IHSWCA Update from Cale Hoover January 20th, 2010

      IHSWCA Members and Wrestling Community:

I would like to wish everyone the best of luck as we enter the most exciting time of the wrestling season.  The high school state tournament series is less than two weeks away.  Wrestlers of all ages are hitting the mats looking to improve their skill.  Everyone be sure to enjoy this time and keep things in perspective.

I have spoken with several coaches who were disappointed to see the change in format of the sectional entry list.  It came as a surprise to the IHSWCA executive board as well.  We asked last spring that the eight teams competing at team state be able to weigh-in twenty eight competitors.  The IHSAA took this and decided to make a change which forces many of us to make some difficult decisions.  I have expressed my displeasure to the IHSAA, to little avail at this point.

We have several important items on our agenda these next few weeks.  At the sectional seeding meetings on January 25th, each school will be completing a survey and receiving an information packet.  We are looking to gather information that will help the association make decisions on the direction that best suits the sport of wrestling in Indiana.  This will be conducted at the seeding meeting to guarantee one hundred percent participation.

The information packet will include a membership application, assistant coach of the year application, and an Academic All-State nomination form.  Remember, you need to be a member to nominate your assistants, students for Academic All-state, or vote on or receive coach of the year.  This season we will vote on regional coach of the year awards for all sixteen regionals.  IHSWCA member coaches will be given a ballot on the morning of our individual regional.  Those ballots will be due to the regional representative by the end of the day (we are still looking for a regional representative from the Calumet regional.  The coach of the year will be determined by a vote of the regional reps and executive board from the sixteen candidates you select.  Again, you must be a member to vote or receive the head coach of the year honor.  Please bring membership forms to your regional if you need to join or contact JD Minch (jdminch@nm.k12.in.us) as soon as possible.

We hope these changes give coaches a sense of greater belonging to the association and enable you to have a voice.

      Thank you and good luck.

2009 Al Smith Finals in Pictures

*Note: If a parent, wrestler or coach wants a copy of any of the pictures, please email me at Admin@IndianaMat.com and I will send them to you.

While Mishawaka took home the team crown with 12 placers, there were many great match-ups of ranked and even unranked wrestlers in the finals. Here is a picture recap of the finals.

Jarred Brooks of Warsaw used some slick takedowns and great riding to beat Zac Stevens of Merrillville.

Jarred Brooks of Warsaw rode tough, but it was his four takedowns that propelled him to victory

After a third place performance last year, Brooks was very elated to take home the championship this year.

Kyle Ayersman of Lake Central Rode Paul Beck of Mishawaka the entire second period

In the third period, Beck returned the favor despite many escape attempts by Ayersman

Ayersman reached his feet numerous times, but Beck held on for the 2-1 victory

Beck returned Ayersman to the mat each time he stood up.

Brandon Nelson of Lawrence North defends a takedown attempt by Alex Gregory of Penn in the 119lbs finals

Nelsen's escape in the second period was the difference in the 1-0 match

Gregory forced some funky positions in the third period, but Nelsen ended up on top in each one

Anthony Napules of Merrillville rode tough not surrendering a point to Chesterton's Zach Thornton

Nick Schrader of Mishawaka escapes the grasp of Calumet's Mike Clark

Schrader utilized a well timed toss for five points to gain the lead late in the third period

Clark then could not escape to tie the match

Matt Guerra of Mishawaka and Jeremy Hill of Jimtown await the coin toss in the second period of the 135lbs finals

Jeremy Hill of Jimtown hit a sweet peterson for four points to bust the match wide open

As always, the referees are overworked at the Al Smith

Hill tried to escape late to tie the match and send it to OT

Hill bypassed the escape and earned a reversal with very little time left to win by one point.

Matt Milton of Center Grove tries to escape from defending champion Frankie Porras of Hobart in the 140lbs finals

Another attempt to escape a state champ's grasp

Alex Surma of Munster and Dalton Sparks of Peru wrestled in many funky positions on the mat in the 145lbs finals

Surma fought off a cradle by Sparks

Sparks had a tough time getting away from the lanky Surma

East Noble's Jimmy LaRowe took it to Mishawaka's Ryan Stahl with an early headlock attempt

...but Stahl rolled through and dealt LaRowe his second loss of the year.

Anthony Quiroz of Chesterton and Zack Corpe of Elkhart Memorial battled it out at 160lbs

Corpe scored a couple takedowns on last year's state runner-up

Quiroz fought off numerous cradle attempts from Corpe

Princeton's Drake Stein dominated Andy Wiseman of Penn in the finals, earning a fall in the third period

Travis Thatcher of Bellmont his a blast double for a takedown and nearfall to win the 189lbs title over Nate Fowler of Calumet

Mishawaka's Christian Lentz had numerous deep takedown attempts against Nate Cleveland of Lowell in the 215lbs finals

Cleveland successfully defends a takedown attempt by Lentz

Another deep attempt that Cleveland fought off

Cleveland rode tough, but a light weight roll through got Lentz a reversal in the third period

Both Lentz and Cleveland are excellent athletes for big guys.

Last but not least James Travis of Merrillville won his second Al Smith title over Travis Thomas of Mishawaka

      2009 Mishawaka Al Smith Preview

      2009 Al Smith Invitational

The Al Smith Invitational always bring wrestling fans some of the best match-ups of the year prior to the state tournament series and this year is no different. There are dozens of ranked wrestlers that will do battle on Tuesday, December 29th, and Wednesday, Decembert 30th. In addition, there appears to be a nice battle shaping up for the team crown as coach David Maldonado brings his fourth ranked Pirates into the Princess city in an effort to knock off defending champion Mishawaka. Other squads looking for team hardware include state ranked Penn, Lawrence North and Bellmont. Fans unable to make the trip to Mishawaka will be able to follow the action via IndianaMat sponsored updates at Track Wrestling. Follow the link here or on the messageboard and enjoy.

      Track Wrestling link:

Following is a weight class by weight class breakdown of what many consider to be the state’s toughest individual tournament.
      103
Merrillville’s second ranked and top seeded Zac Stevens is the favorite at 103 as he was runner-up last year to Lake Central’s Kyle Ayersman. Stevens is a two-time state finalist, finishing fourth last year. He should cruise into the semifinals where he may be tested by the winner between 5th seeded and 10th ranked Mikey Witous of Penn and 4th seeded Danny Hamm of Prairie Heights.

The other side of the bracket appears a little more wide open, but look for Warsaw’s third ranked and second seeded Jarred Brooks to navigate the minefield and get to the finals. To do so, Brooks will likely have to defeat South Bend Adams’ Sam Ferdig and either ninth ranked Shannon Garrettson of Peru or previously ranked senior Ivan Ruiz of Munster.
      112
Much like the 103 class, two headliners shine at the top of this field with top ranked Paul Beck and top seeded, fourth ranked Kyle Ayersman look likely to battle for the championship. Beck and Ayersman have both won titles here and know how to wrestle through two days of heated action. Those with the best chance of knocking off the top two include Merrillville freshman Adam Garcia (#9), 12th ranked and state placer Aurelio Medina of Munster, the hot wrestling and 16th ranked Robert Boston of Lawrence North, and Jimtown’s sixth seeded Nick Crume.
      119
Four ranked wrestlers will do battle at 119 and a host of contenders look to make their mark on the state scene in this wide open class. Brandon Nelson of Lawrence North has plenty of big match experience but appears to be on the tougher side of the bracket with state ranked Al Padilla (#10) of Merrillville, Mishawaka’s Layten Binion (#12), along with fourth seeded Jordan Legan of Center Grove. Alex Gregory of Penn is a returning state placer whose road to the finals looks a little easier. Will the south rise with third seeded Alex Griesemer of Princeton or seventh seeded Baron Rieker of Columbus East? Look for a couple of unseeded wrestlers to make their way to the podium in this weight class.
      125
Merrillville’s Anthony Napules is the number one seed and heavy favorite to take the title at this weight class. He will be tested on his side of the bracket which includes state ranked Bryan Smith of Lake Central (#15) along with the always scrappy Taylor Wisler of Mishawaka (#8). On the other side of the bracket look for the winner between seventh ranked Zach Thornton of Chesterton and 12th ranked Travis Barroquillo of Prairie Heights to be Napules’ match-up in the finals.
      130
This weight class appears to have many opportunities for unseeded wrestlers to make some noise. Look for top seeded and fourth ranked Nick Schrader to make his way to the finals. Along the way he is likely to be tested by unseeded Jordan East of Southport and fourth seeded Collin Crume of Jimtown. On the other side of the bracket Frankie Valdivia of Merrillville might just pull of the minor upset of second seeded Mike Clark of Calumet. Unseed Greg Bell of Lawrence North is a name to watch in this bracket.
      135
Mishawaka’s sixth ranked but third seeded Matt Guerra appears to be the class of this field but he will have to endure an absolute meat grinder in order to reach the finals. Guerra will have to beat Penn’s tough Ben Sokol in the second round. (Guerra narrowly beat Sokol 6-5 earlier in the year), Then comes a likely match-up with 11th ranked at 140, Matt Rattay of Lawrence North. This is just on the first day. Jimtown’s Jeremy Hill always seems to wrestle well at the Al Smith and appears to have an easier road to the finals. Will Guerra be too beat up after day one to top Hill in the finals? Look for Hill in the upset!
      140
Hobart has has quite a streak of wrestlers in the finals at the Al Smith and that string will continue as number one ranked Frankie Porras is the overwhelming favorite to win the title this year. Look for a Caveman surprise out of the lower half of the bracket.
      145
Three top notch competitors appear to be in the running for the gold hardware in this weight class. Munster’s top seeded and third ranked Alex Surma is a monster on top and looks to have a slight edge over Lowell’s third seeded and second ranked (140) Cameryn Brady. Peru’s second seeded and fourth ranked Dalton Sparks will likely battle Brady for spot in the finals. Look for New Prairie’s young Joe Zigler to make a name for himself this year.
      152
Mishawaka’s state runner-up Ryan Stahl is the odds on favorite in this weight class. He is top seeded and second ranked. His only loss this year came against Sean McMurray 4-0. Look for up to three unseeded wrestlers to make it to the podium and also look for a surprise finalist from Penn.
      160
A deep field of quality wrestlers will make this one of the best weight classes at this year’s tournament. Look for most of the seeds to hold chalk. Realistically, up to six wrestlers could take this year’s crown. Top two seeds Anthony Quiroz of Chesterton and Zack Corpe of Elkhart Memorial are both dealing with injury issues and this might open the door for the likes of Alex White of Mishawaka, Austin Kunze of Penn, Caleb Smith of Princeton or Ryley Hankenson of Bellmont to pull of some upsets and take the crown for themselves.
      171
Last years biggest surprise was Princeton’s Drake Stein taking the title at the 152. He will not sneak up on anyone this year as he is ranked second in the state and is this year’s top seed. Look for him to cruise into the finals. The other side of the bracket is more interesting with a potential match-up between Mishawaka’s sixth ranked Dick Morin and Penn’s ninth ranked Andy Wiseman. They did not match-up earlier in the year due to some line-up shifting so this will be a high anticipated battle. Stein’s easier route to the finals may be enough to carry the day versus the Wiseman/Morin winner.
      189
A wide open field and many likely upsets will dot this weight class. Look for the super athletic Kourtney Berry of Merrillville to upset top seed Travis Thatcher of Bellmont in a tight battle. On the other side of the bracket second seeded Timmy Buckingham will win an entertaining, high scoring match with Calumet’s Nathan Fowler. Any one of the top four seeds here could end up atop the awards podium. I say go with Buckingham.
      215
This might be the best weight class in the entire tournament as the top four wrestlers are ranked in the top six in the state. Top ranked and top seeded Christian Lentz of Mishawaka will likely see fourth seed and 6th ranked Andrew Bultemeier of Bellmont in one semi-final. In the other semifinal, second ranked and second seeded Nathan Cleveland will likely battle with area rival, fifth ranked Vlade Nacovski of Lake Central.
      285
Rounding out the weight class breakdown with a bang will be another potential #1 versus #2. Top ranked James Travis of Merrillville is the defending champion and top seed. He will likely face big Travis Thomas of Mishawaka, the state’s 2nd ranked heavy. Don’t count out Bellmont’s undersized but athletic Daniel Meyer. He parlayed an nice showing at last years Al Smith into a state finalist berth.

Hopefully for the fans, the team race will come down to the heavyweight match-up everyone is anticipating. Be sure to follow the team results on Track Wrestling at the following link:

      Indianamat.com Staff Pre-season picks for 2009-2010

Starting with this season, indianamat.com’s staff will be making pre-season predictions and post-season awards. The term pre-season is used loosely, obviously, since we’re well into the season. However, given the nature of the sport, with weight class changes, eligibility issues, move-ins and move-outs, we had to wait a little while to compile our predictions. This was meant as something fun and yet another topic for fans to argue about. Best of luck to all Indiana wrestlers this season.

      Wrestler(s) of the year:

Brandon Wright, Warren Central – Our voters liked Wright’s combination of in-state and national excellence. Wright is a substantial favorite this season at 125 and is off to a great start, including a 14-7 over 2X state placer Justin Kieffer. Wright also nabbed a runner-up finish at the very prestigious Super 32 tourney earlier this year.

      and

Jason Tsirtsis, Crown Point – The staff also liked Tsirtsis’ accomplishments and season outlook, which pretty much mirror Wright’s. Jason is also a prohibitive favorite at 130 and already has two wins over top-10 rivals this season. Tsirtsis followed up an exceptional summer with a runner-up finish at the Super 32 tournament in North Carolina.

      Tie

Also receiving votes:  Sean McMurray, Portage
      Senior wrestler of the year:

Sean McMurray, Portage – The two-time (soon to be three-time?) champ has as impressive a resume as anyone and already has beaten two #2 ranked wrestlers this season. He has significant national accomplishments as well and is one of the truly elite wrestlers in the state.

Also receiving votes: Brandon Wright, Warren Central
      Freshman of the year:

Mitch Sliga, Fishers – Fishers’ freshman sensation got the nod, partially because of his impressive middle-school resume, partially because of the fine season he’s had thus far and partially because he competes at a weight that heavily favors upper-classmen.

Also receiving votes: Neal Molloy – Danville
      Team champs:

Mishawaka – The Cavemen feature depth and quality at all weights, and are greatly bolstered by the presence of former Elkhart Memorial stud Ryan Stahl. The tradition-rich squad put a pretty good beating on the competition at the Traicoff and looked poised for a third all-time team title.

Also receiving votes: Evansville Mater Dei
Merrillville SS wrestler of the year:

      Sean McMurray, Portage

Also receiving votes: Jason Tsirtsis (Crown Point), Eric Roach (Crown Point), Frankie Porras (Hobart)
New Castle SS wrestler of the year:

      Brandon Wright, Warren Central

Also receiving votes: Brenden Campbell (New Castle), Sammy Bennett (Anderson Highland), Cody Phillips (Union County)
Evansville SS wrestler of the year:

Aaron Stevenson, Indian Creek – The standout football player is also a pretty terrific wrestler. Stevenson stormed his way through 189 last year en route to a 3rd place finish as a sophomore. He’s the current #1 ranked wrestler at 189 and looks to garner his first state title this year.

Also receiving votes: John Sims (Evansville Mater Dei), Dustin Kief (Franklin)
Fort Wayne SS wrestler of the year:

Brock Norton, Carroll – Norton had a fantastic year last season and currently carries the heavy crown that comes with a #1 ranking at 135, a very deep and strong weight class.

Also receiving votes: Tony Lovejoy (Fort Wayne Luers), Andrew Hiestand (Yorktown)
      Surprise state finals team:

Yorktown – On the heels of their impressive national performances in Florida and Missouri, the Tigers look to break through this season to qualify for the team title at Center Grove. They have made the big show twice, in 2000 and 2001.

      Coach of the year:

Trent McCormick, Yorktown – It’s kind of hard to top a USA Wrestling National Coach of the year award, but Coach McCormick is a class act and represents the state and his school with incredible integrity, intelligence and hard work…plus, he’s created a pretty beastly program.

Also receiving votes: Darrick Snyder (Mishawaka), Danny Struck (Jeffersonville)

Mishawaka Flexes its Muscle at Traicoff Invitational

The Mishawaka Cavemen made an early season statement to the defending state champs, Crown Point, in the final round of the Chris Traicoff Invitational at Calumet High School. In that final round, Mishawaka rode the momentum of two first period pins at 215 (Christian Lentz) and HWT (Travis Thomas) to cruise to a 43-17 victory. Mishawaka got to the final match by defeating Highland, Westfield, Portage and Franklin Community. Crown Point need to defeat Lake Station Edison, Munster, Franklin and Portage to reach the deciding dual.

      FINAL MATCH BREAKDOWNS:

189 – The final dual started out well for Crown Point as Tyler Kral countered a bear hug throw by Mishawaka’s Danny Abu-shehab with a nice whizzer and put the Caveman grappler to his back to garner a quick 4-0 advantage. Abu-shehab escaped to end the first period 4-1. Kral got another takedown and rode to a 6-1 victory.

215 – Caveman Christian Lentz overwhelmed John Hannon with a takedown and two sets of back points early. Lentz sucked Hannon back on a short sit to secure the pin.

HWT – Mishawaka’s big man Travis Thomas worked an underhook knee pick to put Crown Point’s Josh Swope to his back for five points. Swope fought back to his belly but could not with stand the power half of Thomas who patiently sunk it deep to power over Swope for the pin.

103 – Most fans probably felt this was a swing match in this dual as both Crown Point’s Colton Sarroff and Mishawaka’s Grant Martsolf seemed evenly matched based on who they had wrestled earlier in the day. Sarroff fought off two first period takedown attempts and the period ended with no score. In the second period, Martsolf got the boots in began to work a power half. Martsolf seemed to get high but expertly kept his head and arms in good position and was able to go to work on the young Bulldog’s shoulder with the power half. Martsolf got the three point near fall and the second period ended with a 3-0 lead. Martsolf earned an escape in the third and gave up a late takedown to end the scoring 4-2.

112 – Crown Point forfeits to Mishawaka’s Paul Beck. Beck was a monster all day and not seriously threatened in any of his matches.

119 – Crown Point was in the need of bonus points to get themselves back in this dual and the heart of their line-up begins with defending state champion Anthony Hawkins. He squared off with first year varsity wrestler Layten Binion of

OTHER MATCHES OF NOTE:Sean McMurray probably would have earned Outstanding Wrestler award if this were not a team tournament with victories over #2 Tyler Willis of Cathedral and #2 at 152 Ryan Stahl. In the Mc/Willis match, Willis was very defensive and countered many near takedown attempts. MacMurray was able to escape and use superior riding skills to win 1-0. In the Stahl/McMurray battle, McMurray finished an nice single leg in the first period and powered a nearside cradle for two nearfall points. Stahl was able to ride McMurray the entire 2nd period but was unable to turn the Portage two time champ. McMurray was able to return the favor by riding Stahl the entire 3rd period and secure the victory.

      Happy First Birthday IndianaMat.com!

It is hard to believe that IndianaMat is one year old today.  It is amazing how the website has grown over the last year and continues to grow each and every day.  Even to this day I am shocked at how fast the site has grown.  The start of the website and its subsequent growth has been tremendous and could not have been done without the help of numerous people.  First and foremost I want to thank a couple people who egged me on to start the website.  Eric McGill and Diana Szymborski both were instrumental in getting the site started. As I was anxious to post my wrestling wisdom(or lack of it) it was apparent that it would have to be done on another website.  They both encouraged me to start a new website, especially after I told them it wouldn’t take too long to start up.  After debating it for about an hour I pulled the trigger and the site was born.

Obviously this board would not have gone far without others that have helped too.  Chad Hollenbaugh has helped as a moderator, writer, idea maker, and voice of reason.  Most of the time when a new idea is presented it was his idea first.  While Chad and I have been friends for quite a while, I even reached to a former arch nemesis for help with the website.  Dingo Brigade aka Cameron Drury and I have had many heated debates before, but I knew that he was a great writer and someone that was also very passionate about the sport.  He has helped write numerous articles that are well thought-out and very interesting.

Reaching out to an online nemesis is one thing, but a coaching nemesis is another.  Corey Sparks has helped from day one with the logos for the website.  He has helped tremendously in making the website look extremely professional with his hand crafted logos.  He always very fast with something and has designed the great logos you see all over the site.

One of the things that really set the site apart was the rankings.  This summer W.I.N. magazine’s Rob Sherril told me how great the rankings where on the website at Fargo.  It was very surreal to have a national rankings guru tell me that they visit the website and specifically the rankings.  So a big hearty thanks definitely goes to the rankings guy.  It is amazing that he can put together such accurate rankings when he is living out of state most of the season.  I also want to thank the coaches, fans and parents that send him the pertinent information about who beat who and all that good stuff.  The rankings are only as good as the information provided and it was top notch last year and will continue that way.

Along with the individual rankings come a very good set of team rankings.  Team rankings are even tougher since many of the top teams do not see each other during the season and with weight shifts it’s hard to truly tell who is a better team.  Decbell aka Dane Fueling has done a wonderful job with them and they will only continue to get better.

I would also like to thank the moderators for doing their jobs.  Wrestling fans are some of the most hard headed people I know and with many differences in opinions, the moderators have kept the conversations mostly civil.  Thanks to them for doing their jobs and letting me work on things on the backend of the site.

Two weekly awards we do are the wrestlers of the week for both high school and youth.  This was one of the first articles we started and it is great to see that it has taken off like it has.  This is a great way to give recognition to the wrestlers every week.  I want to thank Wendell Chitwood for doing the work on the high school portion and Keith Wilson for doing his work on the youth portion.

This site was started with money out of my own pocket.  It has grown to where now it is pretty much self sufficient.  Without help from the sponsors this would not have happened.  If you see one of the many people that have advertised on this site, please say thank you and patronize their businesses and camps.  Without great people like them, this state would not be near where it is today in the sport of wrestling.

Lastly, I want to thank all of the wrestling fans in Indiana that patronize this website.  Without you, this site would not exist.  This site was made for you and will continue to be something that promotes all portions of wrestling in Indiana.  Indiana wrestling fans are great people and very passionate about the sport.  Please keep the ideas coming on what you would like to see on this website as we will try to give the fans the best and most extensive coverage of wrestling in Indiana all year long.  I would also like to thank everyone that bought a t-shirt or donated money.  Your generosity is greatly appreciated and with those funds this website will keep running for years to come.

Sorry, I have one last person to thank. That is my wife.  She has been there from the beginning and been very supportive of this endeavor.  She put up with many late nights, trips to wrestling meets and even me kind of ignoring here when I was working on the site.  She has been on numerous trips, such as going to interview the wrestlers at Calumet College and to state. Believe it or not I have never heard a complaint from her.  Thanks from not only myself, but the Indiana wrestling community.  If you see her at a meet, be sure to thank her for all she has done behind the scenes.
