MattM
Women's Senior U.S. Open: Miricle & Hilebrandt (currently ranked 2nd in the U.S.) both in 55kg Age groups slightly lower Women's senior division allowing Kayla to be in the senior division. Strub entered at 67kg Preview via themat.com http://www.themat.com/section.php?section_id=3&page=showarticle&ArticleID=26344 55 kg/121 lbs. Helen Maroulis has been one of the top women wrestlers for a number of years. She won a World silver medal at this weight in Canada, after falling just short of making the Olympic Team last April. Maroulis has also been fifth in the World Championships and has vast international experience. She recently won her third WCWA college national title as well. A fast rising college star is Sarah Hildebrandt of King College, who won a gold medal at the Senior Pan American Championships and also took the University Nationals title. Another title contender is past University World champion Katherine Fulp-Allen, who was third at the Olympic Trials and has considerable international experience. A reigning WCWA college national champion who is capable of success is Katerina Perez of King College. Veteran star Michaela Hutchison, who finished a great college career last year and has been strong in freestyle nationally, will be a threat if she wrestles at U.S. Open. Another experienced star is past Junior World bronze medalist Amy Whitbeck. The college ranks continue to develop new talents, including Brieana Delgado, Samantha Klingel, Jaccara Winchester and Kayla Brendlinger. 67 kg/147.5 lbs. The U.S. has the reigning World champion at this weight, Adeline Gray, who is expected to give 72 kg a try this season. Coming into the U.S. Open, Veronica Carlson could be the favorite. Carlson moved up from 63 kg this year and has been red hot. She won the University Nationals, and took medals at the Dave Schultz and in Ukraine. Her top challenger could be college star Julia Salata, a member of the 2012 Junior and University World Teams. Salata made the Senior Pan Am team and is showing consistency when she wrestles at 67 kg instead of 72 kg. One of the talents in college is Wayland Baptist’s Tamyra Menshah, who has placed high at the WCWA college nationals and the University Nationals. Brittany David, who lost to Salata in the Junior World Team Trials last year in a competitive series, is another rising star. The rest of the field here includes improving college athletes such as Kayla Aggio, Amy Spafford, Rachel Shannon, Amanda Prough, Crystal Borrow and Brittany Gadd. This is a weight where some new names could emerge on the national level in Las Vegas.
