WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team will hold its annual Gold & Black Matches in Holloway Gymnasium Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. All 10 weights will be contested as the Boilermakers prepare for their season opener at Cal Poly on Nov. 14. The Gold & Black Matches are free and open to the public.
"We're hoping a lot of fans will come out and watch our Gold & Black Matches because we are excited and we are ready," head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. "I am proud of the hard work that our team has put in this fall and I am excited to see what they can accomplish during the season."
Ersland had the opportunity to see his squad in action while wrestling unattached at the Michigan State Open Nov. 2. Twenty-seven grapplers competed across the Freshman/Sophomore and Open Divisions with nine individuals placing.
OPEN DIVISION | FRESHMAN/SOPHOMORE DIVISION |
125 // Aaron Assad // 6th | 125 // Jonathan Marmolejo // 4th |
133 // Kyle Ayersman // 5th | 125 // Ben Thornton // 5th |
141 // Nick Lawrence // 4th
149 // Brandon Nelsen // 2nd
174 // Chad Welch // 4th | |
174 // Jacob Morrissey // 5th
184 // Patrick Kissel // 2nd |
The Michigan State Open served as an early measuring stick, but also helped set the stage for the Gold & Black Matches.
"We were excited that we were able to see our guys compete last weekend at the Michigan State Open," Ersland said. "We used it as an evaluation tool to see where our team stands. We saw some good things and we also saw what we need to work on. The Gold & Black Matches will help the coaches and I evaluate what our lineup looks like in the future and heading into our first dual at Cal Poly."
Fans in attendance will be the first to see and take home the 2014-15 Purdue wrestling poster and have a chance to win a Boilermaker Wrestling Experience for each of the eight home duals this season. A winner and their guest will join the wrestling team for warmups and sit on the bench during the dual.
