Junior Freestyle Day 1 Recap

After two grueling sessions of Junior Freestyle action eight of the 31 Hoosier competitors survived to wrestle on day two. Anyone that has followed this tournament knows that top wrestlers are routinely beaten early in the tournament and this year is no different. Stop sign collector Mitch Sliga will have his back against the wall as he dropped his first round match to Timothy Dudley of South Carolina, but has battled back against two tough wrestlers the next two rounds. Dudley is a Nebraska signee and no slouch, even predicted by FloWrestling to win the tournament.

Returning All-American Jared McKinley won all five matches without surrendering a period. Neal Molloy is also undefeated at 138lbs with three tech falls, a pin and a decision. Tomorrow will be a huge test as Molloy has one of the tournaments toughest pools. Donte “the black bear” Winfield has dominated in his three matches, winning two by pin and one by tech fall.

Another returning All-American, Jacob Cottey is 2-1 on the day at 106lbs. Tommy Forte is 4-1 on the day dropping his last match of the day in the other half of the 138lbs bracket. Riley Lefever finished the day 3-1 with his lone loss to Minnesota recruit and Cody Phillips’ roommate Dylan Reel. Jacob Barclay made it to day two at 220lbs with a 2-1 record on the day.

Comments: This upcoming match is a must win for Cottey, he will probably need to win two more matches to get back on the podium.

Jared Mckinley

132lbs Pool A

Going Out Next Round: 1-3

Comments: McKinley is looking good yet again at Fargo. He has a solid pool, but can win it if he wrestles to his potential. Look out for Zain Retherford as he will be the wrestler to beat in this pool.

Neal Molloy

138lbs Pool A

Going Out Next Round: 0-1

Comments: Sick, sick, sick, sick….did I mention sick? Molloy’s pool is absolutely sick and there is no easy road from here on out. Featuring Ashnault, Brill, Leeth, Roper, Dippery and Molloy all in one pool is like getting five bikes for Christmas! Whoever comes out of this pool alive will have earned it the hard way.

Tommy Forte

138lbs Pool B

Wrestlers with 1 loss: 6

Going Out Next Round: 2-4

Comments: Forte’s pool is no easier, but in the case of the B pool everyone has been beating up on each other. Forte will need to survive at least two more rounds to be in the hunt for the podium.

Riley Lefever

170lbs Pool B

Wrestlers with 1 loss: 9

Going Out Next Round: 4-5

Comments: Lefever has quietly had a solid tournament in both styles and looking solid here. He has Missouri 3rd placer this round and could be due for a bye in the next round. This could help him advance to the podium, but it looks like he will have to have two more wins at least.

Mitch Sliga

195lbs Pool B

Remaining Wrestlers: 14

Wrestlers with 1 loss: 8

Going Out Next Round: 2-6

Comments: Sliga is in an unfamiliar situation and the only way to make the elevated mat is to win out. He still has a chance to make the finals if he beats Sam Brooks and Brooks beats Dudley.

Jacob Barclay

Going Out Next Round: 2-4

Comments: Barclay's pool is not loaded with any super studs, but definitely one that will be hotly contested.  Barclay will need two more wins at least to make the podium.
