413Cadet Freestyle Day Two Recap
Three of the Cadet wrestlers entered the day undefeated, but only one will leave that way. Mitch Sliga advanced to the finals by beating his two opponents on the day. Both matches were close, but Sliga was in control the whole time. Sliga will have Adam Josephson of Minnesota in the finals to complete his Triple Crown run.
The other two wrestlers, Paul Petrov and Kyle Ayersman, did not fair as well. They both dropped their two matches on the day. Due to both having byes, they did not have enough classification points to get them into the top four in their pools. It was a great showing by both of these young men during this tournament.
412IHSWCA Update from Cale Hoover January 20th, 2010
IHSWCA Members and Wrestling Community:
I would like to wish everyone the best of luck as we enter the most exciting time of the wrestling season. The high school state tournament series is less than two weeks away. Wrestlers of all ages are hitting the mats looking to improve their skill. Everyone be sure to enjoy this time and keep things in perspective.
I have spoken with several coaches who were disappointed to see the change in format of the sectional entry list. It came as a surprise to the IHSWCA executive board as well. We asked last spring that the eight teams competing at team state be able to weigh-in twenty eight competitors. The IHSAA took this and decided to make a change which forces many of us to make some difficult decisions. I have expressed my displeasure to the IHSAA, to little avail at this point.
We have several important items on our agenda these next few weeks. At the sectional seeding meetings on January 25th, each school will be completing a survey and receiving an information packet. We are looking to gather information that will help the association make decisions on the direction that best suits the sport of wrestling in Indiana. This will be conducted at the seeding meeting to guarantee one hundred percent participation.
The information packet will include a membership application, assistant coach of the year application, and an Academic All-State nomination form. Remember, you need to be a member to nominate your assistants, students for Academic All-state, or vote on or receive coach of the year. This season we will vote on regional coach of the year awards for all sixteen regionals. IHSWCA member coaches will be given a ballot on the morning of our individual regional. Those ballots will be due to the regional representative by the end of the day (we are still looking for a regional representative from the Calumet regional. The coach of the year will be determined by a vote of the regional reps and executive board from the sixteen candidates you select. Again, you must be a member to vote or receive the head coach of the year honor. Please bring membership forms to your regional if you need to join or contact JD Minch (jdminch@nm.k12.in.us) as soon as possible.
We hope these changes give coaches a sense of greater belonging to the association and enable you to have a voice.
Thank you and good luck.

412Cadets Place 9th in Freestyle
Lead by Cody LeCount's second place performance, Indiana finished 9th in the team standings in Cadet Freetyle wrestling. LeCount made the finals, but fell short to Cali phenom Aaron Pico. In the morning session LeCount defeated Pennsylvania's Josh Maruca in three periods to advance to the finals. Stevan Micic came up short in his bid to repeat as national champion dropping his pool bout to another California stud in Zahid Valencia. He came back strong in his third place match and defeated Coy Ozias from Virginia in straight periods. Brandon James improved on his 8th place performance from last year and finished 6th at the 120lbs weight class.
Earning his third USAW All-American plaque of 2012 was Jeffersonville's Gavan Jolley-Little. He finished 4th in a very tough heavyweight class. Another big guy who had a stellar tournament and also finished with three USAW All-American plaques was Franklin's Conner Tolley. He had a big pin in a close bout to take home 5th place. His spring has included a runner-up finish at Folkstyle Nationals, 4th at FILA Cadets in freestyle and Greco, a runner-up finish in Cadet Greco and a 5th place finish in Cadet Freestyle. Jose Champagne finished in 8th place in the 132lbs weight class. The incoming Lowell Red Devil and one of the top incoming freshmen in the nation had a great tournament in one of the toughest weight classes. The finals match will likely be Jeffersonville junior Jimmy Pratt (33-9) and Pike Central’s Hunter Manning (26-7). Other likely semi-state qualifiers are Corydon’s Ryan DeWitt (22-3) and Mitchells Trevor Phillips (28-8).
285
Jasper’s Tyler Jenkins (34-2)(semi-state qualifier) #6 ranking in the state, will be the heavy favorite and will likely have New Albany senior Taylor Hoke(32-6)(semi-state qualifier) in the finals. Other likely semi-state qualifiers are Jeffersonville’s Elijah Curtley (25-12) and Southridge’s John Veatch (26-10).

Wrestlers to Watch
Mitch Sliga will be wrestling both style and attempting to become Indiana's first Cadet Triple Crown winner. Sliga already has Triple Crown titles as a Novice in 2007 and as a Midget in 2005. Earlier this spring he won the USAW Folkstyle Nationals with only one match going three periods. During the IHSAA season Sliga placed third in the state as a freshman. The past two seasons Sliga has not lost at the prestigious Schoolboy Duals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.
Neal Molloy is also coming off of a USAW Folkstyle Nationals title and will be participating in freestyle only. During the IHSAA season Molloy qualified for state at 119lbs.
State runner-up Paul Petrov will look to make an impact on the national scene wrestling at 112lbs.
State champion Kyle Ayersman will also be wrestling at 112lbs for Team Indiana. Ayersman has had national success before, winning three matches at Fargo last year and has placed three times at Folkstyle Nationals.
Other wrestlers that highlight the Cadet roster are a pair of Cathedral wrestlers Brian Harvey(6th at 112lbs wrestling 130lbs) and Austin Neibarger(8th at 152lbs wrestling 160lbs).

405Jay County Regional Preview
The Jay County Regional will once again be highlighted by two teams: Yorktown and Bellmont. With two first round matches and six possible finals matches looming, this regional could very well have the feeling of a dual meet. These two teams will battle it out Wednesday, and I am sure that the intensity from Wednesday will carry over to Saturday for both of these teams. Even though Yorktown and Bellmont will dominate this Saturday, there will be other schools that will have a say so in some of the weight classes. There will be 16 ranked wrestlers competing in this regional with all weight classes but 152 having at least one ranked wrestler. Heavyweight leads the way with three ranked wrestlers: #3 Ross Janney (Yorktown) #4 Jim West (South Adams) and    #7 Daniel Meyer (Bellmont).
103: Favorite – Cody Walburn of Adams Central
This weight class is led by two wrestlers: Cody Walburn (Adams Central) and Brock Bevans (Yorktown). Ben Fiechter (Southern Wells) is not to be overlooked either, because if Bevans is focusing on Walburn then he might have to wait until next week to get a chance to wrestle him.
Top four in alphabetical order: Bevans, Cox, Fiechter, Walburn
112: Favorite – Stevie Gonzales of Delta
There will be little, if any drama, in this weight class when deciding the champion. However, this weight class has the possibility of having three great first round matches that could all possible be classified as pick’em matches. It will not be out of the question for the Delta Sectional to have a clean sweep at this weight class, but at the same time Jay County could take three of the top four spots as well. Do not miss the first round of this weight class, because it may be some of the most competitive matches of the day in the weight class,
Top four in alphabetical order: Bryant, Gonzales, Phillips, Roe
119: Favorite – Phillip Gerber of Bluffton
This weight class is full of talented underclassmen. Leading the way is sophomore Phillip Gerber (Bluffton) and freshman Isaiah Bradley (Muncie Southside). Gerber, due to owning a win over Bradley, has to be considered the favorite in this weight class. This weight class has four wrestlers with the talent and ability to win this weight: Bradley, Gerber, Batt (South Adams), and Anderson (Yorktown). Anderson and Batt have the toughest road to winning the title because they face each other the first round, and then will most likely face Gerber in the semifinals. Waiting on that winner will probably be Bradley. We may get to see a rematch from the ECIC finals between Bradley and Gerber or we may get to see a rematch of the sectional finals between Bradley and Anderson. I am sure though that Batt and the other wrestlers in the weight class will have something different to say about that.
Top four in alphabetical order: Anderson, Bradley, Gerber, Keuneke
125: Favorite – Derek Bevans of Yorktown
The top four in this weight class have distinguished themselves over the other half. Bevans, ranked third in the latest poll, leads the way in this weight class with a perfect 42-0 record. He will await the winner of the Perry (Bluffton) v. Armantrout (Muncie Southside) semifinal. Perry and Armantrout met last year in regional and this year at the ECIC, with Perry pulling out close wins both times. This looks to be another exciting match for these two wrestlers.
Top four in alphabetical order: Armantrout, Bevans, Perry, Striker
130: Favorite – Devon Jackson of Yorktown
Devon Jackson is the second of three consecutive STUDS that Yorktown will place in the finals. Jackson, who is also ranked third, brings an unblemished record of 41-0 into the regional. This weight class will give us a rematch of last weeks upset when Hormann (Bellmont) looks to prove it was not an upset as he will face Fiechter (Southern Wells).
Top four in alphabetical order: Fiechter, Hormann, Jackson, Meska
135: Favorite – Andrew Hiestand of Yorktown
The third consecutive third ranked wrestler for Yorktown, Andrew Hiestand, will lead a talented group of wrestlers. Faurote (Bellmont) is the only wrestler here that will give Hiestand a challenge this week. Placements for this weight are crucial because next weeks semistate is a meat grinder at 135!
Top four in alphabetical order: Faurote, Harry, Hiestand, Schultz
140: Favorite – Josh Martin of Randolph Southern
This weight will be highlighted by two really good first round matchups: Busse (Bellmont) vs. Rench (Yorktown) and Burnfield (South Adams) vs. Quinn (Wes-Del).A finals match up of Schwartz and Martin looks to provide a lot of excitement.
Top four in alphabetical order: Burnfield, Martin, Rench, Schwartz
145: Favorite – Josh Ehr of South Adams
Josh Ehr is the top dog in this weight class. Harper (Yorktown) is no slouch and will be up for the challenge. Ehr must first be able to get passed Heuchan (Muncie Central) who has been known to put many talented wrestlers on their back.
Top four in alphabetical order: Boyd, Ehr, Harper, Heuchan
152: Favorite – John Mahlan of Bellmont
This weight class is arguably the most wide open with no clear cut favorite. Mahlan, Jones (Southern Wells) and Smith (Yorktown) will all have their eyes on the title. Reed (Muncie Southside) and Simmons (Winchester0 have a great shot at pulling a first round upset. This will be a fun weight class to watch because anything can and will happen.
Top four in alphabetical order: Jones, Mahlan, Simmons, Smith
160: Favorite – Ryley Hankenson of Bellmont
This weight class is down a bit at this year’s regional. Hankenson is the clear cut favorite with the other three spots up in the air. If you sit through the excitement of the 152 weight class, don’t leave because the first round at 160 will be just as exciting with no obvious favorites in any match other than Hankenson’s.
Top four in alphabetical order: Fuller, Hankenson, Higgins, Holcomb
171: Favorite – Trent Castner of Yorktown
Castner is a slight favorite at this weight class over Stebing (Bellmont). Hopefully these two will battle it out Wednesday and give us a preview of what to expect on Saturday. The Taylor (South Adams) and Mock (Winchester) will be a very competitive match.
Top four in alphabetical order: Castner, Pointer, Taylor, Stebing
189: Favorite – Travis Thatcher of Bellmont
This will be another finals match up between Bellmont and Yorktown as Thatcher and Brown (Yorktown) are the top two wrestlers in this weight class. Two first round matches worth watching will be that of Miller (Southern Wells) vs. Crabtree (Muncie Southside) and Garringer (Jay County) vs. Folkner (Wes-Del).
Top four in alphabetical order: Brown, Crabtree, Folkner, Thatcher
215: Favorite – Seth Biberstine of Southern Wells
This weight class has four wrestlers with a legit shot at winning the regional. The semifinal match ups will be great and the winner of this weight class will have to have a very solid day of wrestling. Chalfant (Winchester) Bultemeir (Bellmont) and James (Jay County) all are capable o winning this Saturday, and we can not sleep on Neff from Yorktown either.
Top four in alphabetical order: Biberstine, Bultemeir, Chalfant, James
HW: Favorite – Ross Janney of Yorktown
Ross Janney leads a very talented and highly ranked HW class at the Jay County Regional. Three wrestlers in this weight class are ranked in the top seven of the latest indianamat rankings. Throw in the Justice (Blackford) win over West (South Adams) last week and this weight class becomes very interesting. The semifinals will be fun to watch and will both be on the same level as the wrestling that will happen in the finals match. Meyer (Bellmont) and Janney may give us a preview On Wednesday, but they both got a lot of work to do before they get to the finals.
Top four in alphabetical order: Janney, Justice, Meyer, West

4042009 Junior Women's Freestyle Preview
Four female wrestlers will be representing Team Indiana this year in Fargo for the Junior Women's Freestyle National Championships. Last year Indiana had two All-Americans with Becky Cissell of Jeffersonville placing 6th at 124lbs and Demi Strub of Lawrenceburg placing 7th at 139lbs. Since 1998 Indiana has had six Cadet All-Americans and eight Junior All-Americans. Rachel Monroe is Indiana's highest finisher with a second place finish in 2001. Three girls have been two-time All-Americans in Fargo with Monica Clay doing it first and Rebekah Tolbert and Ashleigh Lybargar being the other two.
This year's team will be led by returning All-American Demi Strub. She will be looking to become Indiana's fourth two-time All-American and first time national champion. Strub also finished second this year at the Girls Folkstyle Nationals. Another top wrestler is Sarah Hildenbrandt who finished fifth at the Girls Folkstyle Nationals this year. Hildenbrandt was ranked 11th in the nation in the preseason rankings. Sarah Haas will be looking to finish on the podium this year after just missing it by one match last year. Melody Koller is the last of the quintet that will be going to Fargo this year. She wrestled 125lbs for Brown County High School this past year.

4022009 Cadet Greco-Roman Preview
Last year
Last year Indiana had four All-Americans in Cadet Greco-roman. Leading the way ws Cameron Vlahos who finished 4th. Mark Collett and Tony Lovejoy both finished 6th, while Drake Stein finished 8th.
With all of last year’s All-Americans moving on to the Junior age division, this year there are many new faces on the Cadet Greco-roman team. Leading the way is state qualifier Blake Rueger who will wrestle at 140lbs. Another wrestler to watch is Sean Mappes who went 5-1 at the National Duals just a few weeks ago. Beau Judd has some experience at the national level when he placed third at the Schoolboy Folkstyle Nationals in 2007. Three other wrestlers have semi-state experience in Jason Sipher, Kirk Johnson and Ben Farmer. One other wrestler to keep your eye on is Wayne Specht who was the folkstyle state champ this year with many dominating wins.

400Zionsville Sectional Preview
Greyhounds, Royals and 'Rocks, oh my....This year will almost certainly be a dogfight for the team title. If seeds hold, Westfield would beat Carmel by one point, but seeds seldom hold in every weight class. As the day progresses, look for Carmel and Westfield to pull away from the pack, which will include HSE, Fishers and Zionsville. I'll take defending champ Carmel by an eyelash.
103
Predicted order of finish
1. Inman, Westfield
2. Snyder, HSE
3. Miller, Rossville
4. Garcia, Frankfort
Outlook: 103 can be kind of unpredictable, but seeds should hold here, with returning Regional qualifier Sparky Inman leading the way. Rossville's Kyle Miller was a conference champ and Frankfort's Manuel Garcia was the 5th place finisher at this weight last year. Watch out for Carmel's Chris Simmons and Fisher's Vinny Pavan, as they have average records but wrestle beastly competition.
112
Predicted order of finish
1. Ling, Fishers
2. Parham, Carmel
3. Campbell, Lebanon
4. Watson, HSE
Outlook: This is a pretty tough, pretty experienced field. Parham is a returning sectional and regional champ and is very capable of knocking off Ling, a semistate qualifier in '09, for the crown here. Campbell is also a returning semistate qualifier and is capable of winning the weight.
119
Predicted order of finish
1. #19 Julien, Lebanon
2. Ash, HSE
3. Rokop, Carmel
4. Leicht, CC
Outlook: This is returning state-placer Julien's weight class to lose, and he won't, barring an injury or similar freak occurrence. A lot of unpredicability after Julien, with regional qualifier Ash getting the nod as runner-up.
125
Predicted order of finish
1. #14 Sommer, Carmel
2. Roman, HSE
3. Campbell, Lebanon
4. Cox, Zville
Outlook: Returning semistate qualifier Sommer leads the way here, although he could be surprised by HSE's Roman, a semistate qualifier in '08 and regional qualifier in '09 who spent some time in the state ranking this year as well.
130
Predicted order of finish
1. Lawson, Frankfort
2. Stachler, Zville
3. Bankert, Westfield
4. Riley, Fishers
Outlook: Very wide open with a lack of proven wrestlers in this class. Lawson has a sterling record but Frankfort doesn't wrestle as many of the big boys as other teams in this sectional.
135
Predicted order of finish
1. Billman, Westfield
2. Davis, WeBo
3. Calhoun, HSE
4. Hume, Sheridan
Outlook: Another wide open weight, with a lot of possible scenarios. Billman has improved tremendously from '09 and is one of a few who can win this weight, including Calhoun, Davis and even Billman's first opponent Simpson, a surprise semistate qualifier a year ago.
140
Predicted order of finish
1. #12 White, Westfield
2. #10 Scurria, Carmel
3. Irick, HSE
4. Laughner, Frankfort
Outlook: Probably the toughest weight in Zionsville. White vs. Scurria will be one of a handful of likely matchups that will go a long way in determining the team champ. Irick is a returning regional qualifier, but he has an unfortunate matchup with returning semistate qualifier Cameron Van Camp of Lebanon.
145
Predicted order of finish
1. #6 Robinson, HSE
2. Miller, Rossville
3. Smith, Westfield
4. Varner, Frankfort
Outlook: This is clearly Mr. Robinson's neighborhood, but returning semistate qualifier Miller won't roll over for him--it won't matter in the end, as Robinson begins his march to Conseco.
152
Predicted order of finish
1. Evans, Clinton Central
2. #13 Frascell, Carmel
3. Montes, Fishers
4. Frauhiger, Zville
Outlook: Pretty tough weight class here. Evans is the one of the best kids you haven't likely seen and Frascella isn't ranked so highly by accident. Should be a great finals matchup, although Montes and Frauhiger could easily throw a monkey-wrench in those plans.
160
Predicted order of finish
1. #12 Anderson, Carmel
2. Evans, CC
3. Youngs, Zville
4. Dewhitt, Fishers
Outlook: Another nice finals matchup here, if seeds hold. Youngs is the most likely candidate to spoil the party, as he's a pretty stout #3 seed here.
171
Predicted order of finish
1. #19 Howenstein, Zville
2. Smitley, HSE
3. Wright, Lebanon
4. Schaeffer, Westfield
Outlook: '09 Semistate qualifier Howenstein should make hay here. Smitley/Wright should be a good semis match.
189
Predicted order of finish
1. #3 Sliga, Fishers
2. Nichols, Westfield
3. Morris, Carmel
4. Bobbitt, Frankfort
Outlook: The beginning of the Sliga Age begins in earnest. The slick freshman should have his way in one of the manliest weight classes. This could be the first of four potential sectional crowns for the all-world frosh. Nichols should provide a good test in the finals.
215
Predicted order of finish
1. Jacquet, CC
2. Carnes, Westfield
3. Pedigo, Zville
4. Courter, Carmel
Outlook: I'm going against the grain a little in picking Jacquet, but the '09 Team Indiana member is capable of winning the weight. Pedigo and especially Carnes are certainly capable of blowing this pick to shreds, but I'll take the returning semistate qualifier in Jacquet over regional qualifier Pedigo in the semis, and then Jacquet over Carnes.
HWT
Predicted order of finish
1. Hollander, Carmel
2. Melby, Westfield
3. Boley, Lebanon
4. Howard, Frankfort
Outlook: Hollander won this weight at last year's sectional, but not one wrestler from the sectional advanced past regionals. This year's final could very well determine the team title. One thing to watch for is Hollander's likely first match vs. Killen. Killen was a 3rd place finisher last year at this weight. Boley is the only returning semistate qualifier among this year's participants.

3982009 Scholastic Duals Results
The IHSWCA leaders organized another trip to the Brute Scholastic Duals this spring with the best underclassmen in the state on two teams. Both teams wrestled very well with both winning their pools and advancing to the championship pool. After the dust had settled, Pennsylvania Blue came out on top, while Indiana Gold finished 4th and Indiana Blue finished 5th. Individually, two Crown Point wrestlers, Jason Tsirtsis and Eric Roach, finished undefeated on the weekend. Tsirtsis wrestling at 125lbs finished with an 8-0 record with no opponents coming within five points of him. Three other wrestlers finished with one loss, Frankie Porras, Sean McMurray and Braden Atwood. Atwood avenged his only loss of the season to state champion Michael Duckworth by beating him 9-3. Wrestlers that finished with only two blemishes on their record were Anothony Hawkins, Derek Bevans, Sammy Bennett, Aaron Stevenson, Ross Janey for Indiana Gold and Branden Nelson for Indiana Blue. Congratulations to all of the wrestlers on a fine weekend of wrestling.
