NFHS high school rule changes: Appropriate dress for weighins addressed
By Bruce Howard NFHS 04/23/2010
Appropriate Dress for Weigh-ins Addressed in High School Wrestling
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 23, 2010) – A revision in the appropriate dress for weigh-ins in high school wrestling was among four rules changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee at its April 5-7 meeting in Indianapolis. The changes, which were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors, will take effect with the 2010-11 season.
“The committee felt the need to make very few changes because the sport of high school wrestling is in good shape,†said Dale Pleimann, former assistant executive director of the Missouri State High School Activities Association and chair of the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee. “Two of the changes deal with minimizing risk, one deals with privacy issues and the other change was clean-up in a mechanics procedure instituted last year.â€
Regarding weigh-ins, previously both male and female contestants had to weigh in wearing “no more than a suitable undergarment.†Beginning next year, specific language has been added regarding what constitutes a “suitable undergarment.†Male and female contestants will be required to wear a suitable undergarment that completely covers the buttocks and the groin area. In addition, for female contestants the suitable undergarment must also cover the breasts.
Bob Colgate, assistant director of the NFHS and committee liaison, said the change was made to consider privacy issues for all individuals involved with weigh-ins.
The committee also addressed the process for an offensive wrestler assuming a legal starting position. The following statement has been added to Rule 5-20-9:
“Once the offensive wrestler has assumed a legal starting position and is stationary, the referee shall verbally say ‘set’ and then pause momentarily before starting wrestling.â€
“This rule change will eliminate either wrestler gaining an advantage by using a rolling start,†Colgate said. “It also eliminates the need for the offensive wrestler using a specific sequence when assuming a legal starting position, including the optional offensive starting position.â€
Effective with the 2010-11 high school wrestling season, any contestant who shows signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion shall be removed immediately from the match and shall not return to competition until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.
The previous rule directed officials to remove an athlete from competition if “apparently unconscious.†The previous rule also allowed for return to competition based on written authorization by a medical doctor.
“Given that the vast majority of concussions do not include a loss of consciousness, but that athletes often show obvious evidence of concussion, the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) strongly believes that referees must continue to be empowered to remove these athletes from competition, thus protecting them from further injury,†said Dr. Michael Koester, chair of the SMAC. “Continued participation in any sport following a concussion can lead to worsening concussion symptoms, as well as increased risk for further injury to the brain and even death.
“The safety of the athlete is of paramount concern during any athletic contest. Referees, coaches and administrators are being asked to make all efforts at ensuring that concussed athletes do not continue to participate. Thus, coaches, wrestlers and administrators should also be looking for signs of concussion in all wrestlers and should immediately remove any suspected concussed wrestler from competition.â€
In addition to wrestling, the new concussion language is being placed in all NFHS rules books for the 2010-11 season, as well as the “NFHS Suggested Guidelines for Management of Concussion.â€
The Wrestling Rules Committee also added the “rear-standing, double-knee kickback†to the list of illegal maneuvers. Colgate said this maneuver, which is being used more frequently at the high school level, clearly puts the opposing wrestler in a dangerous situation and at a high risk for injury.
Perhaps as significant as the changes approved by the committee was one that was not. After much discussion, the committee voted against changing the wrestling weight classes and will stay with the 14 weight classes currently in place in the NFHS Wrestling Rules Book. Three proposals were considered by the committee this year on changing the wrestling weight classes.
“The response from member state associations was divided equally between Option B and making no change,†Pleimann said. “The committee, with no clear choice from the membership, did not believe it was appropriate to make a change in the weight classes just for the sake of change. However, the committee did request the NFHS to conduct another survey on wrestling weight classes during the 2010-11 season.â€
Three “Points of Emphasis†were issued by the committee for the 2010-11 high school wrestling season: Concussion Recognition and Management, Communicable Disease and Fleeing the Mat.

563Wabash College Announces 2010 Recruiting Class
From Wabash Athletics
Wabash College head coach Brian Anderson has announced the addition of nineteen student-athletes who will join the Little Giants wrestling program in the fall. The nineteen wrestlers come from seven different states with the majority coming from Indiana. This class of freshmen coming in will provide depth from top to bottom. 7 out of the 19 wrestlers competed at their state tournament at least once, with another 9 of them falling in the state qualifying tournament. On top of the athletic accomplishments of these individuals, this class comes in with an average grade point average of 3.41.
Wabash started seven underclassmen this past season with four of those being freshman. The 2009-2010 team finished 11-4 in duals and had two individuals at the national tournament. This incoming class will make a strong impact on the program over the next four years that will take Wabash to new heights. The youth of this team will be able to look to a number of different upper classmen who are getting it done in the classroom and on the mats.

Wrestlers to Watch
Mitch Sliga will be wrestling both style and attempting to become Indiana's first Cadet Triple Crown winner. Sliga already has Triple Crown titles as a Novice in 2007 and as a Midget in 2005. Earlier this spring he won the USAW Folkstyle Nationals with only one match going three periods. During the IHSAA season Sliga placed third in the state as a freshman. The past two seasons Sliga has not lost at the prestigious Schoolboy Duals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.
Neal Molloy is also coming off of a USAW Folkstyle Nationals title and will be participating in freestyle only. During the IHSAA season Molloy qualified for state at 119lbs.
State runner-up Paul Petrov will look to make an impact on the national scene wrestling at 112lbs.
State champion Kyle Ayersman will also be wrestling at 112lbs for Team Indiana. Ayersman has had national success before, winning three matches at Fargo last year and has placed three times at Folkstyle Nationals.
Other wrestlers that highlight the Cadet roster are a pair of Cathedral wrestlers Brian Harvey(6th at 112lbs wrestling 130lbs) and Austin Neibarger(8th at 152lbs wrestling 160lbs).

Wrestlers to Watch
Brendan Campbell will be moving up to the Junior division after placing 8th as a Cadet last year. Already this summer he went 6-2 at the Junior Duals in freestyle.  Campbell finished 3rd during the IHSAA season.
Brandon Nelsen(notice the correct spelling Coach Weimer) is making a return trip to Fargo where he placed 4th two years ago. This season Nelsen won a state championship and is looking to close out his prep career wrestling on the stage in the Fargodome.
The pride of Wolcottville, Travis Barroquillo, will be making his second trip to Fargo. He is a two time state qualifier, placing 7th this season. He also finished 5th at USAW Folkstyle Nationals this spring.
Jason Tsirtsis’ resume keeps getting longer and longer each week. Already a two-time state champion, he also has two FILA Cadet freestyle titles. The one title that has so far eluded him though, is a prestigious Fargo title. In 2008 he placed 4th and last season he lost in the finals. He placed 4th at FILA Juniors this spring beating a couple current college wrestlers along the way.
Kirk Johson, Cameryn Brady and Conner Mullins will all look to make an impact on the national scene after having great IHSAA seasons.
Sean Mappes placed 7th last year in Greco-Roman and will look to duplicate that feat this year. Mappes had a great showing at the Central Regionals, only losing to Iowa stud Justin Koethe. Mappes also was one match from placing in both styles at FILA Cadet Nationals.
Caleb Smith will be taking his skills to the mat in Greco once again. He was one match from placing last year and is coming off a silver medal in the Pan Am Junior Games just last week.
Another Princeton wrestler, state champion Drake Stein, will be heading to Fargo for the third straight year. Stein placed 8th two years ago in Greco as a Cadet and is coming off a great IHSAA season. Stein went 5-1 at the Junior Duals in Greco-Roman.
Mark Collett is another former Greco All-American looking to come back from Fargo with hardware once again.
Everyone’s favorite curly haired twins, Reece and Conner Lefever, will also be gracing the mats in Fargo. Conner placed 8th during the IHSAA season and placed 7th at USAW Folkstyle Nationals, while Reece was a state qualifier during the IHSAA season and one match from placing at USAW Folkstyle Nationals.
432Sliga in the Finals!
Mitch Sliga of Fishers has advanced to the finals of the Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota. Good luck to Mitch as he looks to capture the second leg of the triple crown. Sliga was 6-0 today with three pins and two decisions. His opponent in the finals will be Jesse Doyle of North Carolina. Doyle was a state qualifier as a freshman in 2009 and placed third this past season at 189lbs.
Sliga is attempting to become the first Cadet Greco-Roman champion for Indiana since Daniel Bedoy captured the championship in 2000.

[caption id=attachment_2060" align="aligncenter" width="244" caption="Mitch Sliga(left) and Coach Jake Herrald after winning the 2010 Cadet Greco-Roman National Title][/caption]
Mitch Sliga of Fishers defeated Jesse Doyle of North Carolina in the finals of the Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals. He lost the first period 2-0 after Doyle countered an attempted gut wrench by Sliga. Sliga won the second period 1-0 on a push-out and won the third period 3-0 with a successful gut wrench and push-out. Sliga now has captured two of the three legs of the prestigious USAW Triple Crown.
477Drake Stein into the Finals!
Princeton's Drake Stein utilized a clutch pin to advance to the finals of the Junior Greco-Roman National Championships. Stein lost earlier to Marcus Finau of Hawaii in the round robin, but the other round robin participant, Khari Washington of Illinois defeated Finau. Needing a pin or tech or decision without allowing a point to advance to the finals Stein stuck Washington in 1:12. Stein will face California's Lucas Sheridan in the finals that will start at 3pm Central/4pm Eastern time. Stein is the only junior wrestler to place in Greco-Roman this year.
You will be able to view the finals at USAW's UStream channel by clicking here.

323Junior Women's Freestyle Preview
Last, but not least, Indiana will be sending three girls to participate in the USAW Women's Junior Freestyle tournament that will run Friday July 23rd with the finals on Saturday July 24th. Here is a brief rundown of the participants from Indiana.
Making her first trip to Fargo is Kayla Miracle from Bloomington North High School. While this is her first trip to Fargo, Miracle is no stranger to success against girls and boys. Just this season alone she placed second in the Schoolboy/girl division in freestyle and third in folkstyle. She also participated in the Schoolboy/girl Duals going 4-3 in freestyle. She also won the Middle School State championship at 84lbs. She will be participating at 95lbs for the tournament.
Another wrestler that is no stranger to beating up on the boys is Penn's Sarah Hildebrandt. During the IHSAA season she became the first female to qualify for semi-state and was an overtime takedown from making it to the ticket-round. Last year in Fargo Hildebrandt finished fourth at 109lbs and will return to that weight class. This spring and summer against other girls she won FILA Cadets, while placing second in FILA Juniors. She also got second in the USAW Girl's Folkstyle Nationals.
Demi Strub of East Central rounds out the trio of girl's wrestlers participating in Fargo. Like Hildebrandt, she is a returning All-American, placing sixth last year. This spring and summer she placed third at the FILA Cadets and placed fifth at the USAW Girl's Folkstyle Nationals.
