Spartans turn in strong results at Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, PA. – A pair of top eight placings from sophomore 174-pounder Dylan Lauffer (Fairfield, Ohio) and freshman 184-pounder Alex Roberts (Winslow, Ind.) guided Manchester University Saturday, Nov. 8.

Lauffer worked his way into the championship quarterfinals before Waynesburg College's Abu Kaba stopped him 4-1. He rallied with a major decision victory in the consolation quarterfinals before being sent into the 5th-place battle where the sophomore claimed fifth.

Roberts produced three decisions on his way into the top eight. He narrowly missed joining Lauffer in the top six with a hard-fought 5-1 loss in the consolation quarterfinals.

Freshman 149-pounder Eric Dan (Knox, Ind.) and freshman heavyweight Nick Joyner (Bedford, Ind.) also compiled multiple-win days with 2-2 records. MU's top squad finished their day at the Washington and Jefferson Open with 34 points which put them in the top 15.

The Spartans continue open competition Saturday, Nov. 15, at Trine University.

      2019 East Chicago Semi-State Preview

      By Chad Hollenbaugh
The annual region rumble will again invade the mammoth East Chicago Central gymnasium this Saturday morning.   And after an exclusive 12 month tour of Europe, Scandinavia and the Subcontinent, Karl Hungus has returned to both fix the cable and regale the region rats and rat wannabes with his potent predictions.

      TEAM RACE
Three Duneland Conference powers look to battle it out for the Semi-State title.  Merrillville has used their outstanding depth to win both the conference title as well as sectional and regional crowns.  Rival Portage has been nipping at the heels of the Pirates and their frontline hammers could pull them through to a title this weekend.  Crown Point is not far behind and will definitely be a player this weekend.  Penn and upstart Culver Academies will be looking to break the region stranglehold over this semi state.
      106
The bracket gods did not line up things right as the two prospective top lightweights are on the same side of the bracket in Culver Military’s 2nd ranked Brennen Cernus and Crown Point’s 5th ranked Stephan Roberson.  One of these two studs will be sent to the 3rd/4th match this Saturday.  On the other side of the bracket, Merrillville’s mighty mite Malik Hall appears to have an excellent shot at making it to the finals.  The final spot should come down to Lafayette Central Catholic’s regional champ Alex Skees and Chesterton’s Luke Steno.
      113
The region is usually particularly tough in the lighter weight classes, and the 113 class Is no exception as number 1 ranked Jacob Moran of Portage continues in his quest of a state title.  Moran has not been seriously tested by anyone in state this year.  Look for him to cruise to the title.  4th ranked Gio Diaz of Wheeler is on the other side of the bracket and will most like make a return trip to Banker’s Life.  Mishawaka’s Brodie Fogerty appears to have gotten the sweetest draw in this bracket and Frontier’s Colin Reagan (ranked 10th) or Merrillville’s Martin Cruz (ranked 7th) have the death draw as both these potential podium placers will likely meet up in a ticket round tussle.
      120
This weight class might produce the first real fireworks of the day and some legitimate dog fights for that coveted ticket to Indy.  3rd ranked Riley Battich of Crown Point and 8th ranked Trey Finnearty of Culver Military look to lock up a state birth in their quarter brackets.  The other two groups of 4 should produce some awesome match ups.  Wawasee’s sophomore stud, Jace Alexander was able to slide past rival Vince Sparrow at regional via an injury default.  As a result, he should be able to punch a ticket to state.  The final slot will likely come down to Duneland rivals Ty Haskins of Portage and Danny Tolin of Chesterton.  Tolin has had the slight advantage recently but anything can happen at semi state.
      126
Karl’s favorite guitarist from the 1970s Smokey and Bandit series, Jerry Reed, once sang a song titled When Your Hot Your Hot, When Your Not Your Not.  No this was not a comparison of ontherise219 and Broken Towel Rack, but it does describe the Penn Regional and how those wrestlers will play out at semi state.  Mishawaka’s Brendon Mark got hot at the right time and won a regional title.  That put him in excellent position to make a semi state run to Indy.  Seniors Trevor Penrod from South Bend Riley and Logan Hill of Penn did not have the hot streak and face longer odds. McCutheon’s 16th ranked Evan Burge appears to be lined up to power through his quarter bracket and punch his state ticket.  The class of the bracket is in the bottom half where top ranked frosh Jesse Mendez of Crown Point and veteran stud Brock Peele of Portage will likely battle in the semi finals.
      132
There looks to little drama in this weight class as the champs from the four regionals look to be the favorites to also qualify for state.  Geremia Brooks of Wawasee is ranked fourth in the state and only has one blemish on his record. Undefeated Andres Moreno of Lowell looms on the other side of the bracket with a possible semi state title on the line.  I like Rensselaer Central’s Elijah Hickman and Portage grinder Rickey Hegedus as the other two state streeters in this mix.
      138
This bracket appears to be a little more topsy-turvy than 132 as several potential upsets appear to possible.  This should make for a very interesting weight class. Two great ticket round possibilities might take place in the top half of the bracket as Merrillville’s Anthony Rivera and Mishawaka’s Gabe Weeks will likely square off with a state berth on the line.  A similar prospect might emerge in the second quarter bracket with Chesterton’s Cade Johnson and Harrison’s AJ Poindexter likely to meet in the ticket round.  The bottom half of the bracket seems a little more settled with LaPorte Slicer regional champ Tyler Nicely and longtime Wawasee Warrior Braxton Alexander likely to meet in the semis.  Alexander is the class of this weight class.
      145
A couple of relative upstarts look to control this bracket as 8th ranked Jacob Burford of Crown Point and small school stud Jorden Dougglas of Attica (6th ranked) appear on opposite sides of the bracket.  These two are looking to make a name for themselves on the state level next week.  The fight for the other two state berths will be hotly contested as Merrillville’s Jacob Maldonado should be tested by Wawasee’s Garrett Stuckman and Penn’s Jeffrey Harper will have his hands full with either Lake Central’s Daniel Park or Morton’s Isiah Watts.
      152
Much like the 145 bracket, the 152 set of 16 will feature two state ranked grapplers and a host of others looking to break out onto the state scene.  The big dog in this weight class is eighth ranked Chesterton Trojan Brock Ellis.  He owns a big 17-5 victory over the other state ranked grappler in this class, Cole Cervantes of Griffith.  Both of these region rumblers possess the talent to win on Friday night in Indy.  Regional champs Drew Mason of Mishawaka and Spencer Phillips of McCutcheon appear to peaking at the right time and have the right draw to advance.
      160
Only two state ranked wrestlers are in this bracket as the rest of this semi state seems to be trying to avoid Portage super stud, Donell Washington.  The leader of the Indian squad is a runaway favorite to dominate at East Chicago.  All others will be fighting for runner up status barring a huge upset.  13th ranked Brock Merkel of Harrison will likely have his hands full with Abel Verbeek of Lowell. LaPorte Slicer Matt Neff and Culver Academy’s freshman Braden Welch appear to be peaking at the right time and have good draws to make it to the Circle City.
      170
A deep and talented field of middle weights will entertain wrestling fans in the region this Saturday.  Most non-partisan fans will be hoping for the rubber match between junior class rivals Graham Calhoun of Plymouth (2nd ranked) and 4th ranked Joseph Walker of Mishawaka.  They have split two previous matches this year.  This could be a potential match for all the marbles next week.  Portage wrestles a killer schedule and that should prepare grizzled vet Josh Warmick to make a state run in the bottom half of the bracket.  The last spot will be hard fought with three super sophs battling for the final state slot.  Culver Military’s Eli Pack, Merrillville’s Jason Streck, and Kankakee Valley’s regional champ Aiden Sneed will bet duking it out for that 4th ticket to Indy.
       182
Karl Hungus loves watching the upper weights battle and the 182 weight class is a personal favorite.  East Chicago’s Semi State will not disappoint this year as a host of studs populate bracket.  In the top quarter bracket, regional champ Jack Hargan of Attica will be in a dogfight with the physical Noah Perez of LaPorte. Frosh phenom Andrew Donahue of Culver Military look to have the easiest path to Indy in this bracket.  In the bottom half….Whoa Nelly!  5th ranked Jacob Bates of Chesterton will likely brawl with 2nd ranked Jake LaPlace of Mishawaka with a state berth on the line.  This one will be worth the price of admission. The last spot in this tough, tough class will likely come down to Penn’s Noah Brown and Merrillville’s Khris Walton.  A match that might play a role in the team race.
      195
Wow!  Another absolutely loaded class with athletic brawlers. Four state ranked studs will be in the fight of their lives with other lesser known studs trying to punch that elusive ticket to Banker’s Life.  Each quarter bracket features matches that will be so tough to call.  One loss Jacob Trefan of Culver Military will likely battle 2nd ranked Ewan Donavan for the golden ticket.  Seniors Braden Oakley of Harrison and Rockne Hurley of Penn will duke it out for the second slot.  The third quarter bracket is a best.  Any of the four grapplers could take that ticket to state.  Sophomore Bobby Babcock is Hungus’ pick to click.  Triton’s James “Bo” Snyder avenged his sectional loss and will be in a slobber knocker with veteran Crown Point Bulldog Ethan Potosky.  Wow!
       220
These upper weight classes at East Chicago are absolute meat grinders and so difficult to predict.  Merrillville’s Drew Bailey came up big at regional and defeated neighborhood rival Art Fowler.   This put the 10th ranked Bailey in a great position to qualify for state this weekend.  The 2nd ranked Fowler dropped to the last quarter bracket where he will have to contend with the sensational John Thomas of South Bend Adams.  Two of the best big man athletes in the state will be on display in this ticket round tilt.  Joey Kidwell of West Lafayette has a sparkling 40-1 record but must contend with Caveman Garrett Sandefur for that elusive state slot.
       285
Wrapping up the East Chicago Semi state with the Big Boys.  It appears that three of the four quarter brackets should go the way of chalk and the final slot will be a great ticket round match.  Massive Alex Cartwright of LaVille is 5th ranked and coming off his best win of the year defeating 2nd ranked Yehezequal DeVault of Penn in the regional finals.  Cartwright has been a stud for 3 years and has just had a some bad luck at semi state.  He can contend for a state title. DeVault is on the other side of the bracket but will have no cakewalk in his ticket round as he will likely face regional champ Nick Garcia of Lake Central.  Will Crider of Harrison and Anthony Atria of Merrillville will look to continue the tradition of fine heavyweight wrestlers at their respective schools.

Bulldog Breakdown: IHSWCA Dual State on Deck for Tough Bulldog Squad

      By Anna Kayser

After a month of individual focus for the Brownsburg wrestling team with the Walsh Ironman, Carnahan and Brecksville-Broadview Heights Invitationals alongside few one-on-one duals in December, the team focus returns on Saturday as the Bulldogs look for their first IHSWCA Dual State championship since 2019.

“This weekend isn’t the official IHSAA state champions, but to me whatever team wins dual state any year, that’s the best team,” head coach Darrick Snyder said. “I love it when you go into it and the best kid on your team is just as important as the least talented kid on your team.”

Over the past month, the Bulldogs have taken strides from top to bottom in individual performance to prepare them for the switch to a team mentality and having a strong lineup through all weight classes.

At the Ironman Invitational from Dec. 9-10, Revin Dickman (106) and Leighton Jones (HWT) each earned a spot on the podium to in one of the toughest high school tournaments in the country, leading the Bulldogs to place 20th out of 119 teams. One week later, they finished in third place of the Carnahan Invitational at Crown Point with Gunnar Henry (195) winning his bracket and three others reaching the finals.

To round out December, seven Bulldogs took to the podium on another tough stage, with Brady Ison (132) being crowned as a champion of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Invitational and Dickman and Jones following in second place of their respective weight classes.

And in the middle of the gauntlet of tough, nationally ranked competition have been practices mapped around these wrestlers peaking at the right time and keeping their bodies fresh for a run at the postseason. Dual meets have gone by the wayside, with Brownsburg’s last dual coming exactly one month ago on Dec. 6 vs. Avon.

“Our schedule is so much different with being able to go to Ironman and Brecksville… we’re just doing a lot of individual tournaments,” Snyder said. “Which, I think if we’re trying to get our guys national exposure and knock off some nationally ranked guys, that’s probably the best route.”

That improvement during the season – and even the strides they make in the summer and in the school months leading up to wrestling season – ultimately strengthens the program to a point where they are in the running for state titles in any arena.

Now that they’ve faced some of the toughest competition in the country, both the mental and physical aspects of wrestling have been strengthened to set up Brownsburg for a run this weekend and in February.

“I always tell the guys to get as good as you can and keep improving, and that helps the team,” Snyder said. “Whether it’s in a dual meet or it’s at individual state, if you get to a point where you can compete for [an individual] state title in Indiana, you’re going to help us win an Indiana [team] state title and you’re certainly going to help us in a dual meet. We just focus on them continuing to improve.”

The team mentality comes into play when looking at the scoreboard and the overall team race in an event like this weekend, and that’s the biggest difference between wrestling for an individual title and taking the mat in a dual meet.

There’s also the ability to pick each other up following individual losses, scoring bonus points to offset opponents’ points on the scoreboard.

“I think our guys are very unselfish and that’s something I think we’ve kind of created within our culture,” Snyder said. “Our guys know that if they’re the clear-cut better wrestler, they can’t go out and win 5-4, they’ve got to score bonus points. They don’t always do it, but that’s their goal. And our guys that are kind of getting beat up on and falling behind, they know they have to fight off their back and survive because it’s all about the team.

“There are some rounds where my best kids walk out and I’m like ‘Get me bonus’ and they’re like, ‘Got you, coach.’”

The 4A bracket of the IHSWCA State Duals tournament will take place on Brownsburg’s home turf as they look to battle through a bracket of strong competition.

As the No. 2 seed, the Bulldogs open with No. 7 Indianapolis Cathedral and will have to get through either No. 3 Center Grove – a tough opponent to battle in half of the bracket – or No. 6 Evansville Mater Dei. On the other side of the bracket awaits No. 1 Crown Point, which won the tournament in 2022.

“I’m excited to compete as a team with everybody right there,” Snyder said. “I know our guys are too, we’ve had a great week of practice. We don’t need to say anything, do anything – we talk about winning dual state and IHSAA state, and they were locked in on Monday. They’re ready to roll.”

      New Castle Semistate 2010

"Veni, vidi, vici (I came, I saw, I conquered)."
"I love the name of honor, more than I fear death."

      --Gaius Julius Caesar

With the Ides of March approaching, I thought it appropriate to use some quotes by the quote machine Julius Caesar. Caesar, as history tells us, was willing to sacrifice nearly everything to achieve his goals....sounds like a wrestler to me. Anyway, my second favorite sporting weekend of the year is this coming weekend. I look forward to the trip to New Castle each year, knowing it means arriving at the crack of dawn and leaving when it's dark. This year it's especially true, as I won't be able to make it to Conseco. It's also especially true because this has been such a crazy year for Indiana wrestling. New Castle and the other three semistates, really show off what's great about our sport. The very high quality of competition, the elation of the matches' winners, the supreme disappointment of the matches' losers, the unbridled emotions of the parents, the upsets, the OT matches...how can you not love it all?

      103

Outlook: Although this is an extraordinarily deep field, featuring seven wrestlers ranked in the top-16 (would've had 8 in the top-19 if Bova had made it through), this is Pocket Hercules' (Cody Phillips) weight class to lose. Although Venezia, Farrell, Moss, Schmith, Brasier and others are formidable opponents, Phillips is simply humongous and outrageously strong for 103. Past Phillips, it's a toss-up for places 2-4. Venezia has a good shot at reaching the finals, although to do so, he will have to beat three top-16 ranked wrestlers. Easily one of the toughest draws of anyone at New Castle. Moss has the misfortune of potentially drawing Phillips in the semis. Brasier vs. Farrell is one of the elite ticket matches at New Castle. Schmith vs. Venezia is one of the elite opening round matches at New Castle. Should be a very exciting, unpredictable weight past Phillips.

      Ranked:

#16 Clint Schmith, Beech Grove, 30-8
      #7 Mike Venezia, Cathedral, 31-2
#1 Cody Phillips (defending state champion at 103), Union County, 37-0
#13 Garrett Brasier, East Central, 40-4
#10 Josh Farrell, Greenfield Central, 42-3
#6 Levi Moss, Ben Davis, 37-2
      #11 Tom Gettinger, Connersville, 39-4

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #1 Cody Phillips
      2. #7 Mike Venezia
      3. #6 Levi Moss
      4. #13 Garrett Brasier

      All hail the champ:

      Cody Phillips

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

#16 Schmith vs. #7 Venezia (opening round)--Schmith is a talented kid coming off of a disappointing weekend and it's within the realm of possibility that he can pull the upset. However, to Venezia's credit, he's been awfully steady this season against some pretty formidable competition.
#11 Gettinger vs. #7 Venezia (ticket round)--These two met up at Connersville earlier this season, with the Cathedral wrestler winning comfortably 7-0.
#13 Brasier vs. #10 Farrell (ticket round)--Farrell has shown he can beat just about anyone at this weight, as evidenced by his impressive regional performance. Brasier is a senior and I'll go with him because....well, because he's a senior. Farrell could make this pick look downright foolish.

      112

Outlook: This is another stacked field, featuring three returning state qualifiers. With this impressive depth, including five wrestlers ranked in the top-10, comes a decent amount of uncertainty at the top. I would personally favor New Castle's stud soph Brendan Campbell, but Mason Todd couldn't have been more impressive last weekend, as he comfortably handled Price and especially his arch-nemesis Harvey. Campbell, Harvey, Todd, Price and McKinley are all capable of winning this weight class, and with the numbers game, at least one of these fine wrestlers will not advance. Parham vs. Harvey, Price vs. McKinley and Davis/Ling vs. Todd are all potentially exciting ticket matches.

      Ranked:

#5 Jared McKinley, 42-1, Perry Meridian
#7 Brendan Campbell, 48-1, New Castle
      #8 Dominique Price, 31-4, Tech
      #9 Brian Harvey, 34-4, Cathedral
#10 Mason Todd, 40-1, Pendleton Heights

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #7 Brendan Campbell
      2. #5 Jared McKinley
      3. #10 Mason Todd
      4. #9 Brian Harvey

      All hail the champ:

      Brendan Campbell

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Patrick Parham, Carmel, 26-7 vs. #9 Harvey (ticket round)--Parham has been on fire in the postseason, but Harvey is rock-solid and doesn't take a match off. Parham has shown the ability to rise to the occasion in the past and he'll have to do it here to advance.
#8 Price vs. #5 McKinley (ticket round)--These two met earlier this year, with McKinley taking a 5-0 decision. Price hasn't been able to get over the hump thus far, but the ability is there and he's faced a lot of good wrestlers in his career.
Robert Boston, Lawrence North, 25-5 vs. #7 Campbell (opening round)--Boston is a very tough kid, but he has a tall task ahead of him in the form of the Cadet Freestyle All-American Campbell.
Conrad Ling, Fishers, 32-5 vs. Aaron Davis, Roncalli, 24-11 (opening round)--Ling has had an outstanding year and Davis is coming on strong late in the season, like he did last year.
#10 Todd vs. #9 Harvey (potential finals match)--It will be difficult for these two to face each other again, but it would be great if it happens. These two wrestle like they hate each other. Pendleton Heights and Cathedral fans might even be more into it than their wrestlers. The PA announcer at Pendleton Heights had to admonish the crowd in their last meeting because things were getting so heated. Great stuff.

      119

Outlook: This is a very top-heavy weight class, featuring #1 Brandon Nelsen and #2 Josh Kieffer, as well as #13 Seve Duncan and #19 Josh Julian. All four are returning state qualifiers and all but Duncan are returning state placers. Nelsen and Kieffer have been head and shoulders above everyone else in this semi-state and should meet in the finals here. Each has only one loss this year--Nelsen to Kieffer and Kieffer to Nelsen. Will Nelsen's experience and technical savvy beat Kieffer's length and physical style?

      Ranked:

#1 Brandon Nelsen, Lawrence North, 36-1
      #2 Josh Kieffer, Roncalli, 35-1
#13 Seve Duncan, Beech Grove, 18-7
      #19 Josh Julian, Lebanon, 31-7

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #1 Brandon Nelsen
      2. #2 Josh Kieffer
      3. Alex Catron, New Castle, 40-2
      4. Thomas Ash, Hamilton Southeastern, 24-7

      All hail the champ:

      Brandon Nelsen

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Catron vs. #19 Julian (ticket round)--For some reason, Julian hasn't been quite as sharp as this time last year. He's still capable of getting hot and putting together another run to Conseco. Catron has been very close to breaking through; last year, it was Seve Duncan that de-railed his state aspirations.
Levi Lanning, Alexandria, 34-8 vs. #19 Julian (opening round)--Let me tell you, these Alexandria kids can wrestle. Although Julian will be rightfully favored, Lanning is very solid and could be a darkhorse contender to advance.
#1 Nelsen vs. #13 Duncan (ticket round)--Some people suspected that Duncan tanked at sectionals to improve his draw. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but he's in a tough spot here. Unfortunately for the tough Beech Grove wrestler, there are a few things in life you can count on: water is wet, the sky is blue and Brandon Nelsen will place at state.
Thien Tran, New Palestine, 33-9 vs. Ash (ticket round)--It's very possible that one of these two kids will be wrestling at Conseco. Both are seniors with comparable records and competition faced; I'll go with Ash due to his recent hot streak, but I won't be shocked if it's Tran.
#1 Nelsen vs. #2 Kieffer (potential finals match)--They've wrestled many times, but there isn't a clear-cut favorite between the two. It's a great battle of conflicting builds and styles.

      125

Outlook: Like 119, this weight class is top-heavy, featuring #1 Brandon Wright and #2 Justin Kieffer. Like 103, it's also extraordinarily deep, featuring seven ranked wrestlers. In my opinion, this is the strongest weight class at New Castle, top to bottom. Almost every match from the opening round forward is a possible barn-burner. While it's likely that Wright and Kieffer will battle for the kazillionth time for the title, spots 3 and 4 will be very interesting. For those last two spots, you have Ben Sommer, Shelbyville sectional #1 seed Jake Williams, Jordan Johnson, Jared Huff, Josh Blanton, Jason Simmons and Brent Roman battling it out. Throw in Justin Eshelman, Charlie McGinley and Dalton Millikan and you have yourself one loaded weight class.

      Ranked:

#1 Brandon Wright, Warren Central, 25-2
      #2 Justin Kieffer, Roncalli, 31-3
#13 Jordan Johnson, Lawrence North, 26-12
      #14 Ben Sommer, Carmel, 33-3
#15 Jason Simmons, Perry Meridian, 35-9
      #16 Jared Huff, Milan, 38-4
      #18 Charlie McGinley, Tech, 34-6

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #1 Brandon Wright
      2. #2 Justin Kieffer
      3. #14 Ben Sommer
      4. #16 Jared Huff

      All hail the champ:

      Brandon Wright

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

#14 Sommer vs. #13 Johnson (ticket round)--They met earlier this year, with Johnson winning an OT decision. If Sommer can get by Williams, I like his chances here against the lanky Johnson.
Dalton Millikan, South Vermillion, 37-3 vs. #2 Kieffer (opening round)--Millikan had a rough regional, which helped bring about such a rough draw. Kieffer is likely just too much here but Millikan is a solid kid.
Brent Roman, Hamilton Southeastern, 31-7 vs. #15 Simmons (opening round)--Rough matchup for both kids. Roman won't be intimidated by the Perry wrestler. A pick 'em in my eyes.
#16 Huff vs. #15 Simmons/Roman (ticket round)--In another year, all three of these high caliber wrestlers might be advancing. In this stacked semi-state weight class, only one of the three will move on. All three are seniors and any of the three could move on.
Justin Eshelman, Pendleton Heights, 37-4 vs. #1 Wright (ticket round)--This was a really bad break for Eshelman, who might be the third best in the weight class. He dominated the field last Saturday, beating McGinley and Johnson with relative ease. Unfortunately, Wright, the three time state finalist, is probably a little too much for the Arabians wrestler.
#1 Wright vs. #2 Kieffer (potential finals match)--Like Nelsen vs. Kieffer, we've seen this matchup a time or two before. Also like Nelsen vs. Kieffer, it happens to be a great matchup and a fascinating confrontation of styles. Anything is possible in this match.

      130

Outlook: The talent level goes down a little bit when we get to 130. It's still a fine field, featuring two top-five wrestlers, three top-ten kids and four total wrestlers in the top thirteen in the state. Leading the charge is the dynamic Connor Mullins, who should nab the top seed. After Mullins, the very experienced Tyler Clark, a two-time state qualifier, should be a solid pick for second. The third and fourth spots are very wide open and I expect some surprises here.

      Ranked:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

#2 Connor Mullins, New Castle, 51-0
#5 Tyler Clark, South Dearborn, 36-2
      #10 John Stringfield, Cathedral, 34-4
#13 Jacob McCarthy, Mount Vernon, 33-4

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      1. #2 Connor Mullins
      2. #5 Tyler Clark
      3. Greg Bell, Lawrence North, 27-8
      4. #10 John Stringfield

      All hail the champ:

      Connor Mullins

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Eli Walker, Alexandria, 39-5 vs. #13 McCarthy (opening round)--The tough freshman looks to bag some big game in the form of senior and former state qualifier McCarthy. Like the rest of his team, expect to see more and more of this talented youngster in the coming years. McCarthy might be a little too much for him at this point.
Tyler Gadient, Noblesville, 26-10 vs. #2 Mullins (ticket round)--Gadient's record is deceptive, because he's very good. He very nearly beat Stringfield this past weekend and could give Mullins a good test. Expect Mullins to pass the test.
Jordan East, Southport, 37-7 vs. #10 Stringfield (opening round)--East has a solid shot to advance here, but he'll need to beat the ever-consistent Stringfield to do so. Stringfield doesn't give anything up easily, but East is on the same level.
Eli Moore, Fountain Central, 37-2 vs East/#10 Stringfield (ticket round)--Say what you want about the different schedules these three wrestlers competed against, but 37-2 is still 37-2. Moore has a legit shot.

      135

Outlook: This is a pretty evenly matched weight class, with the exception of the clear favorite, #2 Mason "The Butcher" Berryman. The returning 4th place finisher last year at state, Berryman is a legit state title threat. Berryman's heavy hands and physical style will be very tough for anyone here to handle. He should cruise to a title. Beyond Berryman, there are two other ranked wrestlers and a lot of next-tier kids. This is one of the more wide-open weights past Berryman, making it one of the most difficult to handicap.

      Ranked:

#2 Mason Berryman, Anderson Highland, 29-0
#14 Matt Rattay, Lawrence North, 27-9
      #16 Wayne Black, Pike, 35-2

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #2 Mason Berryman
      2. #16 Wayne Black
      3. #14 Matt Rattay
      4. Josh Williams, Warren Central, 32-8

      All hail the champ:

      Mason Berryman

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Brandon Davis, Western Boone, 32-4 vs. Williams (ticket round)--This is senior versus senior, each sporting a pretty impressive win/loss record. Williams' schedule is the difference for me.
John Blanton, Alexandria, 36-6 vs. #16 Black (ticket round)--Blanton is just a sophomore, but he's a talented youngster and it's not a reach at all to say that he could advance. Blanton first has to get by senior Austin Shell, North Vermillion, 33-4.
Levi Rose, New Castle, 44-5 vs. #14 Rattay (ticket round)--Both are battle-tested and Rose has the advantage (pressure?) of wrestling on his home mat. Rattay tends to keep matches pretty close, whether winning or losing, so this one might be up for grabs until the very end of the match.

      140

Outlook: This is a very solid weight class, although it is lacking the big guns of all the previous weight classes. There are six ranked wrestlers here, with #10 Grant Scurria leading the list. Scurria's portion of the bracket is pretty nightmarish, as his first match is versus a former state qualifier and his ticket match could be a rough one as well. There is no clear-cut favorite to speak of, and surprises are almost a certainty. Looking at the bracket, more so than any other weight at New Castle, every match is compelling and almost every kid is capable of advancing. You won't find your state champion here, but any of the four seeds from here will be capable of winning Friday night at Conseco.

      Ranked:

      #10 Grant Scurria, Carmel, 28-3
      #12 Brady White, Westfield, 42-4
#13 Cody Fellers, New Castle, 47-4
#18 Kirk Johnson, Perry Meridian, 40-3
#19 Bailey Kesterman, Triton Central, 38-5
#20 Tiandre Edwards, North Central, 30-7

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #13 Cody Fellers
      2. #10 Grant Scurria
      3. #18 Kirk Johnson
      4. #20 Tiandre Edwards

      All hail the champ:

      #13 Cody Fellers

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Braydon Alley, Hamilton Heights, 26-10 vs. #18 Johnson (ticket round)--Assuming Alley can get by a tough senior in Justin Enright (Centerville, 37-9), this should be a great matchup. Alley was very nearly the regional champion and had to beat two tough wrestlers to advance to the championship. Johnson has almost literally wrestled everyone in the state at 140 and had a great offseason as well. Johnson by a nose.
JR Corman, New Palestine, 19-9 vs. #10 Scurria (opening round)--The former state qualifier Corman is always capable of a big match and has been in this position before. Scurria has had an outstanding year and should be able to hold off the senior.
Mason Gesell, Union County, 39-4 vs. Haydon Buck, Tri-Central, 32-3 (opening round)--Both kids are sporting glittering records. Gesell very nearly knocked off Fellers last week. Buck wasn't as sharp, but he's talented. Gesell should win and face Scurria.
Matt Irick, Hamilton Southeastern, 33-6 vs. Kameron James, Pike, 28-7 (opening round)--I have no clue who will win this one. Both survived tough regionals and either could win this match and the next to advance to the state finals. The winner will likely get the explosive #20 Edwards.
#12 White vs. #19 Kesterman (opening round)--An awful opening round matchup for both kids, but a great one for the crowd. Like most of the matchups at this weight, it's anybody's guess who will win. The winner will likely get #13 Fellers in another potentially great bout.

      145

Outlook: This weight class features two undefeated, very impressive wrestlers in Patrick Robinson and Montrail Johnson. It has three ranked wrestlers because Johnson is unranked, likely due to lack of information about him. The kid is a stud and he definitely passes the look test. It's sometimes difficult to gauge how good someone is unless they're facing excellent competition, but Johnson absolutely owned Pendleton Heights: two pins and a tech, each more impressive than the last. Robinson, the Purdue recruit, has been dominant all year and has faced better competition than Johnson. They are on the same side of the bracket, so someone else will finish second. As with a number of other weights, surprises won't be surprising.

      Ranked:

#6 Patrick Robinson, Hamilton Southeastern, 25-0
#10 Kyle Riedling, New Palestine, 22-9
#17 Derek Harz, Perry Meridian, 31-10

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #6 Patrick Robinson
      2. #17 Derek Harz
      3. Montrail Johnson, Tri-Central, 42-0
      4. #10 Kyle Riedling

      All hail the champ:

      #6 Patrick Robinson

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Ross Hoggatt, South Vermillion, 37-3 vs. #17 Harz (ticket round)--Assuming Hoggatt can get by talented sophomore Clint Nicholson (Pendleton Heights, 23-12), he has a shot at Harz. Like all Perry wrestlers, Harz is a grizzled veteran and used to the big stage and that might be the difference.
Kiefer Uphaus, Centerville, 32-4 vs. #10 Riedling (opening round)--Uphaus has a great shot to advance by beating Riedling. The New Pal wrestler had a rough weekend at Perry Meridian, but it will all be a distant memory if he can come up big in this match. 50-50 matchup.
Zach Heald, Greenfield Central, 28-5 vs. #6 Robinson (ticket round)--Robinson should win this, but Heald is a threat.
Jordan Maple, Connersville, 34-7 vs. Tre Spencer, Pike, 29-8 (opening round)--Both are talented kids with excellent records against tough competition. Should be a good one. The winner gets Johnson in another good one.

      152

Outlook: Despite almost stumbling last weekend against Austin Neibarger, Sam Bennett comes in as a strong favorite. Bennett has already had a sterling career and will continue his career at Northern Illinois next year. This weight class would've been even more exciting if not for the loss of Jacob Tonte. Even without Tonte and New Castle's #18 Dusty Bennett, there are four ranked wrestlers here and twice that many kids capable of advancing. Bennett should sew up a top seed for Conseco, but past that is a mystery.

      Ranked:

#1 Sam Bennett, Anderson Highland, 34-0
#8 Nick Manning, South Dearborn, 36-2
      #13 James Frascella, Carmel, 24-6
      #17 Austin Neibarger, Cathedral, 33-5

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #1 Sam Bennett
      2. #8 Nick Manning
      3. #17 Austin Neibarger
      4. #13 James Frascella

      All hail the champ:

      #1 Sam Bennett

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Robert Hawthorne, Crispus Attucks, 33-6 vs. #13 Frascella (ticket round)--It would be a great story to see the Attucks wrestler and regional champ Hawthorne advance to state.
Taylor Evans, Clinton Central, 36-2 vs. #17 Neibarger (ticket round)--Evans has been on the cusp before and he has the experience advantage. However, Neibarger is not your average freshman and Evans will have to be in top form to advance.
Mike Taylor, Lawrence Central, 34-8 vs. #8 Manning (ticket round)--Although each wrestler has a tough opening match, this would be a great ticket bout. Manning's a solid favorite, but Taylor is explosive and dangerous.

      160

Outlook: This is a very deep weight class, led by #2 Tyler Willis. Willis was strongly tested last weekend by Quinton Brooks, which has to boost the confidence of the field at New Castle. There are no easy opening round matches and some great wrestlers won't even make it to the ticket round. There are two top-five wrestlers, five wrestlers in the top-thirteen, and six ranked wrestlers altogether. In addition, the bracket is chock full of dangerous kids like Sam Shoaf, Jake Hockenbury, Jake Evans, Cody Becker, Dylon Gregg and Mark Brown.

      Ranked:

      #2 Tyler Willis, Cathedral, 36-1
#4 Jake Jennings, New Palestine, 38-2
#11 Von Wasson, New Castle, 49-1
      #12 Curtis Anderson, Carmel, 29-4
#13 Quinton Brooks, Lawrence North, 32-7
      #16 Jeremiah Oliver, Pike, 35-3

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #2 Tyler Willis
      2. #13 Quinton Brooks
      3. #11 Von Wasson
      4. #16 Jeremiah Oliver

      All hail the champ:

      #2 Tyler Willis

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Sam Shoaf, Fountain Central, 39-3 vs. #4 Jennings (opening round)--Jennings put himself in the unenviable position of having to beat Shoaf and Willis to qualify for the state tourney. While he has been magnificent all year, he lost to Hockenbury last week and now has a tough road starting with the senior Shoaf.
#4 Jennings vs. #2 Willis (ticket round)--This has to be one of the premier ticket matchups, not only in New Castle, but in the entire state. Willis had a huge gash on his head that required frequent and extensive wrapping, so hopefully that won't play a role in this huge match.
Jake Hockenbury, Decatur Central, 20-7 vs. Jake Evans, Clinton Central, 35-3 (opening round)--The two Jakes will battle for the right to likely face Von Wasson. Hockenbury pulled the huge upset last week over #4 Jennings and is capable of pulling another. Evans is a very tough, underrated wrestler--two of his three losses are to Anderson.
#12 Anderson vs. #13 Brooks (ticket round)--Assuming Brooks can beat the very tough Mark Brown (East Central, 36-7), these two should battle for the right to advance to Conseco. Anderson already owns a win over Brooks this season, but Brooks was pretty impressive at Regionals. Should be very tight regardless of the winner.

      171

Outlook: 171 features defending state champ and Ohio University signee Michael Duckworth. Duckworth has a very tough path to a semi-state title this year, but last year's was no picnic either and he survived. Including the Union County standout, there are seven ranked wrestlers here--this is a truly loaded field, with 12 participants with 28 or more wins this season. It's very possible that four of the ranked kids will not advance, as returning state qualifier Anthony Bill looms large in the bracket.

      Ranked:

#1 Michael Duckworth, Union County (defending state champ at 171), 42-0
      #11 Kevin Moats, Tipton, 38-3
#14 Scott Moore, Fountain Central, 31-3
#17 Mike Smith, North Central, 34-2
      #18 Mitchell Judkins, Speedway, 29-5
#19 Mike Phelps, New Palestine, 32-4
      #20 Jacob Howenstein, Zionsville, 32-5

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #1 Michael Duckworth
      2. #17 Mike Smith
      3. #11 Kevin Moats
      4. Anthony Bill, Bishop Chatard, 30-3

      All hail the champ:

      #1 Michael Duckworth

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

#14 Moore vs. #19 Phelps (opening round)--Wow, this bracket is almost tragically full of quality wrestlers. Moore and Phelps are two of the better 171s in the state, and they have to fight for the right to face the defending state champion at this weight. It's a real shame that neither of these kids is likely to advance. This should be a war.
#18 Judkins vs. Bill (ticket round)--Judkins has been in the mix in central Indiana for a couple of years now and could definitely win two matches at New Castle. He has a tough opener against Craig Fairley (Crawfordsville, 29-6).
#20 Howenstein vs. #11 Moats (ticket round)--Assuming Howenstein can get by the tough Roncalli wrestler Jake Bartley (21-10) and Moats can get by Rushville's Jon Flanary (35-5), this should be a dogfight to grab a spot in the state finals.
Dakota Gruell, Greenfield Central, 31-10 vs. #17 Smith (ticket round)--Gruell is red-hot and coming off of a regional title over some high quality wrestlers. Smith is a returning state qualifier and finished 2nd in a brutal regional.

      189

Outlook: This is a very intriguing weight at New Castle, partially because it's the semi-state debut of uber-frosh Mitch Sliga. Sliga, Michael Johnson-Jones and Ibragim Komilov are pretty solid bets to advance. The final spot is pretty wide open. Not the deepest weight, but there is some quality at the top and it should be an exciting battle for the last spot.

      Ranked:

      #3 Mitch Sliga, Fishers, 38-1
      #4 Michael Johnson-Jones, Warren Central, 36-1

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #4 Michael Johnson-Jones
      2. Ibragim Komilov, North Central, 18-1
      3. #3 Mitch Sliga
      4. Andre Richards, Perry Meridian, 31-11

      All hail the champ:

      #4 Michael Johnson-Jones

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Kevin Wilger, South Dearborn, 31-9 vs. Richards (ticket round)--Assuming each wins his opening match (Richards' opener against Carmel'S senior Spencer Morris (23-14) is the tougher of the two), we should be treated to the fine wrestling of the soph Richards and senior Wilger and the vocal stylings of caliboy189.
Jacob Poynter, New Palestine, 25-9 vs. Komilov (ticket round)--Poynter is a very solid wrestler, but Komilov absolutely manhandled Pendlton Heights' opponents, winning with three dominant falls.

      215

Outlook: This is a competitive field without a strong favorite. By the rankings, Balbach should win it, but in reality there are four or five kids with a shot at the semi-state crown. Cooper beat Balbach last weekend. There is very good depth here.

      Ranked:

#6 Sam Balbach, Mount Vernon (Fortville), 35-4
#12 Logan Cooper, Perry Meridian, 23-4
      #13 Arthur Wright, Tech, 33-3
      #17 Jake Buchanan, Cathedral, 30-4

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #12 Logan Cooper
      2. #13 Arthur Wright
      3. #17 Jake Buchanan
      4. Kyle Smitherman, Pendleton Heights, 35-6

      All hail the champ:

      #12 Logan Cooper

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Andy Jacquet, Clinton Central, 31-6 vs. #13 Wright (opening round)--Team Indiana member Jacquet has a draw that would wake most wrestlers up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. In order to advance, he will have to knock off regional champion Wright, then turn around and beat #6 Balbach or Forman. Needless to say, a tough row to hoe for the Bulldog wrestler
Ron Forman, South Dearborn, 28-4 vs. #6 Balbach (opening round)--Don't be too surprised if Forman trips up the highly ranked Balbach. A rough regionals performance might have cost Forman a good shot at qualifying for state.
#13 Wright vs. #6 Balbach (ticket round)--Assuming each ranked wrestler takes care of business against tough first round opponents, it sets up a huge ticket match. Wright was sharp last week, but nearly fell to Kevin Gaughan (North Central, 36-10). Wright won it OT on a tough stalling penalty against Gaughan.
Jason Pedigo, Zionsville, 28-11 vs. Smitherman (opening round)--Smitherman lost two very, very close matches last weekend or he might've been regional champ. Pedigo was, in fact, a regional champ.
Sam Carnes, Westfield, 33-12 vs. Gaughan (opening round)--These two wrestlers are both hard-nosed grinders. Gaughan was excellent last weekend, whereas Carnes lost to a wrestler he beat the week prior. The winner likely gets Logan Cooper.

      285

Outlook: Liks last year, this is not the strongest field in New Castle. Last year's heavyweight competition featured the biggest upset in a while at this semi-state, when Ethan Cuevas was pinned unexpectedly by Rockville's Jake Wimsett. No one here this year is quite in Cuevas's class, but there are some tough kids like Dylan McBride, Ben Jackson, Willie Henson, Blaec Gray, Caleb Miller, Trent Wallace and Kyle White competing for the crown. As wide open as any weight at New Castle. Unlike last year, I would be willing to bet that at least one of the advancers places at Conseco.

      Ranked:

      #12 Ben Jackson, Milan,
      #14 Willie Henson, North Central,
      #17 Dylan McBride, Crawfordsville

      I've got a Golden Ticket:

      [caption id=attachment_1790" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="On to Conseco][/caption]

      1. #17 Dylan McBride
      2. #14 Willie Henson
      3. #12 Ben Jackson
      4. Blaec Gray, Rushville, 26-4

      All hail the champ:

      #17 Dylan McBride

      Potential surprises/Epic matchups:

Eric Thigpen, Lawrence Central, 20-5 vs. Roddreckis Harris, Northwest, 31-3 (opening round)--This battle of Indianapolis-based juniors could come down to experience. Former semi-state qualifier Thigpen has the edge there. The winner has to face McBride.
Wesley Stokes, Cathedral, 18-7 vs. #12 Jackson (ticket round)--Stokes is kind of hit or miss, but when he's hot, he can beat some good wrestlers.
Caleb Miller, North Vermillion, 31-4 vs. #14 Henson (ticket round)--Henson has wrestled a very tough schedule and that might be the edge in this matchup between two tough heavies.
Trent Wallace, South Vermillion, 35-6 vs. Gray (opening round)--Wallace finished third in a pretty tough sectional and regional for heavyweights. Gray finished second in his regional and this one could go either way. The winner will likely face regional champ Kyle White (21-8) of Warren Central.

      Tallinn is beautiful in August

More people from Indiana have Googled Estonia over the past few days than ever before and with good reason. After this weekend Indiana will have four representatives at the Junior World Championships in Tallinn, Estonia. For those of you that want a little geography lesson, Tallinn is the largest city and capital of Estonia. Estonia is a country that has about 1.3 million people and is about half the size of Indiana. It is a very historical city and sits on the Baltic Sea.  Wikipedia has a lot of great information Tallinn and Estonia, just click here for that info.
Now onto the wrestling part, which is why you’re here. Last week Alara Boyd was dominant in her quest to make her first Junior World Team at Women’s Nationals in Texas. After medaling twice as a cadet she is looking for her third world medal in as many tries this year.
The men duked it out this weekend in Raleigh this past weekend looking to join Boyd in Tallinn. Lucas Davison had an immense advantage sitting out until the second day already in the best of three finals. Brayton Lee was the top seed in the challenge tournament in an extremely deep weight class. Lastly, Mason Parris decided a couple weeks ago to start training for the event and with his Fargo placement last year was given the three seed. The tournament brackets were small due to a limited number of qualifiers. Most brackets were 8 man or less with a couple that had around 10 competitors.
Parris’ path to Estonia was quite unique to say the least. Not only was entering the trials a late decision, the top two wrestlers from the Junior Open did not come to the trials. That left the weight wide open as Anthony Cassioppi was considered a big favorite to win the weight.
Parris had one match on Saturday where he defeated Virginia Tech’s John Borst 7-4. That put him in the best of three finals against Wiconsin’s Trent Hillger with whom he defeated during the NCAA season. In the first match of the best of three series Hillger topped Parris 7-6 after a late flurry of action that almost gave Parris the win. The second an third matches were quite different as Mason go after it early with a tech fall in the second match and a pin in about a minute in the last match.
Lucas Davison saw North Carolina’s Brandon Whitman in the finals. Whitman was an NCAA qualifier last year for the Tar Heels as a true freshman. Davison dominated the first match 9-0 with a big 8 point first period. In the second match he wrestled a little more conservatively and won 5-0. Not only will Davison have Indiana friends on the Junior World Team, his Wildcat teammate Yahya Thomas is also on the team.
Brayton Lee had quite the weekend to say the least. Brayton employed quite a unique strategy all weekend long and while it took a few more hairs off his dad Brett’s head it worked out well in the end. He started Friday out with a late tech fall of Justin McCoy who wrestles for Virginia. After that match the drama began. In the challenge bracket semi-finals he faced off with rival Jacori Teemer. They have wrestled three times before and every match was pure pandemonium. This match would be no different. Teemer raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first period on a couple snatch singles and pushout. At the start of the second period something changed…that being Lee broke the ice. He scored 12 straight points to take the lead and ended up winning 12-9.
In the bracket finals Lee had Peyton Robb who was a redshirt for Nebraska last year. This time Robb raced out to an 8-2 lead late in the first period before rattling of four late points to close the gap to 8-6 at the break. The second period once again was all Lee as he racked up 11 more points to win 17-6.
Next up for Lee would be Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso who made quick work of him in Vegas. Lee was prepared to not give up a leg lace, but early on may have forgotten about leg defense. Sasso came out hungry and was up 6-0 after the first period. Another early score in the second period it looked like the match would be cut early due to a tech fall. However, Mr. Lee had other plans. He kept the pressure on and started to crack the ice with constant pressure and heavy hands. Lee started with one takedown, then another with a turn, then a pushout and for good measure two more takedowns to eventually break Sasso. The final score was 11-8 after 11 straight points by Lee.
The final match had a little less drama as you could tell Sasso was still tired both mentally and physically from the first one. Sasso got an early push-out, but Lee rattled off another 8 points to win convincingly 8-1 and earn his trip to Tallinn. On the weekend Lee scored 47 points in the second period while only allowing 7(3 to McCoy and 2 each to Teemer and Sasso).
This year is the third time we have had multiple representatives in the same age group and style at a World Championships. The two other times were when Angel Escobedo and Reece Humphrey both represented the USA at the University Championships in 2010 and the Senior Championships in 2013. Before this weekend Indiana has had six others qualify for the Junior World Championships: Leroy Vega(1999), Matt Coughlin(2006), Angel Escobedo(2007), Andrew Howe(2009), Jason Tsirtsis(2013), and Stevan Micic(2015). Micic and Howe both brought home bronze medals.
On the senior side of things three Indiana natives had solid days on the mat. Kayla Miracle fresh off claiming her third straight spot on a U23 team made quick work of Desiree Zavala spending less than two minutes on the mat total in two matches. She pinned Zavala in 1:10 in the first match and almost broke a sweat in a 34 second tech in the second. She clinched a spot in Final X where she will face Mallory Velte in the best of three series for a spot on the senior world team. Last year Velte won the series in three matches and went on to win a bronze medal at the World Championships.
On the men’s side of things Riley Lefever and Ben Harvey came into the challenge bracket as a 5 and 7 seed respectively. Both exceeded seed expectations and placed 3rd and 4th. For Lefever he lost to Ohio State’s Kollin Moore in his first bout. He beat three-time All-American Tim Dudley in his first consolation match then avenged his loss to Moore for 3rd place.
Harvey faced Mark Hall first round and dropped that match. He defeated Stacey Davis and Geno Morelli in the consolations before falling to Nick Becker in the 3rd place bout.
Overall Indiana had a great few days on the mat and will be well represented at the world level. Currently we have five representatives on teams with the cadet teams determined in a couple weeks and both Hildebrandt and Miracle two wins from earning their spots at Final X. Both girls will be at Final X in Lincoln on June 15th.

      Green, Preston Ranked by NWCA

ANGOLA, IND.-- Trine wrestlers Mack Green and Brandon Preston are both nationally-ranked in the first National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III rankings.
A reigning All-American, Green (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) is ranked third in the Heavyweight division. Preston (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) is ranked ninth among 133-lb wrestlers. Green concluded last season with a 33-8 record. That mark was good enough for Green to tie for the third-highest win total in a season in school-history. The senior placed first at both the Mid-States Tournament and Trine University Invitational. A 5-2 performance in the National Championships capped off his junior season with All-America honors.
Defending-National Champion James Buss of Loras College, and reigning third-place finisher Zach Roseberry of Delaware Valley are the only two wrestlers ranked ahead of Green.
Preston battled through injuries and was still able to earn a National Championship berth last season, as he concluded the year with a 25-15 record. Included in that record were five wins by pin, two by tech fall and five by major decision. Preston has appeared in the National Championships at both the 125-lb and 133-lb weight classes.
Also included among last season's highlights for Preston was a first-place finish in the Ohio Northern Invitational, and a second-place finish at the Mid-States Tournament.
Trine opens the season Saturday, Nov. 8 at Muskegon (Mich.) Community College's Ben McMullen Open. The Thunder will host the Trine Invitational Saturday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team will hold its annual Gold & Black Matches in Holloway Gymnasium Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. All 10 weights will be contested as the Boilermakers prepare for their season opener at Cal Poly on Nov. 14. The Gold & Black Matches are free and open to the public.
"We're hoping a lot of fans will come out and watch our Gold & Black Matches because we are excited and we are ready," head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. "I am proud of the hard work that our team has put in this fall and I am excited to see what they can accomplish during the season."
Ersland had the opportunity to see his squad in action while wrestling unattached at the Michigan State Open Nov. 2. Twenty-seven grapplers competed across the Freshman/Sophomore and Open Divisions with nine individuals placing.
      OPEN DIVISION FRESHMAN/SOPHOMORE DIVISION 125 // Aaron Assad // 6th 125 // Jonathan Marmolejo // 4th 133 // Kyle Ayersman // 5th 125 // Ben Thornton // 5th 141 // Nick Lawrence // 4th   149 // Brandon Nelsen // 2nd   174 // Chad Welch // 4th   174 // Jacob Morrissey // 5th   184 // Patrick Kissel // 2nd   The Michigan State Open served as an early measuring stick, but also helped set the stage for the Gold & Black Matches.
"We were excited that we were able to see our guys compete last weekend at the Michigan State Open," Ersland said. "We used it as an evaluation tool to see where our team stands. We saw some good things and we also saw what we need to work on. The Gold & Black Matches will help the coaches and I evaluate what our lineup looks like in the future and heading into our first dual at Cal Poly."
Fans in attendance will be the first to see and take home the 2014-15 Purdue wrestling poster and have a chance to win a Boilermaker Wrestling Experience for each of the eight home duals this season. A winner and their guest will join the wrestling team for warmups and sit on the bench during the dual.

Fishers, Indiana Native wins Super 8 Invitational

Platteville Wis.-   University of Wisconsin-Plattville sophomore Alexander Strueder (Fisher, Indiana) scored a takedown in sudden victory to win the 157 pound championship in the annual Super 8 Invitaional in the Pioneers’ Williams Fieldhouse.
With the score tied 3-3  late in the third period, Strueder needed a take down due to the point for riding time that Jessy Diaz of the University of Dubuque would have been rewarded.  Stueder got the take down and what was thought to be for the championship as time ran out.   The officials got together and determined that Strueder let go of Diaz with one second on the clock and rewarded Diaz with a point for escaping and the extra point for riding time to force sudden victory period.
Starting in neutral position, Stueder made short work as the aggresser in the sudden victory  period recording the takedown 10 seconds into the period to officaly be crowned the champion.
“Coach (Mike) DeRoehn always preaches to fight your butt off, how hard can you fight. I gave up a takedown early, but came back and got the takedown with a second left, going in to overtime I knew I was prepared, we been working our butts off in the (wrestling) room,”  Strueder said. “I knew I had an opportunity to go out there and make a statement and not leave it in the hands of the officials and take the match in my hands.  I went back to what was working for me, my double underhooks, and took him down and that was the match.”
“Mindset was the difference maker for Strueder today. Throughout the tournament, he did a great job of listening to the coaches and then executed some crucial in-match technical adjustments,” DeRoehn said.  “It was outstanding to see him keep his composure under pressure in the championship match and we’re really proud of his fight out there today.”

      Lewis Joins Purdue Wrestling Staff

The former Missouri Tiger was a four-time All-American
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue wrestling head coach Tony Ersland made a splashy hire Wednesday, welcoming four-time NCAA All-American Daniel Lewis into the Boilermaker wrestling room as a graduate assistant. The former Missouri Tiger competed at 165 and 174 pounds over the last four NCAA seasons, graduating as one of the top wrestlers in program history.
“It’s not every day you have the opportunity to bring a four-time All-American into your room, and we’re thrilled to welcome Daniel to our team,” said Ersland. “His success on the mat speaks for itself, his abilities in the classroom are even more impressive and I can’t wait to get him around our guys.”
The Blue Springs, Missouri native racked up a career record of 118-17 for the Tigers, earning All-America at 165 pounds as a freshman and sophomore and then at 174 pounds in his final two seasons. He’s one of only three four-time All-Americans in Missouri wrestling history, joining Ben Askren and J’Den Cox.
“I feel blessed to be granted such an amazing opportunity to continue my education and start giving back to the sport that gave me so much,” said Lewis. “My glory days of college wrestling are over, but I plan to find success in the lessons and experiences I pass on to my new Boilermaker family.”
Lewis won four straight Mid-American Conference individual titles, leading Missouri to the team championship in every season and was named the MAC Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2018. Fifty-three of his 118 career wins came by fall (44.9%), good for second-most in Missouri history, and he took home the 2019 Gorarrian Award for recording the most falls at the NCAA Championships.
He earned MAC Freshman Wrestler of the Year honors and Missouri’s Marshall Esteppe Most Outstanding Freshman award in 2016, finishing 29-6 at 165 pounds and finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships. He followed up with a 28-6 mark in 2017, again at 165, and took sixth at the national tournament.
After moving up to 174 pounds as a junior in 2017-18, Lewis reeled off 32 straight victories to start the season, including a flawless 26-0 mark in the regular season and his third straight MAC title. His 17 falls were a team and career high, and he went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships. Lewis’s senior season brought a similar level of success, posting a 28-3 overall mark with 17 falls, earning his fourth straight MAC crown and another fourth-place effort at the national tournament. He went undefeated in duals over his final two years and finished 25-1 in dual competition for his career. He shared Missouri’s Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in each of his last two seasons and was named the University of Missouri Male Athlete of the Year in 2019.
Lewis earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in May of 2019 from Missouri with an emphasis in aerospace engineering and will be pursuing his master’s degree in Business Administration from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue. He completed a construction/property management internship with The Kroenke Group in Columbia, Missouri in the summer of 2018, and worked at ProCraft Mechanical in Broomfield, Colorado as a project operations intern in 2019.

      Perry Meridian Regional Preview

      106

This weight class has 4 very good wrestlers in the field with all four capable of winning the regional. CJ Whitten beat Vance Ellis once and also beat Jacob Cottey 3 times. However, each match against Cottey gets tighter. Tommy Cash beat both Ellis and Cottey handily. However, Cottey has beaten Ellis by a very slim 1-point margin. Needless to say, this will be a very competitive Semifinal round.

This weight class is also competitive and has 4 very good wrestlers with Brandon James from Perry Meridian being the favorite. James beat Deondre Wilson 10-0 last weekend at Sectionals. Taylor Fee beat Barry McGinley 12-6 at sectionals.  With very few match ups between the four ranked wrestlers in this weight class, things could get interesting. Keep a close eye on Barry McGinley as his length can cause problems for some wrestlers.

All of the top wrestlers in this weight class are capable of beating each other, evidenced by their match ups this season. Andrice Martin hasn’t lost since the first week of the season, which was dealt by Perry Meridian’s Aidan Kenny. Martin has since beat Kenny twice with the last match up being a pretty convincing score of 11-2. When you throw in Roncalli’s Josh King, who beat Kenny last year a couple of times, and Ramirez, whom had 3 close matches with Kenny, is easy to see why this weight class will be one to watch.

The clear-cut favorite in this weight class in Perry Meridian’s Sophomore Cody LeCount. But the battle for 2-4 will be a hard fought as the other participants in the regional seem to be evenly matched. Mikhail Randall from Ben Davis has been wrestling well as of late and might surprise some people and sneak into the finals. He will have the hard task of beating the tough sophomore from Greenfield Central, Sam Locke, to make it to the finals.

This is a pretty deep weight class with a talent pool that includes Jared McKinley from Perry Meridian, Levi Moss from Ben Davis, and Robert Duncan from Arsenal Tech. Throw freshman Garrett Wilson from Franklin Central and Senior Brennan Ellis from Roncalli into the mix and this you’re looking at a very competitive weight class. Look for McKinley and Moss to meet up in the final match for their fourth battle of the season.

A lot of wrestlers looking will be looking for revenge against Perry Meridian’s Nick Bova in this class. During the last match up between Bova and Greenfield Central’s Josh Farrell, Bova won by fall. Expect Robbie Elsea of New Palestine to put up a strong fight in an effort to settle the scores after Bova’s 6-1 victory after 2OT’s during their last matchup. This weight class could be won any of these 3 wrestlers.

This is the deepest class in this regional as several kids have been ranked at one point in the season.  Nick Ulrey, Clayton Davenport, Riley McClurg, Nick Ader, Shabaka Johns, and Brian Boucher all are tough kids but only 4 of them will get the nod to move on.

With a weight class loaded with seniors, you can bet these wrestlers will be putting it all on the line. Although Kyle Riedling of Warren Central has been battling injuries all year, he can make a run at the podium if he is able to wrestle at 100%. Tre Spencer of Pike might have something to say about that; they could meet in the finals in a rematch from the Marion County semi finals. Paul Matthews of Perry Meridian turned it on as of late and beat some tough opponents last week at sectionals. Paul’s first round match is against Austin Rose of Greenfield Central who beat Paul  5-2 early in the season. Logan Zielinski of Roncalli also faces a tough opponent in Drake Duncan of Ben Davis. One guarantee is that all 8 wrestlers in this class will leave it all on the mat.

This is Kirk Johnson’s tournament to lose as he has beat almost everyone in the field (some multiple times). Although he’s had close matches with New Palestine’s Conner Robinson and Roncalli’s Danny Rojas, Johnson consistently comes out on top. However, this field is full of athletes and anything could happen making this an exciting weight class to watch.

The weight class is filled with exciting wrestlers with the likes of Jake Masengale, Dezmen McGinley, Joe Ardizzone, and Noah Perdue. Masengale has wrestled Ardizzone in two single-point matches this year and should meet in an exciting semi final match up. The winner will likely wrestle McGinley of Greenfield Central who had a very high scoring match with Masengale early this season and dominated Ardizzone at Sectionals.

This weight class is filled with talent and will certainly be a hard fought battle for whomever comes out on top. CJ Martin of Perry Meridian and Tony Jehn of Beech Grove each have 4 losses and look to be on a crash-course for the finals. But they definitely can’t look past any opponent in this field or they’ll be cutting their season shorter. Desean Mills of Arsenal Tech had a disappointing sectional tournament and is looking to avenge it with a good regional showing. The regional title is up for grabs; let’s see who steps up and takes what they want.

Ian Early is the a clear-cut favorite in this weight class. He already handily beat Devante Ash of Perry Meridian and Dyrek Chowning of Warren Central. Ash and Chowning are likely to meet up in the semi’s for their third battle this season. Chowning won both previous match ups.   Seniors Nolan Fenwick of Southport and Cameron Denney of New Palestine will face each other in the first round, which should be a great match. With a lot of seniors in the field expect a lot of hard-nosed wrestling.

With several rematches and a talented bunch of big guys, this weight class has the possibility of some great match ups.  Jordan Naughton Perry Meridian and Georgio Blades Warren Central split 2 matches earlier this year. There is also a chance that Naughton will face Justin Sanders of Pike for the fifth time this season. They split previous match ups this season with 2 wins a piece. Who will come out on top? We will have to wait and see.

Donte Winfield of Perry Meridian is the favorite at this weight class. He beat his probably finals opponent, Larry Carter of Warren Central, on two occasions this season. Tyler Uhls of Shelbyville could be the road block to this rematch in an generally unpredictable weight class.

38th Annual Allen County Athletic Conference Wrestling Tournament

Teams: Adams Central, Bluffton, Garrett, Heritage, Leo, South Adams, Southern Wells, Woodlan

The Allen County Athletic Conference(ACAC) is one of the premier small school wrestling conferences in the state.  The conference has many superb individuals along with some very talented teams this season.  The conference that features schools in 3A, 2A and 1A in football, only has four, yes four forfeits in the whole entire tournament.  Six of the eight teams have full line-ups, which will lead to a very competitive tournament.

During the regular season, the South Adams Starfires ran the table and beat everyone in the conference.  They beat both Garrett and Southern Wells by narrow four point margins.  The Starfires are also the defending tournament champions and will look to retain the title on their home floor.  They will find stiff challengers in the other seven teams who will aim to knock them off any chance they get.

      103lbs
At 103lbs, the #1 seed is Todd Batt from South Adams.  He sports a superb 27-2 record on the season.  The #2 seed is Logan Buuck of Woodlan who has a record just under .500, beat the #3 seed Brandon Bennett of Heritage 7-3 earlier in the season.  The sleeper of the tournament could be Nate Hess of Adams Central.  He comes in with only nine matches under his belt, but he is a returning regional qualifier from last year.

      112lbs
Phillip Gerber of Bluffton has the top seed at this weight class.  The freshman comes into the conference tournament with a 20-8 record and has beaten the #2 seed Gabe Sprunger of South Adams and #3 seed Michael Hirshy of Adams Central during the season.  Once again, there is no slouch at the #4 seed in Heritage's Alex Richman who comes into the tournament with a stellar 19-4 record.

      119lbs
This weight class is going to be one of the most interesting of the day.  Bluffton gets their second #1 seed in a row with Bobby Perry and his 24-3 record taking the honors.  One of those losses however is to the #3 seed from Garrett, Logan Lee.  The #2 seed is Adams Central's Zeke Schultz.  Schultz and Lee did not wrestle during the dual and sport nearly identical records.  South Adams rounds out the top four seeds with Cajon Dailey taking the 4th seed.

      125lbs
Returning ACAC champion Troy Fiechter claimed the top seed at this weight class.  Fiechter sports a superb record of 27-2 after bumping up from 112lbs last season.  He will have some tough wrestlers to go through this year to defend his title.  The #2 seed, John Striker of South Adams comes in with only three losses on the season, including one to Fiechter's brother Darin.  The #3 seed, Shea Novy of Garrett comes in with a 24-4 record.  Bluffton's Seth Higgins, wrestling at a more natural weight this year, took the 4th seed, but will face a tough Blake Thieme of Adams Central in the first round.

      130lbs
This will be one of the best weight classes to watch on Saturday, with one returning state qualifier and two semi-state qualifiers battling it out for top honors.  As with his brother Troy, Darin Fiechter of Southern Wells is a defending champion and has the #1 seed.  Darin has only one blemish on his record, a loss to Andrew Heistand of Yorktown.  Second seed Jace German also sports just one blemish on his record, a 6-4 loss to Darin Fiechter.  The #3 seed is returning state qualifier Josh Ehr of South Adams.  While he has seven losses on the season, he has lost to some tough kids while wrestling 135lbs most of the season.  The #4 seed is the very talented freshman from Woodlan Cody Zink.

      135lbs
This is another interesting weight class with some very tough wrestlers.  Earning the #1 seed is Matthew Gerber of Bluffton who has a 25-2 record on the season.  His two losses have come to Zach DeHaven of Evansville Memorial and Chris Goodwin of Perry Meridian.  The #2 seed is Garrett's Bryce Schendel.  Schendel only has one loss on the season and that is to Gerber.  Gerber will be looking to capture his second straight title, while Schendel will be going for his third title in three years.  While these two are the top contenders in this weight, they cannot overlook #3 seed Josh Morris of Southern Wells, #4 seed Taylor Isch of Adams Central or unseeded Jordan Buuck of Woodlan.

      140lbs
Leo brings in back to back #1 seeds at 140lbs and 145lbs respectively.  The first is Justin Beck at 140lbs.  He has an outstanding 20-2 record on the season with his only losses to the top two seeds at 135lbs, Bryce Schendel of Garrett and Matt Gerber of Bluffton.  The #2 seed is Matt Kaehr of Adams Central who comes in with a 26-4 record on the season.  TJ Burnfield of South Adams has the third seed and comes in with a very impressive 25-5 record on the season.  The fourth seed is Garrett's Brayden Moreau who comes in with only three losses in limited action this year.

      145lbs
Returning state qualifier and ACAC champion Cam Friend is the headliner in this weight class.  The tournament features seven wrestlers with only a single loss, but Friend is the only wrestler without a defeat this season while wrestling mostly 152lbs and 160lbs until just recently.  Garrett senior Nik Isham is the #2 seed, while Levi Jones of Southern Wells is the 3rd seed.  The 4th seed is Dustin Hunt of South Adams, who has only four losses in limited varsity action this year.

      152lbs
Defending ACAC champion Zac McCray of Garrett is back at this weight class for the third straight year.  He comes into the tournament with a 23-5 record on the season and is looking to bring home his second ACAC title.  Chase Sprunger of South Adams is the second seed and will be looking to claim his second ACAC title also.  Sprunger won a title in 2006 as a sophomore, but was defeated in the finals last year.  Last year's runner-up, Jayme Schwartz of Woodlan is the third seed at this weight class.  The fourth seed is Leo's Caleb Eicher.

      160lbs
Bluffton has yet another top seed, this time Josh Fiechter at 160lbs.  Fiechter comes in as the heavy favorite with a 23-5 slate on the season.  The second seed is Joe Taube of Garrett who has an 18-6 record on the season.  Ben Sowles of Woodlan who has the third seed with a 12-5 record will push Taube in the lower half bracket.  The fourth seed is Heritage's Dan Gibson.

      171lbs
This is another weight class that will be fun to watch with two wrestlers having only one blemish on their record.  The top seed is Garrett's Luke Rieke with a 26-1 record.  Not to be outdone, Adams Central's Trey Schultz has a 21-1 record on the season.  Rieke was the runner-up last year at 171lbs, while Schultz won the title at 160lbs.  While those two wrestlers are very talented, they cannot overlook the #3 seed Matt Morrissey of Bluffton or #4 seed Brandon Biberstine of Southern Wells.  Tyler Unsicker of Heritage is unseeded, but could give fits to the seeded wrestlers, as he is 15-10 on the season.

      189lbs
Heritage's lone #1 seed is Taylor Scott at 189lbs.  Scott comes in with 20 wins on the season against only three losses.  The second seed is Bluffton's Levi Mock who comes in with 21 wins himself.  The #3 seed is Garrett's Logan DeMarco, while Leo's Ben Meeks has the 4th seed.

      215lbs
South Adams rounds out the last two weight classes with returning champions and #1 seeds.  The first is Jackson Werst at 215lbs, who comes in with a stellar 29-1 record on the season.  His only loss is to #4 seed Seth Biberstine of Southern Wells.  The second seed is Garrett's Geoff Getts, while Adams Central's Aden Feasel has the third seed.  Biberstine defeated Werst by major decision less than a week ago, but Biberstine lost to both Getts and Feasel earlier in the season.  On top of that Werst has defeated both Getts and Feasel.  If you are too confused to follow, just come to Berne on Saturday to see everything sort itself out!

      285lbs
Finally, the last weight class is also one that has two top competitors.  South Adam's Jim West comes in as the defending champion and #1 seed with a 24-4 record on the season.  Joe Grueb of Woodlan is the second seed with only one loss on the season at 14-1.  The third seed is Leo's Nick McAbee and Alex Reinhard of Adams Central rounds out the top four seeds.  Not to be overlooked is Heritage's Josh Mitchel who has a 17-9 record on the year and is unseeded.

      Team Race
Lovely Berne, Indiana and South Adams High School will play host to this great tournament.  The team championship race looks like a two-horse race with the host Starfires and Garrett Railroaders looking to lead the way.  Adams Central, Bluffton, Leo and Southern Wells each bring in their fair share of top seeds and could add some excitement to the team race.  Look for the team race to be hotly contested with all the teams potentially affecting the outcome.
