teams could be enjoying class wrestling in Michigan right about now!
  8. David Taylor, Penn State freshman ranked #2 in NCAA Div 1. He teched Indiana's Paul Young 19-2 (4:06) in the finals of the Southern Scuffle in North Carolina at the end of December, and beat Young again 14-3 in a recent dual at Bloomington (2:44 riding time). Amazing kid - now 25-0. Only two losses in high school (St. Paris Graham, OH) and the only 4x winner of the Walsh Ironman. What he does best is ride on top and turn - reminds me of Gene Mills, who pioneered the idea that it was possible and not bad technique to run a half while the opponent was still on his knees (with weight forward on top). Mills was a world class wrestler in the late 70s and early 80s, robbed by a boycott (1980) and injury (1984) of Olympic Gold. (Edited to correct error and add details.)
  9. It was Bobby Ausbrooks in 2002 (I think) who couldn't crack the varsity lineup as a senior around 135-140, after having been a state qualifier in 2000 at 103 (losing 7-2 Fri. night to eventual champ Nick Iannarelli, Elkhart Memorial). He was a better wrestler as a senior 140 than as a soph 103.
  10. Steven Bradley, Beech Grove. 3x State Champion at 119, 125, 125 (1996-98). 4x state placewinner (4th at 106 as a freshman). Recruited by Oklahoma State. I read that he had weight issues and didn't thrive under Coach John Smith. I read that Bradley then moved on to somewhere in Illinois but I heard nothing after that. He was invited to the 1998 Dapper Dan and failed to make weight there. Beat Leroy Vega 10-2 in a freestyle match (Leroy bumping up for the challenge). Great wrestler. Can anyone say what happened with him since OK State?
  11. I have to say as a single class supporter that I do like the unofficial class rankings here. Now we can have a single class state meet and single class team state to determine our true champions, plus hypothetical arguments about multi-class rankings. Much better than the other way around!
  12. Posting lineups=retarded? Here we go again...
  13. wrestlingguy: "Welch vs. Sims (Part 20ish)". It looks like Sims bumped up two weights to try his luck against the other Welch twin. A new saga begins?
  14. 145 - Robert Rosbottom (Jeff) - Dan Jankowski (EMD), 1999 Seymour Semi-State (ticket round) 12 oz. curls: Your memory of the atmosphere of the match is right on but your recall of the details is a little foggy. No overtime. Rosbottom 3-2 decision in regulation. I remember Rosbottom having to artificially (for him) maintain an exaggerated low level stance the whole match to block out Jankowski's "how low can you go" shots. Should have been called for stalling twice in the third period to go to OT. Anyone else remember it this way?
  15. The way I understand the rule is that if anyparticipating team is located more than 300 miles from any Indiana state line then no Indiana team can participate. There are teams (full and partial) from all over the country. There are about 32 full teams and another couple dozen partial teams. I went and watched this thing in 1999. Amazing event. It appears that the IHSAA isn't into the whole all-star thing unless its basketball.
  16. Relax, I was just having fun with it. Considering the grief Coach has gotten over the issue it jumped out at me when he posted nameless results. I figured I wouldn't be the only one to notice the lack of learning curve so I pounced first. ;D I am an MV alum and I wish the team and Coach Hunter all the best. 8)
  17. Coach doesn't have the names of his own wrestlers? Convenient - and consistent!
  18. Very funny for the day. Right on, Y2.
  19. Well, I've been away from the board for several weeks! I come back to find out I'm leading some poll. I didn't realize I was so notorious. I almost felt good about it until I realized the poll was stacked with a single-class supporter (that would be me) against two high profile multi-class adherents. Thus, the class support got diluted and I'm winning some watered down whatever... (There's a lesson in here somewhere.) Here's an idea for a new poll. Let's remember the all-stars from the old board in years gone by - robnewerk, Mr. HappyPantz, and too many others to recall at the moment.
  20. It's easy to see that revenue would be down because team semi-state was eliminated. However, I wonder how much more revenue has been down because MD hasn't made the trip to Center Grove the last two years? In other words, did Castle's fan base pick up all the slack?
  21. I'll post this name again for those who missed it on page 1: Alan Grammer, Evansville Reitz. 2x Runnerup. 2nd @ 105 (1978), 2nd @ 119 (1979). 3 losses in high school. JV as sophomore behind Bobby Stone (3rd at 105 in 1977). Grammer was Div. II National Champ for SIU Edwardsville. 2x All-American Div. I NCAA - 3rd @ 134 (1985), 5th @ 126 (1986). Lost to John Smith at 1984 Olympic Trials. Smith had 5 losses in college - 2 to Grammer. Is anyone on the board old enough to remember Grammer? He was a stout hardnosed redheaded kid who'd run over you like a freight train. He was even better at freestyle and greco, big thrower.
  22. I understand that a fall is a 2-second count of both scapula touching the mat - not that this ref would see it from the opposite side of the action. Let's face it: this ref was mailing it in. It's clear to me that Phillips was resisting without moving because he wasn't stuck.
  23. That didn't answer the question. A kid losing a match once in awhile is not the issue. The issue here is bad officiating. Phillips wasn't stuck and the official was too lazy to get in position to call a fall. Integrity of the sport is important.
  24. Did anyone happen to notice that the ref was out of position to call the fall against Phillips? How lazy is that? When Cody swung his legs the other direction the ref was required to adjust position and check the other shoulder. Pathetic.
  25. Indiana usually wins the small school A Division matches. That's because Illinois is limited (obviously) to the smaller schools while Indiana puts up their next highest placer (a single-class state runnerup sometimes) from a single-class state meet. What Illinois has done here is screw their big school next highest placer (big class) in favor of the small school class champ. To recap, Illinois big school division beats Indiana single class champs fair and square but higher quality Indiana placers win against Illinois smaller school division against kids who may or may not deserve to be there, while other Illinois kids get left home. Law of unintended consequences. Just say no to class wrestling!
