Over the past two years Indiana has only produced two Cadet Greco-Roman All-Americans, but the wrestlers and coaches are looking to improve on that this year.  This year's team is not deep on numbers, but will have some solid representitives.  Leading the way is returning national champion Mitch Sliga, who will look to defend his title in the same weight class this year.  Last year he won the Triple Crown, but was derailed from that feat earlier this spring.  He will now be going for the daring double championship at Fargo.  Another wrestler to watch is Wesley Bernard.  After a stellar season as a freshman at 215lbs, he has moved up to heavyweight and has had a great spring.  Another name to watch is Jake Masengale who was a state qualifier as a sophomore this year at 171lbs.  He has had a great spring including a Quadruple Crown in Indiana winning all three styles in the Cadet age division along with winning Junior state in freestyle.

This year's Cadet Freestyle team features five state qualifiers and a few other top wrestlers that will be looking to come home with some Fargo hardware.  Leading the way once again is Mitch Sliga who captured a freestyle "stopsign" last year.  Steven Micic is also one of the top wrestlers on the team.  He placed 5th in a loaded FILA Cadet(age 15-17 year old) tournament and won the Central Regionals this spring.  On top of that he went undefeated at the Cadet duals.  Another wrestler that had an unblemished record at the Cadet duals was Wesley Bernard.  He will be looking to continue his hot streak after a great freshman campaign for the Cathedral Irish this past winter.  Brandon James and Jake Masengale both finished the Cadet duals with 6-1 records will also be All-American threats.  James is an incoming freshman that has racked up numerous age level championships.  Masengale has had a great spring and summer and wants to cap it off with a place on the Fargo podium.  Two Indianapolis products, Vinny Corsaro and Levi Moss look to prove themselves after placing at state this past season.

2010 Woodlan(Fort Wayne) Semi-State Preview
Bobby Cox and company made things quite interesting this week with the decision to let the Randolph County wrestlers back into the tournament at the semi-state level. These additions will add 14 rat-tail matches to start the day.  I hope to see the fans cheer these wrestlers on as they get a second chance this week.  The Fort Wayne Semi-State is going to be very exciting with numerous great ticket-round matches.  Look for the action to be hot and heavy from the beginning until the end.  Thirteen wrestlers head to Fort Wayne with unblemished records on the season.  They include three wrestlers from Team State Finalists Yorktown, Derek Bevans, Devon Jackson and Ross Janney.  Other undefeated wrestlers include Tony Lovejoy of Bishop Luers, Brock Norton of Carroll, Austin Waite of Maconaquah, Josh Martin of Randolph Southern, Josh Ehr of South Adams, Zac McCray of Garrett, Travis Thatcher of Bellmont, Jackson Bratcher of Eastbrook, Dylan Green of Kokomo and Korey Eck of Concordia.

Both were state qualifiers last year, with Gonzales being the semi-state champion at this weight class. Logan Randle of Huntington North will also be a wrestler to watch after dealing New Castle's Brendan Campbell his first high school loss.

Just like 135lbs, this weight will be very exciting to play out. Every match here is very important and no one in this weight class can be overlooked. From top to bottom, you have a possible ACAC title rematch between undefeated Josh Ehr and Bryce Schendel of Garrett. Next up is a possible match between returning state placer Dalton Sparks of Peru and Jordan Venderley of Bishop Dwenger. Moving to the bottom bracket you have Reece Lefever of Carroll and Cody Harper of Yorktown in an interesting match-up. The last quarter bracket will be interesting too, as the first round pits two NHC rivals against eachother. Levy Francois defeated Tanner Boman just a few weeks ago, but Boman is coming off sectional and regional titles. Neither of those two can overlook Huntington North's Brant Hiple either. You might need some oxygen to catch your breath after this weight class!

2010 Team State Finals Bracket
On Thursday the IHSAA announced the team state draw to the public.  Many great matches could occur early on including a possible #1 vs. #2 in the first round between Mishawaka and Crown Point.  Mishawaka won the first match-up 42-12 at the Traicoff Inviational.  Other great potential first round match-ups include a rematch of Perry Meridian and Cathedral that went down to the last match just last week.  Conference rivals New Palestine and Yorktown could also hook up in a pivotal first round match.  The three headed monster out of the south Mater Dei, Castle and Reitz will all slug it out for a team state berth and go up against the Peru Team Regional champion which right now McCutcheon is the favorite.  Most of the team regional pairings stayed the same, but a few changed.  Peru, Seymour and Jasper Team Regionals all will have different match-ups in the first round than they had last year.

2010 Plymouth Sectional Preview
Based on the seeds, this sectional appear to be wide open and up to 5 teams could contend for the sectional championship. Three teams from the Northern Lakes Conference (Warsaw, Wawasee, Plymouth) and two teams from Lake Maxinkuckee (CMA and Culver Community all seem to have a shot at the team hardware. What team will come out strong is anybodies guess.
 
This sectional feeds into the Rochester Regional where they are paired with the top four placers from the Mishawaka Sectional. The team champion from this sectional will move on to Jimtown High School next Wednesday where they will meet the champion from the Mishawaka Sectional.

Warsaw’s Jared Brooks answered a lot of questions when he mowed down the field at Mishawaka’s Al Smith Invite in late December. He appears to be ready for the big stage in Indianapolis this year.

To reach the top of podium, Hurford must first defeat the cagey Ross Hoover of Warsaw.

Three outstanding underclass heavies will be on stage at Plymouth. Number one seed Damon Howe of Plymouth is the defending sectional champ. Hot on his heels will be Culver Community’s explosive Jeremiah Harvey and Bremen Super Soph Abe Hall. Hall’s father was a state champ for the Lions back in the 1970s and his son appears to have similar talent.

2010 New Castle Semi-State Preview
In 2009 wrestlers from the New Castle semi-state brought home three state championships. Senior Camden Eppert led the way with his second title, while Cody Phillips and Michael Duckworth from Union County both brought home their first titles. Eppert has since moved on to Purdue, while Phillips and Duckworth both will look for another title this season. Another former state champion that will look to finish his career with another title is Brandon Wright of Warren Central. The Kieffer twins, Josh and Justin of Roncalli will both look to improve on their placements from last year. Josh finished second, while Justin was 7th at 112lbs and 119lbs respectively. Also coming back and looking to make an impact is three-time state place winner Brandon Nelson of Lawrence North. Nelson has finished in the top four all three years, but never made it to the finals. Josh Jullian of Lebanon rounds out the quartet of returning placers at 112lbs. Mason Berryman and Sammy Bennett from Anderson Highland will both look to improve on their performances from last year. Berryman finished 4th last year, while Bennett finished 3rd after a 2nd place finish as a sophomore. Jacob Tonte, powerhouse Perry Meridian’s only returning placer, finished 8th last year at 140lbs. Warren Central’s Michael Johnson Jones is the last returning state placer in the New Castle semi-state. He finished 7th last year at 189lbs. Last, but not least there needs to be a mention of Brenden Campbell of New Castle. He was undefeated last year, until he was sidelined the week of regional with appendicitis. He will be back this year and look to continue his winning streak all the way to Conseco Fieldhouse.
 
As far as the team race goes this year, it will be a dogfight. Last year’s runner-up Perry Meridian returns a great group of wrestlers and coaches that are itching for the blue ring. Other top teams include two Catholic rivals, Roncalli and Cathedral. Lawrence North is a team that definitely cannot be overlooked as they return many good wrestlers.

Warsaw’s Jarred Brooks and his golden tan are ready for the big time after a heartbreaking loss to Merrillville’s Zack Stevens in last year’s ticket round. Stevens is the likely runner-up. The story that may overshadow them all is Penn’s Sarah Hildebrandt. She has a realistic shot at Conseco and will likely be a national story item if she were to qualify for state.

I see him surviving the double edged sword of Anthony Hawkins and Danny Bradley to come away with the title. Lake Central looks to get join Merrillville and Penn and get their second state qualifier in senior Marc Escobedo.

Zack Thornton of Chesterton drew that short straw and must face Napules in the ticket round. Freshman Mitch Hartman has gotten increasingly more confident as the season progressed and will likely face unbeaten and largely unknown Jordan Hicks of Seeger in their ticket round. The top wrestlers in the bottom half of the bracket appear to have slightly easier routes to Indy. Look for Mishawaka’s Taylor Wisler and Hanover Central’s John Petrov to put on quite a show in their semifinal matchup.

My pick to win is one of my favorite wrestlers to watch over the past two year, Matt Guerra of Mishawaka. He will face a stiff challenge in his ticket round match up with senior Dallas Schurg of Crown Point. Guerra will then like face Lafayette Jeff’s regional champ Trey Grayson. In the top half of the bracket, Juniors Bobby Marcuccilli of Wawasee will likely face Portage junior Luis Acuna in an exciting ticket round battle. Lake Central’s Bradley Wartman looks to be in fine position to get his first ticket to Indy.

The state champion came from this semi-state last year in Culver Military’s Daniel Young. It just might happen again this year as Crown Point’s dominating Eric Roach is the heavy favorite. Roach might be tested in the semi-finals by Munster’s Alex Surma. Surma can control a match with his mat wrestling. The top half of the bracket looks to be set up for underrated Laquan Lunford of South Bend Clay. He must survive the assault of the Lake Station Launcher, Jack Hammons. Hammons will come out with guns a blazing and can put even the best wrestlers on their backs. Beware of the Reaper!

Kankakee Valley’s Dustin Schultz and Gary West Side’s Nicholas Hill appear to have the inside track.

Howe has battled Thomas closely a couple of times this year to prove he is among the state’s elite big men. I see a third qualifier coming from the Rochester regional in South Bend Clay’s gritty Evan Nixon.

2010 Merrillville Semi-State Preview
Well we are saving arguably the best semi-state for last. The Merrillville semi-state is once again loaded and returns 20 previous state placers including four state champions. The returning state champions include Frankie Porras of Hobart, Anthony Hawkins and Jason Tsirtsis of Crown Point and two-time state champion Sean McMurray of Portage. On top of that, there are four returning wrestlers that have finished as high as second place in Eric Roach of Crown Point, Ryan Stahl and Christian Lentz of Mishawaka, and Anthony Quiroz of Chesterton. This year looks to be just as good as the past years for this semi-state. Four state placers return at 103lbs with Kyler Ayersman of Lake Central the highest returner. He finished 3rd last year beating Merrillville’s Zach Stevens. Also 7th and 8th place finishers Cameron Halstead of Crown Point and Aurileo Medina of Munster return. Paul Beck is yet another returning placer coming back for Mishawaka, he finished 7th in 2008. Also returning from 112lbs last year is Alex Gregory of Penn, who finished 4th. Another Merrillville Pirate state placer coming back is Anthony Napules who place 4th in 2008. Alex Surma of Munster returns after placing 6th at 140lbs last year. Purdue recruit Braden Atwood of Delphi is looking for an elusive state title after placing 5th last year. Getting to the big guys, Nathan Cleveland comes back at 215lbs for Lowell after finishing 3rd last year. One last Merrillville wrestler rounds out the list of returning placers in James Travis. He finished 5th last year as an undersized heavyweight, but will come back this year a little bigger and meaner.
 
Along with great individuals come great teams out of this semi-state. Defending champions Crown Point will be pushed by arch rival Merrillville in their regional. TMishawaka will have another strong team this year and will look to avenge their first round exit from team state last year. Delphi and Lafayette Jeff will also battle it out for a spot at team state.

The Marion County Tournament is always one of the toughest in the state and this year is no different.  #2 Perry Meridian is the clear favorite, but this field is stacked with quality teams looking to knock off the defending champions.

This weight class is stacked with some exciting matches.  Even with Riley Newkirk moving up to 112 this weight class is still loaded with 3 ranked wrestlers in #1 Nathan Boston, #14 Barry McGinley, and #16 C.J. Whitten.  Jacob Cottey of Perry Meridian rounds out this weight class for some exciting semi finals.

There are no secrets here.  This weight class is all about Perry Meridian’s  #1 Jared McKinley and Roncalli’s #2 Josh Kieffer.  This will be the rematch to the 3 OT win for McKinley last weekend.  These two should be very accustomed to each other by the end of the season.

This weight class should come down to a battle between #10 at 135 Jordan Johnson and #14 Nick Bova.  Johnson finished runner up last year at 125 and Bova finished 3rd at 103.  Even with the big jump in weight Bova has really filled out and has been successful at 130 this year.  Standing in their way are Mikhail Randall of Ben Davis, Brennon Ellis of Roncalli, and Wes Hunt of Speedway.

This weight class should be action packed all day.  This class features four runner ups from last year.  Mike Taylor was  runner up @152 and is the surprise #1 seed.  #8 Derek Harz is the #2 seed and finished runner up @ 145 last season.  Cole Kelly was runner- up at @ 160 last season and #10 Mitchell Judkins of Speedway is a two time runner up and finished 2nd @171 last year.  One these guys will improve on their performance last year and take home the title.

The 2010 Jeff Classic is shaping up to be extremely competitive. The addition of #4 ranked Evansville Mater Dei definitely stiffens the competition. #6 ranked Bloomington South, #15 ranked Jeffersonville, and a very tough Jennings County team will all be in the mix as well. The tournament will feature 20 top 16 ranked individuals. There are 9 returning IHSAA State Qualifiers, 4 of those placing in the top 8. In addition to that, there are 31 Semi-State Qualifiers. Here is a breakdown of each weight class.

#2 ranked and undefeated Jacob Boomsma of Bloomington South will be a heavy favorite. He will likely face semi-state qualifier Evan Vibbert of Mater Dei in the finals.

This should be a great match as they have faced off twice in the past with Schroeder getting 1 victory in overtime and one by 1 point. However, neither one can overlook their semi-final opponents. Schroeder will likely have semi-state qualifier Gary Engleking of Jennings County and Shepherd will likely have semi-state qualifier Sam Goebel of Mater Dei, whom Shepherd defeated last week-end by a score of 11-3.

2010 IndianaMat.com Individual Rankings Preview
The 2010 wrestling season is almost upon us and the crispness of the fall air will soon be turning into a cold and dreary Indiana winter. While it may be cold outside, wrestling rooms and gyms across the state will be heating up full of hard working athletes beating each other up for the same goal…to wrestle under the lights at Conseco Fieldhouse. This year 118 wrestlers return that have wrestled at Conseco with 14 of them having experienced wrestling under the spotlight. The champions from last year face the formidable task of parading around with a bulls-eye on their back all season long. One by one, wrestlers across the state will try to knock off the returning champion, with very few, if any, succeeding. The wrestler with the biggest bulls-eye is probably Portage’s Sean McMurray. He recently committed to wrestle for the Michigan State Spartans next year and is looking to bring home state title number three this year to put him in some very elite company. Another returning champion to look out for is Union County’s Cody Phillips. He was undefeated en route to his 103lbs championship last year and looks to continue that streak this season.
 
Senior Brandon Wright, formerly of Cathedral, but now wrestling for Warren Central will be fun to watch. He has wrestled under the lights all three years, but has only won once under them. He will look to close out his spectacular career with one last victory under the lights. Last year’s freshmen sensation Jason Tsirtsis will look to continue to follow in the enormous shadow his older brother left for him. Last year he upended the hands on favorite in the semi-finals. This year however, he will be the hands on favorite.
 
Frankie Porras of Hobart is returning this year looking to defend his title from last year. He faced stiff competition all year long and came away with a title. Another Crown Point wrestler, Anthony Hawkins is looking to capture his second straight title after coming away with the 112lbs title in a loaded weight class last year. He will most likely have to beat some of the same faces this year that he did last year on his way to a championship. Last, but not least is another Union County wrestler in Michael Duckworth. Duckworth is extremely talented and looks to close out his career with yet another title.

Fourteen state qualifiers return including all of last year’s state placers. You can also add in Brenden Campbell of New Castle who was undefeated before bowing out of the state tournament due to appendicitis. Returning champion Cody Phillips will look to not only defend his title, but keep his unbeaten streak alive.

Sixteen wrestlers return here that have previous experience at Conseco Fieldhouse. Included in the returners are the 1st through 7th place finishers from last year. Anthony Hawkins of Crown Point leads the way, but with the talent in this weight class, nothing is a given.
 
119lbs
Eleven wrestlers with previous experience return to 119lbs. Only four wrestlers return that placed at this weight last year however. Brandon Wright is the consensus #1 after his arch nemesis Camden Eppert graduated.
 
125lbs
Eleven wrestlers also return to 125lbs with experience at state with five of them returning with medals from last year. Jason Tsirtsis of Crown Point is the returning champ, looking for his second title.
 
130lbs
An amazing fourteen wrestlers return to 130lbs with state experience this season. However, only three have wrestled on Saturday. Defending champion Frankie Porras of Hobart will look to continue the strong Brickie wrestling tradition with his second title this season.
 
135lbs
Only three previous state qualifiers return to this weight class. Gone is defending champion Taylor March of East Noble. The highest returning placer and preseason #1 is Eric Roach of Crown Point.
 
140lbs
Ten wrestlers return with previous state experience at 140lbs with four of them returning state placers. Gone however, is two-time champion Steven Sandefer of Mishawaka. Leading the way this year is Ryan Stahl who now attends Mishawaka.
 
145lbs
Five wrestlers return to 145lbs with previous experience at state. Three of them brought home medals last year. Culver Academy’s first state champion Daniel Young has graduated opening the door for preseason #1 Sammy Bennett of Anderson Highland.
 
152lbs
Five returning wrestlers are at 152lbs, including four returning placers. Leading the way is two-time champion Sean McMurray of Portage.
 
160lbs
Nine wrestlers come back to 160lbs with experience at Conseco Fieldhouse. Of those wrestlers, only one has some hardware to show for their experience. Gone are seven of the eight placers from last year including state champion Briar Runyan of Martinsville. Tyler Willis of Cathedral is the preseason #1 after a 7th place finish last year.

Six wrestlers return to 171lbs with previous state experience, but only two of them have placed previously. Defending champion Michael Duckworth of Union County returns in hopes of capturing his second straight title.

Four wrestlers return to 189lbs this year with state experience. Last year’s champion Marcus Shrewsbury of Crown Point has graduated and moved on to wrestling in the Big 10. Two of the returning placers have come home with medals including preseason #1 Aaron Stevenson of Indian Creek.
 
215lbs
Only three wrestlers return to 215lbs with previous experience, but all three are returning placers. Gone is last year’s champion Billy Baker of Bellmont, but his opponent in the finals last year is back. Christian Lentz of Mishawaka is the preseason #1 after a second place finish last year.
 
285lbs
Seven wrestlers return to the heavyweight division with experience at Conseco. However, only one of those wrestlers came away with a medal from last year’s experience. Gone is champion Adam Chalfant of Winamac. The highest returning placer and preseason #1 is James Travis of Merrillville.

2010 Fort Wayne Semi-State Preview
The Woodlan(Fort Wayne) semi-state had a great year last year with Taylor March, Billy Baker and Adam Chalfant all bringing home state titles and Drew Graber and Ryan Stahl came away with runner-up finishes. That is the good, the bad is that none of those wrestlers are returning this year. All of them graduated, except Ryan Stahl who is now attending Mishawaka. There are plenty of good wrestlers returning out of the area and many are looking to make their mark on Indiana wrestling history. Derek Bevans of Yorktown will be coming back and looking to finish on the top rung on the ladder after being a state contestant the past three years. Three state placers from 125lbs return this year, including two-time placer Tony Lovejoy of Bishop Luers, Andrew Heistand of Yorktown and Dan Rothgeb of Whitko. The semi-state’s highest placer, Brock Norton returns after only losing one match last year. Two other state placers return from the 145lbs weight class in Dalton Sparks of Peru and Zach Corpe of Elkhart Memorial. Corpe is attempting to follow in his big brother’s footsteps and become a state champion his senior year. The only other returning state placer from 2009 is Dylan Green of Kokomo at 215lbs.
 
The best teams in this area are pretty much the same from year to year. Bellmont and Yorktown will battle it out for the Adams Central Team Regional title, while Elkhart Memorial returns a strong line-up that will have to go through the Jimtown Team Regional and the Mishawaka Cavemen.
