Trine University hosted the Little States wrestling tournament on Saturday featuring competition from around the state and the Midwest. Teams that were represented from Indiana included Trine, Indianapolis, Manchester, Wabash, Calumet College and the IPFW club team. Other teams that joined the meet was University of the Cumberlands out of Kentucky, Lincoln Junior College and Rend Lake College from Illinois, Mount Saint Joseph and Muskingum out of Ohio, and Wisconsin-Whitewater out of Wisconsin. Mount Saint Joseph is coached by former Indiana standout Casey Stouffer and Lincoln Junior College assistant coach is former three-time state champion Steven Bradley.
While no team scores were kept, Trine led the way with 16 placers and two champs. Indianapolis had 13 placers and three champs on the day. Wabash College also had a good showing with nine placers and three champs. First year programs, Calumet College of St. Joseph and IPFW had four placers and one placer respectively. Finally, Manchester checked in with two placers.
Out of the 80 placers in the tournament, there were 32 former Indiana high school wrestlers that placed. Perry Meridian, Peru and Yorktown both had two placers each. Former Indiana high school wrestlers that finished as champions included Lynn Panko(Avon), Alex Johns(Evansville Reitz), Nick Kraus(New Prairie), Nick Walpole(Perry Meridian), George Markou(Peru) and Michael Burke(Yorktown). D’Marcus Spencer of Pike and Kyle Long of South Bend Washington both finished in second place.
Trine University will be travelling to Waverly, Iowa next weekend for the Dick Walker Invitational at DIII powerhouse Wartburg College. Wabash College is next in action at the North Central Invitational next weekend in Chicago, Illinois. The University of Indianapolis next has a dual with Trine in Indianapolis on December 17th. Manchester College will be hosting Ohio Northern in a dual on Friday. Calumet College will wrestle at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois on December 19th. All five of the teams will be seeing eachother for a New Year celebration in Indianapolis for the Midwest Classic on January 2nd and 3rd. The Midwest Classic includes many teams from across the Midwest many top ranked DII and DIII teams.
